Love love love love that the Minks are about to go Sulong ASAP! There is still a good chance that the Mink Kings and other non-Straw Hats get to fight Calamaties/Sweet Commanders but man is it looking less likely that they’ll finish the fights successfully. Oh I sure do hope all 9 get stomped hard so the true 9 show up while aiding the true tenths Luffy/Momo.
Chapter 987: Vassals of Glory
-
-
For some reason this chapter had some pretty hilarious moments. Big Mom being all like ''Kaido, you dead?'' and Nami and Carrot just basically saying ''Fuck it, let's escape.'' like it's nothing really made me laugh. Probably because of the contrast with all the serious epicness going on.
Big mom was distracted, it’s logical to use that time to escape. Also, they both had experience with homies so, it’s not a big deal for them. The problem was BM herself.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So i guess next chapter will mostly be about the alliance kicking ass. Then around the last few pages there'll be some jobbing by the minks and scabbards, maybe Zoro will be bothered by a crab neck or something
Luffy still needs his customary delay, I guess one of the F6 or Disasters will engage him here. We need to see new Haki in combat and also time for Kaido to finish off the scabbards and the Sulongs who would have done 10% damage to him by then.
-
Yeah, I think many of us were misinterpreting how Kaido's incredible strenght works. He was never meant to be this untouchable monster that nobody can even scratch. On the contrary, you can kick his ass all you want, he'll just get back up anyways. Just like Luffy. All villains are dark reflections of Luffy in a way, so I guess it's finally him to be the one yelling ''why won't you stay down!!!!!!!''
That's why Oda has no problem showing him on his back, screaming or bleeding. You can hurt him, but it just won't matter in the end.
This is the best take I've seen on explaining Kaido's "immortality" and the criticism by some of him being injured.
Well said.
-
Was Kaido hinting at his own tragic backstory there with the whole "pirates always betray you" thing a la Moria with his "my beatiful crew why did they die" bit.
Maybe Rocks pirates abandonded him at some point to a fight he was about to lose?

So why doesnt the official translation translate Akazaya? It feels very random that its not.
Sort of grandfathered in from the translation having to make a choice years ago without much context to go by, so it kept the official japanese name as a proper name rather than translating it to just a phrase at the time.
Similarly, Oden's catch phrase would have been different it they'd KNOWN it was eventually going to be "I was born to boil because my name is Oden! " but the line out of context years ago made that rough.
Also Laugh Tale.
Notably, in the opposite direction, Dogstorm and Catviper was a choice where he directly asked the Japanese editor what route to go with, and was told to go with descriptor names rather than the Japanese, the same way you translate Whitebeard and Blackbeard rather than leaving his name Shirohige and Kurohige.

Kind of a shame it's gone so badly tbh. With Wano being so isolated and so distinctly Japanese it could have been one of the few settings where the leaving some loanwords and weeabooisms in could have enhanced the story rather than detract from it. Even in the Japanese - as I understand it - the Wano characters (or at least just the samurai) have a really outdated style of speaking that stands out from the rest. An approach for that had to be decided as far back as Punk Hazard and unfortunately that choices was slightly fancier, old-timey English, all verily-s and what have you, which is a poor aesthetic match for Wano as a setting. Stephen's obviously trying to catch that Japanese-ness as much as he can now that we're here, but he's had the bad luck of hitting things like Akazaya and whatever the Japanese for the Witching Hour Boy was that run clunky and awkward untranslated.
This is one of those things I can really see benefiting from a future rewrite with full 20:20 hindsight. There'd be less pressure to over-Japanese the red scabbards if we were already getting that flavour through the Wano characters being the only ones in the world using Japanese honouriffics or sprinkling little weeabooisms through their speech (like Tamago got with his French) instead of the overeloquen faux-elizabethan they got.

Consistency creates some issues. Inconsistency is in and of itself an issue.

The series could use a retranslation anyway from the beginning until Punk Hazard.
We're allowed to show every type of disturbing event possible (besides overt rape) but Chopper can't say "ya bastard?" C'mon now.Btw anyone who says One Piece is for kids, how's that physically abused 8 year old chained up to be executed treating you?

