Yamato did not join, so we can talk about Bonney again...

Yep, similar to Jinbe's case. I dunno about Bonney though. I think she'd fun to be around Luffy, at least.

You think so. Jinbe was specifically asked by Luffy, and simply postponed to take care of a specific and finite task, which then lead him on the path of Luffy anyway.

Yamato, Kinemon and Momo all fall under the Vivi/Shirahoshi category.

Well once again, I dunno about Kinemon and Momo, but I'd figure Yamato is also wanting to postpone joining Luffy for now to at least get a feel of Oden's path in Wano before that path leads her elsewhere. I wouldn't agree that Yamato is the same as Vivi or Shirahoshi though, since Vivi and Shirahoshi weren't delaying any voyages to sea for the sake of following a certain path from what I understood.

Really though, I find it odd how people talk of Yamato's choice as if it will prevent her from ever meeting Luffy again, even though Oden's path involved him going to Laugh Tale with the future Pirate King and as if Yamato can't get curious about the missing info Oden had in his journal, like about Joy Boy. Almost as if people don't want Yamato to be happy after all her years of being trapped and not being able to have long-term friends of her own.

At this point, I think it's not just a matter of "if", but "when."

Yamato was extended the same offer as Momo and Kinemon, namely if they want to become pirates again, they are always welcomed on board of the Sunny.
That´s the same offer Vivi has gotten imo, if she ever wants to sail the seas again, she can always do it, and she will always be called a nakama/shipmate, hence my comparison. And Shira also falls under that, namely that Luffy wants to show her the world above the sea.

All are promises without any specific expiration date, or certainty that it will happen during the journey to get the One Piece. Jinbe on the other hand was: let me just do this one thing, and i will be on the ship immediately afterwards. It´s definitely different if you ask me, especially if you consider that Yamato will need a few years to travel through Wano (as did Oden) but the main journey of the Strawhats will soon come to an end, so the respective promises with the characters of each island will be fulfilled afterwards, maybe in an epilogue seeting even (Vivi, Aisa, Shirahoshi, Rebecca, Coby...).
Of course the Strawhats will meet Yamato again, but i doubt the context will be that she will have finished her Wano travels and is now ready to see the world.

I find it weird how some people are like yeah "i need to see wano first" makes complete sense and that's it. Regardless of what you think about how this character will end up the explanation makes 0 sense since there was no real explanation. We never seen Oden ever think this way, the entire time Oden was shown he was always like "this country is cramped" and he jumped at the first chance to get out. Additionally Yamato should know this from the logbook and if that was a thought Yamato had he should have never been introduced with that. It's a very clear shift and change of mind with no real answer which I hope that at least people can agree on that reality.

Now it's basically just 2 scenarios will Oda give us the answer later or will he just kinda gloss over and try to pretend that the everybody is here moment will hit when he left this hanging this hard. I feel again regardless of outcome people should be able to see which scenario is the one that's more satisfying.

It's essentially the same problem as with Carrot regardless of what you think this character was the absolute absence of material to connect to her becoming the ruler of zou just feels off and not satisfying at all.

And that's where Yamato will have to prioritize and decide for herself what she wants to do and what to gain out of life, which will inevitably divulge from Oden's path, otherwise we can expect her to wait 11 more years, become a daimyo, get married to a wife with two children like Oden did, and get boiled, among other things.

I don't doubt the Laugh Tale part though. After reading through the journal and being keen on Joy Boy for years, I'm willing to believe Yamato is wanting to get more closure on the missing journal info there, whenever she and Luffy are ready for when the day comes.

Hey, I'm new to the forum so I figured I would jump right into the deep end. lol

I'm not backing any character yet. I do feel like we will get one more SH and I think they will have to join while the SHs are in this area of the sea (Wano/Sphinx/Hachinosu/Elbaf). I feel like after that it will be all end game story beats and fights. I'm leaning towards a character we already know because the idea of Oda speed running a new character sounds terrible to me. I'm hoping this character joins before Elbaf as I feel it will be last non end game arc. Having Elbaf be last would solve any "spend time with the crew" issues a lot of candidates would have.

