You know, I just realized something very interesting. Vulcanization is a process used to make rubber into tires, right? And isn't Luffy right now shifting into "Second Gear" (well, "Gear Second" if you wanna get techical, but even so).

I wonder if that's an intentional car-racing reference.

You are correct, and such an idenfitication surely points to vulcanization as an explaination of what is actually happening. The name appears to be multiple puns (Tire, Rubber, Lo Gia), which isn't something new to Oda. If I remember correctly, Vivi had some trouble with Karue getting mixed up with what she was saying; also note Luffy's "Kero," comment during the Rocketman ascent.

When ever Luffy faces a enemy more powerful than him and loses the frist round, Luffy always comes back with even more strength and a hell of a lot of determination, you can always tell he can take on the stronger guy just by looking at his body languge which means that he's ready to kick the living crap out of the guy. Thats what's going to happen with bluneo and his rematch with lucchi.

The thing that really stands out to me in the chapter is Luffy saying that he needs to be stronger so that he won't lose his nakama (or friends, or comrades, for you people who have a problem with that XD). I've been waiting to hear Luffy say that.

I really don't care if Nakama is translated or not. I find it almost incomprehensible that people have a problem one way or another, I just don't understand why people are annoyed if it's translated or not translated. :mellow: To me, it's just like people saying "amigos" or something in a latino-based show.

I prefer Nakama translated. Sure, most people on this forum knows what "nakama" means, but if it is put on a site where random fans of OP view the translation and aren't familiar with this forum or japanese, then they will now know what "nakama" means.

A long time ago, when I looked at anime sites and read fanfiction, I came upon the word "baka." I had no idea what it was. I didn't even know it was Japanese. It wasn't until some time later (maybe a year) that I found out "baka" meant "idiot."

So, as you can see, people will be confused.

ItÂ´s just when IÂ´m doing the bench press at the gym. IÂ´m able to control the entire process to a certain degree. But if I put too much weight on it then I simply can not lift the weight which in other words means that IÂ´m not able to control the bench press process. But that doesnÂ´t mean that I generally donÂ´t have the skill to do it, it just means that at some point it becomes to big for me and my strenght and skills.

Same counts for Crocodile and his logia powers. He could control the sandstorm before it was out of his league.

I don't think he can control any sand, only the sand he's made of. There was probably some wind always blowing towards Yuba, which took the sandstorm in that direction

Depends on how you do it. If you light a match then you don´t control the fire. But if can make fire while your finger becomes fire (as Ace would do) then you should actually control it until it is not too big for you.

And seriously this discussion is silly. He created a sandstorm. Simple as that. It´s not like every human being can create a sandstorm with nothing but his bare hands. Only Crocodile could do it because he ate the sand logia. That´s how he could create it and direct it in a position where the winds will bring it towards Yuba. It´s not like in the OP world there´s only one wind that constantly blows towards Yuba no matter where on the Grand Line you are.

Point is he did created one with his bare hands and placed it in a for his purpuses fitting position. Can´t deny that. That it grew beyond his powers doesn´t mean that he can´t control it towards a certain degree. If we follow that logic then mankind couldn´t do anything because at a certain degree everything gets to big for us (except for breathing).

And another example of how logia users control the element of their fruit. Enels festival of the thousand storms or what it was called. He had complete control of the electricity in the cloud Maxim created therefore the lighting struck where he wanted. If he would have had no control of it, then his precious Maxim would have actually been a big dozen times because of the huge amount of gold on it. But no not one lighting strike went towards Maxim. I seriously don´t expect that to be luck.

I´m not doubting that he created a chain reaction. But the chain reaction is that what is too big for him to handle. One of the pieces of it is something he has control of and thats the sand that he manipulated to become a sandstorm.

If it wasn´t for his power then actually I could also create a sandstorm if I throw some sand in the wind and wait until it gets big. But it doesn´w work like that. His logia powers made him create it. But since he only controls sand and not wind too, he is not able to handle the complete thing. But without his control over sand a sandstrom wouldn´t have been created. And last time I´ve checked were discussing whether or not he is able to control the element sand and not the an elemental power combined of two different elemenst, wind and sand.

So I still say, that Crocodile can control sand. His whole first fight with Luffy at the gates of Rain Base prove that actually. He used the sand there for his attacks. It´s not like "Desert Girasole" is a move that he could pull on any place else besides a desert.

And don´t say he jumped because he´s invulenrable to fire. That may be true but if he is invulnerable then it doesn´t mean that the guy he saved is so somehow his power was also helpful to protect someone else besides himself.

But this analogy doesn´t apply on our example as much as Kintaro´s "I light a fire" analogy doesn´t apply. Where talking about elemental users and controling the element. So unless you are not an wave logia user or Kintaro isn´t a fire logia users your analogies don´t work because Crocodile is a sand logia user and we are discussing his powers of controling sand.

Maybe it's just the Springield Tire Yard which has given me false knowledge, but can't car tires burn for quite a while?
If this was true, a vulcanized Luffy would be able to set fire to himself without it dooming him. He could use it against Aokiji, perhaps...

