Just saw the movie here, and damn did that ending hit hard.

      spoiler

I'll definitely have to rewatch this movie when it's available. There's so much to unpack and process with how emotionally driven the entire thing is.

Also also. Damn Johnny and Yosaku, you guys done be hitting the gym.

Uta’s ability was fascinating. Amazing lore revealed. Sunny’s Klabautermann revealed. Koby’s importance. The admirals’ ideology and strength. Usopp. This movie had a lot of great surprises for manga fans.

Is FIlm Red considered canon, or is it like all (or most) of the other OP movies?

@LuffyKun-0 I'd say it's AU since it takes place after Wano, but Big Mom is still active and fine.

                spoiler

That or this is a really long time after Wano and the current arc with Big Mom recovering during that lapse?

The story treats it as if it's before Wano because Luffy is called the fifth emperor and Big Mom is in Whole Cake, not Wano. But then Jinbei is here and with the Straw Hats (and all the Straw Hatsa are here even) so it doesn't fit into the canon anywhere. So it's like other movies where the backstory and focus character (Uta) are canon but the events of the movie themselves are not.

I'm not going to talk about the plot or music of the film (I thought they were great), but did anyone else pick up on how much of the film's digital drawing looked rushed?

Toei Animation was hacked earlier this year, impacting production on all their animated shows. The One Piece anime was in hiatus for 5 weeks and the Dragon Ball Super film was delayed by 2 months. Film Red was in production during the hack yet the release date never changed. It was concerning when the animation switched to using post production filters very close to release, and even the film itself has tweaks made on the scenes seen in the trailer.

I found it difficult to ignore the imperfections while watching on the big screen, the filters can't hide them all. Plenty of great animated sequences, but the static and dialogue heavy scenes contain many off-model characters and is generally missing a certain level of polish. The film would look quite ugly without the post-production filters. They even forgot to add the filter on one shot, perhaps a last minute addition which they didn't have time to work on? Nearly every shot in STAMPEDE had consistent and well drawn on-model characters. Comparing with Film RED it's night and day.

@dropper The hack didn't affect the film at all, the post processing studio was just different outside of Uta's musical numbers and tried to get the same style as the anime but obviously wasn't a resounding success. Art wise, the film has 20 different animation supervisors and over 150 key animators which is rather large by One Piece standards, which needless to say is a result of probably both Oda's designs and director Goro Taniguchi not being 100% with how Toei works and does things, Oda and co needing to approve various aspects of the film probably didn't help either.

I saw it in IMAX and found the sound to be almost an assault at times (quite impactful but still). I'm going to see it again with a friend if he's available and hopefully the sound is dialled back just enough for me to be able to appreciate it a little more. As it stands I like that they did something different rather than just have another strong antagonist who can take on all our favourite characters with ease until they unlock their most powerful form.

In some ways I felt it mimicked earlier OP films (i.e Gold) where characters are caught and have to think their way out of the situation rather than just kick, punch and slash their way free (for those expecting action there is that as well).

I think your enjoyment of the film will depend on whether you're okay with a One Piece film having elements of a musical which Red unapologetically does. Time will tell if its remembered as a decent entry in the series but I give the production team props for trying something different at least this once (for those who want a traditional One Piece film you're going to have to wait for the inevitable next one which given Red's financial success will already be in the early planning stages).

Huh I wasn't aware of the hacking thing. For me I was only caught off guard every time there was cgi (namely Uta's movements) in the middle of regular 2D stuff. Bit jarring for me.

One Piece Film Red has earned over 18 billion ¥ (around 122.4 million $) in Japan!!! Eiichiro Oda drew a new poster to celebrate it.

Saw it in the theater with my family last night. It was alright if very annoying to my senses half the time. All those flashy effects and colors gadzooks! The way the songs were implemented did not do it for me and I am one who generally loves that kind of thing. Enjoyed Strong World, Z, Gold and Stampede far far more.

I liked the first five minutes or so, got shivers when Uta started singing and the feeling of watching OP on the big screen hit me. Got bored half-way through that first song and all went downhill from that point. Only other moment I enjoyed were the final Uta/Luffy/Shanks scenes.

Definitely a step-up from Stampede, but still terrible to my taste. If it wasn't OP, I would probably have left after 20 minutes, but I would feel bad doing it with this franchise.
The worst parts were definitely the action scenes, I couldn't understand what was going on half the time, it was like someone tied a camera to a moving swing and I had to make sense out of what it recorded. But all the other scenes also seemed to have a pacing problem, there was not really time for anything to breathe - neither drama, humor, nothing. I am really curious if kids are able to follow this movie, maybe that's the rhythm they are used to and I am just old and disconnected?

