Here it is:
Chapter 984: My Bible
-
-
Yamato is such a badass want to see even more
-
What a great chapter all around. These double spreads were on
point this week
And Yamato is definitely quite the unique one. I didn't expect much from Yamato, but I really like this character already lol
-

Double Enel face in the cover story. That's a thing. While it was obvius Pound and his daughters was going to get resolved in the covers after we saw him show up, I have to admit I didn't actually forsee that entire plot thread being wrapped outside the main story like this. Does make me wonder how it all ties back in to Big Mom's situation and Elbaf.
ANd another of Whitebeard's allies has joined the fray. Apparently crossdressing runs in the family.
So yeah. How bout that Yamato huh? Some people suspected he was a she last week based on the Hanya mask, but it certainly was a quick turn around reveal on Oda's part. I think it's too much Nami face for any serious discussion about them joining the crew, and too much Oden dedication and plot tying them down, but neat reveal all the same.
-
Holy shit, didn‘t see that twist coming.
Cool double spreads, hilarious Jinbe and Robin scene plus Izo, Cat Viper and Marco already meeting Laws crew rounded up this great chapter.
So Marco going after Perospero on the ocean now? And curious if Yamato will reveal any secrets from Odens journal regarding the bigger picture.
Love Yamatos design, she is obviously strong as fuck, I just hope she will be a good character and not Rebecca 2.0 etc.
-
So, no mystery person who was drinking Crocus then, huh?
-
Nice chapter, Izo's return was great.
Yamatos introduction was also great.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So, no mystery person who was drinking Crocus then, huh?
Yet, they might lead the other Minks.
-
Am I gonna get in trouble from the fandom if I refer to Yamato using female pronoun? Her intro box outright says “daughter”.
-
Would be interesting to know if Oden noted how to read the Poneglyphs in his journal.
And how much he wrote about Laugh Tale and the One Piece. -
Did we ever saw den den mushiphone like the one Orochi is using ?
-
Great chapter. Can't wait to see more of Yamato, and Page One-Ulti sibling dynamic is now one of my favorite character interactions/relationships this arc.
Blunder Bagua > Thunder Sigua all day, every day.
-
@All:
Am I gonna get in trouble from the fandom if I refer to Yamato using female pronoun? Her intro box outright says “daughter”.
Yamato is a female, it says the daughter. It's pretty clear cut.
-
For those of you who like review, theory, and analysis videos here's my thoughts on the chapter!
-
On this occasion i´d like to criticize the official translation for the usage of "Blunder Bagua".
Based on the translation of the raws, we got beforehand, The attack ulti is reminded by Yamato is what she refers to "4 Triades", while
Thunder Bagua means 8 Triades
Ulti was referring to an attack Yamato did as similar to "4" triades.
The official ruined that by calling it a "Blunder Bagua". This makes the reader think that its a failed Thunder Bagua, while in fact its, just a "weakened" Version of it.
The official did not leave the impression on me that there are multiple stages of the attack.
Now i probably wouldnt mind that as much if the wano arc would happened to be over already. But it is still ongoing and we havent seen Kaido going all out yet.
What if Kaido or other people make usage of 2-16 Triades etc. in the upcoming battle? What if other Characters can make usage of the "Triades" technique and there are multiple Versions of it?
How can the official correct that? or will they suddenly call it Munder Bagua, Runder Bagua, Funder Bagua, Lunder Bagua and what not.
I know citing the scans is not often seen as something good to do but i really liked how they encapsulated the wording of the attack by calling it a Thunder "Sigua".
Thunder remaining as the basis of the Attack and changing Bagua to Sigua seems pretty cool. it is easier to work with in the future if a different Thunder Technique is used
Feel free to correct me as id like to hear your opinion as well. If you correct me, please use the japanese raws as basis or other convincing arguments, thanks!
-
Fantastic chapter, really loved that reveal at the end.
Blunder Bagua > Thunder Sigua all day, every day.
Agreed, hilarious translation.
-
The new chapter was great. Kiku and Izo's reunion was heartwarming to me. I did got a laugh from the Robin and Jimbei moment. I really like Yamato's character design.
-
Yamato is a female, it says the daughter. It's pretty clear cut.
Yamato uses masculine pronouns and explicitly says he is a man. I don't know what Oda has in mind re:Yamato's gender, but if Yamato says he is a man, he is a man.
-

