Just when you think English politics can not possibly get any worse.
Boris clever new plan to just close the parliment again in the same way after it was declared illegal seems like a sensible course to take. It is amazing that no one else ever thought of that one
Erdogan lost the elections in Istanbul this summer. If the opposition parties keep their alliance against Erdogan, maybe they can "overthrow" (big word) the current president. But there won't be any election before 2023…
Nobel prizes for Literature being given out to a Polish author pissing off the nationalists in her country (that's good!) and a Miloslevic apologist (that's fucking bad)
something something land of contrasts
Also there will never be a more 2019 thing than pulling this bullshit with Handke literally just a year after y'all skipped the Nobel due to a controversy haha what the fuck guys
I never saw Poland as a country full of nationalists. Or is this a common trend to most countries near Germany?
Poland's been doing a fast slide into right-wing authoritarianism, like Hungary.
I never saw Poland as a country full of nationalists.
It isn't, it's about 50/50 or 60/40.
The problem is that the opposition is fragmented and the nationalists win elections with the prospect of more social benefits (especially child benefits). The refugee crisis did the rest.
What do you guys think about Victor Orban losing a lot of cities including Budapest in the local elections?
Welp seems like the EU and the UK are in agreement.
But the NI aren't having it it seems.
Guess it is up to the Parliment.
What do you guys think about Victor Orban losing a lot of cities including Budapest in the local elections?
If i had any belief in the Hungarian system this could've been a good start. But i fear it is like when Erdogan seems to "losing" in any way, we all know how it turns out in the end.

It's pretty nice that the opposition could finally get some victories, but many people think it won't be as great as it seems. Money does have to come from somewhere, and if it's a Fidesz district competing with an opposition one, guess who gets more financial benefits.
Also, I heard that in Győr, the winner was a man accused of doing drugs and banging prostitutes. Some of the acts have supposedly been caught on camera and he still got elected. So there's that.
Nonetheless, I was very surprised to see the results. I voted, of course, but had little faith. We'll see what happens.
What has politics in Hungary come to if a little whoring and snorting is enough to disqualify you from holding public office. What's next? No corruption? What is even the point of getting into politics in those circumstances

Why would anyone want to become a politician, if not for being able to build multiple stadiums on taxpayer's dime.
Are we going into another delay or will it be a No-Deal-Brexit…? So many questions.

Maybe this is just how it's going to be from now on. Too invested to just admit they fucked up and end it, but they know they can't actually do it.
The first past the goalpost system has looked better.
The UK is a man about to jump off a bridge while the EU is the cop trying to talk him down but really wishes he would just jump already because it's been ten hours.
Same-Sex Marriage is now legal in Northern Ireland.
Are we going into another delay or will it be a No-Deal-Brexit…? So many questions.
Will be veeeeerrrryyyy interesting if the EU for whatever reason don't grant an extension as there seems to be little to no realistic plan from the remain alliance if this situation happens to be an outcome.
Anyhow, irrelevant of the outcome of brexit in October, lets bring on a GE and lets remove all the liars (and I don't mean brexiteers before any pro-remain people make that particular snipe, I mean those who stood on for parties and jumped to opposition parties that made their campaign promises null and void)
In a new "Boris Johnson is Trump v. 2", the Brit decides that single mothers are shit:

He did write this in 1995, but it's just more examples of sexism on him. He certainly hasn't tried to make up for it.
Sounds like fairly typical beliefs of a conservative raised in the 70's. Maybe a smidge more old timey than most since modern people don't really throw around words like illegitimate child or dickensian hopes about workhouses or whatever. But i doubt it costs him any significant amount of votes, most conservative people adhere to beliefs in that general ball park. Children aren't brought up proper and it is because of the loss of the nuclear family and the lower classes sounds like a general talking point for any tory candidate. Sprinkle on something about immigrants and being too soft on crime and you've got the bog standard conservative
Shall we talk about the history of Mr Corbyn? Should find that his history is much much worse than Mr Johnsons
Anything beyond him being a communist and an anti-semite?
What's wrong about being a communist ?
Also, not liking Jews is just the norm among tankies.
What's wrong about being a communist ?
Because two of the worst dictator governments in the world (China and Russia) are or were communist.
Communism is mostly socialism taken to an extreme, and extremes are never good, as history has shown again and again.

