I agree. Even Luffy didn't like Yamato trying to impersonate Oden, as if disliking someone trying to use the persona of another person to forward their own agenda. The story hasn't really touched on the impersonation being a negative for Yamato, but who knows, maybe it will be start being delved into after Kaido's defeat.

I think that seeing as how Yamato doesn't have her own identity and doesn't have greater purpose to go with Luffy right now, I don't doubt Yamato is being put in Wano as a sort of test to see how content she is in trying to be like Oden in Wano while Luffy and the others are having fun elsewhere, and have her think about things over again that will finally lead to her traveling with the crew, as herself, which Momo may be the catalyst for since they're both interested in lore like Joy Boy.
I get the feeling the next arc will give her enough time for her choice of being Oden in Wano to really sink in and deal with any insecurities she has, revealing what she really takes pride in beyond being Oden. Yamato didn't really have a "Shanks" in her life either, since it seems that she never met with Oden despite admiring him. So Momo might be built up to be the "Shanks" in Yamato's life, one she can share a dream/common interest with, which might be opening Wano's borders like Oden wanted, and be the catalyst which finally encourages Yamato to sail out with greater purpose and find the answers they seek about the borders and maybe Pluton, justifying going to Laugh Tale with Luffy.

Yeah, I also doubt that Yamato's actions in Wano will only end up benefitting herself. Definitely a lot of potential for Yamato to gain more purpose and be apart of something bigger.

Yeah, assuming Oda doesn't do an interludes or doesn't have the flexibility to switch the view back to Wano in the next arc, then that would also be a nice way to give an idea of what Yamato's day to to day life is shaping out.

The only way I see Yamato just staying is if Yamato gives up on her dream forever, which I honestly don't see happening since One Piece isn't about giving up on dreams, not ones you've been chasing for years anyway.
I agree, the joining is more likely postponed than not happening at all/
However, given that Jimbei's postponement contributed nothing positive to the story, I'm not happy about it happening it to Yamato.
There would be zero change to the story if Jimbei left with the crew at Whole Cake. Give him some "undercover" thing to do like most of the crew was, and there ya go. His excuse for taking so long after helping his ex-crew was literally just "Welp, we HAD to get shitfaced drunk together afterward".
It's weird with Oda, time, and finishing the series. He says he wants to wrap it up soon. We know he's usually not good to his word every time he says that. Though with other story beats leaning toward it ending, we think we are closer to the ending of the story.
And yet he spends how many MONTHS of just building up Yamato, only to leave them in Wano for now?
At this point in the story, it just doesn't feel justified unless Oda has something very important for Yamato to do, relatively soon, that will impact the story in a meaningful way.

Assuming Yamato is in Wano partially to realize the ultimate dream of opening the borders, potentially shared with Momo, one would have to figure either Yamato would do something or something would happen to her that would give cause and effect in leading into that dream. Question is what.
@electricmastro I can see that point. But to what degree, versus being in the Strawhats -if the ultimate path for Yamato IS joining the crew-.
Oda can write any reason in the wold for Yamato to play in eventually opening Wano's borders. And I'm sure whatever he has planned for Wano and Yamato will turn out great.
But the issue is he spent so much time building up to Yamato leaving Wano with Luffy. And making them a parallel to Oden who eventually joined Roger on his final voyage.
And yeah, he technically gets away with the "Yamato is Oden, Oden didn't instantly join Roger" etc.
But if Oda has genuine plans to both rap the series up in the next 5-7 years, and that includes Yamato joining at some point, I don't see it being done in a meaningful way that explains not having them join now.
In the same way I still don't see how Oda justified leaving Jimbei behind for half of the longest arc of the series with no justification in the story aspect.