I don't agree. Yamato used "8 Triades", that's how he himself called it.
Ulti wasn't measuring the attack's actual strength, but downplaying her own wounds by belittling the attack. The joke is that she pretends it didn't hurt her, while her bloodied mask betrays her intention. The underlings even call her on it.
So how a translator could portray the joke, since the nuances of japanese language are lost in english? By calling the "weak" version version of Thunder Bagua as Blunder Bagua. I felt it was pretty on-spot.
-

That's not at all what I got from that translation. She's obviously bluffing and doesn't want to admit she's hurt by it so she's mocking the attack. If the reader thinks the "Blunder Bagua" translation means a failed Thunder Bagua despite the attack knocking out Ulti in the previous chapter and Page One repudiating Ulti's mockery of the attack by telling his sister that "it hit her pretty hard," then that's on them for not understanding what is being conveyed.
-
I agree with Deicide. @DruMzTV, you completely misunderstood the scene and was mistaken by the translation note.
That proves that these translation notes so many people asked for are not always that great -
Holy shit, Neko just got a Gun-Arm.
-
1-0 Dislocating a jaw sounds more dramatic than it just loosening up. Official wins this round
1-1 Butchers>>medical team. Some consider not going to the doctor because they either make things worse or don't help at all. Add Ulti's stubbornness and butcher is even better
Another sign of Ulti having the utmost respect for Kaido. There goes another knock on that nakama candidacy lol
1-2 Thunder Sigua>>>blunder bagua
The "Don't leave me" meme exist in Oda's masterpiece
The guy is dead and Ace still runs this manga. Maybe if Sabo dies, Oda has a list of his enemies and friends for Luffy to encounter. As long as it isn't forced it should be ok. Tama was cool, but this Yamato/Ace stuff feels repetitive. I'll wait to hear more to judge it. The explanation of why some can ignite or generate flames can probably get some more light this arc
Law taking those 3 proves that Luffy's Big 3 will always be Zoro, Nami and Usopp.
I wonder if Kawamatsu can mess with currents like other fishmen. Maybe these waters are too strong
1-3 I don't like "is that hell up on stage". Unofficial executed everything in that panel better.
2-3 Unofficial only shows Kaido's critique of the execution, while the official adds the jab at Momo. Can't leave out Kaido's feeling towards Momo. The pettiness must be displayed. It gives Kaido more character
2-4 Initiative>>>project
3-4 Hour of Legends>>>>
Yup, this adds to Tama, Shinobu, Carrot and Yamato possibly being Momo's retainers. I can see it. Great chapter, but another break smh
-
Yamato uses masculine pronouns and explicitly says he is a man. I don't know what Oda has in mind re:Yamato's gender, but if Yamato says he is a man, he is a man.
She specifically says "Oden was a man, so I choose to be a man too!"
She's female. SHe's not trans, or wanting to be a man… just "Oden was a man and I really respect him, so..."
-
It's bizarre that Nekomamushi got a prosthesis and Inuarashi didn't… well, are arms supposed to be more indispensable than legs in Oda's mind? The dog is the second character to be hopping around in one leg despite being really easy for Franky to make them a quick prosthesis.
-
Great chapter. I'm interested why law and co are surprised with the snowing thing. Maybe Aokiji is showing up? because I doubt the harpy lady (can't remember her name) will show up.
-
Thanks for the insight mostly convinced me!
Still think Thunder Sigua sounds better^^
-

Still think Thunder Sigua sounds better^^
Not for the same reason, but yeah it does sound better
-
What the fuck is a Sigua?
-

Just proves more and more that Neko has always been superior to Inu.
-
In regards to Oden's journal, I doubt any info regarding Laugh Tale and such is in there.. Besides I predict it's going to get destroyed
-

