Bakugou is like if Russell Westbrook was an anime superhero.
My Hero Academia II - A true Hero
-
-
I would've been absolutely fine with Kacchan, but I am very into Dynamight. The title of Great Explosion Murder God is suitably over the top, as befitting of Bakugo.
-
It's not like the titles end up mattering anyway,
if someone calls out for Froppy they don't shout "RAINY SEASON HERO, OVER HERE"
They're gonna go with the shorter and easier main hero name, so Bakugo's title will barely ever get mentioned anyway.Dynamight good.
-
Almost forgot, I wonder if next chapter we will see how the heroes at the mansion are doing, since Redestro and most of the liberation army were there. I hope that at least Redestro and some of the commanders manage to get way, I really like some of their designs.
I mean, some already did get away from there, since they were following Machia´s path of destruction into a city. I doubt they will help Shiggy and the others though, since most likely they aren´t as fast as the giant.
-
! If Iida is truly the traitor, then Horikoshi has done a masterful job. I’m even more impressed with the fanbase who called it. The Compress - Oji connection was a theory pitched years ago… and ended up being true.

! Since when Iida is a suspect, and why the hell would he be in since Stain cripple the brother he idolizes? Compress better safe Machia.
-
Why the hell did I open that spoiler tag? I feel stupid.

! Iida loves his brother, but what if he’s less enamored with heroes?
! Shigaraki wanted to kill Stain too.
! Also… he’s the only uninjured party there. Mirio is fast, but not THAT fast. -
The conspiracy theorists seem to conveniently forget info.
! Following the Mr. Compress (Oh no he's hot) reveal, folks are trying to say he's Deku's father…Forgetting that Deku's father has a fire quirk. I swear anyone with slightly curly hair is going to be immediately assumed to be Deku's family lol. Also how random would that be? They've had like no interactions. And how redundant it would be. Don't need another villain related to a UA student.

! Do we even have a UA student connected to a villain? Oh yeah Touya Todoroki. The only other that seems plausible is Giran being connected to Aoyama. Or All for Dad for the extra Star Wars reference.

Ah, you beat me to it. I'ma post the video anyway. Also, I think some people are getting spoilers mixed up?

In this case this one, but it's not the first time I've seen r/bnha complaining about how we lost nuace in translation.

https://todomitoukei.tumblr.com/post/637049244544614400/japanese-vs-english-dabi-a-293-comparisonNuance is important, though! Close reading in Japanese may give one an entirely different outlook on what the story is conveying.
Character intent and psychology especially — which lend themselves to prediction and deeper interpretation of the work.
It’s okay if you don’t enjoy it. But those who theorize are mostly fans of close reading and analysis. I really enjoyed the post you linked, so thanks for sharing :)

There's a difference in understanding that certain nuances and speech patterns do not translate into english, and constantly coming with "you don't like/understand character X" because the official translation is sloppy and my biased analysis of character X speech pattern proves that.

I don’t think it’s about liking/disliking characters — that’s sort of a basic view that younger fans take and invest in with far too much emotional weight. I like CCC’s translation notes as well — but translating anything is really hard. And the person you linked to was actually correct on those comments… giving subtle nuance to the situation.
It makes me reanalyze Shoto and Dabi’s entire confrontation, simply because of the word choice. It changes my view of what may be the outcome here. The official translation makes it seem as though Dabi is Shoto’s final opponent... though this fan’s translation points to a future much more in line with my original prediction from May (of Shoto perhaps defecting due to empathizing with and understanding his brother).
-
I didn't mean exactly to point this analysis as a prime example. Is just that I'm a little fed up with those kinds of threads in r/bhna, actually I'm quite fed up with that board.
Twitter @redandblonde420 user is more of an example of my statement. It's cool and all that a individual that speaks japanese can read and have a different experience than the other readers, another is try to sell your interpretation as a truer experience than that provided form the official translator that can have contact with the editors to clear up doubts upon translating. -
The whole situation has just been nightmarishly chaotic and dragged on too long IMO. Makes it hard to care about anyone who died during it since we don't have a chance to catch our breath when there's still more action happening.
-
I don't think that I would need to read the bokus/atashis to understand that Natsu possibly dying and Dabi not caring is a total dealbreaker for someone like Shoto who has actual human emotions and was ready to abandon his justified anger because it was hurting him, then we saw when the family getting together how it was hurting his sister, and now we have the dark mirror of actual killing intent and becoming a charred mummy, and conspiring in the leveling of a city for the same justified anger.
I would love if they kicked endeavor out of their lives instead of what we got tho, but just like Bakugo joining the league was just not going to happen, not because "this is a shonen" but because the way that the plot and his character are going just makes no sense. That is why Kaminari gets pointed at the traitor, someone that integrates ideas like "fake heroes should be murdered in alleyways" and "quirk strenght is all that a person's value is" into their worldview could, someone who gets completelly broken down, without a decent support system could, like what could happen with Tokoyami. Hell, Uraraka with her original motivation of providing for her parents could (but I have a strong suspicion that her encounter with Toga and the full reveal of Hawks actions might finally give her some character development, and another reason for the hero path)
-
On the traitor front we have:
Tooru: Shaddy Invisigirl that we don't know near nothing aboutAoyama :Needed a support item since childhood, could be connected to Giran
Kaminari: Either, just to dumb and keeps updating locations on his social accounts or is a in deep spy.
All the rest doesn't make much sense.
And honestly, Gran Torino and Miruko should have died, one was donuted by Shigi and the other suffered a shit ton of series injuries. -
Miruko can live retired, but with good prosthetics and adjusting herself for her new limitations (or further the rabbit theme and just sacrificing ton of “paws” in combat, to the point of having a sidekick just to replace her leg) she could easily go back to work.
I don’t know anything about next week chapter to say about Gran Torino, but I doubt he’d be done off screen
-
Miruko has to pay the killings of poor John-chan and Mocha-chan.
Vigilantes 91
! Mr. Oguro should have opened and agency with Rappa and Tiger Bunny.

