2th season was a dissapointment because it broke what was being built, but on it's own merits it's pretty good.

But both Teen Titans and Brave and the Bold were in fact, quite good?
And even The Batman wasn't bad, it just wasn't TAS and everyone compared it to it.
I wanted to put it up there but I kind of fell off the wagon with the series around the 3 season or so due to it's timeslot getting shifted all over the place.
Static Shock I never watched, couldn't get past the low animation budget but it seemed okay.
I didn't know you never did.
(Unless you're actualyl saying htose were good too, they just weren't the Dini/Timm/Burnett era, in which case, carry on.)
Pretty much even The Zeta Project was good despite only being a season long and not having a proper conclusion.
Well the second season sucked, so it wasn't as huge a loss as people make it out to be. Weismans' Spiderman was overall a better product, and now he's on Star Wars. So…
To paraphrase Susan St. James Uh-Oh.

Is it wrong that I'm looking forward to DC TV more than DC movies?
Not at all. DC has a far better record with their TV series than their movies. It's like Marvel reigns the movies, and DC reigns the TV.

Hmm. well I don't know how it will turn out, but am sure curious.

So what does everyone think of Gotham? I won't have time to see it until Wednesday at best.

@Mr.:
So what does everyone think of Gotham? I won't have time to see it until Wednesday at best.
Surprisingly better than I thought it would be.Tuning in, I had the expectation that it was going to be mediocre, but was pleasantly surprised.
Ben Mackenzie absolutely nailed down the role of a young James Gordon, and I really dug the dynamic partnership and banter between him and Harvey Bullock (whose actor also did a great job). Catwoman was delightfully slinky (perfect casting choice!), and Oswald was pretty okay. Am actually looking forward to and invested in watching future episodes.
Complaints and oddities that stuck out:
-
There was no valid reason why Oswald hates being called Penguin, since there isn't anything remotely deformed or imbalanced about his appearance that would give others the visual impression of a penguin. (Unlike in the comics or Arkham series, with his very short (4ft 10in) stature, hunchback shoulders, and love of ornithology). Robin Lord Taylor's Penguin has an Adrien Brody nose which could be somewhat reminiscent of a beak, but that's about it. Nothing Penguin-ish about him that stands out enough to warrant that moniker.
-
Poison Ivy's name being changed from Pamela Lillian Isley to Ivy Pepper. Gotta agree completely with Demon Rin and Valiantt on this one, it was really, really dumb.
! There is a minor sub-plot with Ivy's wife-beating and abusive father being framed as a scapegoat by the corrupt GCPD and the Falcone family for the murder of the Wayne's in an effort to close the case quickly
- Ivy's dad was such a minor throw-away character that the writers quite literally could have used any other child (like just a random, irrelevant low-income Gotham family) and absolutely nothing would have been lost from the plot line. Ivy herself was such an insignificant background character that she had only two words of dialogue! Her debut appearance was entirely wasted, she wasn't the least bit memorable in anyway, (unlike the young Catwoman), wasn't even focused on, and was just a blatantly transparent and poor attempt by the writers/producers to shoe-horn another early batman villain in for the sake of name recognition, even if absolutely nothing was done with her character at all. A shame, really.
I'd give the pilot episode a solid 8/10. The show could get better, and it does show promise, or it could get worse. I'll have to wait and see.
-
-
Solid pilot Gordon and Bullock are great. That whole Ivy situation was cringe worthy kill it with fire. Soooooooooo Barbara had a
! sexy phase with Montoya definitely no complaints on my end but It's obvious that whole thing is not over.

People do change their names you know. So it can easily be she grew up, changed her name to w.e it was in the comics.
Over all, i liked this episode. I think i'll enjoy this series. Hopefully one day It'll lead into a Batman series, since we can rule out him ever appearing in this series.
-
-
I think you're missing the point if you just rack it up to "Oh she could've just have changed her name to the one she has in the comics"
-
Dammit, I missed it. How did Fish Mooney turn out? That's a character I was really interested in.

