DARIA & JODIE” (wt)
The iconic animated franchise is reinvented through the eyes of heroine Daria Morgendorffer and one of her closest friends Jodie Landon. These two smart young women take on the world, with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender and race.
Writer: Grace Edwards (“Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt,” “Loosely Exactly Nicole,” “Inside Amy Schumer”)
So… is it a reboot in high school again or is actually following Daria into the adult world in her 20's or 30's? It'd be reeeeeeally weird to force it back into high school (especially when the old show spent its last couple seasons growing up). The epilogue in the final movie showed them all growed up and successful so... I dunno.
But why Jodie? And not Jane? Is it because Jodie is black?
I'm hoping it's a continuation. As long we get appearances from Quinn, Jane, Helen, and Jake, I'll be fine with the show. Since those characters also made Daria so great.

I assumed Jodie. Cause she's black. I can't recall if they were going to the same school or not in the end.
Daria & Jodie just feels odd to me; even setting aside the feeling that it's just because she's one of the two black characters on the show, Daria and Jane make up one of the most memorable duos from the last few decades of TV animation.
It'd be like rebooting, say, Tom & Jerry but making it Tom & Quacker or rebooting Phineas and Ferb as Phineas and Irving.
Or rebooting Pinky and the Brain and having it be Pinky and Billie.
Like, the character is fine but they're not part of THE duo.
Yeah call me when they do an actual live action version with Aubrey Plaza.
Jodie the spin off series of Daria have been picked up by Comedy Central.

Yeah two years later and that newest press release just makes is sound even more weird.
Jode will star Jodie Landon, a friend of Daria’s from the original series, as she graduates college and enters the lousy world of adults. Focusing on her particular experiences as a Black woman, the show will feature satire of all the things you’d expect from a coming-of-age comedy in the 2020s: workplace culture, social media, probably the coronavirus, etc.
Like, it was weird two years ago that it didn't mention Jane, but the new press release doesn't even mention Daria being in it. And its post college in presumably a new location with the characters much older… Like, is there even going to be ANY point in connecting it to the 23 year old show now? If you called her literally anything else and it wasn't called a spinoff, would anyone even know?
I guess if it keep the art style?
Sorry. Not an update on the new show, but I just finished up the original Daria. All 65 episodes, plus the two TV movies. All around great show that still holds up well.
! I guess I'll weigh in on the whole Tom situation since, from what I've heard, that's a point of controversy among the fanbase.
! I thought Tom was fine in the fourth season, but once he and Daria started dating in the fifth season…yeah, it just gotta kinda weird and not very interesting. First off, there is that whole lingering issue that Daria is dating her best friend's former boyfriend. And even if Jane did get over and forgive Daria (which itself may have happened a bit too easily), it still just...doesn't feel right. But even I look past that, there is still is the big issue that Tom himself is just not a very interesting character. He pretty much just exists to be the perfect boyfriend and says and does everything right and whenever there's a problem with their relationship it's pretty much always Daria's fault. Honestly, he feels pretty Mary Sue-ish (or Gary Stu-ish). Not to mention having to have Daria spend time with him takes away from her developing and engaging in her more interesting relationships (Jane, Quinn, her parents, etc.) That said, we did admittedly get two of Daria's best family moments in Lucky Strike (seeing Quinn publicly admit that Daria is her sister was so satisfying) and Boxing Daria. So...yeah. I wouldn't say the Tom relationship ruined season 5 for me. It just...really didn't need to happen. So it's just as well that they broke up in the finale, but...then that was the finale, so eh.
As for this new Jodie series, I…guess I'm open to it. Jodie wasn't exactly a standout character, but I guess she has a little something going for her with inadequacy as a young African-American girl with her parents pressuring her to succeed. I mean, even Daria herself getting her own show must have seemed a bit strange at time. Lest we forget, she was originally just some smart girl who occasionally appeared on Beavis and Butthead.
It was a lot weirder when they were trying to artificially replace Jane with Jodie.
A spinoff starring her could be fine, but it does seem on the surface like a shallow attempt to cash in on an established IP while targeting a new demographic.