Right now I'm waiting for certain things to happen to narrow my pick down.

@Zin-Magala Yeah, I get the feeling that with Sphinx being a possibility, I can see the next arc being a shorter, more casual one while allowing others things to develop elsewhere beyond the Straw Hat's circles.

I feel the next one will appear very very soon. ANd it will be kind of obvious, even, once the story gets momentum. Like the pre-Robin joinings. But, of course, people will doubt because it's the nature of people, especially after the poorly-handled Yamato fakeout.

Wano predictions: There will be 5 acts; All Straw Hats will get fights, some in Act 4; Big Mom Pirates will arrive; Carrot will have her moment, but won't join; Yamato will be a Kouzuki samurai and Wano's Guardian; Shanks will visit Luffy in Act 5; Next arc is Mary Geoise.

Hancock got her own birthday art in the official Instagram account.

                    Hancock Birthday art

I know it doesn't mean anything, but it's noticeable that only a few characters got theirs: The Straw Hats, Ace, Sabo, Yamato and now Hancock.

                    All characters birthday art

It's interesting that so far, all featured characters were on Episode 1,000 special opening, in which Hancock made a cameo for some reason, despite not being regarded as so important as the other featured ones (Law/Kid, Sabo/Ace, Dragon/Rayleigh) nor featured in the then-current Wano arc (Law/Kid, Yamato). She feels like the odd one out there.

Yamato and Hancock in Episode 1,000 special opening

Doesn't have to mean anything, but one can hope. 😝

I get the understanding that Chapter 1057 left a sour note for many people after how many times Yamato had spoken of wanting to leave and join the Straw Hats, only to delay on that last moment, possibly for more in-depth reasons being kept from readers beyond what Yamato said regarding going on a Wano tour. It all seems to go back to Momo being blamed as the main reason for why Yamato is being "kept" from going out of Wano sooner, but after thinking about the kind of life Yamato has lived, I don't think we should be seeing Momo as the obstacle preventing Yamato from leaving, but as the catalyst.

It just seems to me that for as much as Yamato admired Oden, I've gotten the impression that they never spoke to each other or even bonded, and that Yamato's relationship with Oden before he died was really just that of an admirer looking up to an idol from a distance and nothing more. Yamato instead chatted and bonded more with Ace, sure, but their relationship, from what I saw, never really seemed to get to the point of me seeing Ace as the "Shanks" figure in Yamato's life.

And what I mean by "Shanks" figure is someone Yamato not only bonds with, but also grows to have a shared interest/dream between Yamato and the figure which can give Yamato enough encouragement to sail out with greater purpose, not just in dedication for herself, but also in dedication of someone personal to her who shares the same dream she does, and even get encouragement from the figure to carry it out to the best of her ability.

When I think back to the past, it makes sense to me:

Luffy and Shanks shared an interest of becoming a great pirate.

Zoro and Kuina shared an interest in becoming the greatest swordsman.

Nami and Bell-mere shared an interest in making a map of the world.

Usopp and Banchina shared an interest in the idea of growing brave and strong like Yasopp.

Sanji and Zeff shared an interest in All-Blue.

Chopper and Hiriluk shared an interest in curing any disease in the world.

Robin and Clover shared an interest in finding out the Void Century.

Franky and Tom shared an interest in building a ship that can sail any sea.

Brook and Yorki shared an interest in getting the Rumbar Pirates' final song back to Laboon after reuniting with him.

Jinbe and Tiger shared an interest in friendly coexistence between humans and fish-men.

And when thinking about Yamato's case, I've come to understand that Yamato never really had anyone like that in her life, and that Momo is the first person who can really be a figure like that to her, possibly even go as so far as to share the interest in opening Wano's borders, since both have been shown to be interested in that prior. It could thus give Yamato greater purpose to finally sail out of Wano beyond just being free just for the sake of it, and even go to Laugh Tale with Luffy and the others in getting closure to fill in the missing gaps Oden's journal has.

