It's true, it is rather expensive up here. But Massachusetts does have free healthcare. Or semi-free, depending on how much you make.

Massachusetts is currently my dream state to live in. Sadly, it is incredibly expensive. I'm…envious () of you.
-
I live in one of the cheapest states in the entire nation, so sadly, I don't have much opportunity to move. I've been thinking Michigan (a blue area of it, like Lansing or Ann Arbor), but my family doesn't want to move there, so I'm stuck. Unless we win the lottery or something. I'm stuck in this miserable place.
I'm just sitting here dreading watching the stacked Supreme Court wipe away all of my rights and knowing my god awful state will do absolutely nothing about it. (in fact they're all set to enact the wiping away of those rights the instant the SCOTUS allows it)
The US is going to need a state refugee system at this rate.
That basically Brazil.
-
Massachusetts is currently my dream state to live in. Sadly, it is incredibly expensive. I'm…envious () of you.
True. I think our gas prices are like $3.49 right now.
I only live here because I was born here and have all my relatives and resources here.
-
Gas prices vary from state to state? Do different states impose different taxes on gas?

Nolus, pal, just like english is a bogus mixture of language so is the US law system. At least they aren't worse than Wall Street.

That basically Brazil.
Hey so far they aren't taking away rights, just eroding the democratic counter measures to a dictatorial coup and selling the strategical national companies and resources to foreign powers.
-

Nolus, pal, just like english is a bogus mixture of language so is the US law system. At least they aren't worse than Wall Street.
Partially it's taxes and laws and partially it's because the cost of living varies from state to state.
-

State and area, generally. I haven't looked at any gas stations in other New England states lately, but I'm betting they're around the same. Last time I was in Indiana I did a double take at the gas station because their price was like $1.50 less.
Partially it's taxes and laws and partially it's because the cost of living varies from state to state.
What he said. But this is where it also comes to the idea of give-and-take. Most taxes tend to be higher in Massachusetts, but in return we have a good state health insurance and (mostly) good public schools. Good education is something we wear with pride, and not just for Harvard.
-
Don't get me wrong we also have different cost of living between states and cities, but there's national regulations on certain itens, gasoline has the same state tax in all the states, the current price of it (averaging R$ 7,00/liter) is due to a a policy imposed on Petrobras in 2017 to regulate the price of it's products on the price of the oil barrel in the international market (in dollar) and the cost of transport and surplus margin of the reseller so in states far for refineries the cost is closing to R$ 8,00/liter.
To take notice before the 2016 soft coup, the national average cost was R$ 2,65/liter. -
What he said. But this is where it also comes to the idea of give-and-take. Most taxes tend to be higher in Massachusetts, but in return we have a good state health insurance and (mostly) good public schools. Good education is something we wear with pride, and not just for Harvard.
It's pretty much a straight-up "you get what you pay for" kinda deal. You pay less where I live for poor services. My state's public schools have been toward the very bottom (sometimes the very bottom IIRC) for many, many years (pretty sure that's by design, they want to prop up private Christian schools instead, because of course they do. Theocracy is their goal). Our roads our bumpy, even though construction is constantly being done (I assume cheaper materials are used for paving our roads. It's the only explanation I can come up with).
The problem with this system is that if you've lived all of your life in the cheaper states, it locks you in place, because better states like Massachusetts are prohibitively expensive for someone who has lived on the wages in my state. …But states like Massachusetts also protect my rights, which is a big problem. I shouldn't be locked out from somewhere where I can have freedom. I know... "Life's not fair", but the US is supposed to be better. That's its whole shtick. Freedom is supposed to be guaranteed throughout all of the US, but it's not.

Our favorite crazy bitches Boebert and MTG fight with a GOP-er with a modicum of common sense:

Well . . . to be fair our roads are often shitty. But that's partly because we're so woodsy (lots of roots poking through), and because we are constantly repairing damages from Winter. I think I saw a meme that summed it up saying, "Massachusetts has two seasons: Winter, and Construction". The highways are kept mostly clear, but the town roads and back roads? Bumpy bump.

