A super sweet series, with some gorgeous art and a very creative take on magic.
There's no reason you shouldn't be reading know, so let's start.
Witch Hat Atelier

Yeah it's great. Of all the series that get immediate translations when a chapter comes out this should be one of them.
! I hope some of the characters start questioning the "nobody should be able to do magic but us" mentality that the witches in the series have. The brimhats seem to maybe want to recruit Coco to their side so it'll probably happen at some point.

! I guess is more of a with great power, great responsibility kind of deal. Here we this magical ink you can cast an explosion as big as a city have fun not trying to conquer the whole continent with it. But it seems to be a shady connotation in Qifrey's mistrust of the Witch Auditorium.

! Well the people in charge of dealing with uses of forbidden magic seem to be really strict about erasing memories but Qifrey wants to know more about the book Coco had and probably thinks it would get them closer to dealing with the Brimhats than erasing her memory would. I think it's strange that he hasn't asked her much more about it up through chapter 10, and seemingly beyond too. I was looking through earlier chapters recently too and (in chapter 2) he talks to someone over some quasi-radio thing and I don't think we've met that character yet. I don't think it's the girl he meets later at the tower since she doesn't seem like someone that would be giving him permission to do something like he talks about. So he has his own agenda along with at least one other character.
-
It's cute, it's interesting, I don't feel any real connection to the characters but it's got enough going on to give it some time. Good find, thanks for posting

Nice bonding between Coco and Agate and then things took a turn for the worse. -
So the Brimhat stalking Coco did do something to her that's affecting her magic.
Edit: Chapter 20 is out in Japan and it's got a three page spread in it. They're not that rare but it's still cool to see them. Don't know how they work since I've never seen one in an actual book but I imagine you'd need a foldout page or something for them to work there.
-
New chapter translated.
! That brimhat guy messed with Coco's ink. At the end he's pouring his blood into a bottle of ink so I guess that does something somehow. Looks like Qifrey's going to go check it out. And Coco's not off the hook with the magic investigator people yet. Agete's signed up for a new magic test too.
-
! So here is our first stance of blood magic, hum? A bit too soon i weight, but would this mean that the special ink is not so special and anyone can use magic? Question, questions…
. And man the magic high commission or whatever is sure trigger happy.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
! If blood by itself could be used to draw magic I would think the Brimhats wouldn't bother with whatever they're doing and just go around teaching people to draw stuff with blood, causing chaos with it.
-
Chapter 13's out. Glad they managed to get it out so quickly after chapter 12. Haven't read it yet but I know it goes into more stuff about the ink given to Coco by the Brimhat guy.
-
oh boy
! He did what I think he did?Man I wonder what's Qifrey's motivation against the brimhats and why he is so reluctant to get the magical high commission on the case.
-
! I imagine he has something personal against them. In one of the earlier chapters he talks on some walkie-talkie like device to a character we probably haven't met yet too so he's working with someone else to some extent.
-
New translated chapter is out. This is kind of the start of a new arc.
-
His hat is very pointy
-
I'm really enjoying this series, and almost certainly would not have stumbled across it if not for the thread - thanks!
-
What a tease way to end the chapter…

This is a fabulous little series!
The art makes me think of Berserk or Attack on Titan but without the blood and guts.
-
The manga's been licensed in English but the first volume won't be out until next year. The person that's been translating it is dropping it because of that unfortunately. Someone else might pick it up but we'll have to see. The translator put up one more chapter (chapter 15) and translations for chapter 16 and 17 (in image files for some reason, I got some dirty image to text transliteration and I'm reading through the chapters and fixing any formatting stuff or things that I think are unnecessary or translated strangely for small things that do know of Japanese). I'll post my text here once I'm done. At least they finished volume 3 with these chapters.
-
Man what bad luck of mine, if another scanlator don't pick it up I might as well be screwed.
It's just me or…! The Brimhats may have started as a society of healers and evolved into something more sinister over the time.
-
The fact that healing magic is banned along with a bunch of other stuff just makes it more interesting than if banned magic was just the bad stuff. It's possible that it's what you said.
Here are the translations for chapters 16 and 17 for anyone that wants them.

17: https://pastebin.com/dk2KBjtSNot sure if linking to raws is okay but I can if anyone needs that.

I picked up WHA because of this thread, am enjoying it immensely, and am very grateful for your work with these translations
Thank you!
And if you have a chance, I'd love a link to the raws, PM'ed or in-thread. Ty!! -
A great find. I only read chapter 1 so far so I don't know if it holds its promises afterwards, but to call the art gorgeous would be an understatement. Love the take on magic, too. I'd be curious to know if the author had any previous works - they look really experienced at drawing so I'd be surprised if this was their first.

MAL has one series and a one shot under her name. She also draws covers for some American comics. This isn't the first time I've heard of a Japanese artist doing things for American comics. It's kind of bizarre.

Murata's Spiderman cover comes to mind.
-
I just read the one shot. Pretty good. The series doesn't seem to be translated. I emailed the person that was doing WHA translations to see if they could do that series.
-
Another group picked the series up. Chapter 17 is up on Mangadex. That was faster than I expected.

Hurray that escalated quickly! Good.

