After the disaster that was Hurricane Harvey, I felt could use a new hurricane thread to discuss (and warn people about) hurricane-related issues.
Category 5 Hurricane Irma will hit Florida soon, possibly moving up the east coast afterwards.

Frankly, having heard this so close to Harvey, I'm surprised it's happening. The media tried to play this up, seemingly for suspense. I'm assuming now all the major news networks got lucky.
And there's a third hurricane in the works next, Jose.
@Monkey:

Yeah, that one could skim or hit the east coast, or it could go all the way to Canada. The path looks like Hurricane Maria's.

I was going to jokingly ask you "is there a forth one," yet it seems there's a hurricane Katia coming around. It's a bit vague now though.
I'm a bit punch shy after Hurricane Sandy over here. It was a surreal time, being without power and trying to communicate with friends and family who might not how power. We spent days trying to figure out where everyone was and what there damage was. I hope Florida is more ready then we were, especially since they had one not long ago.
@Monkey:

Goddamn foreigner hurricanes, just waltzing right into this country. They're all rapists, you know.
Good luck Florida, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and everyone else… Hopefully Irma doesn't linger for you like Harvey did for us.
BTW, does anyone know how Key West and Key Largo have fared during other large hurricanes?

Ten bucks says Trump makes an off color joke along those lines, either on twitter or more likely at a random podium moment.

Or he makes a hurricane joke in general.
Why didn't Houston evacuate before the hurricane ?
I hope everyone on the forums who lives in the places where the hurricanes are coming will stay safe, etc.
Also, I was watching on the news today about Hurricane Irma, and people were using sandbags. What are these sandbags used for, and how do they help when it comes in times of hurricanes?
Though why is so many different hurricanes coming all once like this? I guess it is the result of climate change?

you use them to help keep water and flooding out, though I dont think people use them for their homes most times, but for roads and beaches and stuff

Oh, I see. So, basically, for roads and stuff, you build like a wall of them in a way to block the water correct?
By the way, I never lived in areas where they are considered hurricane type areas, so I like learning why certain things are used, hence my weird questions o.o

You mean, an evacuation of the entire city is a logistical impossibility ??? Yes it is, I guess. (I wonder how long that'll take though)
btw, what has been done since Katrina (or else, I don't know) to do something –technology, logistics, etc--- when very bad weather happens ?
I mean, the US is getting hit by hurricanes and such pretty often like Japan is having earthquakes (more often). There must be a bunch of guys sitting around a table and thinking about what to do so that next time it happens, it won't be as bad as it turned out to be last time, right??

Predicting his next stupid move is turning into an AP meme. Remember when whoever-it-was had said Trump was gonna look at the eclipse without glasses ? I 'member

I remember the miserable failure that was the Rita evacuation attempt. I'm so glad I stayed home, especially after learning more people died out on the roads than from the storm. Also, I really have no good ideas on what could be done to evacuate such a massive and spread out Metro area… except maybe continuous running above-ground bullet trains to Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio.
Evacuees fought traffic Wednesday afternoon through mid-day Friday, moving only a fraction of the normal distance expected.[42] Average travel times to Dallas were 24–36 hours, travel times to Austin were 12–18 hours and travel times to San Antonio were 10–16 hours, depending on the point of departure in Houston.[57] Many motorists ran out of gas or experienced breakdowns in temperatures that neared 100 °F (38 °C). Traffic volumes did not ease for nearly 48 hours as more than three million residents evacuated the area in advance of the storm.[42]
Yeah 100 people died in the Houston evacuation for Rita. People killed by the storm: around 25
I wasn't being sarcastic when I asked if it was a joke, I just feel like Houston ppl have seen that question going around and been sharing memes about Rita that I thought you might have been making a joke lol
Why didn't Houston evacuate before the hurricane ?
They did (sort of). It's impossible to enforce evacuations of every person in every city a hurricane might hit, so unfortunately a few people usually die.
Edit:

Whoa, what happened? I don't remember anyone dying from the Irene and Sandy evacuations in my state.
Why am I still surprised?
Evacuating a city of over two million people in the span of a few days is a logistical nightmare.

