Really? We rushed through their entire relationship and I still felt no attachment to them or to her sacrifice.
I'm guessing that it's supposed to be revealed at a later time that what she was told about Earthchildren is nowhere near the truth. They're born as Earth's immune system to protect the planet, what she actually does is save pedestrians, rescue hostages, stop robbers and… save stranded whales? Where were the other few thousand people she could've been replaced with when the asteroid arrived? Why was she the Earth's only hope?
Akane-banshi was much better at making me like the characters

My assumption is that they aren't the actual main characters this whole first chapter is a set up for the real main character their child (whom I think may inherit her powers)
If I'm wrong then I pretty much agree with you.
I could have liekd this more if they removed all the unnecessary narration and internal monologues.
I'm equally intregued and off-put by this chapter. I agree that the relationship was rushed in a way that one could not really get attached to neither them as lovers nor the the characters themselves. While I can see that this is for the sake of having the chapter end with the child being the next generation, I wonder if the many of the evenzmts now wouldn't have been better held back for a flashback reveal at a later point.
The premise itself is interesting enough to make want to see where this is going. But the creative decision to have those things happen in chapter 1 at breakneck speed make me wonder if the writing will be any good. Guess I will have to wait and see.
So they did a bait and switch with the genre of the manga and the hook is having people wonder what this is actually about? Spoilers and official media said that this was a romance manga between a hero and a civilian.
Other than that, I don't see the point of stating that earthchildness is not inherited and is determined during pregnancy, only to have the son also be an earthchild and develop powers the exact moment the mother dies. Could be a hint that we were given false info, but my guess is that it's only there to differentiate from MHA's premise.
I liked the girl but they went too strong on the hero worship from the mc.
Last couple pages after the marriage I feel were strong. Him not wanting her to go. Her telling him she has no choice. Her slowly trying her best without dying and having to do the ultimate sacrifice. Him crying on the building with their kid as he reveals his power. And all that with some great narration with her thoughts about how strong their love was and would have left earth to die if she could and how she trust him to raise their kid.
I think those last pages are a strong foudation for an heartwarming story of this single dad trying to raise his kid the right way.
I have mixed feelings.
I like the landing point story of a single dad who will raise his kid with conflicting emotions about how and why to use their powers, but the prologue didn't leave a lasting impression on me. It almost feels as if I'd read a one-shot that didn't get selected but was instead recycled into a different story. Early on I thought this was going to be about super girl x normal guy and their relationship, which might have been interesting in itself. But then it's like the author changes their mind and we fast-forward until they're married and have a kid, cue mom gets armageddoned before we really get to know her… Pacing-wise, this could have afforded to be spread over 2-3 intro chapters, or cut their meeting story entirely. The super-powers aspect isn't stellar either and I'm not fond of the hero worship.
I will read the next few chapters and see if it picks up.
I'm intrigued. Will they skip ahead and chapter 2 will have a teenager doing hero stuff or will we follow a slower approach to the raising of the child ?
I could have liekd this more if they removed all the unnecessary narration and internal monologues.
This, it's off-putting because of how dry everything was told. I don't really care about the emotions the author was trying to sell to us in this chapter either, I'm guessing this will end up as a dud.
I really liked it once I figured out it wasn't telling us the long term story of their romance, and it was just giving us a quick highlights prologue.
What direction it goes next chapter is super duper crucial though.
Still no closer in knowing what kind of manga it will be but I enjoyed the 2nd chapter.
The 2d chapter was worse than tue first one and will be the mast one on my side
Still a bit iffy on this series but at least the chapter had an overall better flow than the first.
The artist really likes to draw characters with an arched back and sticking out the butt. Not only the girl, the guy too.
I am mildly interested in seeing whatever it is the men in black want to reveal (my money is on vat-grown clones), but other than this the chapter just didn't work for me. Chapter 3 is as far as I will go, unless there is big twist that turns around the tables.
God this series is boring. Time to drop it
Wait, so the whole stor now is going to be a past journal of the baby looking back on his life? What, is this trying to be Saga?
I can see what the author is going for emotionally but yeah I'm just not feeling it. I think I'm done on this one.
Right. Goodbye, Earthchild.
Far too much inner monologing going on for my taste. Still gonna read it until it gets cancelled.
6 chapters in and still only set ups an nothing that resembles an arc. I know that this is just the beginning but even then manga usually have very small arc. One Piece for instance was four chapters into Shellstown at this point. Really curious how this manga is doing.
It's U19 material. This was probably the result of having a good one shot material and wanting to test the waters with parenting as a theme in Shonen Jump. The result is a hilariously bad millenial dad who only realized his son has been suffering for a whole day after checking his selfies.
Not sure what U19 means but I wholeheartadly agree with everything else you said.^^
Sorry to revive this but I was wondering if there's anyone besides me that kept reading this? Just curious because this is bad, like really bad but yet it keeps not getting axed week after week it's hilarious. Kinda makes me wonder, what sectrets the author knows about one of Shueisha's higher ups for this thing to keep running.^^
This think still out there?' Hilarious.
Jump is really having a problem with editors.
@pariston_hill Yes, it still is. And there hasn't been a single good chapter but for some reason it still seems to be going. It's also nice to see the readers comments at the end of each chapter on Manga Plus. It literally has been "next week is the axe" every single week now.
I honestly have to say that I find some sick pleasure in watching this trainwreck progressing from start to finish. I've never seen something like this. I'm not saying that there aren't worse series out there but still this one isn't good enough to be running several months.
The answer is apparently that there's just been a lot of iffy series lately, and one of the other new series, Ruri ended up having to go on hiatus just 6 chapters in due to an author health thing, and so that ended up saving a magazine slot for a few weeks.
Also Dr. Stone ended real suddenly just a month or two after this series started, and that was a consistent mid-high tier ranking title, so that also freed up a spot that had been held for five years which earned all the new series a few extras weeks of breathing room..
Basically Earthchild has had really lucky timing. If Red Hood had started at the same time in March instead of November it might also have been able to cruise to an inexplicable 25+ chapters.
Time paradox Ghostwriter was never going to get more than 2 volumes though, that thing was in last place even during the safe period. I've never seen a series tank as hard as that one.
One positive: I've actually really enjoyed the romance aspect of the story regarding Reisuke and Kareri. I think Hideo Shinkai has handled them very well. Kinda hoping they tackle a regular ol' romance manga next bc I think they'd be pretty good at it.
Everything else...ehh. It should have wrapped up when reisuke and their son rescued kareri from space. Could have tied things up pretty neatly and given everyone a happy ending. Instead it just kept going...
@QueenTangerine3 That was pretty much what baffled me the most. It was given the chance to actually conclude thing in less a rushed timeframe than other series had the chance to do (most likely because of the lucky timing Robby mentioned). But then it kept going and it just doesn't seem to stop.
Well someone took your criticism to heart
Thank god, it's finally over. What a waste of ink an paper that was.
