Alright y'all, I'm on an epic search for something that seems to be even more elusive than the One Piece itself... The Skypiea episodes recorded off Cartoon Network from back in the day. I've searched high, I've searched low. They were once all online, but they have all since vanished into thin air (minus two eps that I found buried in the depths of my hard drive). I know I brought this up briefly in the DVD thread, but here's hoping this gets more attention. Appreciate any and all leads you have to get these bad boys out of the lost media pile! Bonus points if you also have anything on the episodes that were recorded off CN Australia!!

I have 2 or 3 of these, found them back in 2011 and yeah, they are nowhere to be found now. I also have clips that were on YouTube many years ago. Cool to see how much changed, not just for 4Kids names but there were some very large script changes.

It's a shame because I had a higher quality copy of #152/113 on an old hard drive that failed. The old clips that used to be easily found on Youtube (like the NEP for "Light the Fire of Loftra! Wyler the Warrior!", which used three 4Kids Skypiea terms in in the space of like five seconds) seem to have vanished too. I guess it just goes to show how important archival is, even in the internet age.

I hear you, but something to consider. These rips were the only way to watch these episodes for several years until the DVDs finally got around to skypeia. So I doubt we're the only ones who saved them and might stuff have them sitting around somewhere. It's just a matter of tracking those individuals down…

From episode 175 on, they switched over to the uncut version and (if my recollection is correct, we'll see soon) only certain instances of dialogue were muted or haphazardly cut.

Wish I could help you more with this. I've got a lot of foreign dub stuff I've been collecting (one of the reasons I'm doing this search actually), but nothing in the way of Japanese recordings.

Do you know who kei17 is over at the kanzenshuu forums? He knows a lot about Japanese broadcast stuff and has a lot of contacts. Maybe you could try to get in touch with him?

Also, the encodes we have for episodes 144-146 (105-107 edited) & 148 (109) are of lower quality (only 320x240 and/or a little grainy), so if we can get higher resolution ones to match the other episodes, that would be the cherry on the cake!

A couple months back I rummaged through the old discussion posts on the forums about these episodes back in 2007-8 when these aired. The only surviving links to those were from the Australian releases. 171, 178, 180, 181, 185, 186, 190-195 were the only ones with working download links after all these years and I downloaded them. Thanks for doing this. I got into One Piece nearing the end of the last decade, so I was really interested in watching what was a lot of people's first introduction to One Piece. I know edited cuts of uncut dubs aren't a super high priority on the Lost Media radar, especially since separate lost dubs in general are more interesting subject-wise, but I always find it interesting how broadcasting standards affect a show's airing. The Odex and 4kids dubs were completely found and are easy to get now, so I was surprised that there were a lack of backups of these versions online until you came around.

A potential insight into the dub's production: the broadcast credits reference an "English Production Consortium" which is separate from Funimation and isn't referenced on the DVD versions.

A dumb observation: once A to Z starts, the Oda/Viz credit starts missing its close bracket and this was never fixed when the credits were re-typed for the DVDs. That typo appears on the first 195 DVD episodes, disappears for ten episodes and then a differently worded credit (which no longer references Viz) takes its place from "Season Four".

IIRC the DVD releases for Skypiea have a totally different dub using the same voice actors.

I know they redubbed much of the early Jaya content at least… Not sure how extensive said redubs were and how long they kept that up for though.

I remember there being scenes in the broadcast that were then identical on DVD. It wouldn't really make sense to start from scratch, as they had DVDs in mind when it was first dubbed. The redubs where just to make the characterisations more accurate and in line with the first two Seasons.

First off, sorry for being completely negligent here - I've been extremely busy the past few months (but I could've sworn I've checked back here since August ), but thank you, thank you for these!!!

Second, I'LL BE DAMNED! These were all right here under our noses the whole friggin' time lol. I, too, scrounged around many of those threads, but I guess the wrong ones because they were all full of dead links (and assumed the rest were as well). Maybe I'll try the ol' wayback on some of the other broken ones and see if I happen to strike gold. 15 episodes to go baby, I just might see 'em again before I kick the bucket after all!

Yes, several instances in the earlier episodes were redubbed, specifically entire lines that had many uses of "Zolo", such as the Mihawk vs. Zoro flashback in episode 151 (though it's hard to tell if both versions were recorded at the same time and were just alternate takes, or if they were done at a later date before the DVD releases). Now that I have some of these Australian episodes that were broadcast uncut, I'll compare to see whether there was extensive redubbing specifically for the DVDs, as no edited alternate takes were factored into the equation at the point (as far as we know).

Ok, so I've had a chance to do a few comparisons, and it looks like there were indeed some retakes that happened through the end of Skypeia (and not just from Robin)! Here's the differences I spotted in episode 190, along with what appears to be an instance of censorship of dripping blood (or at the very least a timecut on Cartoon Network Australia's end), which reaffirms that these broadcasts weren't exactly 100% "uncut". Sorry for the audio quality in the CN AU clips, After Effects spit it out that way. Kind of puzzling why they bothered with little insignificant stuff like this, especially since "Wow, my plan worked. That's weird." sounds funnier than plain ol', "Wow, my plan totally worked!" But I digress.