It's because a clear sky is required for the minks to become Sulong. Thus, the snow is a problem.
-
Yamato uses masculine pronouns and explicitly says he is a man. I don't know what Oda has in mind re:Yamato's gender, but if Yamato says he is a man, he is a man.
I'll see how this topic is treated in the story further down the road, but for now, I don't really see a problem with calling Yamato a "she". It's not the same as for example O-Kiku, who calls herself a woman because that's the gender she identifies with. I respect that. But Yamato is basically an extreme fangirl, not transgender. She acts like a male not becasue she wants to be a man, but because she wants to be Oden. It has nothing to do with the masculine gender itself, it's almost a tad delusional. Not saying that I've got a problem with people calling her a he, but I don't think it's mandatory.
-
I'll call Yamato a "he" until he himself starts saying otherwise.
I mean, even his father calls him "son".
-
One Piece
Eiichiro Oda"How long am I supposed to continue the working-from-home corona-manga-creation process? It’s tricky."
-
Yamato's sex is female, his gender is male. The latter matters more to me so I will treat him like everyone in-universe - as Kaido's son, not his daughter. I could care less about his reasons why.
As for Blunder Bagua, I don't agree that Ulti wasn't also measuring the power of the attack, especially after she already admitted how much it hurt her. I think she was more annoyed by Yamato insinuating that his attack packs the same punch as Kaido's, her captain and idol.
That said, Blunder Bagua conveys the same message, but less power-levelish. I think the joke is worth the minor sacrifice.
-
Cool chapter.
-
P1 and Ulti were exactly as I expected and wanted: P1 just fine, Ulti down but awoken in a matter of seconds angry and just slightly injured after being shaken up. Although Luffy's G3 attacks are pretty much his basic attacks now, so it's not impressive to resist them, still good to see P1 tank them just fine… people look down on this guy almost as if he was one of those SMILE Headliners. Hopefully we can get some word on how his fight with Sanji ended (and hopefully² it will be just like in the anime);
-
Btw, I was curious to see how Stephen would do the Raimei Hakke/Yonke pun since the OP translation don't use notes. Blunder Bagua was a good one.
-
This Luffy x Yamato fight, though... it feels so out of place. We finished previous chapter with Yamato carrying Luffy, who was completely fine with it. Then suddenly Luffy is attacking Yamato relentlessly because he can't just ignore the plan to follow someone he doesn't know. Then later in the chapter he is sit again being just fine on giving Yamato a few minutes to explain the situation. It seems to me this scene with them fighting simply doesn't fit in this sequence. Remove those fighting pages and it will make a lot more sense to go from were we left them on previous chapter to where we see them again at the final pages of this one.
-
It took me forever to understand the thing in front of Yamato in this panel is actually Yamato's own foot. We are seeing the sole of the getta, in case someone else was also confused by the panel (so Luffy's punch is blocked by a stomp and EXPLOSION! Lot's of random explosions nowadays):
-
I don't know what is best here: Robin going 100% or Jinbe's reaction to her uncalled for brutality. Best of the chapter.
However, I can't help but question: who the hell was the mysterious shadow sneaking on them a few chapters ago if they never interacted (unless they did and it will be a late surprise? Hawkins?)? -
"Snow". Inuarashi already realized the Sulong extravaganza might not go as smoothly as they thought.
-
I wasn't expecting (or wanting…) any of the Heart Pirates to join Law, but since some went with him it's kinda sad to see Jean Bart being shafted again in favor of Shachi and Penguin (Bepo is fine because he is the #2 of the crew).
-
Neko, Izo and Marco. Neko with a prosthetic gun-arm is just the coolest thing ever. Marco looking pretty cool himself (kinda sad he didn't answered Kiku's "brother" with "sis" just to end this discussion). Marco seeing something in the sea, though, is where my interest lies. Perospero seems the most obvious answer, but it makes little sense to have him meeting Perospero now... let's see where this goes.
-
And Yamato's reveal. From the "Kaido's daughter" to the fact her decision to be a man seeming to be a mere consequence of her trying to be the new Oden, I don't think the idea is for us to read her as a trans man (reason I will keep using she/hers). But if Kaido can concede, I don't see why it would be a problem if one wants to use him/his for Yamato.
Gender identity discussion aside, she seems like a character I can FINALLY look forward in this arc (Komurasaki was the only one so far, but the interest died along with her name - Hiyori is a no for me. Queen and Ulti seem very promising, I have my hopes for Sasaki, but they are still waiting for that click). As for her appearance, the Nami face is a shame, but the duo-colored hair is a big novelty in One Piece (I can't help but think of Kimetsu no Yaiba instantly, though) and overall I think for a Nami clone she has to be one of the best ever. -
Black Maria for mom? The horns match.
-
-
Couldn't Marco just have seen the shadow of the submarine?
-
Yeah, I'm pretty interested in learning more about Kaido's and Yamato's dynamic actually. On the one hand, he clubbered his kid for wanting to be like Oden. On the other hand, he apparently respects her wish to be like Oden enough to actually go along with calling Yamato his son, and his whole crew follows suit. Is he simply such a great Dad to be respectful of Yamato's wishes like that or is he maybe fine with it because he always wanted a son rather than a daughter anyways? Can't wait to find out more, I'm certainly happy that Oda added this aspect to Kaido's characterization.
-

