The real fruit have been revealed to us. But remember, nobody there on Wano heard what Gorosei said about Luffy's DF. Luffy himself did not understand what happened, and thus named the new ability Gear 5. So I wonder, how is the truth going to get revealed to the actors in the story. Maybe Kaido does know something about it, for something to come out of his mouth? Maybe this is where Whoswho is gonna do his part, at some point in future.

Chopper cured Covid Queen. That's something. Ussop..uh..defeated Bao Huang…and...uh...
wait...
Ussop literally defeated 0 people this arc aside from her. Not even fodder

Ironically it's Nika that got him into prison, but it's also Nika which helped him keep some of his sanity while in prison too.

Pains me to say that there hasn't been a great Usopp arc since Dressrosa, and he wasn't even defeating many enemies in that arc either.
I REALLY hope that I'm not constantly reminded how worthless Chopper and the others are for not being like Zoro or Sanji from here on out.
There's some real irony here given all the slander Sanji received over the years. The Strawhats, especially someone like Usopp who's part of the OGs from East Blue, always eventually get their due. Not sure about Chopper, but Usopp obviously has Elbaf to look forward to.
gripes for 1/3 of this arc is that most of the SHs got the shaft. it's a pivotal fight with a yonko most didn't fight or showed that their growth in the 2 year time skip was lacking. Or their growth since fishman island was meh compared to the first half of grand line. Did Ussop even do anythign with his awakened haki yet?
crazy we didn’t see an Usopp reaction to Nika. Just an acknowledgement of an active haki awareness, or lack there of like Nami/Tama don’t have. But nope, got neither.

I always remember the Arlong Park chapter where Luffy basically lays out what the other members can do that he can't do, and that the others should focus on that the most to the max. Too bad that got lost on me at Wano with some of the members even now though.

Outside of Usopp I guess, everyone did find a way to pull their weight. Even Chopper at least got to show his doctor skills.

Am I on copium still hoping for usopp to get a good moment this arc?
First arc with the full crew in years… this can't be it right?
And before people say well usopp turned the tide of battles with Tama I'm aware just isn't enough for me + all that stuff really doesn't come off that great given the entire framing has always been non of it will matter if kaido doesn't get beaten which kinda makes stakes around the armies fighting just feel very removed from it all.
Usopp will have a sniper moment, I believe.
And it's possible that Usopp will have something else to say again regarding this "death theme" prevalent in Wano.
Outside of Usopp I guess, everyone did find a way to pull their weight. Even Chopper at least got to show his doctor skills.
Dunno, even with his doctor skills as impressive as they are fell kinda flat to me in the end for some reason.
"I'll just let him discover it on his own, lol"
Well, Luffy did make it clear to Raleigh that he didn't want him to spoil anything about his adventure when Usopp asked.
Chapter 1044 is prob meant to be the start of how Devil Fruit categorization can only be so neat until a monkey wrench is thrown in there and throws everything into a mess, further questioning what makes one fruit different from another. Definitely might be set up for Vegapunk and explain his findings.
So has Luffy's love of niku been a constant foreshadowing of nika all along?

