Chapter 980: Fighting Music
-
-
Caught up with OP after a long while.
General thoughts
- This arc does a lot of telling instead of showing. Too much narrator and character exposition at points really dampened some of the potential emotional parts of the story to me.
I would've felt more for Oden if there weren't walls of texts about how great he was and the story would sit with some moments. Moments just sort of fly by in general and not much time is spent sitting with them.
-In the same way, the panelling has become really cramped. I've seen people complain about it as far back as Marineford, but now I'm really feeling that, as well.
-
What I do like about Wano compared to especially Dressrosa is that I feel like it has much stronger story push and a direction to move towards. Dressrosa was really scattered.
-
I also believe Kaido as a threat and actually like him more as a threatening background force, which is much more effective than Doflamingo's constant gloating was. Sometimes less really is more. I'm 100% waiting for the confrontation with Kaido.
-
The world/Roger tidbits have the problem that all big plot stuff has had post-timeskip to me: too much fluff. It feels a lot like empty dangling. Still interesting and engaging, but less and less actually substantial. The chapters dedicated to Roger's journey were neat, but they had very little actual new important information.
Most of the individual chapters, including this one, were okay. It's all about building up slowly to this specific confrontation, so that has to deliver for this whole thing to work as a whole.

How is Lola not married to Lucky Roux yet -.-
-
How is Lola not married to Lucky Roux yet -.-
I Guess that was just show the difference between BM pirates and Red hair. BM makes her crew bigger with her political marriages, while shanks get more allies because they marry, but shanks doesn't forces them to marry, they are free to do IT because they want, was not really about who lucky married in particular.
-
The best thing about the Beasts Pirates is that they have a large amount of women as part of the fodder, like in the Big Mom Pirates.
Other crews seem to only have them as token members.
-
Lucky Roux married Alvida to get Buggy's support.
Strongest alliance ever.
-
Somehow, reading the leaked chapter I missed the fact Luffy and Zoro got out of their Beast Pirate disguise when they stood to fight back.
-
We actually have quite a few options when it comes to the Flying Six Queen wants to erase:
-
Who's Who, since he's gunning specifically for Queen
-
Sasaki
-
Paypay because he failed to take care of the Soba Mask incident
-
X Drake, because they found out that he's a double agent
Considering that strength is all that matters to Kaido, I don't think Queen has the power to demote members just because he doesn't like their face.
-
-
Yup, i'm tired of G3.
I hope those that fell from that 2nd floor are ok.
Zoro's illustrating how he used sound to find his way lol
If the Oshiruko being wasted pisses Zoro and Luffy enough to do all of this, can it do anything for BM? Last I checked, she referred to Okobore as dirty.
When this is all over and Apoo ditches the Beast Pirates in some way, Queen will be the most heartbroken. He even refers to him as a brother. I feel for him. Orochi and Queen are my fav characters this arc.
People will question why a pirate hunter was in a pirate crew in the future. Doesn't matter. Just like any religion, Zoro followers don't question him because he is worthy of our praise.
I didn't realize that larger Beast Pirate before. He might be a Number. Looks like he's just eating as everyone else fights.
Why am I trying to read the notes from Apoo? Wish I can remember that somethings from Music Theory. Well, I doubt it means anything. Didn't realize the girls dancing with Apoo as he did his attacks.
Sub-woofer is better than bass drop

I forgot this was a speculation. Can't remember where I saw it tho
-
I forgot this was a speculation. Can't remember where I saw it tho
Probably when we saw Shanks attending a wedding somewhere in a cover story.
-

Good Mom would probably do the same as Luffy since the reason she started destroying Udon was because she was hoping to bring the oshiruko to people in Okobore.
Regular Mom would probably riot as well, but because that food should be saved for her. -

sanji needs IT. Have Queen reveal that page1 got defeated by sanji.

It would be funny if Queen himself got pissed off after hearing from Luffy that the crowd was wasting Oshiruko
-
Just checked around and found out there's a bunch of think pieces on Oda's bad writing due to Apoo landing attacks on Luffy and Zoro. I'm surprised, but shouldn't be.
-
Good, funny chapter. And I love that this forced people to look at Apoo in a new light.
-
Was there a light to see him ? It's not like there was much attention on him since his first apparition
-
Was there a light to see him ? It's not like there was much attention on him since his first apparition
Clearly there was judging by the mixed reaction. I'm talking about his strength if it wasn't clear.