Unless something turns out to be GLARINGLY wrong and plot important, like Raftel versus Laugh Tale, consistency is almost always better than inconsistency.
The vast majority of readers aren't going to be nerds on a forum absorbing every minor detail and comparing the translations living and breathing the series in every week, they're going to be casual readers who pick up a volume occasionally… and would be massively confused if a whole bunch of names and spellings that have been around for decades in some cases, suddenly changed between volumes.
Just look at how much people freaked out about the anime fixing Robin's skin tone over the timeskip (but not her eye color). And that was in the Japanese production!
It's mostly only really jarring with OP because it's run for so long and gone through multiple translators and editorial edicts at this point, so there's a lot of time for the story to wrap around on itself again. We're lucky that its been allowed to have Stephen consistently on it for as long as he has been, but even he can't anticipate Oda doing things years before he does them.

I wonder how serious are the scabbard injuries made during Kaidou's fall
Kinemon and Kanjuro have an eye closed. The others have blood (or maybe just dust) on their face -

It’s probably a pipe dream, but I would gladly, once the series is over, if a new translated release of the complete series was somehow done and becomes available to the public, buy the series set.
Though if they ever did that they’d probably have some nice box set type bundle for it which would be extra nice to have in general.
-
How nice of Kaido to take the Scabbards up to the roof with him, otherwise it would've been a pain in the ass to get up there. :ninja:
Can't wait to see Neko and Inu in Sulong. It's going to be glorious.

What a ****ing chapter. I'm looking for the cover with Jinbe in HD, could somebody help me find it?

Love that Kin’emon got a cool “Luffy will be king of the Pirates” line.
Did a little research. This reddit post summarizes when all the crew mates have declared Luffy will become King of the Pirates
https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/co…ats_that_have/Then there’s the following:
Other characters who have declared Luffy will become Pirate King:
*Sabo after eating the devil fruit declared Luffy will become pirate king to Rebecca
*Bartolomeo when he overhears someone make fun of Luffy in between matches of the tournament declared Luffy will be pirate king (there might be other times)Times something similar was said about Luffy but not an official declaration he will become pirate king:
*Kokoro post Enies Lobby while he’s sleep eating just calls Luffy pirate king
*Pedro right before he blew up big mom didn’t say Luffy would be Pirate King but said he would fulfill the Mink/Kozuki prophecy
*Ace’s dying words is he regrets not seeing Luffy achieve his dreams, though “I wasn’t able to see your dreams through to the end”, doesn’t necessarily mean he will be pirate king, especially given the way his “dream” was not voiced in the flashback.I could be missing other examples too.

I love the series but no way in hell I'm rebuying the whole thing again when its done just for the sake of getting Zolo changed to Zoro and Kami to God. Especially not when its going to be 120+ volumes long when its all said and done. (Obviously any deluxe re-release would be 3 in 1 volumes, so we're actually talking like 40 deluxe volumes) but if I can't be arsed to rebuy 14 deluxe volumes of Dragonball I'm not going to rebuy 40+ volumes of One Piece, no matter how nice it looks on the shelf.
They should absolutely at some point make that switch and update all the things for the future's sake, but I can't see them making a real move on that until its all said and done in another 7-10 years and that's just… that's rough and hard to imagine anyone greelighting the tiemm and effort that would be needed to go through ALL the pages and re-translate and update ALL the things.
(To this day my biggest peeve is still them screwing up Nami's "The Second Person" chapter title and changing the context to "The Other Villain" because the translator 100% missed the point.... that bothers me way more than Zolo.)
And even then, the Dragonball deluxe volumes are still censored, don't correct their old mistakes, and its DRAGONBALL which actually sells well, so...
-

What are you talking about? That was clearly Jackie Chun who blew up the moon.