Zunesha will probably reveal things. It has not come here for nothing
Might as well post it here:
After reading this chapter for 4 times and contemplating a long time I have finally been able to set my mind at ease, collect my thoughts and for some reason in this spoiler thread decided to be probably one of the last people to share my thoughts. Not just about this chapter but the entire ordeal in general. Something I haven't done here in ages. So for anyone giving two rats arses about it here they are:
Wano is the longest arc in One Piece and it still has I believe quite a few chapters before it wraps up and I think there is a very significant reason for it. Well there are actually many.
There seems to be a clash of minds, thoughts and opinions throughout the community. My mind was clashing with itself as well, but after rereading the chapter several times and going back in time to think and have a look at the story as a whole it is starting to come together for me.
And as it does, I just got this feeling of "liberation" no pun intended.
It was like I was in darkness but now I see the light. No pun intended as well…Luffy being Joy Boy, being the Sun God Nika is in my opinion, Oda connecting the dots, starting to fill in an important piece of what is the giant one piece puzzle and most importantly setting up the stage for what is about to happen / come.
And the main focus Oda wants to bring across imo is that in this imperfect world of One Piece is that people are living, in a world full of Racial differences, supression, rule of elites, cenzorship and general hurt of the people who are lacking the power to defend themselves or carry out their own WILL this is a moment when the Sun will rise and the dawn will come and their wills will be carried out through a certain individual. One Piece started with a chapter called the Romance Dawn. This was no coincidence. The crew we have been following through all these years has a symbol of a straw hat, which is no coincidence. Their ship was first to be Merry and was to tell of the Merry old journey the SHs would take.
There is a song out there known to the general fans of stories…. It is called The Merry old Land of OZ and its lyrics go:_You are out of the woods
You are out of the dark
You are out of the night
Step into the sun, step into the light
Keep straight ahead, for the most glorious place
On the face of the earth or the sky
Hold onto your breath
Hold onto your heart
Hold onto your hope
March up to the gate and bid it openthe middle of the song then tells about a spot on earth where people are not to tall, too young and where they dont compare and dont complain
The song finishes with
HA, HO HO HO, that's how we laugh all day in the land of OZ.It is a song from Wizard of Oz and it might not have any relevance to the entire thing and it may be Oda doesn't give two rats about it or doesn't know it….or maybe he does... I thought it is interesting and so I brought it up.
Moving on with my thought. So they had a ship called Merry... but as their Merry journey started unknowingly shifting from a random adventure to a "mission" they left the Merry and got a ship called the Sunny. Specifically Thousand Sunny. Coincidence that in the Hindu Script: Bhgavad Gita wrote Chapter 11, Verse 12 there was a saying: If a thousand suns were to blaze forth together in the sky, they would not match the splendor of that great form.
Perhaps… their ship being called the Sunny after Merry is a coincidence? I do not think so..
And just as the ship would set sail in the east and travel to the west, so would the sun.... and here we come to this chapter.
We have just witnessed the awakening of the Nika .... the sun god...in other words we have just witnessed the awakening of a Sun/Dawn and where did we get that? In the land of the Sun "Japan/Wano" however , take a note how until this moment Wano was more or less contected just to the moon... or was it? They are waiting for the dawn....and remember that the moon only reflects the light of the Sun... And in the kozuki crest there is... and then there are Toki's words: "You are the Moon...unaware of the Dawn..."
So yes…_ Is it a coincidence we see the Sun that a captain of the Sunny is the Sun God? Is it a coincidence that his awakening and Dawn it bring would be happening in Wano? Is it mere chance that the people of Wano were treated as Slaves and are now to be liberatad by the guy whose pure purpose is to do exactly that.
Shandorians believed that the spirits of the dead are caught in the trees…
We have been hinted at the importance of these giant trees in OP for long time. Eve.... Adam.... and of course Fruits usually come and fall from the trees.... If the trees possess spirits....then I guess so would the fruits and if there is a garden....there is a forbidden fruit... and if there is a forbidden fruit...there is the devil... and thus Devil Fruits with the spirits of the dead make sense.
As does the fact that even the smiles fruits are in a shape of an apple...Oda playing symbolism to the bone.
And so does the inherited Will.