If someone thinks bad writing=my favorite character shouldn't get damaged, they don't know shit about writing. It shouldn't be surprising that Apoo can damage anyone when he was more successful than anyone not named Rayleigh at hitting Kizaru, even if it didn't have any effect without Haki at the time. With haki + complete ignorance about his abilities from Zoro and Luffy, it makes perfect sense that he would be able to hurt them.
I do wonder what Oda's intentions were in putting those two precisely in his way. For those who think this arc will end with a Luffy vs Kaido 1 v 1, this doesn't seem to be a plot progression that supports it.
-
Apoo and Queen vibing as fellow party people is great. I'm not sure how queen can get rid of someone in a meritocracy. Do you have full reign to kill a lesser member?
I liked Zoro and Luffy's weird attempt at staying incognito.
So Apoo's attack are undetectable?
-
- X Drake, because they found out that he's a double agent
pretty sure he would have been grounded already.
I would say is between Who'sWho and Sasaki, since they're the only ones interested in going up
-
By the way, can we take a moment to appreciate that one fodder that is aware he's completely out of Luffy and Zoro's league, so he decides to just keep drinking?
-
Yea I doubt Queen is talking about Drake, he hasn't done anything suspicious in front of him or anything.

Seems like you can neither see or block it.

It could be he's aware of the deal just made regarding the Flying 6 and finding Kaido's son….

Best new character

It could be he's aware of the deal just made regarding the Flying 6 and finding Kaido's son….
It doesn't sound like it. It's not like the Tobi Roppo want him specifically gone, they seem fine with challenging any of the All Stars as shown with last chapter. So I don't see why Queen would be particularly offended. Queen has also been busy with the party unlike King and Jack, so I don't think he even knows about that yet. Could be wrong though.
-
That fodder heart about the reputation of fodder hunters luffy and Zoro.
-
Honestly, the guys that are actually trying are funnier. ''We can get into the Tobi Roppo if we get the guy with a bounty higher than the calamities? Sweet!'' What the hell.

You gotta start somewhere
That said, it's been repeatedly implied that a lot of the fodder Beast Pirates are pretty ignorant about Luffy in general
-
They're probably that confident cause it all of them against just two people, and one can get lucky enough to catch any of them.
Sort of like when BM's army went to bully Luffy for having defeated Cracker, they eventually did beat Luffy.
-
Can we get the names of Kidd's and Apoo's dfs already?
-
Seems like you can neither see or block it.
It's good to see that the official translation made it clear that Zoro and Luffy could nevertheless anticipate the attack to a certain extent (be it through CoO or FS). Zoro: Here comes another. Luffy: I know. [The scan went with the ambiguous "He's up to something" / "Yeah"]. Maybe a good part of the discussion regarding CoO/FS in the spoilers thread could have been avoided. Oda just plainly shows that it's difficult to block Appoo's attack even if you know it's coming. Sure there are different fundamental problems with the advanced CoO/FS though.
-
I'm not sure they guess it through observation haki. I suppose Apoo continuing dancing and chanting was enough hint that he did not finish his attack
-
By the way, can we take a moment to appreciate that one fodder that is aware he's completely out of Luffy and Zoro's league, so he decides to just keep drinking?
Considering how immensely arrogant the rest of his crewmates are towards our heroes, I'd give him a raise to an administrator.
-
I like to think it is a rare case of self-awareness. But it could simply be that unless you are a Gifter you can't become a Tobi Roppo (Tobi Roppo are the best Headliners and Headliners are the exceptional Gifters).
Can we get the names of Kidd's and Apoo's dfs already?
This reminds me we didn't got Apoo's introduction box this arc yet. More reason to believe he is not done.
-
Decent chapter. Pretty uneventful but fun. I wasnt feeling it when the spoilers came out but after getting the whole context im fine with it. The viz translation kept it very simple this chapter which is a good thing. One nitpick is my issue with a pattern Oda has of making characters go absolutely ham on fodder and i dont really get it. It messes with the sense of escalation and makes abilities look very casual. The gear 3 attack this chapter wasnt that bad but the gear 4 one some chapters ago still messes with me. Anyway, my favourite part of the chapter was the Apoo, Queen and Kidd stuff. Apoo and Queen are an absolute vibe when they are together. Apoo's powers are always fun to see and remind me how bad i want Brook to fight him. Kidd's revenge was satisfying but i dont know how i feel about it coming so early. I was expecting more buildup and also i wanted Kidd to eally twist the knife and not just punch him, since he seems like that kind of brutal character. I hope he didnt just straight up murder Apoo's ass because i really want to see more of him in future chapters.