The split between the far-right and the less far-right is showing more and more.
And yet the democrats will still get their asses waxed in the midterms and will likely lose the White House in 2024 both for things that are their fault and for things that aren’t.

Gotta love when the Big Midia has a side and don't even try to hide it.

Sooooo . . . one of the Capitol Rioters is going to jail for 60 days. But she made an "inspirational" video saying she's going to take this as an opportunity to lose weight.

She's also the one who flew on a private plane to the Capitol riot, bragged about how it was "the best day of her life" and she wouldn't go to jail because she's "blonde and white"

Yup. Again, I REALLY wish I could be at that prison the day she gets there and realizes she's in shit.

big part of that is all the undemocratic shit the republicans pulled like making georgia virtually a republican dictatorship forever etc. Is there really nothing the democrats could be doing more about it? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like dems are just holding their hands up op this point like they did with the supreme court. Nothing good Biden does this term actually matters if the democratic system remains so rigged and the right just undoes everything and makes elections more and more unwinnable every time
Thankfully, it's at least on Biden's radar as democratic backsliding is a topic of the coming democratic summit. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/biden-administration-invites-taiwan-its-summit-democracy-2021-11-24/
But I think a lot more can be done in making people aware this is happening. I wish dem leadership was as effective at influencing public opinion as Rs are. -

I wish dem leadership was as effective at influencing public opinion as Rs are.To be fair, the american people are really really dumb and backward, so it's easier for conservative talking points to stick. Just throw a lot of scary sounding buzzwords and nonsense around and like 45% of the population is ready for a hate crime spree, lol.
-
To be completely fair, Jenna's comments don't sound as absurd to a non-american,
since you guys are still typically more hard-assed when it comes to prisons. As far as most of Europe is concerned I'm used to hearing about tv, video games, activities, hobbies, etc within prison.
With some countries even having prison cells that are more like single hotel rooms or college apartments:!
Actually, looking it up, it also depends on which specific place she'll be serving time in.
US prisons appear many times in this list.https://www.arrestrecords.com/the-50-most-comfortable-prisons-in-the-world/
-
60 days in a county jail is only 30day everyday you are in counts a 2day severed some place do 3 day if they are to full
-
It's more the idea she thinks she'll be served like it's some gym membership. It probably won't be as shitty as like the Shawshank Redemption, but it's still a punishment.
-
Yeah, if she worded it differently it would have come off as less ridiculous.
Exercise and nutrition are basic needs, those are almost definitely fulfilled by default.
Talking about it like an extended spa retreat is what's caught people's attention. -
If there's nothing else you can do in prison you can work out. But I think we can agree she won't get any protein shakes and will have to eat what's on the menu.
-
For the first 15 days she will be in quarantine which means she will be stuck with straight state food for the last 15 she would be able to get commissary which a little bit better tasting food but you lose 20 to 30 lbs on a strict state food diet
-
She won't even need the yoga then.
-
I always think about that boondocks clip when i hear the words US and prison.

Trump’s White House Passed Around a PowerPoint on How to End American Democracy
Mark Meadows apparently made a powerpoint presentation on how to overturn an election, and it's been released to the public. It's messed up.
-
99% of the people involved with January 6th won’t go to prison most will get what this lady got 30 days in jail. In order to go to prison you have to be convicted of a felony and sentenced to at least 2 years.