-
Couldn't Marco just have seen the shadow of the submarine?
The way the chapter flowed, that wouldn't make any sense, since Marco just met Law and the others before saying that.
-
I don't know how the reveal reads in the Japanese, but I'm really interested to hear from Stephen about how he went about translating it for the official.
But what we do know is that both Yamato himself and the people around Yamato (specifically Kaido) see him and refer to him as a man, and that's presumably been the case for a long time. So it's definitely not cut and dry, regardless of if the Oda box says 'daughter' or not, or Yamato's Oden fanboyism. Again, I have no idea where Oda is going to take this character, and I'm not going to pretend to know. But it's been clear to me this arc that Oda's exploring the nuances of gender identity, expression, and performance a lot more than normal, between Kiku, Izo, and Yamato. And maybe this kind of ambiguity and nuance around Yamato is an inherent difficulty of exploring gender fluidity in serialized content, especially a series like One Piece where we're all here on this forum picking apart every detail, and especially when Oda's trans and nonbinary representation up to this point has been mixed. But as of right now, Yamato uses masculine pronouns, so I'm using masculine pronouns.
maybe someone accidentally left some Judith Butler on Oda's desk.
Yamato's sex is female, his gender is male. The latter matters more to me so I will treat him like everyone in-universe - as Kaido's son, not his daughter. I could care less about his reasons why.
This part. Like you can't look for a 'reason' for gender identity. It simply is, and it is what you believe yourself to be.
-
There's always room for improvement. If you want to capture the experience of others more effectively, just ask one for consultation from those of that community, if you haven't already. Doesn't seem hard to me. Who is more educated on the matter than those experiencing it?
-
Marco isn't that stupid.
-
Cool chapter. Yamato is going to drive this fandom insufferable in all kinds of ways, though that's not her or Oda's fault.
I think i'm finally starting to warm to Law. He has a rather unique thing going on with his crew/ship.
(altough from the two of them, Kid will always be the better one)

I always found it really weird that Law's crew was absent in Dressrosa.
I hope Bepo has a scene to shine. But I feel Jean Bart is more unique than Shachi and Penguin, and would like to see him go with the captain instead.
I think Law (& crew) will fight a Calamity or Sweet Commander.
-
Kaidou says trans rights, go figure.
-
Bepo just needs to show me Sulong and I'm good
-
I always found it really weird that Law's crew was absent in Dressrosa.
It was a suicide mission, Law didn't really expect to return (and neither did his crew).
He basically used the Straw Hats as fodder/diversion for his plan, his own crew was too precious for that. Which means he's a massive asshole, but at least he cares about his men, I guess.
-
Does Yamato need to stay in Wano to open the borders? Because I want Yamato as Nakama.