All your other points were fair, and I agree with them, but this one.. not really? You pointed out the nose, which could easily cause people to start calling him by that name. It's kinda in the way his hair sticks up too. I thought it was enough (I hadn't read any news about the series other than when it aired, and saw no character designs beforehand, and still realized who it was before his name was stated). I do agree that he definitely doesn't compare to previous iterations of the character though.
Either way, good pilot episode. This is the first series in a while that I'm going to be watching weekly, and I very much look forward to the ride. As with anything, I can only hope it continues to get better.
Edit: Teaser for next week:

This is EXACTLY what I was afraid of.
I might actually check this thing out if I have an hour to kill sometime, but my hopes for the entire thing are absolutely rock bottom thanks to this.
-
-
Ehh at least if you're expectations are rock bottom, there is no other direction but to go upwards .
But still, I really can't fathom some of these changes. If one makes changes to something that staple, there ought to be really be a good damn reason behind it that either improves, clarifies, or puts a neat twist on the original subject (for example, Mr. Freeze from BtAs being an excellent example). Stuff like changing Bullock was fine. The Penguin changes I CAN overlook if the actor does a decent job in the long run (I can then at least rationalize they went a new direction due to the actor being a good fit or something though I would have preferred Arkham City/Origins penguin> stubby cockney accent guy). But the Poison Ivy stuff (everything) seems to lack any rhyme or reason.
I really REALLY hope someone interviews one of the writers and inquires why they bothered to make such a minor change like Poison Ivy's name (and hopefully it is not for plot based reasons like Lightningace's suggestion because that would be dumb). Ugh, makes me wonder what they will do with the other villains. We've got 3 shown so far (unless I'm missing one) and they've already made some major changes with 2 of them (even ones that don't even require it LIKE POISON IVY's freaking name). Though I'm more invested in the direction they got planned for the Ridder (and thank god they didn't give him a nickname like "THE RIDDLE GUY" and wink at the camera. Though they might do that in the future).
PS: There has been teases of Joker here and there, but I do hope they make the smart move and NEVER reveal Joker's identity. This would probably be the biggest travesty to the franchise next to Batman shooting someone with an automatic rifle and killing them.

He's shot
And Killed
Intentionally
And accidentally
Don't recall the world imploding over any of these incidents then again all of this isn't in continuity anymore so….

Yup! NO LONGER PART OF THE CONTINUITY NOPE! NOPE! NOPE!
/me runs away screaming about incongruities.

Its actually funny how you can tell each section is comprised of different ages of the comic.

Different ages more mooks for Batman to kill intentionally or accidentally in various ways.

Finally saw the pilot, and I like it. Nothing fantastic, but far from terrible.
It felt more like a cop & crime show that featured some Batman villains (plus an orphaning of a certain rich boy). I'm ok with this, but it is lacking something.
Didn't care about Ivy's name change because Ivy never struck me as interesting to begin with, so eh.

Finally watched Gotham.
Under-whelming pilot for me.
Seems like the makers focused on ticking the character names rather than plot points.Oh well, I really like The Penguin, a murderous wimp who we'll see rise to one of the biggest threats in Gotham.
-
Saw the second episode of Gotham.
Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle) was an absolute scene-stealer this time around. It was incredibly satisfying to watch her stealthily slink past her abductors and outwit them. I actually cheered when she literally clawed that one dude's eyes out. (Damn Girl, you Feisty!)
She possess both that cynical survivor's wit and old Michelle Pfeiffer charm. What can I say? I'm lovin' her already. This girl is going places.
Meanwhile, Gordon and Bullock are still a fluid & dynamic duo, and both actors continue to excel in their roles (I swear, the writers give Bullock all the best lines). In particular, Gordon calling the Mayor out on his ulterior motives for removing the homeless youth from the streets was an impressive touch.
Other thoughts:
I wonder what caused Arkham to be initally shuttered and closed down for the past 15 years?
and The Dollmaker? That's was a rather unexpected choice to name-drop.
No major complaints this time around, was pretty enjoyable. Now I'm eagerly looking forward to Monday nights.

Neither did I, but she's pretty damn good.

But does she have the mojo to wear that BDSM suit in the future?
-
But does she have the mojo to wear that BDSM suit in the future?
This was her first episode with spoken lines, so I can't really give a definitive answer on that yet. But she did claw that guy's eyeballs out with her bare hands and she's only 15 years old, so that's mojo enough for me.
But in other Gotham news, a new promotional trailer is out that features the one reveal that every Batman fan (myself included) was waiting for:
[hide]
[/hide]If I'm understanding the layout of that map correctly, apparently Arkham Asylum is located in central Gotham City and not on an island in the middle of Gotham Bay like in the Arkham series??
Reminds me of that quote Zephos made in the Dark Knight Rises thread:
@Monkey:
Yes that one, but so was the prison in the city. In real life the idea of there being a high security prison in the middle of a major metropolis is fucking retarded. That they had it that way in the movie was comical.
In real life do you know where NYC's main prison is that Bane would have had to target?
It's called Rikers Island. That should tell you the problem here.
I just imagine walking down a Manhattan street and seeing a huge prison just sitting there between a Deli and a head shop and crack up. -
Another good episode (and a significant improvement as I hoped!) Haven't been this excited for a weekly series since Breaking Bad. I've started watching Arrow on Netflix, and it's great as well (will be watching "The Flash" when that airs as well!) These DC TV series are looking really promising.
Teaser for next week's Gotham:
!

