I was right about Perospero getting a candy prosthetic arm. That line about always being reminded of Pedro when the heat of hot tea melts his candy prosthetic arm was a bit chilling. His design being in tatters actually looks a better than before.

This is kind of where I was thinking that this battle would go. Except it's more so Luffy taking inspiration from Katakuri instead of Katakuri actually wanting to teach him.

Now that these random soldiers have finally said it we can finally put to bed that Katakuri is THE strongest commander.
Spoilers didn't do the beatdown justice Luffy is getting upstaged on all fronts, his base stats need to improve significantly he can't always be relying on his gimmicky gears that drain his stamina super fast. 90% certain he's going to get a power boost from this fight as of this chapter.

I think that it's too late for that. Luffy has been relying on gimmicks over base strength since Enies Lobby, unfortunately. Gear Second and Third were very cool to see, but I miss the days where Luffy would improvise moves purely based on the premise of what goofy things you can do with a rubber body rather than focusing on only coating already existing attacks with Armament and whole new forms to stay in the game of the New World.

His base stats can do significant damage, otherwise Katakuri won't dodge that Hawk stamp. His problem in this fight is Katakuri ridiculous CoO. He dodges or blocks everything.

And I agree, this is a hint on where Luffy's power will evolve to. Imagine G4 with many arms. Frightening.

Now then, while I'm not particularly sad about Pedro dying(I still don't believe it lol), I am touched by how hard Nami and the rest are taking it. It's so easy for us as hardcore One Piece readers to over look deaths in this series but I still like to take into account the characters perspective on things. I don't truly believe in character deaths but I do believe the characters feelings.

Carrot hopped up in the crows nest and is looking out. I'm sure some folks are going to run wild with that one.

The close-ups on Jimbei's face this chapter looked awesome. I hope he gets to show how he will be a unique Helmsman soon. I really want him to integrate his Fishman Karate and sea creature communication into how he helms the ship when there's trouble.

Jimbei is the closest thing this crew has to a First Mate responsibility-wise and I love it. I at least appreciate Oda trying to utilize the Drama of Pedro's "death" even though he will inevitably still be alive.

this is similar to what happened with doflamingo: gear 3 was too slow and doffy easily dodged and counterattacked and gear 2 was fast but wasn't powerful enough so it didnt affect him. like you said, his base (which is funnily now gear 2 and 3 which weren't his base before) needs improving. I think this fight is where luffy sees how he can improve on that like you said earlier.

gear 4 is a different beast tho. if you remember gear 3 when he fought lucci, there was also a handicap for luffy in that he turned small. I feel a similarity coming again where he'll go all out in gear 4, lose the form but he'll leave a another lasting damage on katakuri that will save luffy from getting killed.

Not that I have a dog in this fight, but to add Luffy also 'blocked'/'tanked' a direct hit from Cracker (while still inside his armor) early on in their fight. When he got hit by three swords and tried to tank with his left arm, although he got smashed and clearly hurt. On the flip side, I don't think Cracker's haki is as strong when he is fusing it into his armor though.

Dogstorm said minks have yet to show their true power. Maybe that's the power that will make Pedro survive. I imagine whoever made the zoan dfs, inspired it from the minks, and they could have something like zoan awakening.

on wano it's gonna be an huge alliance against kaidou (and the shogun?)

that's why i never understood when peopple said that big mom was gonna go down this arc…defeating a yonkou is being presented like an huge thing for which you need an huge amount of men and resurces...not a group of 6 people.

Exactly, as I read the chapter of them fighting I kept asking myself what is he trying to accomplish. Does Katakuri want to completely break his spirit or is he trying to train him a la Vegeta and Caba. His dialog almost makes it seem like he wants Luffy to get stronger and realize just how powerful their abilities can be. He is basically the evolved (to borrow from Pokemon) form of Luffy right now. I think this match up couldn't have been a better opportunity for Luffy to get a drastic power up. I dare say the equivalent to a two year skip based off how much he can think and reflect on in his down time.