Kind of nervous. I live in Broward county and each day it's looking more and more likely that we're gonna take a direct hit. :getlost:
I remember when Wilma hit back in '05 we didn't have power for about 2 weeks! And that was only a category 3.

On the radio they said power could be out for months in some parts of Florida.
Edit: …This does not look good.

Jesus Christ… I thought they only said that about Puerto Rico? That would also mean I wouldn't be able to work for months... hopefully that's just a worst case scenario.
Maybe I should grab my mom and head north.
Just spent 1.5 hours in line for gas, lol.
Happiness, really nice, a wonderful thing, beautiful, doing great, have a good time everybody. Words of comfort. He really makes damage control of a disaster sound down right relaxing.
These are some insane forecasts.

I'm hoping that the brunt of the storm skirts the coast.

No joke… and that 2 million doesn't include the Metro area
Yeah, the Miami metro area is the tenth most populated in the country. Bigger than Atlanta or Detroit, and only slightly smaller than Houston's.
The spaghetti models for Irma basically all show her grinding up the east coast of Florida.
If you live anywhere near the east coast of Florida, the time to evacuate is now.

Oh, okay, I gotcha. I totally was not thinking it was that, not at all. I thought it was the storm splitting up in different paths, but it was a good thing I asked before making a faulty assumption on the matter. Anyways, thank you both for explaining it to me! ^^
These videos were making rounds over at reddit, for good reasons. Simple, to-the-point explanation of the hurricane and how it works and what to expect for the next few days. It's a little old (as Robo's model shows) but still relevant.
Later, more updated video
Stay safe everyone.
The hurricane's predicted path has moved to the west, and now the west coast of Florida is probably in more danger than the east coast.
Irma is also expected to regain its speed and hit as a category 5.
Unfortunately it's also too late to evacuate, so they're recommending that people seek out local shelters.
Live WPTV News feed:
Elsewhere… Jose is now category 4. Hopefully it never finds its way to land.
Katia is expected to hit Poza Rica de Hidalgo Mexico tomorrow as a category 2.

All hunkered down, stocked up and prepared for the worst. I made it through Wilma, Sandy and Katrina, and I'll shoulder through this one.

I also made it through these, plus Andrew back in '92. Irma ain't got shit for us!
Wishing you the best. I'm located in the Broward, Sunrise area.
In case there is anybody in the miami/broward area on these boards who is insecure about their preparations- I just want you to know that my door is open. I've got ample amounts of food and water. If you need a place to stay, please PM me and we can make arrangements this afternoon! This is a time that requires great community.

:wassat: Trump really needs to invest in America's schooling system…
My mom's all set to ride things out in Jupiter. Her lucky breaks with hurricanes so far continue to hold with Irma projected to head up the west coast instead of the east, but still obviously not fun for anyone down there, in the direct path or otherwise.
Stay safe Floridian APers!

We are Florida!
Every man dies, but not every man truly lives! I am a Floridian, and I see a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny! We've come to fight as free men and god dammit, free men we are! What will I do with this freedom? I will meet this tyranny head on! I will meet Irma on the shores of vanderbilt beach, countless countrymen in tow, AR-15's and Glock 45's at the ready, and not an inch of land shall she claim!!
WE ARE FLORIDA AND WE ARE NOT AFRAID!
!
I've seen Facebook events for Floridians to shoot Kamehamehas at the hurricane, point fans at it to blow it away, and to do the Naruto run when the storm hits. So idk how serious the gun thing is, in that regard.
Oh, and "Gathering All Hispanic Moms To Help Get Irma In Her Place" is also a thing. I love Floridians.
This feels particularly apt right now.

I agree with you there! O:
It also reminds me of one of the regular enemies from Kirby too.
New footage coming out of Irma.
