@Deicide Vivi is much more setup as a protagonist though, since we know the freaking ruler of the world was targeting her.

And she has the dead mentor figure now, since Cobra died.

Yamato will sail with the crew as a pirate when Momo and Kinemon do, so pretty much never. You can't really even put Yamato in the same class as Vivi at this point or the whole "you better join us" kind of order that Jinbe got. He'll get a cover story and/or show up during the final war mostly likely, but it won't be as a SH. That ship has sailed (pun 100% intended).

Well I dunno about Kinemon and Momo, since they didn't seem interested in sailing out from Wano and the shogun business unless they see it as absolutely necessary, but Yamato following Oden's path might possibly be confirmation enough in her case.

          alt text

While there's a greater than 0% chance of that happening, it's still a really low probability. We'll have a better idea of where things are going if/when Yamato gets a cover story.

I mean, Yamato has said she wanted to follow Oden's path, and Oden went to Laugh Tale with the future Pirate King. I don't have good reason to assume Yamato is lying or hiding anything either, so why shouldn't I actually consider that's where Yamato's story is heading towards?

He did, but Yamato won't be doing everything that Oden did.

Heh, isn't Yamato confident about following Oden's path in any case though?

              @King-Cannon
I'm sure Vivi will be part of an awesome storyline. I even believe that we will start learning about the Void Century (something Oda teased recently) through her discovering her lineage's secrets.

But having a great storyline does not equal joining the crew.

Her storyline will be more like Momo's. She will be there with the crew, but not exactly carrying the same weight as a crewmember. Because ultimately she's not on the level of a New World pirate, and she's still doing things so she can return to her Kingdom and rule it.

And about Hancock, she's the undeveloped part of the "teased trio": "Sabo will... Vivi will... Hancock will..."

Oda teased it 3 years ago. I think it's all but confirmed those three will be front and center of next arc. But I feel people don't pay attention to the third one enough. Hancock's the one with:

              • A tragic backstory ready to be unveiled
              • Lots of humorous gags ready to be used
              • Strength in line with the crew's current power

              I believe she's the one.

If it's Hancock, I believe she leans more on the idiot side of things.

Wano predictions: There will be 5 acts; All Straw Hats will get fights, some in Act 4; Big Mom Pirates will arrive; Carrot will have her moment, but won't join; Yamato will be a Kouzuki samurai and Wano's Guardian; Shanks will visit Luffy in Act 5; Next arc is Mary Geoise.

Theoretically Big Mom and Kaido are dead… unless they just enjoy a good swim in the volcano… otherwise their fruits should be back in circulation.

An Azure Dragon would be a fit for Vivi’s hair colour… also the two countries associated with Pluton being ruled by dragons is also… something… so, why not. Would be fun to watch I’d say, also a great power up.

Nami with the soul fruit wouldn’t also be bad…

Luffy with powers of two former Yonko’s.. also quite nice. 😶

@Zhenja Pretty sure Kaido and Big Mom got blown out of the magma chamber when the volcano erupted. If not, then they really should be dead unless they are supposed to be so strong that they don't even need to breathe, all the while swimming in magma.

I hope Hancock meets Bonney and she ages her down or something. It would make her crush on Luffy not seem so weird.

My opinion is the same I had when Wano started: that arc was the last chance for anyone to join the crew. So I stick to Jinbe being the last crewmember.

We are on the final saga, the final push where everything will converge towards the ending. The crew crossed every checkpoint on their way towards Laugh Tale, both the SH and Luffy reached the maximum status they could get before the final goal that is "Pirate King".
Anyone joining now would have missed everything, making their place in the crew undeserved, not to mention they probably would never truly feel part of the crew. I mean, just look at Jinbe, a character who was meant to join at the eve of the final saga and Oda made sure we would have multiple arcs with him interacting with Luffy and the crew before that.

An already familiar character could mitigate that, but even people like Hancock and Smoker are only familiar to us as "individual characters", not as characters that have a place within the crew and have interacted with them. Say next arc is a Hancock rescue, how long it would take into the arc until she had a chance to start interacting with the crew?
Carrot is probably the only familiar character that we know more as "part of the group" than as a character alone and she would have the advantage that, if she were to appear in the next arc, she would appear at the very beginning and already at the Sunny. But unfortunately for her, Oda showed absolutely no interest in her character for the entire Wano arc, showing he had no intent to sell her to us as part of the main cast.

Vivi rejoining the crew is the only thing I can see happening, since she technically already is a SH. But honestly, I can't see what she could add to the crew in any aspect, except pander to our nostalgic side.
So I hope she comes back temporarily simply as a nod to the old times, but then leaves at the end of the arc again to do her own stuff.