As much as I like speculating about upcoming possibilities I much rather be surprised by sudden turn of events, it must suck knowing what's to come for Katakuri imagine having an ability like that, shit must get boring 'oh he's planning on doing this next let me get my next move ready'. It's no wonder he commends his foe when he does something thats out of his control "well done". This is basically Enel's mantra on steroids. I think Enel even forged a pitchfork/trident out of gold and what do you know Kata has a weapon like that too. Would be interesting to see how Luffy uses his battle brain to overcome this and do some random shit. The enclosed arena they're fighting in is perfect for Luffy to bounce off walls, there must be a reason why in this chapter alone Luffy went crashing into a wall like 3 times. If he can bounce off, make his surroundings rubbery upon contact the damage he receives can be reduced by a great margin. Plus, he can use it as a springboard (literally) to mount a counterattack. Wouldn't mind him paying a homage to crazy Bellamy by bouncing off the walls and attacking randomly. If gear 4th soon becomes his base then we can truly say he's at a decent level, the recoil is way harsher than 2nd and 3rd's former drawbacks, at least as a little man he was able to run around, after g4 he lays there flat unable to do anything.
But my main concern is the size of the attacks Katakuri is producing they're just that much larger and he's not limiting himself to how much air his body can take in, like cracker before him he has the ability to produce endless amounts of his df fruit.

As for the chapter, the main question for me is how far Oda wants to go regarding Luffy vs. Katakuri. How strong will he depict Luffy? Luffy alone couldn't beat Cracker and Katakuri was now confirmed as being the strongest of the Sweet commanders. There's also the still standing prediction that in the end not only Sanji but almost everyone on the island will be involved in making the big cake, which would include Katakuri.

Will Oda end this in some sort of draw, Luffy and Katakuri being equal? If Luffy knocks him out now, how will he be able to take part in doing the necessary things to calm Big Mom down?

On the other hand, Luffy will have to beat Kaido at Wano (probably with other's help like with Doflamingo, but still), so him defeating a Yonko commander one arc before might be suitable.

There's always the possibility that Oda pulls something comparable to Luffy vs. Blueno at Enies Lobby in Wano, where Luffy beats not only Kaido but also solos some important member of Kaido's crew just to show how much strength he gained. If Oda plans for that, it wouldn't necessary to beat Katakuri here.

I kind of wish for it to happen; there's gotta be a limit to techniques Luffy's during the timeskip and it's too early for Big Mom to go down in general, I feel like another big one like Gear 4 would be too much and developing a new technique right there would be asspull-flavoured. Of course, another possibility is that Luffy will figure something out to defeat him/escape, as well.

Zoro and the rest wouldn't accomplish anything.In terms of strength,the crew is still severely outclassed by the Yonko.I don't know how Oda is gonna handle it.I mean I don't remember Luffy after the TS getting such a severe beating.

The fight with Katakuri sure is hard for Luffy. It's also going to be the hardest fight of this arc I suppose, and so the trigger for the next powerup.
Maybe it could also be stopped right before luffy's death by the cake becoming ready, but I don't really have a clear Idea.

What I want to discuss instead is how much damage Luffy can take from katakuri and put it in context.

Oda always said that by the end of the journey somebody in the crew would have something chopped from his body, a wooden leg like the classic pirate image if i recall correctly.

Luffy already tried to cut his hands off to escape montd'or book prison earlier in this same arc. Could it be Oda foreshadowing some amputation?

It's not just the crew vs. the Yonko though. It's gonna be a massive alliance gathered to take on a Yonko.

Mind you, the Straw Hats should all be pushed to their limits and achieve things they've never done before…but they're not alone in this. Kaido does not seem like a character Oda would cheat out on a grand performance - if there's any of the Yonko he'd make underwhelming, it'd be Big Mom as the token female, but even Big Mom has been shown to be an utter monster.