So going by all of that, at this point, I think it's not just a matter of "if" she'll go out, but when.

@Deicide said in Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World):

Honestly, in general, Yamato felt more relevant at Onigashima than Usopp, even though Usopp is a Straw Hat and Yamato isn't.

I’m not counting Yamato out yet, but more pieces need to move around for her to be in the running again. More than anything, those pieces need to lead to a character arc.

Right now I’m staying in “wait and see” mode for all candidates.

I’m not counting Yamato out yet, but more pieces need to move around for her to be in the running again. More than anything, those pieces need to lead to a character arc.

Right now I’m staying in “wait and see” mode for all candidates.

Totally fair. That's prob the most beneficial way of seeing things for now as opposed to closing all doors and assuming things like Yamato never getting to have fun with Luffy ever again because she's going to be staying on Wano to baby and defend Momo for the rest of her life. Granted, there's no issue with someone taking that view, since they're allowed to of course, but that understandably wouldn't make for a very interesting discussion while we inevitably wait for the last chapter to see what ends up happening in the meantime. As far as I'm concerned, as long as threads like this continue to exist and I continue to be interested and have fun, then I see no problem in having more discussions and speculating more on characters, even if we don't entirely agree.

Well I definitely have thoughts and theories about the different candidates so I’m down to talk about whoever. I just feel it’s too early jump all in on anyone yet since Oda can have character x show up at Sphinx, hand in their last SH forms, and it’s a done deal.

The past decade has made me a cautious person. lol

Honestly, in general, Yamato felt more relevant at Onigashima than Usopp, even though Usopp is a Straw Hat and Yamato isn't.

He didn't just felt, he was more relevant than Usopp.

Oda does give importance to some secondary characters. Yamato wasn't the first one, we need to remember Vivi, Wiper, Law, Bege... And Yamato was up there as one of the most important ones in that list.

But the way his story was concluded (for now, at least) was really bad. Yamato deserved a proper exploration chapter.

I've said for months that Oda did dirty to Carrot and her fans, and now he did dirty with Yamato and his fans.

I'm sure Yamato will return at some point, and maybe then Oda can fix things. But it won't help with the frustration everyone feels right now.

I get the feeling that Chapter 1057 will go down in One Piece history as "the most sour chapter," regardless of how anyone feels about Yamato and Momo or the understanding of Oda revisiting Wano later. Even Vivi, Wyper, Law, and Bege had actual conversations with the Straw Hats before they went their separate ways, so to say the same was done with Yamato and Carrot prob goes to show that Oda isn't done with them yet even though they're not in Chapter 1058, suffice to say. It also doesn't help that Yamato basically ends up choosing Oden's path over Luffy as if giving the impression that Luffy is irrelevant for not being Oden, with even that group drawing at the end showing Yamato smiling with the Scabbards even though she arguably knows most of them less than the Straw Hats.

I mean seriously, regardless of how people view Yamato and how Oda drew it with the best of intentions, I think it can still be understood why an image like this can be taken the wrong way with Yamato being there after all that was said and shown, and prob not in the good way of subverting expectations either.

That's true for many characters, though. Law for over a decade was more relevant than half the entire crew. My feeling is that if before the timeskip the focus was "Luffy & his crew", after the timeskip (or more specifically in the New World) it changed to "Luffy & his rivals" - and I don't think that was a planned thing, given the SN were never even meant to be, but just how Oda's interest shifted.

For the past decade, being a SH means very little in terms of how much of a main character you really are.

@Deicide I don't know how someone can even think Hancock will join the crew, so I can't argue against it. I just hope Oda does something interesting with her now that she's not a warlord. A former slave of the celestial dragons is ripe for that.

Also, I hope Bonney ages her down or something if she's going to continue to be infatuated with Luffy. It would make it less weird.

