Thing is that togashi's characters need the spotlight to shine, and even then it isn't certain that they will be liked, see pufu, gentrhu, or cheeta guy.
Hiatus x Hiatus III: Goodnight, Sweet Princes
-
-
But who doesn't need the spotlight to shine ? What is the spotlight in the end ? And personally, I like Pufu and Cheetah.
-
Fred, the octopush fishman that was part of the sun pirates. Morgan the seagul man who runs an empire of news coos, Charlotte "the face of mercy" Yuen, Dr. Blackbeard MD., and so forth.
The only characters that have made me stop and think "ok, I might care for you" are queen Oito, the sass talking maid, the tsundere prince(ss), and the muscle loving bodyguard, these being the ones that we know more about. Just doing "look at all these names and faces" without a cohesive factor between them, and no actual introduction.
I'd say that togashi had done a better job with the Pariston/Beyond crew or the popular hunters that almost got Netero's seat, what's the deal with all those weirdos? These bodyguards, and mobsters, and cultists?, a parade of burocrats that won't be interesting until 2 years from now, or 10 chapters pass, whatever happens first.
-
Introducing a bunch of characters is meaningless if you don't put the slightest thought in how they fit into the story. Not that Oda has never been guilty of this (lol Meadows) but most of the characters he introduces have at least some minor role to play in the story. Togashi just introduces a shitton of characters to pad out the volume.
-
and even then it isn't certain that they will be liked, see pufu, gentrhu, or cheeta guy.
Hey, that's a matter of personal taste. Pufu is my favorite HxH character, so…
-
Doing everything "with a purpose" and nothing else is also bad writting, yes Medaows was filler, and the only doflamingo crew non-family member with name was terrible (Kuin) or dispossed way before the arc (Disco), but these are needed to round out the cast and make the world more lived.
Say, the franky family, operativelly, they could have been just 5-7 mooks and the square sisters, and plotwise it would have been the same, but designing and naming some of these made water 7 more lived, same with the rookies crews, that people noticed the cat mink, the zombie like guy from Kid's crew, sachi and penguin a long time ago. Very different from "the yearbook" aproach that togashi takes.
-
I'm interested to see a Zodiac die. This would make Pariston and Gin react. And I wanna see how they'd react. I just wish they won't say "muh they were free blabla and they chose their path and bla bla bullshitt, they died–- That's life. #HardToBe-a-Hunter"

This is simply personal taste. HxH isn't lacking of charismatic characters after all. Here are a bunch of recent characters I've liked a lot the first time they appeared
Morena Prude
Halkenburg Keeni
Benjamin
Tserriednich
Theta
Babimyna
Beyond NeteroAlso, characters that I've liked after a certain event
Belerainte
Furykov
and probably more–- Update From New Post Merge ---

But–- it's only the beginning of the arc. And the few characters who died until now are the ones who basically had no development
Very random bodyguards (most didn't have a name or weren't introduced before their death), princess who only said one or two sentence and etcetera.I'm probably one of the only ones who believe that Togashi will not just kill all his characters. Also what happens to the bodyguards once the queen who hired them dies ? It seems like super-smart-and-extremely-thoughtful HxH-characters didn't think about that. That's a better way to end the game of thrones without dumbly killing everyone

This one had me lost until I went to Donquixote Pirates wiki entry. Yeah, completely forgot about her and that whole awkward event. Shame it didn't stay that way.
I have to admit, despite of having 0 expectations of ever seeing this part of HxH ever going anywhere, I actually ended liking some new characters. For example, at first I thought Furykov annoying and then he became my favorite new character. Togashi knows how to make interesting characters, but then that was never a problem with HxH.

It's hard to treat this as the beginning of an arc when it's been literally going on for like three years real time.

yeah, sure. Let's go through Oda's checklist for introducing side charachters:
1. Have them either be marines, part of a "family" (apparently every single pirate crew is a family now) or members of some kind of elite force
2. mess orribly with their body proportions
3. wacky hat
4. extravagant laughter -very important!
5. optional: a vague, pun-based devil fruit power they get to use for two panels tops
6. have them stay in the sidelines and shout "commander Marco!!" "Brother Dogtooth!!!!"… three times a chapter for the rest of the arc. <-- role in the story. Some masterful writing at work there.
I personally think that every single named charachter we were introduced to so far on the boat has had a precise purpose in advancing a plot point or in creating an obstacle for the main charachters to overcome, and every one made perfect sense in context.
-
Have to say… the most skilled mangaka at handling huge amounts of characters isn't Oda, Togashi or Kishi, is Tite.
You're fated to doom handling a premise, a dialogue, a plot and even a setting to them to make them walk the path. It's just too much for an author to check that and also care for the scene-writing for all of them. All of them fail, Togashi exceeds here only because we know that destruction is coming, but this is not good. Marineford was trash because he had to include Luffy on the pack and that is terrible, every chapter felt like ants running everywhere, pillars of both groups looking, and Luffy was an ant with the scent of the ant queen, ugh.
Tite excels above the rest because he cares for characters more than anyone else, and truly anything else... he was more interested in doing art rather than a story for mere WSJ.
-

Except for Chad. And Ichigo. And Orihime. And Ishida. And any human character.

