First two years with out a break, don't think it's particularly unique on new publications.

Two years without a break probably fucked him up for life. Yikes.
Yes, two years without a break sounds awful, for us that are well aware of the mangaka schedule. But like I said, going no breaks for the the first 2 years seem like the usual for recent WSJ, - Black Clover, Jujutsu, Kimetsu, Chainsaw man, Neverland - followed it.
My opinion is that his breaks are not completely - only mostly - related to physical fatigue. He seems to be feed up with the series, the passion for character interaction is mostly gone, the fight scenes are even harder to follow now with the PLUS ULTRA power creep, his pacing is all over the place times speed running and times dwelling, his narrative choices for character arc are...questionable. My take is that he is fatigued by his own creation, drawing the chapters became not only physically draining, but mentally and emotionally too.
@pariston_hill I don't even know how Oda has been able to go over 25 years with all the crazy shit manganka endure.
@Johnny-B-Decent I guess it depends from mangaka to mangaka Toriyama went the full DB without a break, Araki only took his first break after 10 years, and from Part I-IV he only took 6 breaks. Osamu never took a break in Kochikame's 40 years.
And there's mangaka labour rights champion Togashi, and his "followers" such as Hiroe and Hirano.

Toriyama got a 20 day vacation at one point, according to the author note for Volume #16. https://www.kanzenshuu.com/manga/tankobon/vol-16/
Not like it really helped. Toriyama now can no longer use physical ink to draw because he breaks out in hives due to how long he did a weekly serialization.

I would say it's entirely physical. He already estimated early on that he had ideas for around 40 volumes. It's just that he could never really tackle everything, and his frequent sick episodes have taken its toll going by how his chapters barely overcome 15 pages.
@access-timeco good luck convincing the Japanese to share that "privilege" and exclusivity enjoyed by the senpai/senior of the number one franchise in the country with new greenhorn authors convinced by their society to give their lives for their career/company/country.
JUMP always kills itself and its own series because of their stupid pride and refusal to change. I've lost count of the number of fucked up endings that happened due to author burnt out. Also, the TOC system is dated and flawed. I've also lost count of the number of potentially great series that got axed because of the stupid popularity poll.
I read Bakuman and was fuming at some parts because why the hell is the editorial department on payroll when it acts on the whims of the general public? There should be some balance but there isn't. Even the authors of Bakuman who worked closely with editorial were never able to give a semblance of what makes a good editor over there.
CSM and Ruri was 100% an exception, with the former bordering on certified insanity and the later blowing up because it was anti-jump. Both blew up to insane highs and it is evident that JUMP steered and managed none of that. Not to the extend that you can say they blew it up.
You see authors like KnY, JJK and BnHA trying to end or rush an ending in spite of how successful they are and how they should have some sway. But they don't use that sway so then was it really their fault? Yes-no. No, not really. It's a societal thing and a problem down to the very roots of the Japanese culture.
Fujimoto had to leave JUMP, despite the second half of CSM being the same level or arguably milder (in violence, gore, sex) than the first half so that he can fuck off from the insane schedule. Togashi own the rights to HxH and refused to back down, and was STILL permanently damaged physically because of the workload.
Case in point, I'm not saying that it's an individual responsibility thing when your very culture and identity is wrapped up on your ability to deliver. Horikoshi feeling pressured and not pulling a Togashi or just straight up asking for more breaks is a very understandable perspective.
However, I do believe that the consumers as a whole have little to no ability to change or impact their work schedule or the norm. Face it, most readers wouldn't boycott JUMP for not giving the authors a break. Most communities become very annoying during break weeks.
You might think to yourself that the online forums and comments section showed some semblance of empathy/willingness to do so, but they and we are not the primary market. It's the very-on-schedule and I'll-resign-from-my-job if the train is late for 2 minutes Japanese.
Change can be introduced: eg; run double the series so a series runs once every 2 weeks but ask yourself sincerely if you genuinely give a shit about all the other series except for that two or three that is gold. That's the cold hard truth and why even if you have more sway + leeway, the popularity of your series in a magazine with other series means that you will have, impressed upon yourself by the members of your community, a higher degree of responsibility.
I'm not saying that bi-weekly or three weeks schedule is not a good idea. but simply explaining why JUMP sees the success of the serial model.
There is a whole economy and culture to the serial magazine publishing industry. It works because it is the Japanese who still habitually purchase paper and print such as newspaper.
No other medium, and I shit you not, not even youtube channels with active subscribers, can pull out a weekly release for prolonged years, even decades, on this planet at this quality.
If JUMP schedule and workload is not insane, what is.
This reads off very anti-JUMP and anti-editorial but it really isn't, Ruri dragon and CSM has shown that JUMP like every other company is open to the universal language of Money. And good editors do exist such as the ones who hard carried Naruto. There has to be some personal accountability and to go against the norm on the author's own end too but then there's a plethora of issues such as how Japan as a society works making it very hard to do so. Thee's also the fact that JUMP is the shining beacon if you ever want to make money off your manga is the holy grail for thousands of artists and that maybe if the industry isn't so shit and we pay our creators more, self-publishing might be more commonplace but its never going happen.
Chapter spoilers
People are losing faith in the hero system sure means that there are problems with the system that need to be addressed and corrected, right?
LOL Nope, Bad PR.