Personally, it’s kinda hard to see it that way when Yamato is shown to be forming her choices as a means to live like Oden, and choosing to walk on a path just because Oden walked on it.

If the story wanted to make it as clear as possible that Yamato’s choices are being made to help others and not deeming Luffy’s path to be suddenly more irrelevant compared to Oden’s path, then I’d think it would help to not skip over conversations, and not be left with confusing vagueness as to how Yamato can expect to go to sea in the first place going about things that way.

                                                I’m making sense, right?

Well if this is part one of her story then it does make sense that Oda is keeping it under wraps because that could very well be a part of her character arc.

All we know right now is she went from “I’m Oden, I want to go out to sea” to “I’m Oden, I want to stay in Wano.” Staying in Wano isn’t very Oden so there’s definitely something else at play there. It could be helping defend Wano or it could be something that plays into her backstory.

It’s hard to say what Oda’s plan is. Maybe there is more to see or he simply got carried away with the character. At this point it could go either way.

Well, I'll try to show my point of view.

She's an interesting character. She's full of gags and potential interactions with others. She has a tragic past that left her with a deep unresolved trauma. She's linked to themes that have not been fully explored yet, like the Celestial Dragons and slavery. She would totally follow Luffy if she could, and gained his friendship in return.

Back then, what was binding her to not join? Her title, her responsibility as Empress, and her power level.

Power level is already solved, we're in the endgame, and Luffy is already above her (I assume), while Zoro, Sanji and Jinbe are probably her equals.

When she was left behind, I weas betting on her losing her title eventually, and then saw a trail of crumbs that led ultimately to it.

So, what's left is her responsibility. But, if she loses the battle and is separated from her people, then returning to them would mean putting a target on them again. Her responsibility is reversed: she needs to stay away.

So, the chances hang on her being captured. If that happens, she's bound to confront her past, battle her trauma and fight against her old oppressors. It's the chance for a perfect character arc, flashback and all.

I'm very anxious for the next few weeks because any chapter now can reinforce or break that theory. I've been waiting over a decade for this! 😬

@Deicide I'm not particularly sure if staying away from Amazon Lily is an option that guarantees the safety of her people, especially since Marigold and Sandersonia are also wanted pirates. The Marines have no obligation to leave the island alone, with or without Hancock. It's the same issue with Wano, where the Kuja have no actual rights.

Feels like all the Kuja will need to come with her and abandon the island altogether in order to stay safe.

It’s a thing of cost and benefit.

Without Hancock, the Kuja are still criminals and a rogue nation. However, they become far less valuable targets, especially in the current world situation. Why amass another large fleet to beat low-priority targets?

It’s a bit simplistic and very convenient, sure, but Oda goes for this type of solution (the Franky Family and Galley-lah helping wreck Enies Lobby and not suffering any consequence is an example). What the story needs to show is that the Kuja are okay with Hancock’s choice.

There’s even a character in place for next empress: Marguerite, who had 2 years to get stronger (the Kuja leadership does not seem to be hereditary).

All we know right now is she went from “I’m Oden, I want to go out to sea” to “I’m Oden, I want to stay in Wano.” Staying in Wano isn’t very Oden so there’s definitely something else at play there. It could be helping defend Wano or it could be something that plays into her backstory.

Actually, thinking again about how much Yamato values Oden, his path, and his opinions, and how the encounter with Aramaki could have changed Yamato's mind in regards to Momo, I think it could possibly be turning out that Yamato cares not only to be the best Oden around, but also help Momo so that it wouldn't make Oden sad. Putting it that way, I think it's all starting to make more sense.

Really though, how could I have been so stupid not to realize it earlier. For as kind and heartfelt Yamato can be, she still ends up answering up to Oden and his philosophy at the end of the day, even going so far as to maybe only care about Momo because he's Oden's son, and care about Kinemon and the others because they were his scabbards and friends. And that Yamato going from being confident that Momo will be #1 because he has Oden's genes to seeing him struggle against an Admiral is what led her to change her mind into staying, mainly because she's suddenly afraid of seeing Momo fail, not being able to bear disgracing Oden's legacy, and making Oden sad high up above in the heavens because of his son failing to be strong too.