Just because he treated them like shit, doesn't mean he didn't care about them.

Wasn't even serious.
He probably did care about them at first, though.

I don't understand being reductive as if to say Oda hasn't made tons of memorable side characters.

This is… quite the hot take. His insistence on trying to juggle basically all of his characters is one of the major reasons Bleach turned to shit. Dude really would've benefitted from learning that many of his characters weren't as important as he thinks they are. Honestly though, should've seen it coming since the Soul Society arc.

lol at trying to take jabs at Oda for the sake of defending Togashi, especially with this completely false sarcastic comment that every pirate crew is now a family, when we were just introduced to the beast pirates who have no signs of sharing familial bonds with each other.
and while your desription doesn't fit any character in One Piece whatsoever, I'll try to make a similar checklist for Togashi's side character:1. Have them monologue and talk at least three pages worth of speech bubbles, and also keep whatever they say completely irrelevant to the overall plot.
2. Waste panel time that could've been used to develop characters that appear to have shreds of personality on these unimportant fodder.
3. Give them the same black suit so that nobody could recognize who they're when they're drawn far away.
4. A pretty complicated ability that needs certain conditions to be activated, and ends up being used once. And that's if they are nen users at all, do not forget that most of the body guards are unaware of what nen is.
5. Kill them once you can't figure out how they can contribute to the story anymore (bonus if it happens offpanel,) which often happens soon because all characters are unimportant.
6. Give them horrible names so that it becomes even harder to remember, as if their one note personality and same-y designs weren't enough. -

He seems like he cares about creating them, he has no idea how to use them after that.

Four years. This arc has been running for four years.
And if you want to go back to the ACTUAL start of the arc, chapter 340, where the Dark Continent and Beyond Netero were introduced, (in an effort by Togashi to have a volume not end in a way that everyone would assume the series was over) that actually officially started the arc, (before Togashi's longest hiatus) then this arc has been going for six years now.
One Piece was just wrapping up Fishman Island at the time. Assassination Classroom hadn't even premiered yet.

Didn't believe you at first but sure enough, after looking it up, near enough six years.
That's pretty shocking if you ask me.

Well another way to look this would be Berserk series…
! Caska's mind collapsed at 1997. First chapter of One Piece series, Romance Dawn was published around same time.

That wasn't the only storyline that entire time. Lots of other arcs and things happened along the way. But yes, it's been a long time to get around to resolving that plot point. But the series is entering its home stretch final decade probably, so…
Berserk has really good art at least.
@Jaime:"Some people visited Togashi during the Jump show. Togashi said that many people have told him that the extended publication for HxH is too serious. Togashi is afraid that he will not see the end. He wants to try to solve this problem."
Next chapter the boat blows up killing Ging, Kurapika, Hisoka and all the spiders.
-
There is no denying that Togashi is lazy sob but I am just happy for whatever we get… after all I would rather have 50 chapters of HxH than 500 chapters of Fairy Tail, even if its just amount of content. Hunter x Hunter could had ended at chapter 339 easily but I am happy for what we get.
There is a lot to criticize though, I am just now getting hang of Princes and their personalities/motives but Kurapika and bodyguard stuff is way too convoluted for me to follow as of now...

I agree with a couple of your points too.
My point was that I don't think Oda is the best comparison for that matter. The sarcasm was just meant to lighten the tone, i don't feel like being too serious when discussing action shonen mangas.