Nothing really. But it doesn't earn you any points with the British electorate.

Sadly more often than not true. Leaning pro-palestine politicians seem to invariably spill over into general anti-semitism. Oh i'm sorry i meant zionism, as comrade Corbyn says.
IRA 'links' perhaps
Well i knew his sympathise tend to lie with the opressed masses in general so i wouldn't be suprised if he was sympathetic to the IRA cause. But i hadn't heard anything substantial about him being linked to homegrown terrorists

Modern day China is about as communist as i am Hawaiian so we might as well just use the past tense here.

True enough, but it still technically counts itself as communist officially. Unfortunately.
Communism is mostly socialism taken to an extreme, and extremes are never good, as history has shown again and again.
It's more correct to say Socialism is Communism taken lightly, because the idea of socialism is to gradually evolve into communism.
Modern day China is about as communist as i am Hawaiian so we might as well just use the past tense here.
True still a shitty government that spends it's days throwing their wealth and influence around…....not that we're in a position to talk.

Being communist doesn't mean worshipping Stalin or Mao.
There are many reasons as to why communism fails, and the "ideology itself" isn't an option imo.

How very French of you, or maybe rather how European. I mean in mainland yuuurop theres a communist (or communistish) party in virtually every nation, they usually don't win more than a smattering of votes here or there, but they eke out a living being an everlasting fringe party. Meanwhile in the UK or the US the Communist party is like twelve men in bolshevik beards. Especially the US stamped down hard on any homegrown support, or anyone remotely sympathetic to communism really

Of course not. But it's because of those two dictators that communism has such a horrible reputation in many countries.

Don't forget they had spin-offs all over the Soviet Union. With their own worship cults and hymns written about them.

I think the issue with communism is that no one ever really tried to build it without totalitarism.
In theory there should be a period of socialism (communism lite, as KageKageKing said) where people realize and acknowledge it's benefits before going fully red. But every time someone got in power with socialist or communist ideals they were also dipshits as persons and became dictators.
Samething for fascism, every single fascist regime so far as also being a dictatorship despite that not being a pre-requisite.
Looking at fictional examples, in Starship Troopers the Earth is a fascist regime that holds real elections while still upholding and enforcing the same ideals of strengh/power and individual merit.
As a european I always found USA's reaction to the very word Communist to be hilarious.
I've seen the Communist Parties respectfully using the political system and was taught that the problem with the regimes of USSR and such were the fault of the men who became dictators not the ideals bythemselves. So we can disagree on it's merits and still inahbit the same space. You say Commie in the US and you get banned from the city, tied to a mule.

Kind of ironic, as the SU was an atheist nation.

The Cold War was a bitch. Also Joseph McCarthy was an asshole.

The US relationship to communism can best be summarized by subtle ol' Stan Lee.

They are ugly unthinking brutes who also have kooky space age technology that will destroy us all.
Labour's strategy still being "we're totally behind Brexit but it'll be a vague Left Brexit and also we keep willingly outing ourselves as anti-semites" astounds me.

This is a perfectly fair description of Brezhnev.

True. But it's not like Nixon is a prize either.

He looks wholesome. The way he gently strokes the grain does not make me question what he gets up to at all. You gotta figure the whole world was a simpler place to do propaganda in before everything could be snarked about online.

These cults were truly, terrifyingly otherworldy.
They do say that in betwenn all the wanton murder, paranoia and cruelty Stalin was a pretty fun guy. Atleast compared to the as murderous but less fun monsters who made up his inner circle.
Sounds better than Hitler who supposedly could get carried away when hearing bad news…..as I'm sure Downfall has made infamous.

It's not just cults, propaganda and cult of personality. Stalin, among other communist leaders such as Mao or Ho Chi Minh, was in fact naturally highly charismatic
I’m sitting this one out.