I would definitely support a complete retranslation of the series. Even if i own the series twice on english already

Yeah, a reprint that only changes Zolo/Kami wouldn't be enough to make me double dip, but I'd probably go in for a full rewrite and re-lettering, as pie in the sky as that is to hope for. That goes double for a colour release. But I'd also hope they experiment with things outside singles or the usual 3-in-1 omnis. The Attack on Titan Colossal Editions fit 5 normal volumes into one book. The Death Note All-in-One Edition shows you could slap 12 volumes together if you're really dedicated. Those releases are obviously massive and unwieldy shelf pieces made purely for collectors, but who would a One Piece rerelease be for if not the hardcore collectors? There's more options out there, but they're so rarely utilised.
(also I vaguely recall reading in the past that the 3 in 1 Dragon Ball volumes are at least partially decensored - meaning the nudity and maybe the middle fingers are restored but the dialogue is untouched - from the second printing onward, but I can't seem to find it fully confirmed anywhere)
-
Personally, I'd be down if they somehow got the digitally colored version to paper AND corrected some stuff, but we all know that's pretty slim to none chance of that happening.
-
At the time a retranslation of One Piece is done, I believe subscription will be the way people read mangas the most
-
So who betrayed Kaido? What do you guys think? Rocks Pirates is probably the best (and easiest) answer.
They probably left him in a super shitty situation somewhere lol. Greg suggested God Valley on twitter.

Never ever I will touch to that digital color version.
People ask what Oda think of the anime but I wonder what he thinks of that color version
He has a great color palette in his color pages and covers which his light-years away in quality from this digital thing -
Pretty harsh on the colour version there. I think it does a pretty good job of matching Oda's style and tone. You can tell the difference, of course, they haven't quite got the physical brush/pen stroke texture down, but I wouldn't call it glaringly different. I imagine Oda appreciates that they follow his colouring over the anime's, if nothing else about them.
(That said, I wouldn't want the colour version to replace the black and white version either. Both versions have pros and cons and Oda does a lot of subtle but really high-quality stuff with inked in shapes and silhouettes that you can't see in colour, and it would be a shame for that aspect of the art to be lost to time. A retranslation applied to both a reprinted black and white release and a new colour one would be perfect but I'm dreaming…)

I hope WB turned on them (as in rocks) for being too evil. And that BM bailed little teen Kaido out when he was about to get Garp fisted
-
If Kaido doesn't mop the floor with the scabbards and sulong minks, then Oda should just have Luffy face him right now and end this arc.
Though of course since this is Oda, Kaido will be used as a hype tool for the sulong mink nation further making him look pathetic strength wise.
Whatever decent job Oda's done with his character the past few chapters, he just makes him look just as bad strength wise.
-

As of the seventh printing that I looked at in stores just the other day, the Vizbig editions (the bigger ones with color pages, better paper, and harder covers) still have censoring in them, while the smaller less good 3 in 1 editions are uncensored.
I check them periodically just to see if the latest printing has finally fixed them and make them worth getting, but the guns in the Buu saga are still laser guns, and Bulma in the shower is edited, and those are the two things I know to look for quickly to judge.
It's so weird. We can show Goku's pee pee but we can't show Bulma's boobs! We can show a farmer shooting at Raditz with bullets but we can't show assholes shooting a dog! Which I just don't understand particularly given that yeah, the 3 in 1 versions aren't censored? unless that was just a wrong thing that slipped in at some point when they initially did the volumes like 12 years ago and they just never fixed it.

Given the mink transformations are being pulled out THIS early, pretty sure they're about to get wrecked.

Where's chapter 988?
(Yeah, I know, no chapter this week, but the hype….!)
-
I disagree. Everybody though Kaido would we reck the scabbards this chapters and would be unhurt yet not only did he get hurt, Oda tries build this as a big fight making them appear equal. Lol
-