I can see how easily "CN Australia switched to the uncut version of the dub" would get simplified into "CN Au aired those episodes uncut". The same thing happened to Dragon Ball Super in the UK; mid-way through, they start using the Toonami version with their own cuts applied.

Yeah, I can kind of see how Luffy talking about "the bad guy" would seem a little too 4th-wall like. As it happens, the DVD line is closer to the sub for the aforementioned line, but not at all for the other.

Can't seem to find it atm, but I'm also sure that a few swears like "bastard" were cut/muted as well, not unlike Pop did for Super as you mention.

Yep, you and me both haha. It's especially surprising since even lessor known anime tvrips from way back when still make their rounds. I have a feel a lot of… "alternative" platforms, shall we say, did stream them for a long while, but swapped them out with the Voyages over time.

As it so happens, yes I have, just yesterday actually!

I had previously chatted with him earlier this year and said he was fairly certain he didn't have anything anymore. But I happened to be google-ing around last night and stumbled across an old tweet of his from 2019 where it looks like he had a few of these Australian rips in his possession (including episode 170, which is one that we're missing https://twitter.com/Mendinso/status/1132725386226348032?s=20). Haven't heard anything back yet though.

Also, yes some of those other episodes you have there (while lower quality than the ones already found) are different in that they're from Cartoon Palace rather than Cartoon World or Chibigoku/Mendinso like the others are, so cool to have multiple copies!

Don't feel bad - it is very confusing (especially if you weren't following things closely like I was back in '08/'09), and I think it's why it's been so hard recovering these episodes, lol.

No - we are still missing four episodes that had Funimation edited/censored footage. These are:

169 The Deadly Reject! Warrior Wyler's Resolve
172 The IQ Swamp Test! Chopper vs. Gedatz!
173 Unbeatable Powers! Eneru's True Form Is Revealed!
174 A Mystical City! The Grand Ruins of Loftra!

From episode 175, 0% Survival Rate! Chopper vs Ohm, the Sword Wielding Priest, that's when things went "uncut" on Cartoon Network Australia. That said, I'd like the recover the remaining "uncut" episodes that aired (like episode 177 that mozine just found), because there are several differences in dialogue from what would end up on the Voyages a few years later (and I say "uncut" in quotations because there appears to have been a tiny bit of censorship done on Cartoon Network Australia's part, but nothing in the way of digitally painting blood, cigarettes, etc away like Funimation themselves did for earlier episodes as it was mostly time cuts and a few swears cut out).

Also, if anyone's searching drives, I have a few tips/resources:

-There's a tool called Everything, which can search all your drives, internal or external - https://www.voidtools.com/

-The filenames are very likely to be some derivitive of something like:

"One_Piece_184_(145)The_IQ_Swamp_Test__Chopper_vs___Gedatz!__[C-W].avi" (or "{C_P}" instead of "[C-W]", both were encoder groups at the time, **c**artoon _w_orld and **c**artoon _p_alace

"OP_Episode_129 GCT.avi" (GCT was also part of another encoder group)

"ONE PIECE FUNi DUB - Episode 132.avi" (these were likely episodes uploaded here by user Battle Franky as they aired in Australia)

Unfortunately, there seemed to be a lot of confusion as to whether to continue going by the edited episode count or the original Japanese one (sometimes it was both as seen above), so you might have to play around with the numbers and episode titles a bit.

Hey everyone, so not really an update, but something definitely pretty cool - a prominent member of the lost media community featured my search in their latest video

He's got over 130k subscribers, so hopefully that puts some more awareness out there in bagging the rest of these eps.!

I think that LSuperSonicQ video could have summarised things a bit better. Anyone unfamiliar with One Piece will probably get the impression that the TV dub was entirely different to the DVDs, when of course the changes are relatively minor.

I agree, and I clarified a bit down in the comments section as to what's specifically left to find. Showing those episode titles and filenames was definitely good though.

(Also, you could say those edited episodes qualify as an "alternate" dub, given how many substantial name and dialogue changes there were lol).

A few weeks ago LSuperSonicQ's video about your search made its way into my feed and I was happy to find out it was talking about the forgotten CN broadcast version of Skypiea. As an avid supporter of this dub from the beginning I made sure to download the TV rips as they were posted on this very forum almost 15 years ago, even the Australian/New Zealand airings.

I knew I had these stashed on a very old external drive, stored away somewhere in my parents' home. It was retrieved, and spent about a week shipping across the country, but as of now the drive is back in my possession, and while it doesn't seem like I have every episode on hand, I do have all the missing episodes you seek! I'm not sure how often you check this thread, but I'll try to DM you as well so I can get these in your hands.
