      Instant backstory just add Ace.

Title: ''Yamato's Past - The Man Who Sought the Emperor of the Sea''
      Chapters Covered: rest of 998-999
      Episode Director: Ryota Nakamura
      Animation Director: Masayuki Takagi
      Time: 7:30PM EST
      Watch It: www.crunchyroll.com/one-piece

The last episode that Nakamura directed was 850, the one following Pedro's sacrifice that ended with Luffy pulling Katakuri into the Mirror World. That one was pretty good and this episode also deals in backstory content so I'm expecting another good turn.

There won't be an episode next week.

I know you dont do animator power levels anymore and I praise you for that decision but I would love it if you still gave some sort of heads up when people who are outstanding are going to work on a given week's episode.

Wow, Ace almost groped Yamato's tits on their first encounter.

This episode was pretty much exactly what I expected it to be based on Ryota Nakamura's Whole Cake Island episode: excellent directing, storyboarding, and, most of all, use of color and lighting. The second half of the flashback with Yamato and Ace outside of Onigashima was gorgeous; all the beauty of that shot from 850 of Carrot and Pedro watching the sunset on Zou extended out to a half-episode's length.

I hope that 1014 can be a bit of a turnaround for Katsumi Tokoro since the episodes that he's been directing lately haven't had quite the amount of shine that they've had in the past. I'm just getting a bit impatient for 1015 to air already, and it's going to be a long month…

Any guesses on when the show will come back? Did they even announce what exactly was damaged in the hack? Wild to have an extended break for this show. Do we know if they’re on vacation or getting ahead? Though they certainly deserve the former, the greedy and terribly selfish fan in me hopes for the latter )breaks usually result in better quality episodes and sometimes even better pacing).

From my understanding, the servers were shut down, meaning there is greater difficulty in working on their shows. While production is slowed down, I don't believe it has stopped. As for news, I believe that they revealed that we would learn more about the airing of the Dragon Quest Adventures of Dai series, another Toei show, around April 3rd, so perhaps we will learn about when they plan to bring back One Piece around that time.

We probably get more or so an idea of when One Piece starts back again when we will find out when Digimon and Pretty Cure starts back up (One Piece, Digimon, and Pretty Cure are Toei Animation's big Sunday mornings shows).

If I’m to be honest, I’d rather it stay away for a long time. This hiatus might be the best thing to happen to One Piece. Let’s wait until August or even later.

I’m not impressed with Toei’s direction. So much of what I love from the manga is poorly translated on screen. Just… start all over.

I actually disagree. While some of the direction has been great and there have been some amazing cuts for big moments, the abysmal pacing and lack of fluid animation really take away from how frenetic Onigashima feels in the manga.

Toei just doesn’t seem to get that they have lightning in a bottle with One Piece. Everyone loves the manga, but the anime is unwatchable and ignores much of what makes the manga so great. Honestly, they’re reducing the financial potential of the series right now.

Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen proved what successes can be born from a production company and resources that actually care. But Toei, the most financially successful animation studio in Japan, doesn’t care to get it right. Terrible business move for overseas revenue.

In fact, I’d argue that the anime creates quite a few detractors of the series who actively tell friends to stay away because of the perceived lack of quality.

The thing is though…Onigashima is an arc that does benefit from slower pacing in some areas. Onigashima has a mega ton of sub plots going on at the same time, and although it has a lot of really cool and memorable ones, it has a lot that go on for far to long that just aren't great. I think the anime does have and currently has expanded on a few plotlines or moments that definitely benefitted from the increased spectacle. I think this episode, 1004, and 1006 are the very best examples when the anime does stuff right, but I generally think that can applied for most episodes generally in some way or the other.

This isn't to say that the One Piece anime is well paced. Its not, it is a massive slog of a show, but at the same time, its not a series that I think would work well with a 3 chapter per episode format like in some other shonens(namely because One Piece chapters are stupidly dense, with tons of cutaways every chapter which makes things difficult to follow even in the manga).

I'd also argue that something I do think the anime does improve upon from time to time is actual storytelling. For exampe, this episode is considered by most people to be vastly superior in the content it adapted due to actually giving characters like Yamato a percievable character arc that was otherwise totally lacking in the manga, which emphasized why she had such a strong connection with Ace. In the manga, its very abrupt, and doesn't have the same kind of emotional weight.

Not treating your audience like an idiot is one of the key formula to a successful series though. Like you can literally turn your brain off and still be mildly annoyed by how much reminding the series does to you on a binge. Powerful series nowadays don't do that at all. There's so much potential for success in making an arc fast paced and crazy, which I think is Oda's vision, in the anime. Like, compared to Wano, the anime blitzed through East Blue and with the filler arc in Alabasta, also did paced itself rather well there. That was when you get your newcomers and fans because even if the animation is dated, the pacing wasn't abysmal. On a weekly schedule, not only is the animation inconsistent and bad (dressorsa, punk hazard), the pacing is insufferable. Toei knows this and does it for a reason because the greatest appeal of One Piece is that it can be enjoyed for everyone and it is also, based on Toei's corporate decisions, its greatest weakness. Capitalizing on the family time slot and the children watching, the anime adaption paces itself for the lowest denominator.

I'm not saying that families and kids are not capable of criticizing tv shows, I'm saying that this is pretty much the Japanese version of a Sunday cartoon category we are looking at.

One Piece being too big and so instilled in their culture backfires so hard and so painfully onto the anime series. And it's not like Toei can't do cover stories and can't do filler arcs, they don't want to because we are not their audience. Kids looking to see the straw hats want to see the straw hats, people who turn it on as background noise is not going to be invested in a side character's story from Dressrosa. Alas, the tragedy of tv ratings. Doing filler arcs in long-assed arcs is even worse and can caused even more disconnect. God, I wish One Piece did shitty naruto filler arcs because then we at least have a reasonable pacing.

They could drop the series and do seasonal but who's going to pay for all the staff who keeps it running weekly that has sunk so deep into the weekly format, and what about the consequences? Media franchising and One Piece as a marketing device is too big to pull a halt that overseas blu ray sales make up little to compensate that amount of loss.

                                        Just my two cents.