Let us go back to the Drum island to Choppers "father" and his famous words: When do you think people die? When they are shot through the heart by the bullet of a pistol? No. When they are ravaged by an incurable disease? No When he eats a poisonous mushroom soup? No. They die when they are forgotten!
But Blackbeared tell us on Jaya... People's dream never die!
But Roger Tells us... I am not going to die partner!
And there is a common theme in One Piece. Those who die... and know their will be carried on... die with a smile...
Oden... Roger... Saul...Ace...And there he is...the Sun God Nika... and his trademark... the smile...
And here is Kaidou people have already mentioned how "King, the Lunarian...asked him if he is the Joy Boy and that the very name Kaidou could mean that"...interesting... as is interesting that Kaidou could also mean a road...an important road from the Meiji period...road towards what? Or there is even the Kai D Ou option...Kai = Ocean, Ou = King....
Joy Boy -> has to go through Kaidou (road) -> in his journey to become Ruller of the Seas...aka Pirate King. Maybe we are stretching things a bit...No pun intended again...
But are we?
Kaidou...is sad, Kaidou drinks away his sadness with Sake....Kaidou goes through a lot of trouble to get the Yamato a Mythical Zoan fruit which is supposed to be a Guardian Diety of Wanno...
Why? And Zoans we learn have a will of their own... they effect the user/host in some way... If Yamato is given a Guardian of Wano DF what is supposed to happen next?
And Kaidou goes from saying Winner need to rationalizations in one chapter to I am sorry for winning like that in the next one....Is that so? Or is there more? Is there a whole lot more? Are the "Slaves" to be freed here really because Kaidou just....operates that way? Why is he seeking a glorious death? Why does he say that Death completes a person? And there is a Festival in Elbaf for Death and Rebirth of the Sun... interesting...
And then there is Big Mom with her sad story and her inherited will and control of the souls...but then a part of her soul...gets free indicating the strength of free will perhaps? We are literally being bombarded with symbolism and these different ideas, ideals, prophecies and goals.... but to what end... what does it all mean, where is it all leading. Are things above just a coincidence. __**_I think not and I think, we are about to see how the Sun will rise in the East…
After a long long thought and debate with myself I have come to conclusion that I am excited about the next chapter, excited about learning about Kaidou…excited to see how Oda wants to tell his story... It may be a shounen, but I believe it carries a much grander message and overarching story behind all of it.
To anyone reading through this giant wall of text. You are brave, a brave warrior of the seas indeed...maybe even Usopp..._**__
that was a fun read. Exactly what I would expect from a passionate fan. You brought up some great points. Maybe the reason Kaidou wants to die is to awaken his fruit lmao can you imagine if that was his reason all along? Haha
Personally I think people are really overthinking it. Nothing prior to Luffy's Awakening has changed. Dude has insane willpower and a DF that inherently gives him an advantage against blunt attacks. You really don't need to go all "Oh, he's actually a Zoan, that explains things" about it. You could already use the exact same reasoning for his endurance given that he was a man with a rubber body. The story only highlighted the endurance of Zoan users because of them not having normal human bodies while in hybrid form. Likewise, Luffy's body wasn't normal from the start, as some have noted it had more in common with a Zoan's hybrid form than most Paramecia users. The reclassification of his DF is not really relevant as far as his past feats go.
The only thing I would say however is that you could argue the reveal of him being a Zoan user mattered in this exact moment, in that it helps to better swallow him getting back up after seemingly being killed because the one thing we know about Zoan Awakenings is that the users recover quickly.
I agree with you that there is a lot of overthinking. In the same time, we cannot make as if there was no change. Thinking like before the awakening it was a paramecia and just now he has become a Zoan is another stretch unless Oda also wants to throw away the 3 fruits categories he has established. That is also a possibility but it would be more simple if he had been a Zoan all along
The 3 fruit categories have all been explained in the manga by Oda through different characters and we can assume these characters knew the basics of how fruits work from common knowledge. If you go and ask Spandam if there is something like Special Paramecia, he would say "No, there are only 3 categories". So Oda could bring more light into what DF are and how they are more then just fruit-based power-ups when we meet Vegapunk.
It's like in Naruto when you learn there are 4 element styles ninja art, then they introduce hybrid styles, then they introduced merged styles, then they introduced animal styles and so on …

