There was an incident surrounding Lindsay Ellis recently that I feel needs a more extensive discussion in a political context, outside of the reviewer thread (or at the very least much more awareness brought to it).

I was going to bring it up in the American Politics Thread but that wasn't really best place to go, and I think it would be beneficial to have a place outside of that thread for people to share other internet-related issues like Youtube's crackdown on non-mainstream sources, Right to Repair activism, corporate and government data collection, issues surrounding big tech businesses like Amazon, and the periodic attempts by governments to crack down on internet freedoms in the name of IP protections.

I'm not the best speaker on this topic so I think it's better if you just hear everything from Lindsay in her own words:

I know it's long, but I really recommend that you watch/listen to the whole thing.

Linus put out a good video on Right To Repair.

If you want more info, Louis Rossman has dozens of videos on Right To Repair, as well as footage of his lobbying efforts.

As far as I'm concerned, I no longer hold any further trust in YouTube when it comes to channel hosting and streaming. Some of my buds have already moved on to Twitch and are treated far better there than they've ever had on YouTube.

Plus, I'm no longer confident that privacy can continue to be held online in contrast to government interests in the name of national security. I know it's a slippery slope but the more this goes on, the less confident I have that my or anyone else's information here can continue to be held in secret as far security is concerned.

            Coincidentally:

I think companies are eroding our privacy much faster than governments ever could.

Youtube has gotten really bad over the last five years and I don't think they even want smaller channels on the platform any more.

The only reason for me to go on YouTube anymore is to check out reaction videos and VTubers. It ain't the glory days of 2000 naughts YouTube anymore.

Really wish ContraPoints would not go on that awful BadFaith podcast. Trying to have a conversation about cancel culture and how to grow as a person or whatever is the dumbest thing to do on a show where you have two bigots hosting it. Two bigots who can't grow as people and who should be canceled tbh.

Wasn't Twitch being far more restrictive than Youtube by banning you for saying words like Simp?

Yes and no. As a Twitch streamer myself, people in my chat say it all of the time. I also use it occasionally.

However, the use of the word itself is not banned. You just cannot use it in a derogatory context. Same goes for incel and virgin. I've got a pretty nice little community and ever since (and before) it was soft-banned back in January, we haven't had an issues with people trying to make others feel bad with it. It's kind of like the N word. You can say the N word and use it in chats without the hard R (hard R is banned period, no matter the context), but if you say it with intent to hurt someone it becomes an issue.

If they are, I haven't seen it. All I'm seeing is a lot of creative freedom with my buds who are getting by well through strong communities and donations.

Twitch banned the word fat…. I think that's pretty restrictive.

Right to Repair is a response to big companies slowly chipping away at our ability to properly maintain our own, legally owned devices, because planned obsolescence is very profitable.

When companies like Nintendo, John Deere and Apple are able to prevent us from repairing our own devices (or paying a third party to repair them), they can charge whatever they want for repairs, and that typically means raising the price so artificially high that they force people to buy new products when the existing product could have been repaired for a reasonable price.

I don't value YouTube any more for channel hosting and downloading as far as I am concerned. Any of my buddies have switched to Twitch and are handled there even better than ever on YouTube.
Moreover, in relation to governmental interests on behalf of national security, I am no longer sure that anonymity can still be kept online. I know that this is a slippery path, but the more it goes on, the less trust I have that my knowledge or that of someone else will continue in secrecy in terms of safety.

Oh! I didn't know Nintendo did that, but John Deere (From Adam Ruins Everything). Yeah, we should have the right to repair our own devices… it's so annoying. Though technically you can, if you don't get find out, but I think it nullifies the warranty or something right? I mean I doubt police will come and arrest you if you try to repair your own device >.<

Is there any petitions to sign for this kind of stuff to be stopped? I would love to sign it.

If I had a nickel for every person who told me that it's cheaper to just buy a new device instead of repairing the existing device that can still do you good service, I could've bought a luxury yacht by now.

Seriously, I find that kind of talk patronizing. If I still have relevant use for the device, I think I'm allowed to do maintenance on it!

The bot's post has been deleted but it clearly copied your post and then rewrote it "in its own words" like a kid plagiarizing a college paper.

Oh, LOL! 😆 Well, they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…..unless it's a bot! Then the bot can go fuck itself with a 10 foot pole! 😆

If I had a nickel for every person who told me that it's cheaper to just buy a new device instead of repairing the existing device that can still do you good service, I could've bought a luxury yacht by now.

Yeah! And what if you want to keep an old device for collection purposes and the service doesn't exist anymore to fix it? Like there is so many reasons why we should fix our own devices, and this being one of them.

                                        @RoboBlue:

                                        I found this on Google.
