I think another factor could be that OP's fanbase is a little more female-skewed in Japan compared to the rest of the world, as it ironically happens with many a shonen.
ONE PIECE 7TH Popularity Poll!!

Wouldn’t say more female skewed but yeah Females make up a big portion of the One Piece fandom there.
Doesn’t help the anime/manga fandom here as using NA for example is heavily dominated by males and said culture and issues with it that tends to keep more woman from stepping into it.
-
Kinemon was 20 votes away from beating Ivankov in North America. Shouldn’t have split my vote so much, but 68 is pretty decent. Plus, even though Noland didn’t make Top 100 in NA, he did well worldwide (though still not top 100) so that’s cool.
Vivi being 27 saddens me in NA, but having the Straw Hats in the top 20 in America makes me happy.
sigh yeah, if Yamato was shown up in the anime, what would he be ranked in the polls compared to what he is now…
-
Regarding Ace, Law and Sabo, I was mainly curious why their rankings fell from the previous poll. Japan's results had them in the top 5 consistent with previous polls. Just found it curious that the rest of the world isn't as enamored with those three.
Seems to me as though there's not that much of a disconnect between Japan and the rest of the world with those 3 though, especially Law. But the difference in Carrot's popularity in Japan and everywhere else is interesting. She's top 10 everywhere except for in Japan where she's ranked 24. I'm not sure what the explanation for that one is.
-
Well, I was gonna say that when at this tier of popularity there's just not much room to grow anymore since all characters in even the top 30 I'd say are already extremely popular. But Carrot did end up above Ace somehow, so I guess a lot of things are possible.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I also have the feeling that this whole next nakama wars we have in the fanbase (which are a big part of what pushed Carrot up, and Yamato too for that matter) aren't as big of a thing in Japan.
-
Okay, Woop Slap, Rock Star, Namur, and I’d argue even Izo (maybe). They have done nothing worthwhile to be in the Top 100. Morgan’s despite being a meme vote does have a personality. What do those others have? How did the world come together and say “let’s vote for these characters” to the point where they can make it to the top 100, and in a non-trivial rank either?
-
sigh yeah, if Yamato was shown up in the anime, what would he be ranked in the polls compared to what he is now…
Yamato’s placement is still pretty darn impressive, especially since anime-only fans don’t even know him yet. Chapter 1004 was the last one to come out before the voting period ended so he’s been on screen for at most 22 chapters and still managed to rank 15th in Japan.
As a comparison, Robin first placed 11th, Franky 13th and Brook 9th who were all much longer in the story for their first popularity poll than Yamato was and at times when there were many fewer characters. -
I have no skin in the game for/against Carrot as a character, I just find it cool how popular the character really is after all.
And again, to reiterate, Pedro is 61. He is popular worldwide, though apparently not in Japan as he didn’t even make top 100. Dunno what to make of that.
-
Carrot is top 8. Her fans stick to their convictions instead of the new shiny object. :ninja:
-
Pretty much don’t know why people are dismissive on Yamato here or any character.
Just makes people look salty and pathetic
Nami is in the top 3 that never happened
On further reflection, maybe I did put a tad too much salt in the wound. For that, I apologize. Most likely Yamato still has potential to break the top 10 in the future, and I really have nothing against him as a character. Let's agree to disagree for now and we'll see what the future holds. But don't worry, I'm not backing out of the bet.

Speaking of anime with how merchandise and anime tend to be stepped together, yesterday we know a Yamato figure is releasing in September so…..
About around August we should have Yamato introduced in the anime.

Damn. I figure it would be in the next month or so at the latest. I need to catch up on the anime to see where it is.
For now :ninja:
Neko doesn't really fit the DF theory, though. Bunny or bust!

Sanji is a true horny European gentleman

The magazine reportedly was reportedly at 30% back in 2001.
-
I voted for Sanji a lot. I should have voted more..
I'm definitely happy that Luffy is on top. He deserves it for sure.
-
Nice to see both Carrot and Yamato getting into the top 20. It's great to see that both are really popular picks and I'm hoping whatever happens in the future can keep them both going up the rankings (or more likely staying where they are, give or take)

The American anime/manga fandom is pretty evenly split between men and women outside of online spaces.

For what it's worth, happy to see Carrot and Yamato both in the top 20; Keeps the debate interesting. Popularity doesn't prove anything ultimately. Sadly, Brook and Franky will never be as beloved as they deserve to be.
Can anyone clarify, is this going to be one big color spread for the top 50 or separate color spreads for different groups of characters? (ie 41 - 50, 31 - 40, etc.)
Happy to see Nami taking the 3rd spot. I would also have liked to see Sanji in third, but I'm glad it wasn't Law (don't dislike Law in any way, just happy to see the top 4 being Straw Hats).
I split votes for Luffy, Nami, Sanji, Jimbei, Carrot, Robin, Smoker, and Vivi personally.
-
I'm glad a break down between regions was provided. Its fascinating seeing who ranked what place in each region. Different regions certainly do have different taste.
Successful global popularity contest! Hopefully there is more in the future and maybe even other internationally popular manga can try out a global popularity contest.
-
It nice to see the original 3 Straw Hats (Luffy, Zoro, and Nami) are the top 3 characters overall this time around. I'm happy that some of the newer characters (Carrot, Yamato, and Katakuri) made it into the top 20. Also I'm happy that Perona is still in the top 25.