I think a key difference is that devil fruits aren't like magic where you have to go to some special school or temple to get power. Relegating the power to a food means anyone is able to get one and eat one without necessarily having to have special skills one has to train at for years. I think it's also at that that anyone can act like an expert on the fruit and one can never be too sure if they're right or wrong either.

Comparisson with Naruto was made for understanding that the author can change the aspects of the story that are presented as "common knowledge/basic lore" through characters POV that could not be aware of the full extension of that aspect.
Naruto still feels like the closest comparison point, putting quality aside.
Everything I would like to say has been said already. I personally like the fact we finally got to the awakening fruit, I don't mind at all he managed to get there after he nearly died, I'm not a super mega fan of the design, but it's ok and I'll learn to like it. I just don't understand why all of this couldn't be achieved with the Gomu Gomu fruit? It would have been perfect, we could have gotten to the exact same place without creating issues and doubts in terms of story-telling and what has been foreshadow and what not, etc.
And I read the full explanation from Greg and others but still to me it's not a reasonable explanation for a lot of things that happened and didn't happen in the last 20 years. And it doesn't sit well with how the Gomu Gomu has always been described as a "normal" devil fruit by Oda, because it was fun to tell the story of a "normal" person achieving extraordinary things.
On a separate note, I wonder what happened with Zoro as I we see his sword abandoned in the first panel of the chapter.
Many posters have said that at the end of the day, “Luffy is still Luffy”, but reading the official translation excacerbates why I can’t quite get behind that idea. Not fully.
While Luffy has always been prone to goofiness, even in serious battles, this constant, involuntary laughing feels completely unprecedented. And it really does seem involuntary – its not simply that Luffy is enjoying his new powers, because he states right off the bat after recovering, before doing anything, that “for some reason, I’m having fun” – his current mood surprises even him. And it really is in marked contrast to how Luffy acted at the climax of prior high-stakes battles; he might do some silly techniques earlier on, but by the time Crocodile/Lucchi/Doflamingo need to go down Luffy is deadly serious. Indeed, that’s also how Luffy was acting just before Kaidou clonked him unconscious yet again. Yet now we have the inverse progression, which manifests abruptly and is tied into Luffy now also looking more than Nika, suddenly feeling more than Nika/Joyboy according to the one person who knew him, while we’re getting exposition on how Luffys true DF type has a “Will”, just as Luffy has his inexplicable recovery/transformation…
Even if Luffy was acting like he does now just because he was happy with his powers or because the DF makes him feel good, the net result is still that Luffys behavior changes as a result of his DF, in a manner that explicitly evokes the figure the DF is based on.
By his Nika DF awakening, Luffy is becoming more Nika.
It’s not a radical departure from Luffys normal personality, its not literally Nikas ghost possessing him, but it’s a hop and a skip away from it. And again, it all comes back to the dang fruit.
And on that note, the lack of establishment for what Nika/Joyboy means or how relevant they are to the current story can’t help but undercut the impact of this whole reveal.
I know Luffy has now become something Kaidou knew about, but I don’t really get any catharsis from the grand re-emergence of Luffy as “Nika the Joyboy, mythical liberator of the oppressed!” because I don’t have any sense that the OP world at large cares about it, except King, a random unseen guard, and an ancient elephant who stumbled onstage at the last minute seemingly just to get quickly re-established as JoyBoys friend so it could vouch for JoyBoy being back.
If Luffy had to manifest as the slave-liberating Sun God in such an extremely literal sense, it’d have been neat if I knew at least Jinbe of the sun pirates cared about it or something.
Of course making Nika more well-established earlier on could have “given away the puzzle”, but Oda is dealing with very plain and obvious set-up and payoffs most of the time, he went to great lengths to hammer home an incoming twist regarding Luffys DF at the last minute anyway, and…ultimately I don’t care about “the puzzle”. I don’t want the story to try and “outsmart me” just because, if something surprising happens I want to go “Of course! That is a totally satisfying resolution” not “Huh? I guess that makes sense”
Dunno, even with her doctor skills as impressive as they are fell kinda flat to me in the end for some reason.
Well, we're talking about other members of the crew doing stuff Luffy is not capable of doing. Whether or not it was personally satisfying to you, Chopper is the only Strawhat capable of doing what he did is the point I'm making.

We've already had a bunch of outliers/oddities in the past (Katakuri, Tamago, etc.), on top of it already being established that Mythical Zoans already sort of play by their own rules, so I can't pretend as if Luffy is the first ever outlier to exist in this series.
And it doesn't sit well with how the Gomu Gomu has always been described as a "normal" devil fruit by Oda, because it was fun to tell the story of a "normal" person achieving extraordinary things.
When did he say that? I've seen people mention this, or that he called the fruit "useless" or "weak", but the only thing I recall is him saying he picked the power because of how ridiculous it is:
https://onepiece.fandom.com/wiki/SBS_Volume_65
In the ONE PIECE of these days, all kinds of strong ability users whom even Luffy can't compete with have been appearing, one after the other. In general manga and anime, I feel that the protagonist is established to be the strongest of all, but why did you decide to turn Luffy into a pretty weak-looking rubber Devil Fruit user? P.N. Do your best Japan
O: Ahaha, that is true. It must seem like a mystery when you consider all the other strong and cool abilities. The answer is simple. I have picked the most ridiculous ability. If the protagonist were the typical strong guy, I doubt I could continue on with this for long. No matter how serious the story gets, Luffy is there to stretch and inflate. He always give me a chance to fool around. That's the kind of manga I wanted to write.
Well, we're talking about other members of the crew doing stuff Luffy is not capable of doing. Whether or not it was personally satisfying to you, Chopper is the only Strawhat capable of doing what he did is the point I'm making.
And leads in to my main point, that why bother have Chopper as powered-up fighter in the first place if his place is in the doctor's office doing things that Luffy isn't doing out on the battlefield?

Weird question, the Strawhats is a small crew who should all be capable of defending themselves on some level, and the meta reason is that it's still a shounen series at the end of the day. I hope and ultimately believe Chopper will continue to improve, but I'm not gonna dunk on him just because he couldn't beat top tiers like Queen or Perospero, that's just silly.