Concerning the Elemental Debate, I've got to go with Yoska. The Logia users create their element, and may use said, already existing, element to their Advantage (desert Girosole). The only way they can actually control/ manipulate their element, is by tapping it from themselves, it seems. Otherwise, Croc could've just turned the entire desert into, say, a giant Crocodile made out of sand, or cause Desert Girosole by staring at the ground, and Enel would be able to rain Thunder beasts from the Sky instead of regular strikes of lightning.
As it stands, Croc has to manually initiate Girosole, and Enel can only create beasts from himself.

Or in short: I think they can only directly control what they tap from themselves.

Fair argument. Not much that I would like to discuss in contrary I just want to add that even though I think that they can control even elements that doesn´t tap from themselves I agree that neither Crocodile nor Enel nor anyone else could use sand, lighting etc. limitless. On that I agree with you. Just wanted to make that clear.

The only difference between your view and mine is that I think it has something to do with reaching the limits instead of not being able to do it in general.

I just prefer it that way that logia´s can control the element to a certain degree because otherwise they would be like Mr. 3 who also just can control the wax he creates but not wax in general and thus the power behind the word "elemental" loses weight to me if logia users are the same.

I realized why I was disappointed with Luffy pulling out Second Gear already. It took some time, but Nami finally got full faith in Luffy, saying "yeah, he'll definitely win!" and all that. This kinda has him say that she had too much faith in him, and he couldn't handle it as far as Nami knew. Though she was right in that he did find a way….

I don't want Lucci to stand a chance.

just finished reading 387
and I gotta say…when Luffy was initiating second gear
my heart sank and thought "oh no...he's going super saiyan"
(just a figure of speech, not that I have any beef with dragon ball)

but it's just common nowadays in mangas to see turn on the 'second gear' with a snap of a finger, either from a burst of energy or shining light or smoke or whatever...
and frankly one of the reason I love OP is that instead of those 'second or third or fourth gear', the characters get stronger bit by bit, and not go into a second gear and suddenly become 500% stronger...

Did anyone really get Zoro's new new move??

Is Enbima Yonezu Onigiri (Beautiful Demon Sleepless Night Demon Slash) just a fancy name for a warped sword version of Onigiri??

I usually like Zoro's moves because when you look closely at it, you can see Oda's creativity going wild. Like many of Zoro's move has references to animals in the Kanji or in the reading (Onigiri - Oni is a demon and onigiri is a rice ball, Cycle - rhino, Tatsumaki - Dragon) or moves with interesting background like Rashoumon and the Canon series.

But this one I don't get.
Is Enbima one of the demons in his cursed sword??
Zoro probably got the name Yonezu (Sleepless Night) from the island he's currently on (no night island) but I don't really understand the significance of him stating that.

If anyone has any insight into this, that would be really cool.

Well as for the physical move, it looked like he was holding his swords differently in his hands… a slash more like Rashamon than old fashioned Onigiri. As for the name, I only just started learning japanese so don't ask me ^.^;;;

So, it's Shrimp Mayonnaise Rice Ball. :laugh:

And of course 'enbima' = kind of almost like 'vampire'. Hence the bat aura while the attack.

Just like what he said. When Eneru caused lightning bolts to drop down everywhere and it never hits his Maxim, it definitely isn't luck. He surely has control over the lightnings.

You'll see how Zoro's swords are 'bended' or 'wavey' in shape instead of his usual slash moves. And it doesn't look like a bat to me - the 'beautiful demon' corresponds with the long chinese-style sleeve/dress and hair; the horns to indicate she's a demon. <_<

the first one is when sanji goes "ROBINCHAN! I'M COMING!" (i swear, that guy has no loyalty; first nami, now robin) and ran off on his own. the 2nd has smokes that show that sanji is already on the top floor while the others are still distracted by zoro.

now considering that nami chopper and zoro got even more distracted by baskerville, who else thinks sanji is going to proceed on his own and get halted by one of the CP9. either that or accidentally meet one of the other CP9.

what would be funny was if calipha walked by because she needed to go to the bathroom because she had diarrhea from the devil fruit and sanji saw her and went "mellorine~"

Dunknow if anyone else already posted this theory, but Zongcai mentioned something about the possibility of Luffy vulcanizing himself. Yaknow, when you superheat rubber to make it stronger and un-freezable. If that's true though, this is a permanent change to him and his fighting abilities.

It's a scary thought though. The kinetic energy behind stretched vulcanized rubber. Luffy'd take heads off with that kinna power XD

And yeah it looks like this is another situation how the Strawhats will get divided to have seperate fights as it was the case in Alabasta and Skypiea already.

Yeah, letting him survive makes me just angry. The bomb exploding and one knowing Pell died protecting his country and those he loved made that moment one of the greatest in the serie, but then, he let the dude survive. Yeah, well, he did get some scars, so what? Argh… I can tell you all that that scene is not one of my favorites any more.

By the way, I checked the color spread again, looked at the text: "Is he strong? watch off!". And then if you look at the things going on in the picture. Luffy is beating Zoro in the battle there, and from what we saw in their fight on Whiskey Peak, they were pretty much equal in a battle. And in this chapter, Luffy is starting to "power up", "transform" or whatever. So does this mean that Luffy will become a lot stronger than Zoro, then, how are the rest of the crew supposed to keep up with his pace? He like can't do all the battling all himself, can he? Hmm...