Vivi will rejoin. Even if she is missed since Arabasta she still has the deepest connection and interaction with the crew. Hell she had more interaction with most of them than even Jinbe.

And she is fully back in the story... Expect some fuckery and also a stupid power up.

I think the crew is complete.

I'm not someone who believes we will get a Straw Hats vs Blackbeard straight match-up (I see allies facing some of them) so the number discrepancy isn't an issue IMO.

Hancock was designed for the endgame. Her backstory ties in with the Celestial Dragons and the World Government we are about to deal with. Her entire arc hinged on the loss of the Warlord title that just happened. And that's why she's a stronger candidate than most people still ignore.

I'm sure we will get some clues about her very soon, then we will have a clearer picture of where her story is going.

I can agree with you on that. She'll be an important end-game character.

Hancock's as set up as Vivi is.

I don't think Vivi fans need to worry. She get her spot in the ship, and she's already "nakama". But I don't think she will get the protagonist role. IMO, she will be a companion now just like she was back then.

                            The difference is:

Vivi's plot relevance is being set up on the main stage. Being compared to Luffy, Teach, and Shirahoshi is a massive deal. It's literally difficult to hype a OP character more than that.

Whereas Hancock is being set up in a similar way as (fellow ex-shichibukai) Edward Weevil; we know they're going to be important, but presumably as support characters in a larger plot.

                            --
That could also just be Oda's plan; "Have the central plot revolve around Vivi, but have the less important character Hancock be the one to actually join."

This is an entirely fair point. Vivi managing to get to the rest of the crew's level, even with a logia devil fruit, seems like a long-shot to me.
However, there must be something about her that poses a very big threat to the World Government.

Hancock has a much better-suited level of strength.

No, I feel Vivi's story will be multi-arc and more relevant to the endgame, while Hancock's story will have more personal exploration in an earlier arc.

As for her having as much attention as Weevil so far... If she's going to be explored in an earlier arc, it makes sense to return to her last, as the arc starts.

Also notice that even in Ch 956 the Warlords were covered in order: Buggy, Mihawk, Weevil and Hancock. It seems like it will be the same order again.

To make it a roller coaster of expectations most likely.

It reminds me of when I saw people say they believed Pudding was nice, to feeling fooled Pudding was evil, to have that turned on its head by then having it revealed that Pudding basically goes through insecure emotional mood swings instead of just being pure evil.

So in a similar way, for all I know, Oda could be have been building up Yamato joining to build up one expectation, to feeling fooled by Yamato said she'd stay on a Wano tour, to possibly having that turned on its head too, because again, roller coasters can be pretty fun for Oda, including playing them with expectations. lol

Speak for yourself. Lol He never fooled me.

Same here. Though I considered the possibility of Yamoto sailing with the Strawhats (like Johnny and Yosaku or Kinnemon and Momo before her) very likely.

That was actually the part where I actually started getting doubts again after I was sold on the "at least a team up" aspect. Unlike any other Strawhat, Yamato has been forcing herself on the crew completely. One might argue that Robin also invited herself but she at least was polite enough to ask Luffy and then explain the reasoning that she has nowhere else to go.

Yamato on the other hand has declared across several occations, like when confronting Kaido that she will join Luffy. No Strawhat Pirate was that adamant about joining before they actually became a member of the crew. Heck, almost everybody refused it in one way or the other. Even Brook who said "yes" at first paddled back on that because of the issue with his shadow.

Also my memory is a bit iffy on that matter. But Luffy actually ever invite her to literally become a part of her crew? I'm sure that he told her to go out and see the world when this entire "you're free" thing came up. But I don't remember if he invited her or not.

Luffy seemed pissed off when Yamato said he expected Luffy to let him in the ship. And Luffy never said anything close to see the world. He just offered to take off his cuffs, and a little later did.

That just happened now during the farewell scene. I was talking about before. Also that's something completely different from the usual "become a part of my crew" moment, when he's pretty adamant about getting a new crew member. Not to mention that he's issuing the invitation to three people at the same time.

That's more a "tag along" kind of thing, which is not new for the Strawhats. We already had Johnny, Yosaku, Law, Kinnemon, Momo, Camie, Pappug, Pedro, Pekoms and Carrot sail with the Strawhats. Yet Vin Diesel would not consider any guys of these Family!

I don’t think that counts against Yamato though, since she did respect Jinbe mentioning it being the captain’s decision.

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

I was reading along with interest in waiting for Yamato’s greater purpose to be focused on more, but Wano’s anticlimactic end pretty much put that on pause for now. I have to figure Yamato will be on Laugh Take with Luffy though, since Yamato wants to follow Oden’s path and Oden was on Laugh Tale with the previous Pirate King after all, in addition to wanting to open the borders.