I admit I'm not sure what exactly led to Yamato to changing her mind, because I doubt Aramaki scared her into thinking she has to sacrifice her freedom at the cost of helping out Momo, but that said, seeing as how Yamato had all these interactions and discussions with Momo before Kaido's defeat, I get the feeling Oda felt he had to build up the relationship between Yamato and Momo more in order to build up to whatever profound moments he's thinking of.
I've got a question for y'all. Since Yamato basically introduced himself by asking Luffy to join his crew, we have all always judged him according to the standards we hold for a new crewmember. Interactions with the crew, dream, tragic backstory, loveability etc. Basically, we judged him like we would judge a main character. And from the reactions to him not joining after all, I've noticed a sort of consensus that people quite like the character, but weren't so hot on him becoming a full-fledged crewmember and are thus more or less relieved he won't be (for now) (of course, there is an even bigger consensus that the execution for this plot development was really lacking).
So, my question is: does your judgment of Yamato as a character change now that we have to reconsider him not as a crewmember and main character, but as a secondary, more or less arc-centric (time will tell) character? Because, to me, if I forget about all my qualms I had about him joining the crew, forget about all that stuff and just look at him like I would at any other secondary character in the story? Then he might just be one of my absolute favorite non-main characters in the whole series!
I just found Yamato immensely likable and fun. He was a real scene-stealer during the raid, got his own little flashback, even got to fight the main villain for a bit. It's a character with a lot of potential and I find myself wanting to see more of him in the future. That's not something I can say for a lot of characters in One Piece. Don't get me wrong, there are literally dozens of characters in One Piece I really love - that's one of Oda's gifts as a writer, he just knows how to make you fall in love with his creations - and I'm always happy when we get to see them again in the story. But I don't often find myself bummed out at the end of an arc because I want to see more of a particular character.
And that's how I feel about Yamato right now. I'm not per se bummed that he didn't join the crew - as I said in the spoiler chapter thread, I don't really need more crewmembers after Jinbe - but I wouldn't have minded him tagging along for a while, like Law or Vivi did. And as much as I didn't like how Oda executed things in the current chapter, I think the fact that I feel like this about a character that was only introduced really late in the arc, and also that it is totally believable and rings true that Luffy would allow him to join the crew when Yamato feels ready to, that seems to me like a big success on Oda's part.
I've read some people state that now in retrospect, all the time spent on Yamato during the raid was a waste of time because he didn't even join, and I just can't agree with that. Were Wyper's scenes in Skypiea a waste of time? Or Kyros's fight against Diamante in Dressrosa? Or Bartolomeo or Cavendish's fights? Or Bege's scenes in Whole Cake Island? I get it, secondary characters also take away screentime from the main characters and the cast of the raid was already bloated to begin with. But if Oda has a really good idea for a character, should he just scrap that character to save time? Especially if its a character like Yamato that a ton of fans really fell in love with?
Plus, we all figure that a lot of the established secondary characters will play some part in the final war, and if that's the case, Yamato is almost guaranteed to play a particularly big part. While there are a ton of characters in One Piece, there is a surprisingly small set of characters that hold "almost-main character" status for me. Law is in that category, for example. Vivi, too, I guess (don't get me wrong, she'll always be a crewmember to me, but it doesn't feel quite right to give her the same status as the regular main characters). I don't think anything really changes for me. I had figured Yamato wasn't set to tag along or join since she didn't realize greater purpose to sail with Luffy yet and prob would have been focused on Oden enough to value his path more than her own, which is why it's frustrating Oda didn't explore it more before Chapter 1057, but oh well, it's a start.
If Caribou works for Crocodile, then he might tell him about Pluton and lead to Crocodile going to Wano, maybe even with Mihawk, which may be the main reason the story had Yamato be in Wano, not to be there forever, but specifically for him.

I'm not sure I understand the question, since most of the prospective female crew members were Carrot, Pudding, Rebecca, and Monet. Probably Perona and I think Margaret from Amazon Lily.

That’s the thing, that if Yamato is following Oden’s path because she possibly feels obligated to do so, and ends up making it harder for herself to live by constantly trying to live up to his standards and expectations as if her own path and choices are irrelevant to compared to his. You say it’s not that complicated, sure, but can it be guaranteed it no issue can come from going about things like this?

Agreed. Boggles me mind when people talk of impersonating someone else and trying to live up to their heights as if it can never lead into an issue, on the grounds of “it hasn’t been portrayed to have issues, so there won’t be one and will only be a gag.”

Inheriting will doesn't mean you should feel obligated to copy everything about someone else though. Admitting I might possibly be overthinking it, I don't can't people can really blame me seeing how quite a bit was skipped with Yamato such as her conversation with Luffy, and seeing as how we always have the potential to go back there given Pluton being there and Joy Boy being relevant to Wano, I'd say there's a good chance for some more Yamato focus in that respect.
Oda has explored drama beyond the quirk before too, like Senor Pink's drama beyond his baby outfit, so I'm sure drama could be explored with Yamato's impersonation if Oda just took the time to develop into with spotlight. I'm reminded of these fan-made pages which I think could make for interesting interactions between Yamato and the Wano citizens depending on who she talked to, so if a fan can come up with ideas like that, then I'm sure Oda can to.