For context, headline of article is "Trump praised Taliban's 'tough fighters' and pledged to help get their prisoners released: report"
Today's WTF Just Happened Today: https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/2021/12/13/day-328/ Day 328: "No choice."
1/ Joe Manchin signaled concerns about inflation and the cost and structure of the Democrats’ $1.7 trillion climate and social spending bill ahead of a phone call with Biden on the bill. Manchin, objecting to the way the entire bill is constructed, indicated that he’s concerned that the Build Back Better legislation relies on temporary spending that will likely become permanent, which – he says – hides the true costs over 10 years. “Inflation is real, it’s not transitory,” Manchin said. “It’s alarming. It’s going up, not down. And I think that should be something we’re concerned about.” Chuck Schumer, meanwhile, is pressing for the Senate to adopt the bill by Christmas. Manchin, however, hasn’t committed to the timeline. (Politico / The Hill / CNN / Bloomberg / Washington Post / Wall Street Journal)
2/ The U.S. surpassed 800,000 Covid-19 deaths – more than any other nation. About 600,000 of the 800,000 who have died so far have been 65 or older, and one in 100 older Americans has died from the coronavirus. For people younger than 65, the ratio is closer to 1 in 1,400. The total number of known coronavirus cases in the U.S. has surpassed 50 million. (New York Times / NBC News)
3/ The Supreme Court denied an emergency request to block New York’s coronavirus vaccine mandate for health care workers, doctors, and nurses. The legal challenge was filed by a group of 20 doctors and nurses who argued that the vaccine mandate violated the First Amendment because it allowed for medical objections exemptions but not for people with religious objections. Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Clarence Thomas dissented, with Gorsuch criticizing New York Governor Kathy Hochul for saying in September that unvaccinated people “aren’t listening to God and what God wants” while defending the lack of a religious exemption. (CNBC / CNN / Bloomberg)
4/ Mark Meadows turned over a PowerPoint presentation suggesting that Trump could declare a national security emergency in order to delay the certification of the 2020 election to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. A version of the PowerPoint, which spanned 38 pages and was titled “Election fraud, Foreign Interference and Options for 6 JAN,” was sent to Meadows on Jan. 5, and recommended that Trump declare a national emergency, seize paper ballots, and for all electronic voting to be rendered invalid, citing foreign “control” of electronic voting systems. Phil Waldron, a retired U.S. Army colonel who worked with Trump’s outside lawyers and circulated the proposals to challenge the 2020 election, said that he visited the White House on multiple times after the election, spoke with Meadows “maybe eight to 10 times,” and briefed several members of Congress on the eve of the Jan. 6 riot. Waldron, however, said he did not personally send the document to Trump’s former chief of staff. Meadows also sent an email on Jan. 5 saying the National Guard would be present at the Capitol on Jan. 6 to “protect pro Trump people,” according to a report from the House committee. It’s unclear, however, who Meadows sent the message to. (New York Times / The Guardian / Washington Post / Rolling Stone / NBC News / Politico / CNN)
5/ The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob said it had “no choice” but to advance criminal contempt proceedings against Mark Meadows after he decided to no longer cooperate with their investigation. The committee is scheduled to vote Monday night on holding Meadows in contempt, and the House will likely vote later this week to approve the resolution. Meadows would be the third of Trump’s associates to face criminal prosecution under the Justice Department for defying a subpoena. (Associated Press / CNN / NBC News / Washington Post / CNBC)
6/ Former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro refused to comply with a Congressional subpoena for documents related to the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus. Navarro said Trump ordered him not to turn over documents or share information about the White House coronavirus response, citing a “direct order” to claim executive privilege. The subcommittee gave Navarro until Dec. 15 to sit for a deposition and demanded again that he turn over relevant documents. Navarro served as one of Trump’s pandemic response advisers and warned the White House in a Jan. 2020 memo that the virus could become a “full-blown pandemic.” (Washington Post / CNN / Bloomberg)

Anyone that believes that is just touting conspiracy theories. It doesn't math out, the virus isn't THAT deadly.
That would mean that if the ENTIRE population of China caught the virus, it'd be a 1 in 50 death rate, 2%. As opposed to the .1-.2% it seems to actually be at.
And if it was just a portion of the population rather than the entire population, then it would obviously be even higher percentage. Like 5-10% lethal. Even China wouldn't have been able to keep something like that secret and the world would have locked down even harder than it did once it started spreading.
Something that had a 5% or higher fatality rate (plus crippling side effects for survivals) that acted THAT fast would have a much higher death total worldwide now, even with lockdowns. We'd be at something like 50 million deaths instead of "only" 5 million.