Spiders vs Hisoka vs The Mafia vs the Princes vs the Zodiacs vs Leorio never appearing. -
I do not dislike the complexity of the plot, but I'm starting to be fed up by all these psychos. Especially the Spiders, a.k.a. the most boring characters after Hisoka (excluding Chrollo maybe).
I'm glad Mizaistom was in this chapter though
-
This totally reminds me of A Fistful of Dollars, but without Clint Eastwood.
-

So… Yojimbo?
-
I don't think there is anyone playing the No Name role here.
-
Was I the only one who saw that scar as a smile for a second?
!
-
The scar looks like a tattoo. It's too clean
-
I really can't wait for Togashi to kill most of these recently introduced characters in the most anticlimactic fashion ever. He loves doing that. Especially if they are in a group.
Remember the shadows beast? The 10 mafia don? The assassins group which Kurapika joined? Most of the Greed Island players? Pokkle & his friends? The hunters that were hunting down Hisoka?Shalnark & Kortopi?
And the list goes on.
-
Turns out Hisoka isn’t on the boat, but set a time bomb on it and makes it sink, killing off all the spiders and kurapika and all the princes in the process. Maybe some survive, come for revenge, gon and killua rejoin the story. Very togashi.
-
I'd rather Gon and Killua stay gone and Leorio become the focus for the next arc.
-
You mean the dark continent ? There is no way Gon and Killua won't be part of this arc. Kilua will basically finally take his head out of his ass and realize that his little sister's "ability" is from the dark continent. He will then ask his grandpa to come with him and so will Silva. Gon will just go there because all his friends are heading this way, lol
-
I never got the appeal of Leorio. He was always pretty annoying to me when he was around and I can't think of anything he did worthy of people wanting him to return to the story. Punching Gin can't be the only factor, can it?
-

Maybe the fact that he’s had the least development out of all the characters would be the culprit? Hmmmmm
-
Leorio is easily the most relatable/human character in the series, he's a normal guy with flaws and aspirations and he's overall just a genuine character in a world that's pretty grim.
Also how can you not love his character ? He's the embodiment of a good friend.
-
All I remembered feeling was annoyance when he was on screen. I didn't really want more of him. I didn't find him all that relatable.
Zushi and Canary ware characters I found more relatable and wish they were brought back lol.
-

Oh, my feelings about Kurapika.
Spiders approaching into the spotlight now, thanks Togashi. Hope that time invested will make a lot of developments to the princes war.
-
yeh that's basically this. Leorio's fans consider that his character is one of the few that is relatable in this manga.
I'd like to see more of him. Because except from being Mr.Nice-guy, he hasn't been shown to be much more. Despite being one of the 4 "main" characters and having his "dream" set back in the boat at the beginning of the manga (wants to cure and help people eventually needs money to do so).Zushi and Canary ware characters I found more relatable and wish they were brought back lol.
These characters have been on the spotlight for a moment, but Togashi totally bumped them off the story afterwards. It's typical Togashi I guess.
I'd like to see more of them though.
Zushi was portrayed as a potential "rival" at first, then got trashed by Gon and Kilua's potential. And basically ended up being there to make the main cast look great.
Canary was shown to have a somewhat special bound with Kilua, and then–-- well, then nothing. We never saw her again....
fucku togashi. Try to keep some continuity in your work ! -
@Shobu:

Yeah I don't care about Kurapika either lol. This arc has been the worst for me lol.
The Spiders and Biscuit are so far the only characters I have an interest in this arc. Adding a million others hasn't changed that. Especially since they're all dressed similar and their names are among wall of texts that make me lose focus, it's not a good mix.
Yeah I mean Togashi does build up these interesting characters from time to time. But they either get placed aside or horribly murdered.
-

I never said I hated him. He too is my favorite in the series.
-
Am I the only one who wants all the spiders dead
-
I want some of the spiders to somehow get into the room Kurapika is protecting (maybe during the nen training) and everything go to shit.
-
Where can we get Togashi's comments in the Jump ? Mangastream isn't publishing them anymore

I just follow the official Shonenjump Facebook page. They post them there too.
HUNTER×HUNTER|YOSHIHIRO TOGASHI
I bought the Garasu wo Ware! and Bright Burning Shout CDs in Shibuya. The excitement I feel on the way home is always great. -
I'd rather Gon and Killua stay gone and Leorio become the focus for the next arc.
Whats so interesting about him that would necessitate an entire arc devoted to him.
Gon and Killua were on a journey of self discovery.
Kurapika is on journey of vengence and closure.
Leorio is..a decent guy who became a hunter just for the money.
-
Basically, Togashi had no idea wtf he was doing when he introduced him. At least Gon was looking for something, Kilua was a killer and Kurapika seeked vengeance. But Leorio is that guy who studied medicine for 2years, and somehow has been "recruited" by Cheadle to assist the medical team. Like, ffs, someone who studied medicine for 2years is nothing. It takes a decade to become a doctor… The guy has nothing to do in this ship. At least say that he is anyhow special. Just give him something Togashi ! but nope, he's just nice and friendly. oh, and he only unlocked nen very recently.
