6/10
Just as a reminder . Only four more to go
(i wish more would happen in a chapter)
11 this time, believe!
Hmm, maybe it's been a while but isn't nen supposed to take a lot longer to learn? How are all these chumps and their nen beats gaming the system so much? Kind of feels unearned for all the princes
They all basically had nen powers forced on them and didn't go through it the same way that we've seen everyone else learn it. Having a nen beast isn't really the same thing as the nen powers we've seen before though and even if they've learned to control their nen beast more or less that doesn't really say much about their ability to use nen like a hunter can. You even have some of them (like the girl with the tunnel) not know how to control their powers and some not even aware of their nen beast.
The ants all learned Nen within a couple hours as well. Though their lack of experience and practice with it was one of their major weaknesses… such as the Cheetah guy who made a premise based around never being caught.
I am loving the amount of detail and thought Togashi has put into this arc so far.
None of the characters are dumb and each of them has motivations that make sense. I like that the guards are not treated as expendable canon fodder but instead, each has been shown to possess qualities that make them worthy of being the guards to the Princes.
I thought it was funny that the Two Princes were actually in court. It was a very out of place real-world event that made it stand out from the madness of Nen and Nen beasts.
I loved the scene with the Prince trying to figure out the limitation of her abilities. It seemed like a peek into Togashi's thought process when he's coming up with abilities.
I am excited to see how Tsenderic evolves from here. He'll be a great antagonist to the Hunter Association. I'm thinking he'll end up forming a deal with the Phantom Troupe in the future of the arc.
All in all this was a very immersive and enthralling chapter. In lesser hands, this arc would not be this good.
Heck I hate to say it but I don't think even Oda could be this good. Togashi has him beat in the storytelling department for sure.
Unfortunately, I know Togashi will end up dissapointing me very soon when he takes another 2 year hiatus.

I love that too, but like many, I'm afraid lots of characters will just suddenly die and all the details will turn out to be pointless in the end.

Brace yourself for Tserriednich vs Gin. An even more mindfucking fight than Hisoka vs Chrollo. This time it will include quotations from Hegel and be somehow relevant to their abilities and the fight

I don't mind if they die at all actually. I'm just loving the journey. Togashi could have been lazy and simply had other characters commenting about how the Guards were elite and special and leaving it at that. But instead he's chosen to show us why this guys are being entrusted with the lives of the Princes.
Even if they die, its simply because they are out of their depth and not because the story needed cannon fodder.
I hope we get to see Gin fight but I am thinking it should be against Chrollo since their both Nen ability copycats. Should make for an insanely tactical match.
Parriston vs Tsenderric will be the battle of the psychopaths.

Gin's hatsu ability isn't even about copying other's techniques. It's just something he's good at. His hatsu or anything about his nen hasn't even been displayed yet. In other words, he's totally haxed.
But I like the idea of Gin fighting Chrollo. Not because of their somewhat similar abilities, but because I don't want to see Hisoka vs Chrollo again. I don't even know what I'm supposed to be hyped for honestly. It's basically gonna be "wow Chrollo lost because nen is so complex and this time the conditions weren't the same. nen zo smart" we get it.
Parriston vs Tsenderric will be the battle of the psychopaths.
It would be fun, but it's too soon for either of them to die. I mean, they can fight though
There is a love triangle to be had between the 4th prince, Chrollo(spiders) and Kurapika.
This chapter had the weakest Objection! I've seen in my life.
If anyone care, hunter x hunter celebrate its's 20th anniversary. The series started on March 3, 1998.
And the series has been on hiatus for nearly 14 years in total.lol
What do you think about Nice Guy prince? #9 i believe, the one writing letters to the king in this chapter. So far he was portratied as the enlightened one. Given that he's pretty sure to die a gruesome death, will Togashi play it straight with hime being the one good guy and be a martyr of some kind, or will later be revealed to actually being another asshole wearing a facade and then severely punished? the first option would be better, since we already have a pretty big roster of pieces of shit among the royal family, but a cheap twist is always tempting.
i really liked the premise of kurapika starting in the worst possible position and having to work up to his goal while juggling between political power dynamics and crazy murderers, by now that i'm invested in the whole succession race thing his parts really drag down the overall hype.
Kacho is interesting now, glad that Togashi puts Senritsu on the spotlight with her, it was her time… after Hanzo and Biscuit, she's quite likeable.
Tsen is like "hmm, eau de parfum, what's this? i'm that charismatic?" Liked it too!
Kurapika doing shit again, kill him now! :getlost:
The trial it wasn't needed, i think. Wait for the cruise to end, or ask the king... not right now. An impossible mission with Camille would have been much better.

This week the phantom troupe gets the spotlight
That girl who had a fetish for human parts died?
I guess Kurapika got rid of her.

Wait a minute, Death Note is part of the canon now?
Did Togashi just introduce yet another group with its own mysterious goal (the mafia guys) ?
Oh for fuck's sake :(
I know it's been a while since it happened but I just want to remind everyone Hisoka killing two of the troupe off screen was an absolute bullshit writing decision.