That's prob what 20 years of being on one island and desperately wanting to idolize an idol will do to someone: not only wanting to impersonate that idol as best as possible, but also not giving anyone else more time of the day unless they're reminded of that idol, and being motivated to do things so as to not make that idol sad, even if that idol is now dead. That's what this is all really about, isn't it?

Now I can really start to see why Oda didn't have Yamato on the crew right now, because Yamato doing things out of wanting to be the best Oden, as well as not wanting to feel bad in having Oden roll around in his boiled grave, might just possibly make her out to ultimately be a selfish character.

I can see why Oda would do that, because there's no room for selfishness like that on the crew.

Otherwise, a crewmate only making choices primarily based on what Oden would have approved of, instead of what her potential captain would have approved of, isn't exactly the most appealing outcome when it's put like that.

I don't see how her chances should depend on if she was captured or not and how the same should not apply to her sisters(do you think they will also join?). She is a former celestial dragon slave that is wanted. That should already mean she can't stay in Amazon Lily. She must go out to sea with the Kuja Pirates and confront her past. I expect she will be looking for Luffy first though.

I hope she pulls a Fisher Tiger at some point and frees slaves. If I remember correctly, she has supreme king haki. Now that it has been revealed that it can actually be a powerful weapon in battle, I hope we see her kick some celestial dragon ass! Honestly, she should totally join forces with Dragon.

Marguerite does not need to match Hancock's strength to be her sucessor. She just needs to be the most able warrior of the bunch. She can totally become that.

But if not not her, you said yourself: there's Hancock's sisters. But Marguerite has a stronger popularity with the readers and got more attention in Amazon Lily, so her becoming leader has a certain likelyhood.

Her sisters are nowhere as notorious as her. It's not them that the marines are after.

What I see happening is Hancock being captured, not her sisters. She may surrender to protect her people, or stay behind to cover their escape, or whatever. But she will be captured alone.

Once that happens, the government couldn't care less about wasting more troops just to capture her sisters.

There's a reason why Law's crew was missing for most of the New World, and even when they were present they got minor roles: they don't matter, except as background for Law. Law is the important character. Law is the one with popularity and an interesting story and cool powers.

The same logic would apply if Hancock returns to the story. Either she gets the spotlight while her crew is mostly background noise, or she comes alone.

Never mind that Law's crew has no other notable wanted heads besides Bepo's pitiful 500 bellies. They have a reason to be low-priority targets.

If you think Yamato is coming back to the story then you would have to believe there is more going on, we just don’t know the details yet.

I don't doubt that Yamato could even be using the Oden impersonation as an excuse to cover up some insecurities, reminiscent of Usopp with Sogeking. I wish it could have been deviled into a little more before Chapter 1057, but with other things going on, and Yamato seeming to be set up to at least go to Laugh Tale like Oden did, it's prob only a matter of time before we finally start to delve into the stuff Wano lacked.

We are going to get a Hancock story, not a Boa sisters story. Oda teased "Hancock will...", not "The Boa sisters will...". Her sisters are integral to her backstory, just like Nojiko was as to Nami's, and yet was nowhere near as important.

She's kinda the strongest person there, so the Kuja lose all leverage they have if she goes away.

Nami was the one with the talent for navigation and the one who decided to take the burden of freeing everyone all on herself. Nothing like Hancock and her sisters. They went through the same shit and were freed by Fisher Tiger, so hopefully they pay that back at some point.

                                                                                                        • It's HER fault they were captured, so she feels guilt over all of THEIR pain;
                                                                                                        • In captivity, SHE suffered the most by shielding her sisters as best as she could, thus taking far greater punishments than them.

You are assuming that short description way back is all that there is in their past. If that past gets fleshed out, there will be much more.