And the Luffy vs Dogtooth is meaningless with the false sense of despair cause we know Luffy has another mode.

At the risk of emotional debate, why is this a thing? I was at another forum today and they were all celebrating Katakuri's supposed "victory". This is a guy that has been beaten, humiliated and bean the risk of dying far more than anyone.

I can't speak for the the OP however much can be learned in defeat. Some even say you learn more in defeat than in victory.

Silly question is Perospero on the candy mound with BM, just curious how far he can control it. I doubt he can help her walk all the way across the ocean to the other island.

Some paramecias completely convert the body of the user into that of the ability the devil fruit grants. ie: Luffy's whole body, from skin, flesh and bone gained all the properties of the rubber. Likewise, Bege's body became a walking fortress. So it makes sense that Katakuri gained all the properties of the mochi, which can be molded and shaped into whatever form you desire to give. That explains why it makes it seem is a logia, and why Katakuri can take lethal damage and come out completely unharmed.

Pudding not accepting the minister job might be a sign of guilt for something she did to Lola.
I'm hoping Jinbe and/or Carrot will be the ones to knock Perospero down to the ocean.

Most likely luffy will get his ass kicked by katakuri. Then he manages to flee somehow, devastated by the fact that Katakuri is basically stronger version of him in every way. Later on Luffy will learn to awaken his fruit, and tides will turn; luffy rematches Katakuri and will again reign as "the strongest stretching pirate" until the end of series. Katakuri is great build-up-kind of obstacle for Luffy.

not sure i agree honestly, specifically for the upper echelon of fighters. luffy has used hawk gatling twice on katakuri to no avail (what looks like no blocks and just "soaking" it up).

Jimmy is awesome and is becoming one of my absolute favourite characters of the series.

An "enraged" BM giving an angry Peros a ride who in turn provides her a foothold at sea is somewhat cool but weird at the same time. Also they shouldn´t be faster than the Sunny.
Sun and Cloud stuck on the coast wondering where everyone went is funny, but a bit convenient.

Luffy getting outsped and overpowered in his pre-TS forms is not really a surprise after how the Dofla and Cracker fights unfolded, let´s see what happens with G4.
Katakuri copying Luffy´s attacks in such a devastating way was a pretty neat showcase of superiority, mocking the oponent with his own moves, just better.

Unfortunately for me, I got stuck on that kicking action sequence, which slightly confused me:

• Katakuri preps a left leg kick while Luffy blitzes to Kata´s back through his left side
• next panel Luffy is shown behind Kata from the POV of the soldiers while Kata is in a weird aerial position, seemingly finishing his kick that misses its target
• third panel shows a right leg impact

This made it seem like Kata managed to finish his left leg kick and use that left leg as his foothold for the right leg kick that connected with Luffy´s face, OR the connecting kick was an aerial rotating one after the left leg kick, without touching the ground in-between the two kicks. That´s like twice as much action as Luffy within the same time frame.
Or maybe it´s just one and the same kick and this is another case of an incorrect drawing of the same body side between two consecutive panels that has for some reason occured on several occasions recently.

Looking forward to what Luffy comes up with to succeed here.

Very nice chapter in a while, we're yet to see how Katakuri does against BoundMan, I have the feeling his body will react same as Doffy and Cracker…. With lots of pain.

Another marvelous chapter. Cant wait to see how luffy responds. Also may be unpopular but I like pudding here being so damn entertaining, we also are affirmed she liked lola so that begs the question if the elbaf story was actually played straight.

not sure i agree honestly, specifically for the upper echelon of fighters. luffy has used hawk gatling twice on katakuri to no avail (what looks like no blocks and just "soaking" it up).

The punches were hitting as if Luffy doesn't know how to use Haki, I assume Katakuri was making those holes there since he knew where the punches will land. Similar to when WB stabbed Kuzan.