Did I eat the Hito Hito no Mi model Daz ?
It kind of diminished the Katakuri's fight for me. Oh luffy won because he was capable of enduring hits, he's a tanker who got there by hard work. The deciding factor was his endurance! Oh wait, no ..that's part of his zoan ability…so uh, Katakuri would have won but lost because he unironically had the lesser fruit despite the entire fight framing it as if he had the better one.
Most luffy opponents have commented several times why the light in his eyes won’t go out. Starting from the early fights. Yes Luffy has his own determination and strong will to live. Coupled with the power of Zoan, it took him to extreme levels. Some readers laugh at Luffy calling it plot armor, DF protagonist model. All I’m saying is it makes sense now. How many times did he come back against Crocodile? Won’t go down against Lucci when he should have, all the feats in ID + Marineford. His ability to last or keep coming back makes ID minotaurus looks like kindergarten.
Katakuri DF was superior to luffy at that time because it was awakened and probably still superior. Luffy’s awakened DF is most ridiculous not about power but about what can be done with it. The flexibility. And yes Luffy outlast Katakuri in that fight. That’s a fact.

Well with the established foreshadowing of you being critical of the current storytelling, it only makes sense that You have been Me all along! This is a meaningless curio though, don't worry about it

He is already strong enough to go head to head with the likes of Hawkins/Shinuchi or probably even Tobiroppo. My personal favourite scenario is him working together with Usopp in fights, providing Usopp with various drug projectiles and carrying him to safe spots while also guarding his back when he is shooting. They would make a great pair.

I was biding my time until I could be revealed as the Born-Grumpy Hidden Moon Critic you just didn't know it, when I said "Cool Chapter" it was actually hidden code for "Thematically Sloppy grumble grumble"

Well, weird way of how Chopper was Shōwa asked to me then.
I think suneisha is in for a huge surprise, wait until he meets Luffy and starts calling him Joy Boy, "No I am Luffy the man who will become the pirate king". Luffy will always be Luffy I will bet anything on that.

By his Nika DF awakening, Luffy is becoming more Nika.
And Marco becomes more phoenix when he becomes a phoenix. The fact that DFs transform your body is the basic of the power system. But that's it.
Only the heartbeat is "more Nika", aka the Drums of Liberation which Zunesha heard. There is no "more Nika" in regards to 'mind' and 'will' and 'behavior'. What we're seeing is Luffy intoxicated by the vibration and music echoing inside his rubber body, and this happiness is like when Luffy ate mushrooms in Amazon Lily, even the same laughter. That's being affected by the physicality of something… like it happens with people. It's him.

You mean Marco, the side character, who we didn't follow closely for 1044 chapters on his way to fulfill his dreams?
It's not just it, because zoans can be combined with objects. Because they have a will inside, or an instinct, or whatever is applicable. Choppy's fruit made him more intelligent than most humans, let alone reindeers. There's no way of knowing if Marco wouldn't have been a more ruthless person if he wasn't inhabited by heal bird.
Luffy just seems to me like he's on drugs right now.
This chapter gave me chills. A twist even grander than Ace being revealed to be his son and Blackbeard's body having a special composition. I loved it. After the last chapter, I expected the Gomu Gomu no Mi to be the Nika Fruit but I did not expect it to be a Mythical Zoan of the Human Human sub-category. What a curious development that was unexpected yet planned seemingly from chapter 1.
The symbolism of drums to support the theme of liberation was such a fascinating revelation. Many cultures around the world incorporate drums into their tradition and even associate drums with the Gods and Deities that encapsulate their history. I follow Hinduism and also believe in spirituality. I practice meditation daily and I have been taught that when you can hear your inner drum sounding within your meditative state, you have reached a point of liberation and progressed on the path of enlightenment. A drum beat can be interpreted as the echo of the soul. So seeing drums used as the precursor for the Warrior of Lights awakening, it hits a personal level of relevance for me.
In conjunction with Luffy reawakening as the Warrior of Liberation, I love how Oda incorporated Hiyori's story who also reawakened as herself within this chapter. Behind the masks she wore, she desperately tried to play the role of Komurasaki in the past but within this moment, all her pain and suffering surfaced within the words she exchanged with Orochi. Hiyori called out Orochi for the pathetic individual he is and boldly and proudly declared herself as Kozuki Hiyori. A scene reminiscent of Momonosuke’s expression of who he is to Kaido. Not once has Hiyori forgotten who she is and where she came from. Along with expressing that the Kozuki clan always keeps their promise, Hiyori also mentions the Dawn is sure to come. Words that express the belief the Kozuki clan held in Joy Boy and the person who would arrive in the future to complete what was unfinished.