Of course some people might defend it as bold and brave and unconventional and not a total waste of two really potentially interesting characters.
Wait a minute, Death Note is part of the canon now?
Well DB is,so…
And the track suit is explained Phinks is a slav.

Only Shalnark was potentially interesting.
Only Shalnark was potentially interesting.
I dunno, I found Kortopi quite interesting as well, even just for his mysterious appearance and support abilities.
Was not expecting a full run down of the Troupe's numbers in this chapter, very pleasantly surprised.
I also like that Shizuku and Bonolenov want to stick with Chrollo since they've analysed their own abilities when it comes to tackling Hisoka.
It's just always nice to have strong characters still be able to be analytical and admit their weaknesses.
This is probably one of my favourite chapter this round as there are barely any dialogue! The tropes are also way more interesting than all the bodyguards that no one cares about.
The art is starting to get really shaky.
Why is Illumi in the trope? Honestly feel very random. You might as well spare Shalnark & Kortopi. We already have Kalluto in the group.Do we need another Zoldyck? And the most important Zoldyck is not even in this arc.
The mafia groups were actually mentioned few chapters back but I was hoping Togashi wasn't going to introduce them because we totally are not lacking characters in this arc.:getlost:
Neon died? That explain why Kurapika is the young boss.
Wait, how is Melody able to answer Kachou? I mean, she can hear Kachou's messages because she has super hearing, but how Kachou hear Melody answers?
Anyways, I really need to do some re-reading. I was actually surprised when I saw Illumi as part of the troupe and that seems the kind of thing I should remember.
Also, the future reading ability belonged to the girl Kurapika worked for in York Shin, right? Hm.

And he wasn't. He just become one now on request of Hisoka.
Because apparently that's what Hisoka wants.

It's a toy that produces a high pitch frequency that adults can't hear, so they are just doing regular morse code.

This one is a new one, Hisoka probably hired him before or right after his fight with Kuroro.
Also, the future reading ability belonged to the girl Kurapika worked for in York Shin, right? Hm.
Yes, his father had already given the control over Nostrade family. The point is did Kura had to put her to sleep?
It's a toy that produces a high pitch frequency that adults can't hear, so they are just doing regular morse code.
Oh yeah, that was shown one chapter ago. No excuses here.
Cool chapter, I'm interested in the mafia now because they don't seem like the nen-less, clueless fodder now.
So Neon died offscreen, or Kurapika used the bullshit dolphin on her and somehow that breaks the thief book.
The phantom tropue are supposed to be 13 don't they? We are still missing one, even if they didn't fill up Shalanark and Kurotopi's slots, Paku dind't as well?
If they give Hisoka's slot to Kaluto, then they are going as "first vacant first replaced" as Hisoka admited to never being actually part of the group, so the 4th slot was vacant for longer than the 11th.
And why was it bullshit for Hisoka to kill two people without nen offscren? He had motive and oportunity.
For those who are wondering Hisoka likely had Illumi join the troupe because he views this current situation with the PT to be one with a high chance of him dying so he may as well use this situation to also try and get his death match with Illumi. He's basically trying to kill two birds with one stone here.
I'm sorry…But did Illumi say he and Hisoka are engaged?
For me anything else in chapter just got dwarfed by that little blurb lol.
Well, they have a relationship that will keep them entwined until death do them appart, so I think the marriage comparison was fair.
… also Hisoka was shown having boners from watching small boys getting pumped up, we are way past the point that kind of line should surprise us.

S… So ? Are you suggesting that Hisoka is a pedophile ? WTF
Hisoka lost his last fight because he bit off more than he could chew, which he admitted, and now he's just going to randomly throw in a comparably tough opponent like Illumi while trying to fight off all the phantom troupe? Either he didn't learn anything from that fight or he has a trick up his sleeve for Chrollo this time. I feel like this death contract has to be fake and Hisoka is going to use both Zoldycks to help keep track of and ambush the Spiders.
S… So ? Are you suggesting that Hisoka is a pedophile ? WTF
What, you didn't knew? Hisoka was shown getting sexually aroused by Gon. I mean, he got an erection once that's not the kind of thing that carries any ambiguity.
But it's not that he is technically a pedophile, he doesn't find kids sexy. He is turned on by powerful people with a strong drive… even if they are kids. There's a nuance.
... Although there is that scene where he keeps staring at Gon and Killua butts, I don't know how to explain that.

Shalnark and Kurotopi? Kuro isn't a fighting type guy so you can just assume he got dispatched easily. That fight would have been one sided.
As for Shalnark, I kind of agree, even though he never really seemed like a good fighter himself. The antenna thing made him strong, but since it was auto-piloted, he was probably very predictable in terms of movements.

But that's the thing. He was turned on by his potential. Battle junkie characters are kind of a trope. We just never seen one with such… physical manifestation of it.
So they split up while being hunted by a monster clown. Like doomed characters in a Horror movie.