Now they think Kaido is going to wreck them next chapter and when that doesn't happen they will just post again about how Kaido will totally wreck them NEXT chapter!!! (989)
This will continue on until Kaido is dead and then we will get the "Oh I always knew he wasn't going to beat up the alliance" comments.
-
Hope he gets smacked around a bit more, with some nicely choregraphed tag teaming. And if Kinemon slices his fire breath once he gets cornered enough to pull that card i'd be super happy. Then around the end of the chapter it would feel fine if the tide started to turn a bit
-
I am perfectly content with Kaidou just tanking the hits and getting back up, outlasting the minks Su Long lol
-
A sword and gun combo with Kiku and Izo would be nice.
Would be nice to see what a gun can do on the big stage
-
On Kaido vs Su Long Minks + Scabbards, I'm looking forward to it and not expecting anyone to really get "wrecked". Both sides have been introduced as formidable fighters (and had panel time to properly back it up, too) so I would be disappointed if one immediately wiped the floor with the other.
Kaido is all sobered up and, outnumbered as he is, he still goes "challenge accepted, bring it on". He is good at tanking hits though, not avoiding them altogether, so he is bound to take a few and based on what we've just seen he can be injured.
The minks and scabbards I expect to get in some serious hits but see their numbers dwindle progressively. Everything they can throw at Kaido still won't be enough at the end of the day, but he shouldn't come out of it unscathed either.Would be nice to see what a gun can do on the big stage
Hey, a gun is what killed Oden after all so everything's possible. :ninja:
-

There is nothing fine about this. This would just imply that the minks only lacked time to beat him not strength. How can that be fine.

The only thing he's done this arc is getting smacked. I don't want any of that. I want this titan to fight, not just be a punching bag.

If they land a bunch of blow on him, and the end result is he shrugs it off and heals from the damage basically instantly, does it even matter beyond semantics?
Some people got it into their heads that he was literally invincible, what we're seeing now is that actually he's unkillable. Basically the same thing for story purposes, different implementation. If it was JUST invincibility, then Luffy would overcome and break through it with his new power up and that'd be that. But "he doesn't care what you do to him and keeps healing all the damage and doesn't stop coming" is scary in different ways.
Also, if the villain just completely one-shots everyone on the first attack, that doesn't build intimidation, it just makes the people fighting look weak. Have you ever seen a Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan movie? Dragonball before Z? The sidekicks get to at least TRY first and show their stuff, and reveal they aren't slouches… but that the badguy is a league beyond and that everything they did was meaningless. That's how buildup works.
So the samurai and the minks will get to hit him for a couple chapters, look impressive and credible and payoff wanting to see them in full power for literal years, , then get smacked down with the baddy no worse for wear, and now the baddie looks even tougher and the hero has to be even better than all the guys we just saw fighting.
No one remembers the 100,000 Fishman Island fighters because Luffy took out half of them in one haki blast. That's not impressive, it just makes them seem like fodder. No one really remembers the main enemies either, because there was no real give or take, they all just got beaten down simultaneously in like two chapters. But you distinctly remember Kuroobi, Chew, Hachi and Arlong from a decade earlier because they were given time to shine and terrorize fodder before their defeat by the heroes.
-
Yeah, Kaidou tanking a large group of Su Long minks+Scabbards isn't fine at all lol Get outta here with that Debbie downer stuff.

There is no need for the scabbards and minks to push Kaido beyond his limits. Like non at all. We know how strong they are, we've seen them repeatedly fighting, we saw them even hurting Kaido. Kaido needs to do the hurting now, not them.
To put it simply, it's Kaido that needs to get the better of them in a convincing fashion because his threat level is constantly dropping the entire arc.
-
Here is my hope. First the animal patrol and Kawa go hard on him, using sulong to really beat his ass. Then the brothers and raizo get to to their thing shooting, stabbing and ninjaing him a bit. Then Kaido gets angry and starts to build up his breath beam, which Kinemon slices into nothing with his fire cutting. Then the three samurai dudes lay into him hard with their slashes. After or during Kaido can club smash any of them
-
Kaido taking punishment but always getting up like nothing would made him even more of a monster tbh
-
There is no point in hurting him again. It would just further make him look even worse. This guy supposedly can't get hurt, it takes special moments. Scabbards again hurting him is bad.
-
Best case scenario they force him to change form.
But i'd be fine with them falling to his dragon form as well
-
How would Kaido taking hits and getting back up make him look good? That makes no sense.
