Film Red comes to DVD & Blu-Ray July 11th.
That's great for the US. Any signs of a UK release date yet? I know I can watch it online but its nice to own the physical version and you support the creators that way too.

One Piece Film Red Anime Comic Vol. 01 and 02 covers!!
For anyone interested, One Piece Film Red is available on Amazon Prime. Also if anyone is interested, at least in my region it had Spanish and, shockingly, Catalan dub options (+ japanese).
And, again, if anyone is interested. . .watching it for the first (and I think last) time, I found it pretty mediocre. Kudos for trying something different with the songs (some of which are actually pretty good + they are quite varied) and they did try to flesh out Uta as the central character and driving force of the movie.
But man, 2 hours of this movie was kinda rough to get through. The animation, designs, direction, "camera" work. . .it's all really cheap. The "big" action beats don't land (plus, not a fan of the whole "big enemy so everyone can do 1 attack in a void-like scenery", which is eerily similar to Stampede), and even with all the care put into Uta, something was missing. Or lacking. I don't know.
The same day I watched Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and even if flawed (and it IS flawed), it feels like a proper movie? The action is spectacular? There's tons of attention to detail and little character quirks that give it life? There's some genuinely funny moments? Here, I'm struggling to think of a single moment where I went "ok, that was good".
It's not a trully terrible movie, but it's really, really mediocre. Maybe I should just stop trying to enjoy One Piece movies, cause the last 3-4 are absolutely NOT doing it for me.
I've gotta agree with you, I watched Red the other day and was pretty unimpressed.
Admittedly, a large part of that is that I simply prefer the older movies, where the Strawhats would just stumble across a random island and have an adventure, and they weren't so concerned with making everything a Big Deal and cramming in a load of cameos. But this one didn't even feel particularly well animated, when your big movie budget fight scenes are getting outshone by the TV series that's just sad.

This is interesting, we had the opposite happen over here. The little quirks and attention to detail in Super Hero that you're talking about is what I like from DB, and to be honest I should finish the movie before commenting more... I roughly know about the powers at the end of the movie so I don't doubt it's a fantastic payoff.
It's just that, if we're going to compare OP and DB's movies, 40 mins into the movie it didn't feel like much happened compared to where Film Red was already at by that point. We were okay to call it for the night and opted to finish later.
I saw DBS, the Battle of Gods, and Resurrection F, but I didn't see the Broly movie... Despite missing only one movie, I was kinda annoyed to realize it felt like it was required to see that one to make sense of some new characters hanging with Goku, I think. If I was behind on OP in general and saw Red there's that, but it feels like DBS is in a weird situation with the manga, movies, and television series somewhat doing their own thing.
No idea on the "not well animated" or "cheap animation" comments for Red though, maybe we all saw something different.
Since it is on crunchyroll I finally was able to finish that movie. Movie gold I was able to see at the theaters back then and I believe that was the reason I was enjoying it. Movie red is fun in the beginning due to the music and it was nice that the movie would fit in the overall cosmos of One Piece given the fact "everyone was sleeping". However in the end I didnt like it at all because I was fucking bored - I had to wind back multiple times because I nodded off. My gold standard for entertaining anime movies that are based on an ongoing series are the Detective Conan movies. Those are fun to watch. I do understand all those anime movies are fanservices in the sense of showing off the traits of the characters etc. But i was bored as hell while watching One Piece. Maybe that movie was made in a way you have to see at in the cinema to enjoy. I dont know. I m really surprised that movie did so well in Japan.