Agreed. The plot has no time to breath with all the surprises, reveals and twists from the people on both sides. Horikoshi is trying too hard to make things seem epic and it is getting out of hand. I don't think i am wrong to say that at this point many of us are more interested in the aftereffects this chaos will have on society as a whole instead of more set pieces.
-
Where do we go after this is certainly interesting
Originally I thought a devastating blow on the heroes side would have been fitting but it seems that the villains are not getting away now either.
I mean I believe a timeskip and a change of environment would make a heck more sense than going back to school curriculum.
Like I'm not sure if there's anything really meaningful or sustainable to teach when your students have just experienced quite possibly a scenario that is like what, the epitome of I'm fucked in a hero's career and going back to learn how to rescue civilians 101 is a far cry from fighting buildings obliterating monsters. -
Yeah… In terms of escalation, it does seem like we "jumped the Gigantomachia".

! Oh no he's hot. Give the retreat order Shigi.
-
! I honestly couldn't visually read what was going on for several panels this chapter
-
Glad that Mr Compress is finally getting his chance to shine, but it seems he won´t survive this arc… That sucks, I thought Twice would be their only loss this arc, killing Compress too seems too hasty.
Also, I really the league, but I think that Compress´s grandpa, being a modern robin hood and all of that, wouldn´t like seeing his grandson being pals with someone that wants to kill so many innocents. I guess he considers it a neccesary sacrifice, but still, unlike Redestro´s legacy that was already violent from the start, the king of thieves seemed to have a similar approach to Gentle´s no killing policy.
-
All decked up for chapter 300 I guess.
-
! I honestly couldn't visually read what was going on for several panels this chapter
Yeah I was struggling with quite a few of the action shots too. Recently I feel like the action has been quite clear and easy to follow as well, but it's never been Horikoshi's strongest attribute.
-
Giving a whole new meaning to "bringing your ass over".
-
So is Midnight dead? Because she looks pretty dead.
-
Nah. She's just in the Shadow Realm.
-
I totally forgot Midnight was around.
(But then again every hero in Japan is so..)

Vigilantes 91 Talk
I'm thinking a huge point of this flashback will be All Might and O'Clock meeting. AFO seems to be hiding from AM and O'Clock is good at investigating criminal organization so I can see O'Clock deciding to help All Might find AFO. Maybe O'Clock was the one who gave AFO's location to All Might and that was how the two fought the first time.My Hero Talk
Finally! We know what's up with Mr. Compress. Grats to everyone who guessed his connection to Harima. I don't see Compress dying though. As long as the League can escape, Mr. Compress can probably be saved. And still no word on the Re-Destro Fight.
-
I guess one Machia decided to bulldozer his way outta of the villa there's no more heroes in condition to fight the top brass of the PLF.
-
I guess one Machia decided to bulldozer his way outta of the villa there's no more heroes in condition to fight the top brass of the PLF.
Oh, yeah. I forgot about them. With Shiggy and most of the Commanders out of action I can see them getting an arc. No way is Horikoshi wasting Evil R2-D2.
-
I'm just shocked that Touya seemingly just won his fight with Shoto in just one panel. Like, I'm too used to Touya being a disappointing, lazy punk that it's weird seeing him just straight up win against the trained, if not younger, fire and ice prodigy. I guess it makes sense narratively, but still it feels weird that this guy has racked up all his wins in this arc.
Also, Shoto just took a straight up giant fire blast and didn't get incinerated. How does that work? Does Shoto have a resistance to fire outside of his own? Kinda weird.
-
Dabi became competent the moment he bleached his hair back.
The lesson here is that hair dye makes you dumb, like a modern twist of the Samson story.
-
Toya's flames were injuring Shoto, but we haven't seen him use his ice powers against his big brother. Maybe he was using the ice to lessen the imapct of the flames.
-
Yay! I guessed right on something for once. The thief connection for Compress.
I really don't think Horikoshi will kill him. I think he'll get saved and then he has to comment on being embarrassed for dramatic death speech.
-
Shiggy could easily have a heal others quirk, but considering who AFO is, and that the woulds are claimed in text as fatal, without a good surprise (or a bad one) I think he’s done. Remember that twice and magne are also dead.
Even if the heal self quirk could work and be transferred, And that being the distinction of AFO and shiggy as evil overlords (evil overlord may care) shiggy doesn’t seem to be in the condition to share one of his most important quirks right now.

