I see. Well on that I definitely agree. It might also be that back when he created the name he simply didn't know better which is something I can totally believe after all I've experienced here. No matter what the reason I have no problems believing that this was Odas intended meaning of the name all along which is not to mean that I take everything he throws at us the same way.
On a different matter since you mentioned different anime pronounciations. Frankys VA has for years now changed his pronounciation of "SUPER" to sound more like what I believe is an American English sounding "ER" while previously it was pretty much pronounced exactly as you spell it in Katakana which would be "SUPA". Of course this change has nothing to do with a more hidden meaning and I can only guess that the VA wanted it to sound more English since it's not an originally Japenese term. But on the other hand I always liked the sound of "SUUUUPAAAAA" and it's actually pretty comon to say it in Japan so yeah, I actually have no idea where I'm going with this actually.
But shouldn't the "tale" of Laugh Tale be written as テイル rather than the actual テル if it's meant to mean that?
Volume by volume three-minute recaps on the official One Piece Youtube. I wonder if they're planning to do one for every single volume. It would definitely go a long way for the issue of people having a hard time catching up that they're obviously trying to address lately with the box sets and things like a rereading guide in the magazine. Also nice to see some of the colour panels in what is obviously a much sharper resolution than they eventually end up in as ebooks. Some of these closeups show a ton of the texture and grain of the original physical lineart, and screentone patterns that blend together in the smaller pages. God I wish Japan would give their digital manga the releases it deserves.

And more box sets too by the look of it. So, East Blue, Alabasta and Skypiea boxes alongside volume 97, Water Seven, Thriller Bark/Sabaody and Marineford boxes alongside volume 98, and Fishman Island/Punk Hazard, Dressrosa and Zou/Tottoland boxes alongside volume 99. They're really pushing the getting people up to date angle, and I'm glad they are. Good to keep things accessible, good way to build the hype for the big 100.
Interesting that the Marineford box goes up to volume 61 instead of ending flatly on volume 60. But then again, the kind of rapid catchup they're doing here doesn't need to replicate a gap between pre- and -post timeskip the same way if they're wanting people to just plow through anyway. 46 to 53 is also an interesting collection for the Thriller Bark box, but I guess 5 volumes would have been too short to seem like it was worth buying.
The special box set doesn't have any effect on the other box sets right? I've been waiting for the 4th box set (volume 71-93 or 94). I think it will have to be at least 2022 before any news because vol 94 came out in English last month. I was told that the box sets that I got weren't in Japan and only an American thing. Never looked into if it was true or not.

Yeah no the English and Japanese box sets are looking to be completely their own thing, so one shouldn't impact the other.

This makes it look like they're gonna release the Wano boxset alongside Volume 100. Which would be kinda weird? It doesn't really feel like we're just 25 chapters or so from the ending.
Neat.
I can go with "Oda intended that all along" because probably he did. BUT the anime with the latest movie started pronouncing it, not differently perse, but more deliberately. With more emphasis on dividing the parts. And obviously it was never officially romanized until that point.
So if Laugh Tale was always Oda's intent, he didn't see the point or feel the need to emphasize and clarify that until recently, or didn't even realize it might be unclear, is all I'm saying.
Reminds me of Gold Roger before he became Gol D Roger.
Ahem, ahem… not exactly Laugh Tale but pretty close I would say.:ninja:
Incredible! I remember lurking and reading this way back when. Never gave it a second thought ever again even after the movie reveal. Right on dude!

It doesn't make mention of a box then, just that #4 is when they will celebrate volume 100. No way Wano ends in 3 volumes (2.5 including the chapters that aren't compiled yet for 98). Just too stacked honestly to do so.
Edit: Its interesting that that diagram has everything separated into 4 quarters. Like with 97-99, they are releasing 9 boxes (3 for each "Quarter" up to that point) to cover through WCI.
It almost "feels" like Wano is the first box of 3 in this last quarter. If this is the last "quarter" of the series, then 2 more boxes after almost makes sense.
However I personally doubt it will be something clean like a 120 volumes splitting everything the last few boxes 10 volumes each, cause if you look at each box they all have wildly different numbers of volumes (except the last 2 because of how DR and WCI end directly in volumes 80 and 90 respecitvely):
Box 1: 12 Volumes (East Blue)
Box 2: 11 Volumes (Boroque Works)
Box 3: 9 Volumes (Jaya, Skypiea, LRLL)
Box 4: 13 Volumes (Water 7, Enies Lobby)
Box 5: 8 Volumes (Thriller Bark, Sabaody, Amazon Lily)
Box 6: 8 Volumes (Impel Down, Marineford)
Box 7: 9 Volumes (Fishman Island, Punk Hazard)
Box 8: 10 Volumes (Dressrosa)
Box 9: 10 Volumes (Zou, Whole Cake Island)
Box 10 will surely encompass Wano, and based on the above, it seems very clear that it it will be a bigger box, similar to Box 1 or Box 4 at 12 or 13 volumes since Wano is on track to being the longest arc in the series, and it doesn't seem like they intend on splitting arcs up.
So IF there are 2 more boxes, I can see Box 11 covering whatever else planned before the Final War (6-10 volumes; even if its comprised of a few smaller arcs like TB, Zou, FI or PH because we at least will likely see Elbaf/Laugh Tale before the war, but who knows what else), then Box 12 being as long as it needs to cover the Final War. Or who knows, maybe its even bigger than that and there are 4 boxes. Could also be smaller, but I doubt at this point.
tldr: Wano's box set does not have to be 10 volumes. It can be 12-15 honestly if needed. Doesn't seem like they will cut off arcs between box sets.