So, what can Oda do regarding Franky and Brook?
I do think they would benefit a lot from an expanded background, especially when we know so little about their pasta.
-
especially when we know so little about their pasta.
I think Brook is more the Spaghetti kind of guy whereas Franky frequently changes between funnily shaped pasta
-
Interesting results
I voted two times, once for Akainu and the other was Moriah
Maybe I should've voted for Yamato, looks like she had a shot at knocking out Ace out of the top 10, him and Sabo are probably the only two OP characters I absolutely can't stand
Feel a little bad for some of the Wano characters, nobody seems to really like them, Hyogoro didn't even rank -

And maybe Hiyori and Tama.

So, what can Oda do regarding Franky and Brook?
I do think they would benefit a lot from an expanded background, especially when we know so little about their pasta.
I think Franky would benefit from not sexually assaulting women.
And yes, get his old body back. I still hope he jumps out of his new body at some point, like a Matryoshka doll (General Franky > Post Ts Franky > Popeye Franky).
Brook did a lot of cool things recently, not sure how one could top that.
-
Franky probably loses points for beating the shit out of Usopp and having his flashback get out shadowed and such by Robins and her story arc in Water 7- EL
-
I say it is all up to his new looks. He looks bad and he should feel bad
-

He also has no ass, all the men above him are sexier

So, what can Oda do regarding Franky and Brook?

With Brook in particular, I’ve noticed how much has strayed away from dramatic tension in the story after the timeskip, because even his confrontation with Big Mom was pretty much played up for hyped up laughs. Really though, his reaction to what happened with Pedro was probably the first time I had seen that sort of dramatic side from him ever since the days when he told about his backstory and when he got separated from the others at Sabaody. A dramatic past shouldn’t stop one from reinforcing from how much of a dramatic character Brook can be in the present, and I’m sure expanding more on his pre-pirate past in light of his familiarity with Germa will help more to accomplish that.
-
-
I'm just here to stand up for post-timeskip Franky design. It took me a few chapters, but I like it better than the original by a lot. I know I'm not the only one.
-
I'm not surprised by Franky and Brook being the lowest strawhats, but it does surprise me Jinbe is above them considering how low he used to rank. I guess being held back for so long make people appreciate him more, as opposed to Franky and Brook that joined relatively suddenly and with not that much setup because there was just so much stuff going on in their arcs.
-
Im super happy for Carrot and Nami! Also low key glad Law got bumped down to 5th. Super bummed about Franky, Brook and Buggy's placements tho. All should be top 20 at least. Good on Yamato ranking so high right out of the gate.
-
So there's yamato merchandise coming in September? And it'll also be around the dramatic reveal in the anime? That's a double score that's bound to skyrocket their popularity.
-

For me, I think it’s that I don’t dislike the new design, but it’s that for some reason he felt more human before it. I don’t know, just that the way he towers over people with the shoulders feels less human and more distant from the others.
!
-
At least bring back the Ace Ventura hair. It really is because he and Brook aren't as husbando as the more popular guys. If Franky looked more like he did before he was hit by the train he'd probably rank higher. And horny votes should only count for half votes.
-
Oh god you can't just put that monstrosity next to the real deal. At least put the post-time skip under a not safe for wolfwoods warning
-
I don’t mind Franky being larger, but the robot arms and the lack of Ace Ventura hair are bothersome for me. Never got used to it.
-

I prefer Franky's pre-TS design myself, but I would say his post-TS one has grown on me. The whole robot theme is pretty cool and I like how it plays in fights and interactions.
It's similar to how current Nami's long hair kind of matches her witch theme imo.
Though it would probably still work if he kept the old design and did General Franky and stuff.

You know what, yeah. I’m sure Oda was on his way to a good design in preparing Franky for the New World danger by bulking him up, but then again, if he’s just going to spend a lot of the time fighting with things like General Franky, then I’m sure even that would have made up for the less exaggerated shoulders and forearms.

You're not wrong about him being less human now, but that's part of the appeal for me. I love Robo Franky pulling rockets from his shoulder. I love the hair changing every arc to suit the setting. I don't think you or anyone else is wrong for not liking the new direction, I just want to point out that it has fans.
-
I kinda agree that General Franky just makes Franky obsolete design-wise. It feels like Franky could just do everything the General does himself.
-

Holy shit, Yamato isn’t even in the anime yet and he’s this popular
I mean good for him
-

And I’m not sure Franky fighting enemies like Ikaros Much, Baby 5, and Buffalo would especially need General Franky in the first place. Perhaps the bulk up would be more justified against enemies like Sasaki, but he’s using General Franky to fight him instead of his own bulked up form even then.

Gotta say I’m really happy about Yamato placement. For a first time in the poll, especially entering a global poll, he did extremely well. I’m really surprised about Carrot but ya know what? Good for carrot fans. Got the whole of Japan to be in utter shock cause they clearly were not voting for her. Actually liked all the unexpected placements within top 20, especially Nami.

Yamato was only introduced last year in 2020, and managed to make it right next to the top 10, which is pretty impressive.

Didn't she rank at #24 though lol?

Franky’s hair pre time skip was cool because it indicated when he was low on energy. Does he have something equivalent in his new design?