Anyways, I won't keep going because I don't to rain on anyone's parade, so I will end with a positive note: I really appreciate the screen time given to Brulee.

I hate it that Oda is on board with bloating the movie with an infinity of cameos and call it a day (he wanted to include Crocodile, Doffy and Enel on top of that, for god's sake)

I watched it 2 days ago and liked it. Loved the songs (Uta/Ado's voice is really powerful), loved the drama and emotional moments, and to me, there is something about the entire world being at stake that actually feels threatening this time around compared to Shiki's plan of unleashing the beasts all over the world (or was it just East Blue? I forgot) in Strong World and Zephyr trying to blow up the End Points in Z. My only gripe is that the animation gets really hectic and too fast in the action scenes, especially in the climatic battle. The story and emotional core did a good job on making me engaged throughout the entire runtime.

It's such a refreshing One Piece experience to me. After being stuck on Onigashima for 2 years with battles after battles, I get to enjoy a fun music-centered movie that has a lot of heart in it with minimal action. I really appreciate that.

Finally managed to see the movie tonight! It was a lot of fun, especially managing to make it there relatively spoiler-free. Definitely doesn't top Baron Omatsuri or Gold, but puts up a strong front against the other One Piece movies I've seen.

So yeah, a good time overall despite a few nitpicks and a slow patch in the middle. I'll definitely give it another watch and add the DVD to my collection when that comes out. It's got my recommendation.

A devil fruit user being noticeably weakened by throwing a bucket of water at them is not something that follows the canon rules.

This bothered me as well, but I took it as another hint that we left the real world are in Uta's dreamworld so it wasn't something that bothered me. Though I saw the movie twice so it might be due to this.

Observation Haki letting you see through the eyes of another is a fun gimmick for a non-canon fight, but it has no basis in the actual story.

I always thought Momo did something like that with Zouneisha, or was I tripping when I read the Zou chapters?

Oh! That's a good angle on it. The dreamworld reveal was long enough after that scene that I didn't even think of it.

I interpret that as a Voice of All Things moment rather than a haki one, but I guess the lines between the two can be thin, so who knows.

As far as the Films go I'll put RED in the same ballpark as GOLD so I enjoyed it even if it's less cohesive than the latter movie and less newcomer-friendly. Strong World and Z are still the ones to beat and RED did feel like another take on Z's formula even past the surface-level simularities. While I did joke that the premise of Shanks secretly having a daughter who's also a pop idol and Luffy's childhood friend is a very 2022 One Piece plot, and RED is very much 2020s One Piece, I'll echo the sentiment that after four years of Wano purgatory it was nice to have a more (relatively) self-contained story with a solid, even surprising, emotional core and without most of the baggage that's dogged my enjoyment of the story lately.

I echo your sentiment as the last film had the Strawhat crew, the supernova and their allies take on a former member of Roger's crew who still carries immense strength and power. In the manga/TV series Luffy has fought his toughest opponent yet who's had stamina for days and was only defeated through a team effort and Luffy experiencing another power up (one I was happy to see). Its about time that a One Piece film had a different type of antagonist that wasn't a case of "I'm incredibly strong and powerful, come at me".

Let's face it. Chances are the next OP film will have an antagonist that has links to one of the series' great pirates and will be mega strong in order to satisfy the shounen hordes once more. On this occasion I'm glad that film Red went down a different path (I'll make the arguement that the film's title should have been One Piece film: Uta though).

Regardless of how fans feel about film Red its success means there will be another OP film in the future (and provides a chance for it to be even more successful and widely regarded).

                                                                        • #2 highest-earning Opening Weekend of all time in Japan.
                                                                        • #6 most weekends at #1 of all time in Japan (13 weeks, 11-consecutive).
                                                                        • #7 most overall weeks in the Top 5 of all time in Japan (19 weeks, 17-consecutive).
                                                                        • #6 most overall weekends in the Top 10 of all time in Japan (24 weeks, 20-consecutive).

Those are some pretty impressive stats. Its made great box office in its home country and I imagine if it ever returns to Japanese theatres (or they do a special live version of it with Ado and a band/orchestra) it will pass that 20b¥ amount.

I think I'll get this when it comes to Blu-ray or 4K if we're lucky. Hopefully by then we start hearing murmurings of when the next One Piece film is expected (I'm guessing Summer 2025) or that its entered production which could be this year.