I think you missed the point of the first line, which is exposing the tautology of saying that the Nika fruit makes Luffy more Nika. Just like the rubber fruit makes Luffy more rubber. Or the phoenix fruit makes Marco more phoenix. Or the magma fruit makes Akainu more magma. It's the premise itself of DFs.

That's a different argument than Daz' – and it's a more interesting point. "There's no way to know", so we don't need to assume anything right now. For this chapter, what we know is that Luffy after awakening is still the same Luffy we've followed for the entire series.
About the topic on a meta level, it has always been a thing that Oda crafts characters by matching powers and personality, and that goes beyond Zoans and their 'wills'. All Paramecia and Logia are like that too. Even Luffy was signified by rubber as a symbol of his resilience and the willpower to bounce back.
@Daz:
The fight is exhilarating for Luffy, which is why he's euphoric. Not out of character considering the circumstances (near-death experience, new-found power).

I mean there's a big difference between superpowers and influence on your personality on the topic of your identity.

Well he is a lot more playful about the fight than usual. Him and Kaido were talking the fun they were having while usually Luffy is a lot more angry dealing with the final boss. And the describing the fruit as a liberation fruit does put into question Luffy propencity to liberate people.

That's vary vague word association. You can also make it about his moral flexibility, his inflated sense of ego or other vague phrase s as long as you can tangentially use a noun or adjective of flexibility.
Is there a chapter next week? Its usually in the OP and i don't see anything on the first page.

16 chars Yes there is.
So this is very much a chapter that's meant to follow directly from Fish-Man Island, isn't it?

When it comes to "will" of the devil fruits, I don't think Luffy is being brainwashed by it, or any other character for that matter. As I've been pointing out before, Luffy's blissful state during the Awakening is due to the physicality of his powers – the vibration of the heartbeat and the music it produces.

Luffy being more playful during the fight was, in itself, the steps towards the awakening (even the onomatopeia had the drum sound, chapter 1036), which answers the crowd who thinks the awakening was merely handed to Luffy. (Not to mention how Luffy was already bending the limits of the unawakened fruit to its awakened potential with his Gears.)
Anyway, Luffy is a perfect match for the Nika fruit indeed. That's thematic layering for the character design – the craft of writing is to make things rhyme. Which doesn't mean the inner mechanics of the story is brainwashing. But I do bet that the Nika fruit chose Luffy.

It's not just a vague word association. There are dialogues in the manga that goes like that, and it's a perfectly fitting analogy for character design.
Btw, even without the "will" of the fruit, it comes to mind that your physical attributes will influence your experience in life and how you feel about stuff, thus molding who you are. If your body is "ice", maybe you'll be a chill person. If your body is rubber, maybe you'll be more mentally resilient and fearless. And this is a story, which inherently functions on a metaphorical level.
Late spoilers eh?
I saw Redon posted a possible spoiler on twitter?

If it was fire it would be his passion. If it was flower it would be about having a hand to give to all his friends. If it was Magnets it would be his magnetic personality. sugar fruit would be his childlike nature. Wathever it would there would some level of vagueries that be used to make it fit. Aside a few ultra specific ones.
Is it even sure the bouncing back expression exist in the same form in japenese that references the property of some objects to bouncing.

I mean I'm not sure why the ability to produce and turn to ice would make you a more laid back person of a person. Like Aokiji seemed to have become "laid back" as a result of Ohara, not just he has that fruit so he is that. And ace had a bad temper long before eating his fruit. And the light fruit doesnt make Kizaru hyperactive or bright or wathever is the association for it.

Yes, if the MC's powers were other things, there would be other associations. But we're not discussing "ifs", but what it is, what's written. Oda likes to emphasize Luffy's qualities in what Oda perceives as connotations for rubber – resilience, bouncing back, freedom, ridiculousness, etc.

And Luffy was already strong-willed and joyful before eating the Gomu Gomu – it's all the author's hands making thematic fits. But you could also think about the effects of powers on personality, why not? Especially when it becomes your own body, your tissues and organs and even the nervous system. Be mindful that your life experiences will be all around these powers, and life molds the psyche.
