3/ Jerome Powell indicated that the Federal Reserve could begin to slow its interest rate increases, but will probably keep borrowing costs higher for longer than previously expected. First-time buyers made up 26% of the market from July 2021 to June 2022, down from 34% last year – the lowest share of first-time buyers since the data collection began. 5/ NASA canceled a planned satellite to monitor greenhouse gas emissions in Earth’s atmosphere because the project got too costly. The Geostationary Carbon Observatory mission was supposed to be a low-cost satellite to monitor carbon dioxide and methane over North and South America with a price tag around $166 million. 6/ Lawmakers plan to add $45 billion to the defense budget. The Senate and House Armed Services committees have reportedly come to a “compromise” to set the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act budget at $847 billion. Last year, Biden asked for $753 billion but was granted an NDAA worth about $778 billion. If Congress moves ahead with the increase, it would be the second year in a row that lawmakers have endorsed a national defense budget that is tens of billions more than Biden requested. Nah. Manchin is basically the most powerful man in congress right now and gets to dictate terms on any big bill he wants. Why would he give that power up and also doom his re-election? He got to singlehandedly take all the credit for the big environmental bill at the end of of last term... never mind that he torpedoed the earlier much better bills.
And while he tends to not vote Dem on the big issues he does vote Dem a good chunk of the time. He IS a Dem... in a very red state... that is also a coal baron. So almost a Dino but not quite. Still more Dem voting than any Rep would be.
So his interests don't align with the party but he's not actually a republican the same way Sinema is.
Sinema is only doing this because she's lost all her voter support and can't win as a Dem next time anyway. As an independant she won't get primaried. As a Dem she'd definitely get challenged beforehand and lose. She's really hated there since she flipped on bacially everything she campaigned for... and only got in because she was against a very Trumpy candidate. I think one of the actually liked Dem governors in the state has already said he'd run in 2024.