Give it a hundred chapters and we'll learn that Blackbeard tore down the Wano rock cliffs off-panel and stole Pluton. I'm only half-joking, too. Wano will stay relevant to the story for sure, but similar to Vivi pre-Reverie, it's possible that all the focus it (and Yamato) gets could be a couple panels from time to time, 2-3 chapters at most. So I'm not getting my hopes too high

The fact that Yamato making a choice to stay for now to help protect Momo and the others after he failed to handle an admiral and Blackbeard storming into an island to get a power he feels he can get away with are featured in the same chapter leads me to suspect there’s set-up being done for Yamato’s choice to backfire on her. Could also lead into whereas Oden didn’t ask for Marco and the other Whitebeard Pirates’ help back then, Yamato would be different in asking for help and the Whitebeard Pirates helping out then, perhaps even to the extent of helping protect Wano instead of Yamato. Luffy’s flag protection + Vista, Jozu, and the others helping protect Wano from the inside should be enough to satisfy Yamato to leave Wano with no worry, so I’m definitely interested in seeing where this goes.

With people like Blackbeard running around out there and Yamato possibly suppressing her ambitions and happiness, I doubt any more with her is just gonna be an epilogue thing, but of course, I'm willing to be proven wrong.

Yeah, I think that if we were really meant to accept Yamato just being a Wano guardian an nothing more, then Oda wouldn't have done things like repeat an ambition to sail or have moments like running around with Luffy at the festival. I suppose the next arc could tackle the issue of Luffy wanting to defend every place he cares about, but can't since he can't be everywhere at once, since Amazon Lily and Fish-Man Island are at risk of being attacked as well.
I'm glad Oda showed Chapter 1119's cover like this. It shows that prejudice won't just magically disappear because Kaido and Orochi are gone now. As evidenced by other occasions in the One Piece world, prejudice isn’t always resolved so easily, so any surviving adults who lost family members to Kaido, whether being enslaved or killed, would prob hold deeper grudges that would be harder to overturn.
But in any case, I imagine Yamato proclaiming to be Oden wouldn’t be enough to satisfy and win acceptance from all of them, so I’m interested to see how that would develop Yamato’s character from there.
I like this development. It seems like Yamato has a lot to deal with after Wano in spite of Kaido falling. This drama is good. It'll make her more interesting in the future.

Given how there were people persecuting Orochi because of his bad grandpa, long before Kaido was there, it makes sense.
I could see this going one of three ways. Either she tries to calmly talk with the kids in convincing them she's Oden, she beats them up, or tries to ignore them regardless of any hurt feelings. So yeah, I can only imagine any scenario will lead to something interesting no matter what.

It was suggested to me that Yamato is traveling in Wano right now as some lead-in to Yamato giving up on sailing with Luffy as development into being Wano guardian, possibly even a daimyo, given how Yamato is meeting with other daimyos. It would lead to further establishing how Yamato cares about Wano, given how she stayed after Momo wasn't even able to handle an Admiral.
I'm definitely curious what Momo would have to say to Yamato giving up on sailing to help him actually.

Momo is a 8yo kid who gave up on his childhood to rebuild a country. But somehow the fact he didn't magically turn into a powerhouse able to take on the strongest people in the world is a "failure".
Just because Momo believes it's up to him to personally fight and defeat any invader, doesn't mean that's what is expected of him. He is the country's ruler. Which ruler in 1100 chapters was expected to also be the strongest fighter there is?
It would be awful writing if Yamato gave up on their dream because Momo get hack it at his own dream. That just isn't the One Piece way.

Ryokugyu wasn’t yielding because of Momo or the others, and it wasn’t until Shanks came along and scared him away that they were bailed out. Yamato even credited Ryokugyu’s retreat to Shanks and not Momo. Basically, Momo failed, so Shanks had to come in to save the day. There’s really no other way to say it, especially seeing as how he’s the shogun who claimed would surpass Oden.
