This is an episode that Henry Thurlow has been hyping up for a few months now and according to the staff list in Newtype he, Ishizuka, and even Nagamine himself are contributing to the storyboard, plus Tu's been gushing over it's animators on twitter today so it should be another good one!

Oh man, Big Mom has such a sexy voice. Everytime she talks I smile.

I love the little touches the anime team adds.

Like having zeus dodge through Kidds defense to attack him directly.

It makes these emperors feel like emperors compared to the main story

I also loved the little scene of Kaidou regaining his balance after been hit by luffy.

A really nice way of showing how agile and elite he is.

I like it.

I dred the moment we have to go back to the lower level of Onigashima.

Great episode. Seriously, this episode was great as Episode 1015. There were so much stuff I like about the episode, I got a laughed from Big Mom's reaction to Luffy not being effected by Zeus' lighting attack and she had her own version of the Eneru reaction. Also Zoro and Killer's attacks on Kaido were animated wonderfully. Tonight's To Be Continued sign is one of my favourite To Be Continued for the series.

Whew, feels fitting to watch this episode during a heatwave!

First off, I'm going to say that I'm shocked that this episode actually covered more than a single chapter (the last few pages of 1001 and the entirety of 1002). I've been saying for a long time that when it comes to covering chapters like this, which are straight action, predominantly double page spreads, and have few to no cutaways the anime staff should just grit their teeth and take the hit and go 1:1.5 or whatever so they won't have to aggressively pad the episode out with dead air. The manga's far enough ahead they should be able to afford it every once in a while.

That was definitely not empty hype from Thurlow. I was genuinely shocked that the episode was just action, action, action, never let up, and all of it was extremely high quality coming from an army of webgen animators like Vincent Chansard, Archiel, Yen Bm, and many more anchored by the regulars like Tu, Henry Thurlow, and of course Ishizuka, whom we hadn't seen in a minute it felt like (the hiatus not helping, of course). 1017 serves as a really nice complement to 1015 and either one of those episodes would've been utterly unthinkable coming from One Piece at any point prior to Wano outside of the bigger movies. The 1015/1017 duo sets an absurdly high bar.

Wow, 10/10 episode. Amazing action and animation. Did not feel like much filler either. Just straight fire from beginning to end.

Oh yeah, I want to call out how well Toei has been using CGI with Kaido's dragon form. Pretty much every other TV production on the planet would simply use the CG model straight-up without bothering to hide it or caring how jarring it would look against the 2D drawings and animation, yet Toei's been using the dragon model sparingly and have been really smart about integrating it with the rest of the picture. Kid's giant scrap mecha was also integrated a whole heck of a lot better than his giant arm was during Shigeyasu Yamauchi's episode earlier in Onigashima.

I also love the contrast with Luffy and Kid getting these elaborate battle form transformations and then you have Law just floating around on some rocks just wearing blue jeans and a buttoned shirt.

I don't usually follow the anime all that often, but I'm glad I did today.

The animation team really did this episode some justice. It'll be really refreshing to see if they can keep up this energy throughout the fight.

I think some of these moves don't translate the power and capability of some of the pirates all that well in the manga which obviously isn't the case here. I mean Killers presence in the series just took a giant step up with his contribution, which is great to see as we've got little competition from to anyone from the SH crew outside of this guy. Unless you count bepo or something.

This looks movie quality, did toei sell everything it had and put it all on roof piece. I hope they plan to keep this quality until the end of wano arc( and future arcs) and they didn't spend the budget for the next years all on roof piece fanservice.

The quality of these episodes is only determined by the staff working on them.

So know, this quality won't be consistent. Just look to the previous episodes to see how different the quality can get

Wow. Just watched it… wow. that's all I can say. Bravo to the anime staff.
It's up to the anime to elevate the manga material now. For the first time ever, the anime's slow pace is a benefit if they keep correctly fleshing stuff out that was so rushed in the manga. Let's see the anime can make me like what's to come, it seems possible at this rate.
