@electricmastro:
Ah, well I get the feeling that Yamato will go through a character development in her realizing that she should be herself and life through life on her own personal terms as opposed to Oden’s terms. I really don’t see Yamato wanting to keep on impersonating Oden after Wano’s borders open honestly.
I imagine so, but a big part of why Yamato wants to go exploring in the first place is because it's what Oden did. Whatever he decides to do, I hope it's as his own person and not as Oden's expy.
@Zik:
When did Yamato say anything about an Oden fan club on Wano?
Yamato can continue his Oden worship/obsession/admiration/fandom far away from Wano. He's already given up the journal.
Obviously those are my words, but as Yamato is a huge Oden fan and has found people who knew and pledged themselves to him, it makes sense that they might, might, want to take some time to connect over their common interest.
@King:
Unless Momo or any of the Scabbards do something for him to the same extent Luffy has done, I doubt it.
Luffy is the guy who destroyed his cuffs and is going to defeat his dad. It's really unlikely Yamato would feel more swayed for Oden when his life is being turned upside down by someone far greater.
Plus, we also have to address the fact that the attachment Yamato has for the Kozuki Clan is completely based on a book. It's not really something natural like he had with Ace or Luffy so far. People who actually stood up against his oppressor because they learned about his plea. This is familiar, because it's what Nami, Robin, Brook and others have gone through.
It's why the whole retainer thing doesn't really work at the moment. We saw why Kin'emon, Denjiro and others decided to become Oden's retainers. They were naturally drawn by him since he gave them food and some form of shelter. Meanwhile, Momonosuke is not really doing anything to actually earn Yamato's respect or devotion. He's just being babysat. And the "devotion" is all based on stuff Oden wrote to begin with.
We can talk about retainers when Momo actually steps up to save Yamato, otherwise his life debt is to Luffy.
Yamato still wants to be Oden. That fact has remained the same since he was 8, even with Ace and Luffy in his life. Yamato has essentially been the same person this whole time, with only that book and stories to draw on. How is Yamato supposed to change?
It's through Momo. That is how Momo is helping him right now. Sure, snapping off shackles and beating Yamato's suppressor is great. But if Yamato actually wants to become someone better than Oden, I think that key lies with Momo, the one Yamato believes will bring the dawn, the one who's opening up to Yamato about his weakness and insecurity, completely separate from his dad. And that's the thing: Momo is not his dad, nor is Yamato. They may need each other to realize that there's more to life than being like Oden.
It doesn't even have to be a retainer relationship. I've said before Yamato and Momo could become the good version of the Kaido/Orochi partnership, with Yamato supporting Wano and Momo from wherever he is, and maybe even having his own surveying detail to travel the ocean like he wants and have a home base on Wano.
@Shiebs:
Yamato’s shackles that Luffy destroyed were both literal and metaphorical chains that stopped him from venturing out to sea
And now that there gone and he can finally see the world, with no shackles to stop him, he finally has his freedom he’s waited his whole life for and what’s he gonna do with that new found freedom? Apparently he’s gonna stay in Wano?
Symbolism be damned
That's what it means to be free: being free to choose whatever it is you want to do.
I may be wrong that Yamato won't end up going with the Straw Hats, just as I may be wrong that Carrot will. What I'm confident in, however, is that there is a choice that lays before Yamato. And whatever way Yamato chooses won't be bad.
