Mafia 58: Civilization and its Discontents

This is a Mafia game! If you're new to Mafia:

! > Mafia games (sometimes known as Werewolf) are played over the course of several days. Before the game starts, players are generally PMed by the Game Host with information about the game and a designated role. Usually, this boils down to Town or Mafia. Each Night, the Mafia Night Kills a player, eliminating them from the game. Then the following Day, players will deliberate publicly in an attempt to find the culprits. If you are aligned with the Town, your goal is to track down the Mafia and eliminate them from the game, usually through a community Lynch during the Day, until all Mafia members are removed from the game. If you are aligned with the Mafia, your goal is to eliminate as many players from the game, using any means necessary, (removing players with a Night Kill, manipulating the community into Lynching a member of the Town, etc.), in order to reach a functional majority. Pretty simple, right?

Well, half the fun comes from the various ways the basic format can be twisted. Sometimes, players will be assigned Night Actions, which can let them investigate the alignment of another player or allow them to protect a player from Night Kills. Some Night Actions can even be Night Kills themselves! Also, sometimes there are multiple Mafias, or Third-Parties with their own agendas. Or sometimes the Town is a Spaceship and the Mafia are Aliens. There are myriad ways the game can be played, and it's all the Game Host's job to design the game and present it to the players interested. Sometimes, it's really fun, and sometimes, the Game Host accidentally gives the Mafia unlimited power and breaks the game. But, you never know what will happen! And half the fun is having fun.

This will be something of an experimental set-up, but I'm hopeful that it will make for an exciting and memorable game!

There is no limit to the number of slots available in this game, but sign-ups will end on Saturday, May 26th, with the game starting the next day. The more the merrier! More details will be posted once the game starts.

We're so pleased to have you here on this extraterritorial island for our study, BIOS-58. As you know, our goal here is to observe a humanoid population's society-building skills, particularly when working with strangers. You all have agreed to come here to participate in this study and build the society of tomorrow, for which you will of course be compensated. We look forward observing your interactions and marveling at the ingenious foundations you will surely construct.

One small matter before we begin. While we have of course run some rudimentary screening on each of you before inviting you to participate in BIOS-58, due to limited grant funding the process was not exactly as thorough as we would have preferred. It's entirely possible that a few of you may be here with... shall we say... less than benign intentions. As such, before we start the study proper, we ask that each participant and their estate waive the right to sue BIOS-58 in the event of injury, psychological trauma, or death. I'm quite certain that no such thing will occur, but nonetheless it's considered necessary. A simple "I consent" or the likes from each participant will be sufficient for us to move forward with the program.

Dr. Vorlianis and I formally welcome you to the BIOS-58 facility, a closed ecological system created on this island for the purposes of understanding the society-building dynamics present in an isolated human population. You will have free reign of the interior, which resembles a rustic shanty town from the American 1930s. Machinery and tools are available, but electricity is not present in the township. There are two exceptions: the cameras scattered around the facility for constant observation of your noble efforts, and the screen located on the west edge of the town, where any announcements we need to make will be projected.

We hope that the next two weeks will be fulfilling, productive, and scientifically enlightening! However, as it appears increasingly likely that a few of you pose a serious and malignant threat to the rest of the Town, we encourage you to remain vigilant. Unfortunately, we do not know the exact number of these hostile individuals.

As such, this study features a unique victory condition: rather than end immediately once all threats to the Town have been eliminated, the game must instead be ended by a majority vote to end the game and coexist without suspicion. If all threats have been removed, the Town immediately wins; if any non-Town players are still present, the Town loses.

Don’t let this bring you down! Please spend your time getting to know each other and deciding your plans of action. BIOS-58 is officially open and Day 1 will end in 48 hours, at 3 PM ET, May 30th.

That's a pretty bizarre win con, and to be honest it only makes the game harder for the town.

That's about right. Non-Town normal win conditions are in place in addition to the one stated in the above post.

Here's some food for thought, though. If a lynch is achieved on the final day with 3 remaining, and the two remaining players have some ability to kill each other, the game veers into a tie-game situation. The same goes for if only a mafia player and a town player exists, except the mafia player would kill that town player and win.

So I don't know if relying on the end of the game like that 100% is a good strategic move. I would hope an investigative role exists that will be able to help us narrow things down better by at least the final 4/5.

Unless it's really a mafia/townie scenario, I can't see two people having the ability to kill that late into the game. Maybe one at most.
And if it's mafia/townie, I guess that's just the natural course of things. We lose if they aren't all dead anyway.

We're 9? 10? That should be around 3 mafia at least. That's a bare minimum of mafia lynches before even considering closing the game.

That's.. interesting! o_o So wait, we have to unanimously decide that there's no threats to town or else the game will continue on infinitely? OH BOY.

Honestly it sounds pretty hard to achieve, but by late end game after tons of evidence comes forward I would hope this will be easier to figure out… I feel like it's going to be a lot of chaotic discussions going around in circles though.

Also I foresee a lot of suspicions being pointed towards people who support the notion that mafia is eliminated, so it's going to be hard to voice that opinion in late game without everyone becoming suspicious of you.