Agree with everything you said. There's a lot of fat in places that needed to be bare bones simple and no focus in places that needed to be the meatiest.
Dressrosa should have never happened in my opinion. There isnt a strong reason for it to exist, let alone be 100 chapters long. The grand fleet could have been formed in multiple arcs, especially since i dont see them being involved until the final arc. Doflamingo shouldnt have been defeated at all, especially since we know he'll be freed anyway. Plus the absense of smiles doesnt affect Kaido right now so what was the point really. Destroying SAD in PH was enough reason for establishing the comflict with Kaido. The Law and Doflamingo cat and mouse chase and conflict was good but also could have been structured in a way that doesnt require Dressrosa to happen. The Ace and Sabo stuff could have been included in an underworld focused arc. Dressrosa's profile as a seemingly happy and inconspicuous place as Doflamingo's base of operations makes sense but being an underworld overlord you would expect something more grandiose and edgy. Also, having the mera mera no mi be the prize in a secret underground tournament with famous pirates and criminals as spectators soumds way more fun to me. Anyway, i sound awfully preachy so i'll stop here. - This arc does a lot of telling instead of showing. -
Well at least Luffy has a whole nation following him as a result. That's pretty hype. There's a lot of little stuff in Dressrosa that went on, and regardless of anything else, the amount of screen/panel time with the Tontotta tribe makes up for anything. Guess I'm just not much of a storyteller to think of a way to shorten it all.
-

Yes, but that's how Oda shows that it's not about being aware of the attack or not but about the way Apoo's attacks work. Even although hey know it's coming the can't dodge it. So it's pointless to discuss if they are using CoO or not; they have to figure out how Appoo's fruit works first.
-
I guess it works through sound waves. You just have to attack first, like Kidd did.

Shouldn't "armament" also be factored in how to possibly deal with his attacks?

Maybe if one can protect their entire body like Vergo and Pica, but most people can't do that and have to focus on some specific parts of their bodies.
-
Seeing Kidd flatten Apoo was pretty was satisfying to see.

I was thinking more along the lines of what Luffy was just learning. It seems to have multiple applications or levels to it; illustrated in chapter 947.

The top five smartest people in One Piece, as of this chapter:
! 1. Jabra, Government Assassin
! >!
! 2. Waiter of the Beast Pirates Nr. 68
! >!
! 3. Kinemon, leader of the Red Scabbards
! >!
! 4. Fujitora, Marine Admiral
! >!
! 5. Vegapunk, Government Scientist
! >! -
Apapapapa, check it out! Apoo was the MVP this chapter. The man is pure style. It's funny how the best Supernovas are the ones that everybody ignores…
Besides him, the other thing that I really liked about this chapter was the moment when Zoro recognized that Kaido's army of gifters and headliners was troublesome. Even these low/mid tiers deserve some consideration, especially when they're in so many numbers.
We constantly see Oda trying to force this concept that armies and numbers matter, so it's nice to see this materializing here. And I buy it.
All those samurais and minks that the alliance are bringing will be relevant to the battle.
-
That explosion had some real weight to it.
Gave Luffy that Ace is dead expression.
-
Well it was the same attack that took Borsalino down back in chapter 509/510. Borsalino's reaction was great though.
-
By the way, can we take a moment to appreciate that one fodder that is aware he's completely out of Luffy and Zoro's league, so he decides to just keep drinking?
Haha, they know that the two are far out of their league, but the main reason is that the purpose of the capture is to become a tobi roppo.
So it's clearly not possible for pleasures and waiters. The most possible one is a headliner, with a gifter with smaller possibility.
It's becoming strange to me that even if one headliner got the part that deliver the final punch for luffy/zorro as a closing of dozens of other headliners/ gifters attack * if that is even possible, he/she would fit to become one of the tobi roppo
He/she would become the clear single weakest member of tobi roppo.
But we know zorro and luffy could at least survive, if not defeat, the great number of headliners and gifters that pursue them. -
It would be funny if Queen himself got pissed off after hearing from Luffy that the crowd was wasting Oshiruko
Cue Queen's Brachio Crowd Diving performance attack.
-
I'd actually think it's between sasaki and Drake. Sasaki looks like the guy you would hate. But then maybe queen is suspicious of Drake and without causing a scene plans to get rid of him. Also kinda disappointed the materials Kidd made the Gibson out of considering their at a banquet and his hand is made of gears, pistons, hoses etc. Would be unique to have all the metal that would actually be around, weapons, forks spoons, kegs apoos music equipment. Being picky ino.
-
Dark horse pick for Queen's most hated Tobi Roppo? Ulti. She might end up serving as this, more or less.