I was never sold on Yamato until he literally told the crew he would travel with them then I completely fell for it

Yamato actually fits with the sort of pattern of the women of the crew approaching Luffy instead of the other way around, Nami suggesting she team up with Nami in Orange Town and Robin inviting herself onto the ship with the demand that Luffy take responsibility for saving her even though she was fine with dying in the tomb.

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

Nami suggested a co-operation to take advantage of Luffy's strong muscle when taking on Buggy. She had no intention of joining his crew. Also the panel you just posted has her say "no way!" to Luffy's invitation to become this crewmate. She suggested a cooparation, she didn't ask to join the crew. That proposition first came from Luffy.

Also the Usopp and Robin parts don't belong in here. Both are from a time when they considered leaving the crew. But they already were full fledged Strawhat Pirates by then.

Of course it does. Many people approach Luffy and ask him for co-operation respectively help in achieving their goal. Heck, Old Man spoil asked Luffy to help when he saw the Strawhat crew's strenght in Thriller Bark. Asking for help/co-operation is not the same as requesting to set sail on Luffy's ship. Yamato did exactly that. Nami did not.

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

                                                                alt text

Nami suggested a co-operation to take advantage of Luffy's strong muscle when taking on Buggy. She had no intention of joining his crew. Also the panel you just posted has her say "no way!" to Luffy's invitation to become this crewmate. She suggested a cooparation, she didn't ask to join the crew. That proposition first came from Luffy.

Also the Usopp and Robin parts don't belong in here. Both are from a time when they considered leaving the crew. But they already were full fledged Strawhat Pirates by then.

With all due respect, it still doesn’t change how Nami approached Luffy first, and that Usopp and Robin refused/opposed Luffy at some point in their lives in regards to the crew.

Of course it does. Many people approach Luffy and ask him for co-operation respectively help in achieving their goal.

Yeah, I'd agree that's true, in wanting to gain more freedom and Luffy helping achieve that from that start in removing Yamato's cuffs, free to go whenever she wants, including to Laugh Tale.

Right. But Yamato went one step further by actually wanting to board Luffy's ship. The only other person ever to ask that was Robin and as stated before, it was more of a polite request after everything that transpired during the climax of Arabasta. In comparison Yamato was a lot more strong in expressing that wish before we even reached the climax of the story.

That felt always a bit weird. Yes, people said that she needs and will bond with Luffy. And yes, that even happened. They definitely bonded. But the desire to set sail with Luffy came before the bond already. I would even say, she wanted to set sail with Luffy before she even met him based on how Ace spoke about his little brother and whatever little news she might have gotten about Luffy's exploits. That why Yamato expressing the desire to join Luffy before actually really have bonded with him felt lesser organic and a weak form of bond.

Yes, the way they are now they definitely formed a bond that feels genuinely organic. But that's different from when they first met. And while Robin and Luffy didn't really have a bond that was build on friendship and trust at the epilogue of Arabasta, they at least went through something that made their relation completely different from when they met the first time in Whiskey Peak.

I honestly found that refreshing, since most people reject Luffy as soon as he brings up being a pirate to them, so I felt it was refreshing to see it be the other way around in someone who's actually excited for once at the idea of joining him, only to still refuse him anyway, but still have it be open to take up the offer to be a pirate with him at any time.

Oh it definitely was refreshing, no argument there. But was also why it never felt to me like Yamato would be a fullfledged Strawhat pirate, whether she tags along or not.

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

Oh it definitely was refreshing, no argument there. But was also why it never felt to me like Yamato would be a fullfledged Strawhat pirate, whether she tags along or not.

Unlike any other Strawhat, Yamato has been forcing herself on the crew completely. One might argue that Robin also invited herself but she at least was polite enough to ask Luffy and then explain the reasoning that she has nowhere else to go.

No Strawhat Pirate was that adamant about joining before they actually became a member of the crew. Heck, almost everybody refused it in one way or the other. Even Brook who said "yes" at first paddled back on that because of the issue with his shadow.

I'm sure that he told her to go out and see the world when this entire "you're free" thing came up. But I don't remember if he invited her or not.

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

                                                                          alt text

Well, I'd still see Yamato as part of crew in any case she liked spending time with them just as much as they liked spending time with her. I wouldn't like anything trivial like time get in the way of that either for me.

Saying "I consider X character part of the crew" is not an argument because if there's any value to it, then literally anybody else here on the forum can make the same claim and replace Yamato with any character they deem worthy. Oda decides who's part of the crew. Not the fandom. Yamato is not. And so isn't Carrot (for now).

That said, it's still a basic requirement for the readers themselves that if a character were to join the crew on a permanent basis, that character needs to be familar with the crew on some level.