Last 24 hours has felt like a very pleasant avalanche of WHA! lol

Yep. News of an official English license, only to find out the person that's been scanlating it would be dropping it (but 1 scanlated chapter put out and 2 translated but not scanlated chapters too), then an actual group picking it up that will hopefully go at a quicker pace rather than just an individual working with whoever they can find like before. Parts 16 and 17 were already translated to some extent though. The first actual new chapter from the new group will be 18 whenever that happens.

I'm just glad to (hopefully) have some…regularity, ya know? Whenever they come out, the reassurance that there's an actual group, actually working on it. It's comforting!
Because I have to say, I'm in love w/ the art style! This if my first exposure to this mangaka, and I'm floored with every turn of the page! The story's great, the characters are too, but MAN, this art!! Can't get enough lol -
It isn't her first thing but she's only had one other series (and a one shot) and it's only 15 chapters long. Hopefully it gets translated eventually. You should go check out her Twitter too because she posts a lot of art on it. She doesn't have a lot of official stuff but she's been drawing for a long time still. She posted some stuff she drew early in high school here:
Edit: There's actually a lot more pages from the stuff in that Twitter post on her Pixiv.

New chapter
https://mangadex.org/chapter/414619/1
Agete is now Agathe to make it closer to the katakana spelling. Riche also gets her talking in third person back which really wasn't kept in the previous translation.
-
Nice to see we're getting a look at Riche. She was always the mysterious one.
-
hum I don't think I ever read Agathe by Agete. Either way she has parental issues.
I wonder why Riche only wants to do her kind of magic and nothing else. -
Because she's a child that doesn't see the bigger picture and just wants to do what she likes doing.
-
Damn, this manga is so good! So damn good! Thanks Sakonosolo for having that avatar, since it was that that made me curious about this series.
The art is so endearing. It is more than simply beautiful, it is captivating. Just looking at the characters doing nothing is a pleasure, I keep looking at panels and wishing the speech bubbles weren't there blocking part of the drawings. Like, just look at the panels with Alaira, you can get the "magic" vibe just by looking at her… And that's important, I tried reading Fairy Tail and Black Clover at some point and I was really put out by how magic and witches were just used as names for "super powers" and "super powered humans", those titles absolutely lack the mystic that is supposed to be evoked by magic and this manga nails it down!
Also, the characters. I don't usually care about the "teacher/mentor" archetype, they are always characters that I don't actively hate but I don't like either, I just find them plain boring (Kakashi, Shanks, Urahara, the Kakashi rip off in Jujutsu Kaisen, etc.), but I really like Qifrey. He is genuinely lovely, to the point that, even though I always like villain, when he was portrayed as shady on the second chapter I was seriously rooting for him to not follow the common place of the goody good teacher who turns out to be bad. Thank god this manga apparently refuses to go obvious, like how it was so obvious Agathe was going to mess everything up because of her desire to stand out... except no!
And talking about the girls, I also adore how they are convincing as kids. Sure, they are mature, but they still come out as kids rather than mini adults. The whole group in the atelier has an amazing dynamic (and somehow Orugio became the improvement I didn't knew it needed).Too bad Ramsus-kun dropped the scanlation, the quality of the scan was really high, but I admit I was relieved when I got to chapter 17 and Agathe suddenly started being named properly (I mean, it was pretty obvious her name was supposed to be that since it was first mentioned and that was bothering me every time someone said her name. I don't know why they chose Agete when the romanization for アガット should be quite obvious... I suppose the mangaka romanized the name as Agete somewhere and Ramsus-kun decided to respect it?). I hope the new group will keep doing it, just found out about this gem and don't want to miss it.
p.s.: Sometimes the manga aesthetics remind me of Nausicäa. That's as big a compliment as it can get.
-
Agathe doesn't fit perfectly with Agatto either but it's definitely closer. Tartar's name is also off as the katakana is "taata" while Tartar would be "taataa". I don't think the names have been romanized, they're spelled out in katakana in the margins every magazine chapter. Which is why I don't know why the original translator went with Qifrey as the spelling. I expect some inconsistencies with the official translation when it comes out. And the new scanlation group says they're continuing. Apparently one of the people is on vacation right now so chapter 19 will be a little bit but I'm hoping they catch up to the most recent chapters at some point.
Volume 4 is also coming out in September so I'm waiting to see what the cover art will look like. There's a sticker pack that's being sold that has all the current covers as well as other art that looks like it could be used for covers so I expect one of them to be the new cover.

I hope it's the top middle one.

And the test (and conservation tactic apparently) is underway.
-
And now we have penguin griffins. Dude.
-
Merffins are absolutely adorable.
So Agate has a complex because she's beneath her families standards.
Richie has a complex because adults forced her separation from her sister, and forced her to do things that goes against her principals of individuality.
Nice to see the side characters developing.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think it's Riche's brother. It looked like a girl but she calls them "nii" which is brother I think.
-
Could be, i was reading on the phone.
Also how can they be seen drawing magic circles if they are cloaked into mergriffins? -
I wonder if people wearing the mantles can see each other normally. Or maybe Alaira is just so experienced that she can tell anyway. In the panels showing them as the merfins their clothes are gone (their hats aren't) but maybe if they pull a notepad out of their pocket, or wherever it is, it isn't affected by the illusion magic.
-
I want a fucking Merffin so bad

Apparently we'll be every other week until it catches up. I'm glad it actually seems that's going to happen.

How far behind we are?
Also both Richèritto and the new guy had awful first teachers. -
Latest chapter is chapter 23, which was last month. The series was on hiatus this month.