Can we call the manga officially bi-weekly now? I'm welcome to anything that keeps Oda and his staff safe and healthy, but it really does hurt a bit. One Piece is comfort reading and its constant stream of new content is one of the things that's made it owrk so well in that role for me over the years.
Anyway, the action is getting started sooner than expected. I wonder how Oda plans to pay off on the set up of the Tobi Roppo and their challenge against the Lead Performers, formalising the Big Mom/Kaido alliance and Kaido's big announcement if the festival is getting interrupted so soon. Are we gonna see Kaido just casually giving his speech while Luffy runs wild in the space below? I might have been inclined to say this skirmish was a false start of some kind, but Luffy and Zoro being recognised and Kid joining the fray says to me that Oda's committing to a big fight now. I thought that would be saved for the end of the volume, so it's hard to say where we are in the story structurally.
One thing I really loved in this chapter was all the background character designs. So many unique Gifters! I wonder if they'll all get named in an SBS or a Vivre Card. If Big Mom gets 80ish named crewmates why shouldn't Kaido have the same?
I noticed Zoro is using Enma for the first time in his tower slicing scene. I guess he got a handle on it pretty quickly, given that there's no visual haki-draining effect like when he first tested it. There's not even a thought bubble about the sword being hard to control like when he tested his new blades at Whiskey Peak. Or he didn't actually use it yet and it was just out for dramatic effect in that early stage. He appears to have sheathed it again and swapped in Wado Ichimonji by the time he and Luffy ditch their disguises.
I usually don't really go into line by line translation issues in a big chapter thoughts post, but the exchange between Luffy and Zoro that goes "but this isn't a war!" "I know! But they haven't figured us out yet!" is really uncharacteristically awkward for Stephen's translation. I think I'm reading the meaning as "we can't do this yet, it's not the real battle" "I know, we're still disguised," but the wording of it really just doesn't work for me. I might be alone in that, phrases sounding right and getting the right vibe for a single specific line is a super subjective thing, after all.
Queen not just welcoming the the Tobi Roppo's challenge but actively planning to eliminate one of them is an interesting detail. It's another thing that makes it odd to start heating up the action so soon. When the war gets underway the Beasts Pirates will likely be forced to present a united front, and I don't know what will happen with this kind of intrigue after that.
Cool to see one of the Numbers in the back when Luffy and Zoro are fighting. Does that mean they'll be de-silhouetted and move into the spotlight sooner rather than later?
Apoo shows that Oda hasn't forgotten one of the core things that makes Devil Fruits so interesting to begin with - creativity is more important than raw power. It's a shame some of the readers haven't been able to keep the same thing in mind, just looking at the responses to this bit.
I'm in two minds about the disguises being ditched so soon. On one hand, Luffy's captain coat is a treat and I'm happy to see it again. On the other, Zoro's back in his default New World outfit from all the way back on Fishman Island. It's not a bad look, but the merch and advertising has so oversaturated prettymuch all those outfits to the point that it's just underwhelming each time they show up. I'd rather it have been his ronin outfit.
And finally, I don't consider Kid the most compelling character at this point, but I still absolutely love his screentime because the amount of detail on his mecha arms is mindblowing. If a fight is what we're getting, I'm glad he's gonna be part of it.
Wow, that ended up being more than I expected to have to say about a chapter that's mostly action. It's gonna be a long couple of weeks before the next one, but I'm expecting big things from it.