Would have liked to seen a bit more of her given episode was named after her, but yeah, she was good, i like characters especially younger ones with attitude, hopefully will be seeing more of her. I really like Harvey as well.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
But does she have the mojo to wear that BDSM suit in the future?
I think she's a few years off wearing anything like that, she is only 13 in the show…
-
That's why I said in the FUTURE. I'm thinking 10 years or more, man.
-
Never too young to start them off
-
I hope the series gets a length similar to Smallville (but with the quality of writing improving or staying consistent, not lowering).
-
@Purple:
Never too young to start them off
Yeah who your ever to young or old to wear PVC Leather.
-
I probably won't bother watching Gotham unless it gets about 3 seasons.
The Flash on the other hand…Wow that trailer has me intrigued. It actually seems like fun. In no way dreary.
-
I'm liking Gotham enough to keep watching for now. I could go either way.
Harvey and Jim are very fun to watch together…good casting. Fish....meh. Not really digging it.
Penguin is pretty good. And Alfred is Sean Pertwee, and that pretty much alone got me interested enough to watch the show.

A nice choice imo.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on Gotham.

If there's one thing I don't like to watch, it's youtube videos of people giving their opinion about stuff. So I'll just assume he said "it was cool, yo."
-
If there's one thing I don't like to watch, it's youtube videos of people giving their opinion about stuff. So I'll just assume he said "it was cool, yo."
More like it's cool but…
There were two things he brought up that I wish the show did.
1. Killing off the Wayne family so early, they could have kept them around and given us a better glimpse of the Wayne family before the murders. Save the death for the season finale. But nope they kicked off the show with it and have 10-year old Bruce training by episode 2.
2. They should have been more subtle with the big villains. They should have made them more like Easter Eggs and left us to wonder if those are the villains we know or not. Instead they beat us over the head and leave nothing to the imagination. "Hey here is Penguin who walks like one and hates being called a Penguin, hey here is Riddler who ponders the meaning of what is a question, hey here's Catwoman whose nickname is Cat. Don't forget this little redhead who likes plants will become Poison Ivy now."
They're trying to make this a cop investigation/mystery show...and yet they beat us over the head with the super-villains....except for Joker. What they are doing for the Joker they should have done for many of the other villains.
-
Actually, that is a good point. They shoulda kept the Wayne's around for a while, would have been nice to see what they were like, and some family life before the murder.
-
True, good points, I agree. Of course, they can always do flashbacks with the Waynes if they want to.
-
Yeah they can do flashbacks, but that is still not as good as keeping them around. The most I think we have ever seen the Wayne family before the shooting was Batman Begins. Like I already said it would have been cool to really see some devotion to showing more of their lives before their deaths. Wasted opportunity I think.
But hey at least they got a Doctor in the show….at least the son of a Doctor.
-
I'm pretty sure if Sean could just fake a lisp and put on a silver bouffant, he could appear as the Third.
-
So, 3rd episode of Gotham review:
That opening scene, man. Absolutely amazing. Cobblepot steps off a bus and at just this ONE city intersection there's beggars, boozers, pickpockets, purse-thieves, prostitutes, crooked cops, and haggard merchants, all conducting their businesses in broad daylight. Meanwhile the sky in Gotham is continuously forlorn and overcast, only allowing patches of sunlight through.
Fuck that sunny, pristine Chicago-Gotham that was in the Dark Knight & Dark Knight Rises, THIS is how Gotham City should be.
You really get the feeling of being immersed in the lives of Gotham citizens, seeing the crime and blatant corruption that they have to deal with on a daily basis, and not just like you're watching an extended episode of Chicago P.D. or Blue Bloods ft. The Joker & Batman. In the Nolan films (sans Begins), I never felt that all these characters were in Gotham, but like they were simply picked up and transplanted into modern-day Chicago or Manhattan. In other words, the Nolan characters may have felt vibrant and alive, but not Gotham itself. The Nolan Gotham was just incredibly dull and boring.
With this series, Every time the camera cuts to a pan of the cityscape, it's a real treat. I'd say it's the best live-action Gotham representation, in my opinion.
The rest of the show was fairly okay. Next episode involves Arkham Asylum, very interested to see their take on it. (considering how popular and well-received the Arkham games are)