Four quarters with three acts each. I think it works well as a structural framework for the series. Wano as the first act of the last quarter makes sense with the way everything has been set up and how close Oda seems to think the end is.
Obviously Oda doesn't write or pace things out to fill box sets so it'll be interesting to see if things do actually play out right for two post-Wano boxes. I think the pre-final war stuff will be expedited pretty hard, and the structure of the boxes so far suggests they don't want less than 8 volumes in a single one. Given his attitude thus far, I'd be surprised if Oda draws Elbaf out beyond five volumes (intentionally, anyway), so they might wait until the series is completely done to figure out the best place to break the final stretch in two.
2 more boxes left until the end of the series, I bet.
@All:
2 more boxes left until the end of the series, I bet.
I think signs are pointing towards it. Clearly whatever the final arc will be will probably cover the last box, but its very likely something falls in between Wano and that. Whether Elbaf is a DR/Wano sized arc or there are are multiple smaller arcs perhaps the size of Zou to Fishman Island/PH, Box 11 seems like it'll bridge that gap between Wano and the end. Geographically, it makes sense since we haven't even gotten Elbaf or any other possible island yet.
I'm in the boat that Elbaf is going to be a huge Dressrosa-esque arc that combines all of Oda's remaining ideas pre-war.
Underworld, Revo's, CP-0, Giants, Rocks/God Valley, BB/Shanks, Vegapunk. You name it. I think ita going to be a massive adventure sized arc that does a lot for the series in answering major questions before we hit Lodestar/Laugh Tale.

My bad, I should've been specific. 2 more boxes AFTER the Wano one until the end is what I meant. So yeah, we're on the same page.
Elbaf is THE Viking island, so it will be pretty important since Oda started to draw One Piece due to a Viking cartoon he enjoyed when he was a kid. Also, I bet what the SSG came up with is the successful artificial recreation of Ancient Giants, which would make the perfect enemies for Elbaf arc.

Don't worry, I think I gotcha. Basically:
Box 10: Wano
Box 11: Elbaf+Other islands possibly (if Elbaf doesn't cover all remaining island ideas)
Box 12: Final War (which may encompass Lodestar/Laugh Tale/God Valley, New Marineford, Mariejois, Fishman Island to some extent).
Thats my guess anyway. I think it truly aligns with his 80% and 5 years lefr comments. While I dont believe we are exactly those timestamps away, it makes sense from a placement perspective on these boxes if there are 3 more.

Yep. I would also throw in moon arc in either of the last two boxes.
I think the moon will be addressed as part of Elbaf. Their Yggdrasil (seen distantly in Big Mom's flashback) will function as a space elevator and they'll have had relations with the moondwellers long in the past.
Also there's a fourth recap video out:
These things could be pretty useful if an English version of them were ever made.
Why are people jumping to the conclusion that there are only two more boxes? I feel like it's really unlikely Oda could plan out the number of volumes / chapters remaining so far in advance.
@Vongola_Boss_XI:

Honestly i feel like he would. If he's been comfortable giving the 80% marking or the occasional timeline comment, he may already have told Shueisha what he plans on doing left. That could carry onto advertising since we've even heard advertising on OP magazine suggesting rereads before OP starts its final storyline/arc/saga/whatever.
That's not to say he knows a definite number of chapters/volumes. Read my earlier comment about that, he could very well know how many arcs he wants to do, but length would be impossible to determine. Some of these boxes are 8 volumes. Others are 10. CP-9 is 13.
Like Wano will easily be 10+ volumes. That would most certainly cover box 10. The assumption is that there is an arc post-Wano or several that will take us to the final arc anyway. Perhaps the next arc, or several, will cover Box 11. This could be short or long depending on Odas intentions. The final arc could be Box 12 and be extremely long considering its the final part of the story. Both boxes could be any number of volumes.
Thats not to say there can't be more, but its under the assumption that Shueisha is releasing the boxes in 3's, and Wano seems to be starting another "set" of 3. But that's not to say the content after Wano can't be huge. It could be so massive in set up and scope for the final war that we just get another Punk Hazard to WCI on length that we'd need more than 2 boxes lol. All depends on what Oda plans to do.
I agree that there is a lot more to go, but i think we need to start realizing there are a finite number of volumes left. Whether that's another 15 (imo, impossible) or 40 is entirely up to Oda.
@Vongola_Boss_XI:
Why are people jumping to the conclusion that there are only two more boxes? I feel like it's really unlikely Oda could plan out the number of volumes / chapters remaining so far in advance.
Of course it's not even remotely confirmed, but most of Oda's previous guesses plus reasonable interpretations of his "five year" plan set the ending around volume 120, which would be perfect for three more box sets. It won't be exact, the endgame arcs post Wano might not fit neatly into boxes of 8 to 13 volumes, but the ballpark is near enough that we can speculate. It might not happen. They might have discontinued the boxes entirely by the time we get there, but for now it's just fun to think about.
^This.
While I personally dont think we have exactly 23 volumes left (120 total), i think its a good guess for now in conjunction with the Authors and editors comments, potential advertising and story.
For the record, I think Oda will be most infamous as he tries to rally up all his tangential plot points and manages to finish the story. Imo, i think the series will probably end closer to 130 volumes, possibly a little more. Theres simply way too much in terms of major characters, villains and plotlines that still need to be resolved. And due to Oda's notorious pacing (which isn't really even that bad in retrospect imo), it will take longer than expected, because it always has in the past.
Ah, I see. I still don't think 5 years is remotely feasible or at all likely. Still think it'll be closer to 10. But we'll see.
Yeah, I agree on that front. Oda very well probably knows the number of arcs left. Perhaps, hypothetically, he has another year planned for Wano, 1 for Elbaf, 1 for additional islands story, and 2 for the final war, but we very well know that each of those could turn out to be way longer than anticipated.
Its one of those things we can't really know until it happens, but if Wano lasts more than another year and we don't even head to Elbaf next, I think everyone can start to realize how estimations are usually blown out of proportion
those boxes look like a treasure to have in my collection
They Announcced for 3 New Boxes will release on Dec 28th 2020 ! Include Water Seven, Thriller Bark and Marine Ford sagas.
The 5th boxset doesn't have a name. Since it covers Thriller Bark, Sabaody, and Amazon Lily, I guess they have no idea what to call it.
@All:

Given that the back of the box is divided into thirds, you wouldn't think that would be a problem. Maybe two "Episode of Thriller Bark" bits and an "Episode of Sabaody" or something like that if they want the back sections to be proportionate to how much space the arcs actually take up.
But these are probably in-progress designs anyway, just like the reveal of the original set had an Alabasta/Arabasta switcheroo and the super-outdated English blurb that was changed by the final release. Look at the series' logo on the side of the Water Seven box, that weird partial outline on it. That looks at least a little unfinished to me. It's gonna look weird if they don't find _something_ to put there, in any case.
Some of those panels and logos are really hard to see against the the backgrounds. Anyone who's seen the physical boxes up close, is it really as bad as the images make it seem? Do they use gloss or foil to get them sticking out like they're supposed to?

I am not a really big fan of those design changing by a volume to another. It looks like a fan work. Water Seven has the title on the higher part, a rectangular frame and the logo in the lower part. Thriller Bark has the logo on thehigher, the title circumscribed, Marineford the logo and the title in the middle with the huge triangular on the higher. The panels keep changing form by a saga to another and Marineford has different shape for all of them.

I guess what they're trying to achieve is the illusion of having a bookshelf filled with different 'classic' hardback books, with only the invidual arcs being consistent. It will look really tasteful on some bookshelves.
BUT the panels are hard to make out and don't really fit that aesthetic at all… it kinda ruins it.

Definitely agree with the panels being the weakest part of what are otherwise pretty nice designs. I understand the need to keep something One Piece-y on the spines even when they're trying to go fancy with them, but I wish they'd gone for something a little more minimalist/stylised for the effect. Like just going with jolly rogers and other flags and emblems relevant to each part of the story.
Straw Hat flag/Krieg flag/Arlong flag for the East Blue box
Baroque Works emblem/Hiriluk's flag/Alabasta flag for Alabasta
And so on and so forth. There's no shortage of good-looking and recognisable symbols they could've gone with for most arcs.

I'm pretty sure they come with all the volumes inside. Great news if you need to catch up, not so much if you've already got a set.
Yeah, boxes with volumes. I'll definitely use them to get the pre-timeskip collection. But it'll look weird on my shelf since I have nearly all post-TS volumes bought separately. Oh well.

Feels like Punk Hazard and Zou got shafted pretty hard in the choices here. Punk Hazard represents more than a year of the manga's run and introduced a lot of stuff that only gets more important as the series goes on. Zou was far shorter, but full of important lore and great character moments. The Dressrosa and Whole Cake panel choices feel too heavily weighted to the back halves of their respective arcs. And holy crap were some of these a pain to track down. Such thin lines on those busy backgrounds are a bad combination, and the Dressrosa and Whole Cake ones being out of order made it hard to tell what area of the arc to look through.
Oh hey, they restored Kaido's body to the background of the vol 98 cover art. Neat!
I bought the first three boxsets in German and I really enjoy the look of them on my shelf.
