For those who don't know already this episode will be storyboarded by Shigeyasu Yamauchi. I'm bringing him up because, though he's freelance nowadays, he's one of Toei's most veteran directors and is Nagamine's mentor. You can already see it in the episode preview but he's famous for having a very unique artistic sense, often employing very avant-garde and creative use of color and visual effects in the shows that he's directed or otherwise contributed to like Saint Seiya, the Janemba Dragon Ball Z movie, Casshern SINS, and Dream-Eater Merry. This'll be the first time he's worked on One Piece since way back during Skypiea.

            NOOOOO!

Its a bit melodramatic, but the point still stands.

167, when Enel's remaining three priests were introduced. He both directed and storyboarded that one but I don't remember any especially grabbing scenes or imagery from it (not to say there wasn't any; it's just been so long that I don't remember).

Another episode he handled was episode 6, so that famous painting of Luffy decking Mohji was probably all his idea.

I know that some people will be upset that this episode didn't cover the entire chapter it was based on, but I think that it was a good episode because I think that it helped me attach myself to the character of Yasuie more than I did in the manga which would help make what comes after even more effective.

As expected, the storyboard from Shigeyasu Yamauchi was excellent. He's the master of framing and layering just as this episode demonstrates it. Although Yusuke Suzuki didn't go (and never would) as stylistically crazy as Yamauchi would if the latter directed the episode, I do think that he did a good job bringing Yamauchi's board to life, make this episode feel different and give it a more artistic flair. Though I wouldn't be surprised that the series director Tatsuya Nagamine closely monitored this episode's produciton considering that he was Shigeyasu Yamauchi's pupil as Crossword mentioned.

This week's art direction was especially fantastic this week. Props to the art department for giving their best. Riryoku Tanaka (unsure if that's how his first name is spelt), the art director of this week's episode, did an amazing job with the background art direction in this episode. I feel like the background artists don't get enough praise and they've really been smashing it throughout all of the Wano arc.

Monkey D. D. Ragon! So beastly he got two D's in his name!

Great episode. Plenty to say this week.

In terms of bad, yeah I make that joke every other week that the episode preview for the following week contains the content I thought the current episode would cover. Definitely surprised that they managed to slow it down so much this week—and so successfully. Totally agree with MythicalDragon above that slowing down that Yasuie stuff has really helped make it matter more. I didn’t care about him much in the manga, and I feel myself caring slightly more for him now, no doubt to some of these slow scenes. That said, I really want to see the filler scene that clues us in to how Usopp is now riding a bear. Also, couldn’t help but laugh at how we zoomed into Otoko’s nose for the final shot. Another negative, for me personally, was the use of CGI on the houses, cherry blossom petals, and I think even a character model or two.

On to the good. The direction and storyboard both excelled this episode. One shot that stuck out to me as particularly good was where we see an empty alleyway that fills up as the ebisu town residents flood it to save yasui. Plenty of other gorgeous shots in this episode, including the pink tinting on Yasuie and more shading than usual on characters. There’s a scene where a grunt comes in to address Hawkins, and there’s some really beautiful lighting effects on that grunt; this episode definitely played with lighting more than usual. Even the scoring choices were appropriate, though I must admit to being a little tired of most OP BGM, which begins to make the show feel same-y even when the plot continues to shift and defy repetition.

One thing that caught me by surprise that no one has mentioned yet is Oden’s voice. Can’t remember if they gave us a preview of this before, but this episode gave us a large sample of it. Way, way different from what I was expecting, but that’s probably for the best. This voice is distinctive, which is one of my primary criteria for whether a voice succeeds. I kind of had a more typical, deeper voice in my head. But I’m glad they went with something different. It does kind of sound like the actor is holding his nose as he speaks though.

The cherry blossom petals? I might be wrong, But I think one or two of the establishing shots of the city were CG too. If not, they were way more three dimensional than usual.

The focal effect and outlines don't match and some of the the buildings look a little cut and paste, but at a glance they look fine.

The background artists most likely use 3D models as reference for most of those buildings.

Yeah. It looks like they drew on top of a 3D model. I guess that doesn’t count as CGI?