Next Video: 10 Things You Missed Watching Gentle Save U.A.
Glad Shiketsu's back. I doubt they have enough power to take down AFO but it'll be fun to see how close they get.
A perfect panel, from the cartoonish style to the use of empty space. No notes
I haven't laughed that hard at MHA in a while. From one panel.
I turned it into a Discord emote from the second I saw it.
Also, I cringed more at the boomer trying to translate Camie's dialogue than the dialogue itself.
"No cap: A distinct lack of a hat? Who knows, honestly."
I can't tell if they're just making a joke or something,
because my God, I'm 31 and I know what fucking "no cap" means.
Cap/capping = Lies. Falsehoods. Fakery. Bullshitting. Usopp.
No cap = Straight up. No lies. Honesty. Being for real.
I genuinely thought that (almost) the ENTIRE internet knew this.
I actually never heard of No Cap until now.
So that was really an English editor doing slang translation? That wasn't in the original Japanese?
In any case, Urban Dictionary is your friend, people.

Apparently this was the same sort of sland used in the Japanese.
@MDL
This is a pretty accurate translation of how it was handled in the Japanese text: Camie says some slang, and the 'editor' slang translation sort of gives up after a while in frustration, cuz they're not down with the kids.
@MDL that would be nice time for CCC's weekly translation analysis, but MHA fans harassed him out of twitter.
I would've been very surprised to see CCC at fault here, glad he's not.
@1234entak Thank you for this clarification.
All is good now. It makes sense now.
@1234entak From the JP raws, Hori did the same thing. Using notes on the side of the page, and sorta giving up. Which is exactly Hori's intention with Camie, she doesn't just talk with very much slang, she talks in a broken slang way bordering nonsense.
I really like fumikage. Always gave me Shikamaru vibes, not just due to their similar lowers.
Hum...is just me or the only relevant students so far have been Deku/Todoroki/Bakugo and the members of the school festival band?

Baby Tokoyami! So cute!
Yes! Avenge Mushroom Girl, Tokoyami!
Feels great to be this excited about MHA again. This is what I was hoping to see: a major dogpile on AFO with the heavy hitters getting their strikes in.
We've all been waiting to see Tokoyami do a major dark attack.
This was good to see. The Bane speech in full effect, lol.
@pariston_hill That's really awesome, props to CCC for conveying that humor (hope to see you back here someday T_T)
Growing up with the internet slang and trends in the early 2000s, I never thought I'd get to a point where I'd start to feel behind. I think the first time I felt confused was when one of the new hires at my job mentioned that their kid started saying things were "lit". And then I started to notice things online like "based", "no cap frfr", and nowadays I'm noticing a lot of chapter comments on Viz, Twitter, and Mangaplus just being about "mid" and having "rizz" and "peak fiction" I kinda start to roll my eyes for some reason.
So yeah I appreciate the humor in the note giving up, some days I feel like I also cannot keep up so I'll just stick with my "lols" and "ww 草" like an oldie hahah
I'm starting to suspect that every student in 1-A is going to get some kind of moment against one of the villains. Which is good although I wonder what Sato is going to end up doing giving his total lack of anything important to the plot.
Actually, now that I just checked it seems like Sato, Ojiro and Sero were litrally sent off to fight fodder away from everyone else. So scratch that, maybe those three will literally not do anything...
Talk no Jutsu came back to help. My guy Gentle is the highlight of the arc so far.
Lady Nagant too? She is so clutch.
AFO is pissed hahaahahaa
Light of Baldur. I like this name
Colour volumes are out! I think they look pretty good, so I put together an album of highlight spreads: https://imgur.com/a/RZizBS0
Feels right in line with Hori's colouring style, and they play with the lighting of a lot of scenes to change the atmosphere, like warm sunsets or the moody sepia of Shiggy's hideout. I'm definitely satisfied it's on the high-effort end of Shueisha's colour releases.
@Captain-M it sure is a high end effort (heh pardon me), and I glad it got this treatment. But I personally disliked some of the warm colour backgrounds, even if I understood why they where chosen, they are too bright(?) too saturated(?) i don't know exactly.
Deus ex Gigantomachia
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1015545
I'm just glad he's back. I'd be strange for a powerhouse like Giganto to sit out the final arc.
Yeah and I think this is a good way to bring him back. Although I do kind of hope we flashback over to where machia was, given there are several of the main class at that location who haven't done anything yet.
Next, AFO has something in Machia to dispel the effects of Shinso's ability.
I'm looking forward to the climax of this fight where the heroes defeat Baby AFO.
The Benjamin Button quirk will be All for One's undoing
Sudden 2 week break.
Hori should retire once finished.
I'm getting really worried for him. Not just frequent breaks, but long ones too. I wouldn't mind if the finale was put on hiatus so he could rest properly.
I really enjoyed seeing Tokoyami unloading on AFO. That was really cool.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the giganto situation genuinely unfolded.
I think its likely that Hori never fully recovered his physical health that last two week break, and that his current physical ailments may continue to carry on effecting him until he takes a longer break.
Yeah. I don't see him doing another weekly manga series. A bi-monthly or monthly maybe but not Shonen Jump. Or he could just write scripts for MHA movies or a post series and let someone else pen it.
Best Girl getting best Attack

Great to see Ashido get her time to shine. Now will Mineta get his? I'm guessing he's on Gigantomachia's back with Kirashima and Shinso.
There's something about the way Horikoshi portrays Ashido I can't quite describe. She has acid powers, a really strong quirk, but I don't feel it's acknowledged enough. Yes, she had a good scene but, I don't know, it's like if Storm from X-Men was Ashido and Horikoshi gave her a couple good scenes without acknowledging just how ridiculously powerful her weather powers are. And instead of building her up into the powerhouse she can be she's dialed down until certain moments while talking about how weak she is.

I see your point, but not valid because Ororo is also busted without using her powers. And yes, had Mina been a male or a villain her quirk would be portrayed in the right amount of oh shit that's good.

Gentle's channel name is phenomenal.
So, the movie characters get cameos but not anyone from My Hero Vigilantes? Okay…
@Nectar Hori secretly hates Vigilantes because it did everything he could, but better.
