The ironic thing is that I personally made a Mario Maker thread but this doesn't have to just be Odyssey. Reflecting on the plumber's NES days, Mario Kart or Party stuff, whatever will work after the game's talkback has lowered.

I tend to take major Nintendo release reviews with quite a few grains of salt–remember Mario Galaxy 2 being THE BEST MARIO OF ALL TIME though, at this point, I can barely remember playing it, and, well, Breath of the Wild--but I'm legit excited for this one.

The impression I'm getting from reviews is that it has the same main problem that Sunshine and Galaxy 2 did. Most of the game is super fun, but like purple coins in Sunshine and Green Stars in Galaxy 2, there are a few too many Moons that are either tedious or too hidden. So trying to 100% the game isn't really worth it.

Couldn't get into the Galaxy games for some reason. I have yet to beat the 2nd Galaxy game.

Excuse me while I bang my head against the wall a few times. Nothing sounds more thrilling to me than a Mario game where the Purple Coin star everyone seems to be shitting themselves over is the base difficulty, and the harder ones are actually hard, not "I'm a casualnoob and I refuse to try this stage more than 3 times" hard.
People bitching about this is a good sign; I only hope it's more than just a handful out of a sea of cosmetically pretty but brainless moons. That said if a ton of it is legitimately highly hidden, even with the game's built in moon detector mechanics, then I guess if I feel like my usual completionist self I'll just look some of them up at the end. It's not a big deal.

Well, at least unlike the blue* coins in Sunshine, you're allowed to see which moons you've got already.

all i care about is it fun enough for me. GameXplain loved it, but said that hunting for all of them might make you lose steam, which is what I expected. What I really want to start playing dress-up with Mario immediately, cuz aesthetics. Builder Mario? Mafia don Mario? Shirtless summer Mario? So many choices.
I'm just going to avoid the review circus on this one. Because of course all major publications will pretty much claim the game is perfect like with BotW.
For a game like Odyssey it's hard to expect mainstream journalists to have my interests in mind. Stuff like Gamexplain or Arlo are more likely to provide reviews that stand for something in terms of what I value in a 3D Mario game.

Classic style Collectathon Platformers are some of my favorite kind of games. I've loved Mario Galaxy 1+2, Mario 3D Land + World etc, but it does feel like those have been moving towards just linear run and jump Mario games. The return to a more Mario 64/Sunshine style of Platofmer is super exciting to me.

That was a good review, and it's pretty much in line with my current expectations. It'll be solid, but nothing mindblowing. I'm really sad concerning the part about quantity over quality. That's really how you turn collectathons into a chore (see: Korok seeds, and even then those at least were far from a main objective).

well, i've always thought of the "main" Mario series to be ones that use him directly for the typical conventions: power-ups, jumping, save the princess, Bowser, 2D or otherwise. So no on Yoshi's Island, that's more of a "Yoshi" game -> egg throwing, fluttering, platforming in a different way.
I'd count the New. series. As for Land….well they're more unique due to the wackier settings (no Mushroom Kingdom, no Peach and Bowser), but I'd say it's similar enough to count. Mario Maker kinda counts in a greatest hits sort of way, same with All-Stars.
Then you have spin-offs: all sports, Mario vs. DK, Mario Pinball Land, Mario Kart, etc. I realize it's technically all semantics, but it's what I see.

I'm usually pretty happy with Projared's reviews. I always feel like he has a good way of describing things, and even if he ends up liking/disliking something more than me, I still feel like his reviews gave a good indication of what to expect and if it's something I would like or not. Agreed on the collectathon stuff becoming a bit much. There is no need to have over 800 moons to collect, where you could easily go down to one to two hundred tops.
I know the camera works fine in Mario games, but it's been a while since I played Galaxy, and while I loved both games, I remember having camera troubles on more than a few occasions.

The only way those are timelines is in terms of real life release dates of two different gameplay styles lol.
Started to play it and so far i enjoyed it.
Nintendo seems to make collect-a-TON games for the Switch, which can be a pleasing and a burden.
I guess for my first run through the game, i will focus on each world for one-two hours, before tackling the next, because searching and obtaining all those moons would take a ton of time and makes the experience dull.
So i normally don´t care about completing a game for 100%, but with Odyssey it could be fun to come back to it again and again over time, trying to find some new moons and by that messing around in the worlds to find them. (also as far as i know right now, you should re-visit a world multiple times over the course of the game anyway)
As expected from Nintendo the worlds are full of little call-backs and jokes. It really makes you often smile while playing it.
The different outfits and collecting stuff you can obtain, gives a good purpose to collect coins, but isn´t something i am crazy about.
The first three worlds i played weren´t as big as i imagined them to be after seeing the trailers, but they´re still huge for Mario standards and full of little tasks and i enjoyed exploring them.
I needed some time to get used to the controlling, but as always after time i got better and better with it, but i see enough potential to use the different moves more efficiently.
The normal jumps feel a bit short, but that might be me first having to get used to it.
Still i missed a fair amount of jumps i was certain Mario should be able to do. Camera was fine, but in two parts i had problems with it, but nothing frustrating.
Platforming wise there wasn´t anything too difficult, but whoever still expect a Mario game testing their oh so good platforming skills to the fullest must have lived under a rock.
The few boss fights i had so far were good, but you shouldn´t ever die to them.
I sure hope in later levels the difficulty rams up a bit, but the first levels did a good job getting me used to the handling.
The themes of the worlds were enjoyable but nothing unheard of, still exploring them for the first time is a great experience.
Controlling your enemies is a damn good concept and makes it an even richer experience.
It gives this game a lot of appeal, but it´s a concept fitting for this game and shouldn´t be used in each following Mario game as a must have in my opinion.
So my first impression of the game is, that it´s a fantastic game almost everyone should enjoy exploring, but it´s a Mario game.
That includes that it has many fantastic aspects, but also that it isn´t as challenging as some would hope it to be or that you will witness something completely new and creative never seen before.
You get the worlds in a new look you expect in a Mario game and you do the stuff you do in those games.
Most people enjoy the concept and so do i, but it being the best Mario game ever…well, for that i have to play it to the end and then a few more times to rank it ultimately among all the Mario games (I played).
It´s a damn great one, thats for sure.

It's in the name. "New" Super Mario Bros was a reimagining of Super Mario Bros, so "New" Super Mario Bros 2 should have been a reimagining of Super Mario Bros 2 (which it was I guess… the Japanese version).

Yeah, it's not really a literal "timeline" of the games, but just a segregation of the linear and…less linear 3D Mario games.

I think he's referring to the tendency we all had to spend time just messing around with the controls and making Mario do strange things. Mario 64 was the first game many of us played in 3D, making it a magical experience that can probably never be recaptured.
