One Piece Episode 839 Preview (Naotoshi Shida's Style)
-
Sorry Oda, but the vinsmokes can go piss up a rope. No amount of cool poses will help.
-
Correct me if i'm wrong but we get tomita too? Looks like him in 0:04-0:05 with the family cuts. This ep was okay, i was suprised that they dont cover the whole chapter but i think its even better because we will get bege scene looking better for 1 week than this would be now so + i wonder if shida will do all attacks of germa vs family too or only transformation but after preview its look like he will do attacks too.

I… did not like this episode. Everything got dragged out so much. When you cram in there an extended unnecessary scene of some marines finding the singing flowers, then extend it some more for no reason, all tension in the present time is ruined. You can't keep cutting back and forth then expect the pace and tone to be fine. The ending was also incredibly awkward and ugly to look at.
Hopefully next episode has better pacing and animation cause holy shit; what a crappy way to end a string of pretty good flashback episodes. -
When reading the manga of Big Mom's flashback arc. It was too quick in the later parts of the chapter. What the anime did to the arc is to add scenes most lightly approved by Oda to reveal what happened to Big Mom as a kid. We never saw how she got off the island or how the marines would react to Linlin's powers. (Then known as magic as a 6-year-old.) When she saw her new friends getting shot by the Navy. That's when she had enough and told them a lesson of not messing with a child's toys. Nevermind the fact she had superhuman strength and king's haki makes her a powerful foe. I could see why Streusen had to lie to her about what happened to Mother Caramel. (Even though she did deserve it) And had a role in shaping her future today. I mean at first, he only did it to manipulate a child due to her powers. But I guess as time goes by he must have felt sorry for her as he later on in the arc has to respect for her and even said she was the best thing that has ever happen to him. Young Streusen wouldn't give a crap. But old man Streusen treats her like a person and has become a great chef! I feel sorry for him to keep the charade for so long. (Knowing that the mother is D.I.E.D.)

Looking at the next episode preview, germa suit transformation is way better then I expected.
! >! >! just wait for sanji to do it in the future in every battle. sanji germa suit >>> franky transformation and luffy's gear 4 transformation.

Because of various issues I wasn't able to watch the two previous episodes when they came out, so I had myself a marathon.
The flashback stuff was pretty well done. The music and the narration made it feel like a fairy tale which was a really suitable tone (though ironically so toward the end, lol). The end of 836 was super creepy and great, Linlin knows how to set the scene. And her voice was really cute while also appropriate!
The flashbacks in this episode were also pretty good and they made good use of filler. The Marines scene would have made it even more certain that cannibalism had happened if it was in the manga.
However, the present day parts of the episode were rather boring, especially in the first half. I guess some of the recap might have been necessary for new watchers, but it wasn't told in an interesting manner. However, it did get better once the plan failed, and the episode made good use of sound and reaction shots to play up the despair without overdoing it, it was a good adaptation of a manga scene that was already pretty funny and tense. And ending it when they did was a good call imo.
I would suppose most of the budget went into the previous two episodes as well as the next one, which left this one lacking a little, but I thought there was more good than bad in it.

Just in this episode we get Ueda and TAP animators which is the worst possible scenario probably, budget almost mean nothing to the quality of animation all depends if we get good stuff for episode, talented animators, and time that they have to do their work. Like OPM have very, very good animation not because they have high budget but because series director have connection between talented animators and he gather these people to work on the show…

They left the final double spread of chapter 868 out of this episode… I suppose I understand, they probably wanted to end the episode with a defeat tone, but I think the omitted scene may end up feeling underwhelming at the start of the next episode instead of ending this one. On the other hand, next episode seems beautifully done so maybe it was a good thing the said scene was saved for the next one.
As for the episode itself, at some point I was almost going crazy thinking we would actually see Linlin giving life to each flower on that island, but overall I liked the added scenes. I mean, if they want to add scenes and stretch things up, the flashback is the time to do it since the wedding itself shouldn't leave much room for added content.
Btw, for some reason I can't explain or understand I absolutely loathe the sound of steps used in One Piece (in general I really dislike the sound effects used in this anime, but the steps specially...), so the part with the group running towards Caesar was excruciating for me. I don't know what it is, it just... is.
-
Good that they dont cover the whole chapter because i think with ueda and tap animators bege transformation could look bad, in next episode this will look 100% better than would look in this so i'm happy about that… For me sounds in op are okay, but i really like punch sound.

The anime's been fire overall for several months, but what happened with this episode? Is it just me or did it feel very stale somehow? The end of the flashback was meh and the scenes in the present felt very off somehow and underwhelming. Characters were off model all episode (outside the flashback) and the rocket launcher scene felt like it had no impact compared to the manga. I'm almost never one to complain about manga to anime adaptation since most of the time I find the complaints petty, but I dunno, the impression I got in the manga was that Big Mom tightened up her muscles instinctively to repel the launchers, with the way Oda emphasized the veins in her arms. Here in the anime it happened so nonchalantly. Maybe it's just me?
Maybe the recent episodes have given me a higher standard now but I hope the rest of the arc is handled well.
-
This is because of Ueda direction and TAP animators that work on this ep, this is possibly the weakest stuff rotation so, if you know that ep will be done by these guys then you can lower you expectaction.
-
I guess we can just hope they are saving the rest of the better staff members for coming episodes.
-
I thought you didnt like the flashback episodes….
… ????
When did I say that? Flashback episodes are fine so long as they server a purpose, and I'm totally fine with Big Mom's. In fact I wish Oda had included even more flashbacks of her career growing up as a pirate and forming her kingdoms/children. -
Oh. I guess it was just the scene where everyone was eaten that you had issues with. Sorry for the mistake!

New BGM around the 10 minute mark, sounds almost like an instrumental to a character song.

There was another unreleased track around the 19 minute mark, and they share the same theme/leitmotif.
The music that debuted in this episode played first in Heart of Gold, now that I checked. Should have released them in that 2016 album too.

Oh THAT's where I heard that instrumental during the birthday scene the episode before this one. It was from Heart of Gold and was the instrumental to Olga's song I believe. I was wracking my brain trying to remember where I heard it from.