He was ambushed just as he was asking Kuroro to return his power to him. He didn't have his hatsu at that moment, and maybe didn't even had basic nen.
Dumbass-Kuroro has been at the horror movie school for searching things. Yepp, let's split up. Let's do that mothafucka !
He didn't even care about Shizuku and Bonolenov. He basically told everyone to fuck off. But thankfully these two were witty enough to acknowledge that they can't really fight Hisoka.
Cool chapter, I'm interested in the mafia now because they don't seem like the nen-less, clueless fodder now.
Everyone was fodder 5 chapters ago, but now everyone can use nen. What a clusterfuck.

But does it explain why he's the leader of the Nostrade clan now ?

It's probably just bullshitt that they die off-screen–- only that. Like, I don't care. But apparently some do.

This is common knowledge in the fandom. There is nothing to wtf about.

Also, you thought a succession war, Hisoka vs the Troupe, Gin vs Pariston and Kurapika vs Tserriednich was enough ? Brace yourself for another war against 4 mafia clans in the the three first floors
I was expecting that the Zodiacs vs. Beyond and Phantom Troupe to be more or less on hold untill we reached the Dark Continent, but apparently the Troupe will be invading the Succession War sometime soon (as I recall they were after some treasures the princes brought with them). That seems to be interesting.
For me, this is already one of my favourite arc of HxH. I'm absolutely loving the claustrophobic feeling of being inside a ship with Nen Beasts taking out one person after another. I half expect that Melody's and Kurapika's hopes of taking the Princes out of the ship to be monumentally frustrated. In my opinion I think we'll see a lot of the Princes die before long. With the exception, maybe, of the baby and Tserriednich.
Heck, I half expect that it will be revealed that Gon and Killua are on the ship! Everyone seems to be aboard now. All the plots are locked together in one place.

How? This arc is literally SpeechBubblexSpeechBubble, with most of it being bloated and overexplained, and waaaay too many characters to keep track. In my mind its perhaps the worst arc in HxH so far.
Oh boy, it's getting complicated now. It's about time. There weren't enough named characters to remember.
So I imagine at some point we're going to get the spiders vs Hisoka and Kurapika will probably find out the spiders are on the ship at some point too. I feel like all of this is buildup to some massive war that once it starts it won't stop until 90% of everyone on the ship is dead. Also I don't remember if it was said before this chapter (it probably was at some point) but I don't remember an older sibling of Killua being in the spiders so that's interesting to me.
At the risk of sounding blasphemous, this has not been my favorite arc either. It's very confusing and hard to follow (mostly due to release schedule). But it's also the worst offender of the "Show, not Tell" aspect of visual art. Maybe it's because I watched the anime and jumped into the manga afterwards, so I'm not used to Togashi's style, but outside of the Hisoka and Phantom Troupe aspects, I have not been enjoying this arc. I also wasn't a huge fan of the Chimera Ant arc, so idk maybe it's just me, but I absolutely loved everything that came before that in the anime. It mostly feels like he's dishing out huge amounts of exposition via text, without it appearing immediately relevant. Like it's so much info at once, and I have a hard time figuring out what of it is important, and what is extraneous info. This arc would probably benefit from waiting and reading the whole arc in one go

It's pretty much standard HxH. At least that's how it has been since Meruem turned into a philosopher or what.
Except for the amount of characters, everything else is ordinary HxH.
It's not my fav arc (yet ?) but it has the potential to rival with the election arc and the chimera ant arc. The two best arcs for me. The rest is just common shonen manga for me (except a few things here and there).

Heck, I half expect that it will be revealed that Gon and Killua are on the ship! Everyone seems to be aboard now. All the plots are locked together in one place.
My personal theory is that they will both join the ship thanks to Knov's ability (we know that he will appear midway to bring supplies to the ship)
He was ambushed just as he was asking Kuroro to return his power to him. He didn't have his hatsu at that moment, and maybe didn't even had basic nen.
I forgot about that. Other reason why turning that massacre into a chapter wasn't needed.
Hey the mafia know about nen since Yorknew, they are fodder but not fooooodder, they are not on the level of the hunters we follow but hey, it's something.
And while I don't think Ilumi's "engagement" is anything but Hisoka's joke idea of a contract, but is hard to tell where the sex tension ends and the murder boner begins with the clown.

Hopefully with Alluka so they wish for this arc to end in the next 10 chapters.

I think he meant "assassination payment" and contact by 'engagement ring'. I have a feeling that I read it somewhere before but I can't remember whether it is in HxH or another manga.

Another translation from reddit spoiler
Soo, my name is Illumi. I'm the eldest son of the Zoldyck family. Killua and Kalluto are both my little brothers. I've joined the Spider this time as per Hisoka's request. He and I had this give-and-take relationship, but we always thought that ultimately one of us would kill the other. Now is the time for that to come true. Hisoka's requested assassination target was himself. We have an engagement ring/promise (pre-nuptial agreement) where if he dies, I will get my remuneration. Both of us are serious, so I'm not told where he is.
It's a funny little metaphor, especially when you consider they are stuck in the agreement "till death does them part".