People say its not really needed, but it is. Luffy is the most important factor of course, but with a crew at his size and how often than not they tend to manage Luffy instead of the other way around, they have a say in the matter too.

Well, I'd still see Yamato as part of crew in any case she liked spending time with them just as much as they liked spending time with her. I wouldn't like anything trivial like time get in the way of that either for me.

Many people liked spending time with the Strawhats and vice versa. That does not make them part of the crew.

Oh, I wasn't saying that it's not an important factor. Quite the contrary. I agree that it is an essential part to interact with the as many crewmembers as possible as the chemistry between characters and how the bond.

What I was disagreeing with is the "I'd still see Yamato as part of crew in any case she liked spending time with them" statement as this is clearly now how it works. It's super subjective and does not reflect what Oda has clearly decided about who the main cast is. If we allow this as a valid requirment to define a Strawhat Pirate crewmate then I can also say, that I see Carrot as part of the crew because she liked spending time with them. And I can top this off by saying that Carrot even sailed with the Strawhats.

But it doesn't end there. Someone else could say "I see Law as part of the crew because he didn't mind spending time with them and also sailed with them. Even longer than Carrot did". But wait, it doesn't end here either, one might say the same thing about Momo and Kinnemon in which case this becomes a dick measuring contest, which creates a lot more Strawhat Pirates than there actually are.

It's ok to like a character and to want them to be part of the crew. But saying "I consider X character to be part of the crew" ultimately comes down to being nothing else but headcanon.

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

                                                                              alt text

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

Well, I'd still see Yamato as part of crew in any case she liked spending time with them just as much as they liked spending time with her. I wouldn't like anything trivial like time get in the way of that either for me.

Many people liked spending time with the Strawhats and vice versa. That does not make them part of the crew.

Correct. Ultimately Oda is the one to decide who joins the crew and who doesn't. Its commonly known however, that interaction with the crew, negative of positive, is a common known requirement. So it goes hand in hand really.

As I said, I never said that it doesn't go hand in hand. 😉

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

Well, I'd still see Yamato as part of crew in any case she liked spending time with them just as much as they liked spending time with her. I wouldn't like anything trivial like time get in the way of that either for me.

Many people liked spending time with the Strawhats and vice versa. That does not make them part of the crew.

I wasn’t saying it as it being the only valid requirement to define a Straw Hat. lol

Well, I'd still see Yamato as part of crew in any case she liked spending time with them just as much as they liked spending time with her. I wouldn't like anything trivial like time get in the way of that either for me.

Many people liked spending time with the Strawhats and vice versa. That does not make them part of the crew.

Yep, I wasn’t saying it as the only deciding factor or that the reader’s choice is above Oda’a or anything like that. I was just speaking from a personal level of being willing to see crewmates as friends even if they hadn’t known Luffy for as long as Zoro has, and that friendship isn’t just based on time. Am I making sense?

Her refusal also goes along with previous people refusing Luffy in some way, or opposing him in some way in regards to the crew, amusingly.

Correct. Ultimately Oda is the one to decide who joins the crew and who doesn't. Its commonly known however, that interaction with the crew, negative of positive, is a common known requirement. So it goes hand in hand really.

Yep, and that after Yamato has her time to tour Wano and gather her thoughts, then I’d be willing to see the possibility of her coming back some time before Laugh Tale, and have more interaction like people wanted.

With the cliffhanger from this week, I suspect the next few chapters will be letting us know what happened at the Reverie from Sabo's perspective (including revealing who really killed Cobra) and the reveal at the end will be that Vivi is with Sabo. But the reason Sabo hasn't gone back to the Revolutionaries is that he's actually going to see Luffy (using the vivre card he made of him in Dressrosa) and taking Vivi with him (maybe at her request, we'll have to see).

Given Sabo is Luffy and Ace's brother (and Vivi is one of the few cahracter to actually meet Ace) I reckon she would trust him and potentially reveal her connection to the Straw Hats to him.

I feel like whenever it happens Oda would try to build the drama and anticipation around it.
The context that comes to my mind of a Sabo escort to where the SH's are I feel would feel kinda hasty because it would probably be focused on what the situation with Cobra is whereas think the mood that you want the reunion to have is genuine elation that calls back to the farewell.

But yeah if Oda just wants to get on with it he could just make it happen with Sabo like that for sure.

You think so. Jinbe was specifically asked by Luffy, and simply postponed to take care of a specific and finite task, which then lead him on the path of Luffy anyway.

Yamato, Kinemon and Momo all fall under the Vivi/Shirahoshi category.

Bonney was a far-fetched theory of mine after Shabondy and Akainu´s words after the war, but now that her relationship with Kuma was revealed and Kuma was already saved, it became more than unlikely.