Minneapolis police kill a Black man while executing a no-knock warrant:
https://www.npr.org/2022/02/04/1078313707/amir-locke-killed-minneapolis-police-no-knock-warrantThis is just awful. First of all, no-knock warrants are against the fourth amendment and should be made illegal. I don't even know why we have them in the first place if it already breaks the law, plus it contradicts with self-defense against an intruder in your home.
Second of all, Amir was sleeping and exercising his 2nd amendment rights when he was forcefully awoken by people. I'm sorry, but that didn't give the cops a reason to shoot him, they could I don't know disarm him, which I'm sure cops are trained well to do as. And even if they got shot, they were wearing bullet proof armor.
Third of all, Amir wasn't even on the search warrant at all. So, it doesn't make any damn sense why his apartment got raided in the first place. This whole incident is just messed up. There are so many questions in this situation, that I hope will eventually be answered.
Finally, I can sorta relate to Amir. When I had a katana, I used to have it by my bedside when I was in fear of my stalker breaking in and sexual assaulting me. I had my katana like in the sides of the bed, as it was the top half of a bunk bed. So, I could have easily pulled it out if someone broke into my home. So, like Amir if I had a no-knock warrant during that time, I would have been brutally awaken by noise and have my katana raised. So, of course I would have been shot, even though I was exercising my right to defend myself and home from intruders.
Overall, no-knock warrants should be banned. It goes against the fourth amendment for starters and contradicts with the right to self-defense against intruders. I see mostly no good out of no-knock warrants, maybe if the person in question is 100% a serial killer and the cops known, but this law does more harm than good. And again it is against the Constitution regardless.

While the No Knock warrants are absolutely a huge part of this issue, it goes hand in hand with just how horribly and idiotic some of these Police departments are acting in in regards to executing ANY warrant. Jon Oliver did a great segment on it a few months ago, even pointing at one case where the department went to the wrong house. Because they simply didn't take 5 extra minutes to verify they were in the right place. They're prepared to end lives in a heartbeat, but won't take 1 extra minute to look at the number on the mailbox of the house they're about to break into

Yeah, I agree. They can't even do their job right - some of these cops anyway. Like what happened here in this incident with Amir, as well the situation with Breonna Taylor. Like how do they even fuck up like the wrong address? It doesn't make sense. And if you can, could you link me to that John Oliver video talking about it? I would like to watch it to learn more. Please and thank you.

Like it's been said before, the police system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
You can have only so many bad apples before your realize there's something wrong with the tree.

Yeah, honestly at this point that might be the only way sadly. Actually, do police officers need a law degree to become one? Or they just do a few years of police academy and that's it?

Not much to add here, but there's a strong feeling of collapse and failed (or failing) state in the US these days. I'd have to take a pretty massive pay cut, but am still considering just getting out while the getting is good.

Nope, law degrees are only for lawyers and legal counselors. Police need only police academy and/or maybe an associate's degree in criminal investigation/criminology.

Hmmm. I feel like to be a cop you should learn about the law, at least some of it, since I feel like the point of being a cop is to uphold the law. As well as criminal investigation depending on the position. I feel like if they had more education, there would be less mistakes. I don't know, maybe I'm just thinking too much into it, just trying to brainstorm ideas to improve police and make it better for society. Then from there I can like send letters to my house representatives, senators and Biden to hopefully have them do something with the ideas I came up with. I just want change, I'm sick of people dying like what happened with Amir. I like cops, but I don't like the corruption with some of the bad or not bright ones x.x