A great read
In Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia, The author uses “quirks” and the consequences of quirks as allegory for societal issues that are concurrent and prominent in our real world.Whether Toga being an allegory of mental health that is subsequently ignored and repressed which later emerges and manifests negatively, or Spinner having to deal with discrimination and bigotry growing up to due to his appearance, to economical factors like Twice having to deal with the fact of being fired and being reduced to homelessness, Kohei Horikoshi takes our real world and exaggerates current social issues with the use of quirks.
It is a modern society not dystopian or utopian; it is a world with the failings of a modern society which is represented in the form of villains and the various causes one takes to become a villain. However by the time of the war arc I believe My Hero Academia turns into a cautionary tale of ignoring systemic flaws in your society.
Now what do I mean by this lets take our cast of colorful antagonists in the LoV Tomura Shigaraki, Himiko Toga, Shuichi Iguchi, Jin Bubaigawara, and Toya Todoroki, they are not the only Shigaraki, Toga, Spinner, or Twice. Himiko is not the first person to have there mental health there needs to use there quirk ignored and repressed nor is Twice the first person to commit crime to escape poverty(an unfortunate real phenomenon), or Spinner the first person to be looked down upon due to his appearance, they are individual representations of systemic issues.https://www.reddit.com/r/BokuNoHeroAcademia/comments/kd9via/a_cautionary_tale/
-
I don't really agree and I don't find the mental issues caused by, what is supposedly a reflection of our present society, well represented.
A lot of what fans perceive of this series seems to enjoy the notion of romanticising unhealthy habits or using the characters as a platform to stroke their negative traits to further push their own "perceived uniqueness" when all it does is further isolation.
This is, however, a good flag to rally under if people were to enjoy society shaming and victimising themselves over hard work and taking action. Because for sure a lot of the villains do a shit load of self justification that further proves my point.
There are always going to be minorities affected by societal and mental problems, who are trying their best.
But equally there are those who are jerks and self entitled groupies too. -
I just think is another take on the points I and Julie argue, that society is flawed but the heroes - our main POV - don't seem to acknowledge it's flaws.
-
Yeah, the comic–being a corporate product--really does seem to frame the 'villains' as being in the wrong. It's oddly 'libertarian' and Ayn Randy-esque. It argues that the villains are just 'lazy' and 'sore losers'. Meanwhile, the heroes (in HeroAca) and the police (in reality) and corporations–supposedly public institutions--in reality work solely for the wealthy and corporations. Where was All Might demanding no out-of-pocket health services or housing? Where is All Might reasoning that a margialized people--the disabled, gender, sexuality, romance and racial minorities--will only logically turn to violence when their society is violent against them?
HeroAca is very concerned with not rocking the boat of the status quo and making its readership angry. That's a big, big mark against it.
-
There's a time and place for stories like that. Superhero comics aimed at kids ain't it.
Note I'm not saying superhero stories aren't appropriate for it, you've got your Miracleman and Watchmen and some superman stories that deal with exactly that… but the aimed at 10 year olds power battle stories? Not so much.
-
I not wanting some deep dissection of the genera, I just want someone of the heroes to acknowledged that maybe punching criminals super hard is not doing much to stop them.
Like, we learned the first hero laws and definition for villains in Vigilantes, for a series called My Hero Academia, we know squat about the system besides that heroes are a mix of Swat and Idols.Like what are the legal boundaries of hero work? If propriety damage is done in arresting who pays the repairs, the hero agency? What if some propriety of great sentimental value was destroyed, can I sue a hero for reparations?
What the gov't does to stop discrimination against mutant types? Does some hero works alongside it? What are the politics of reintegration former criminals? There's any discrimination against them?
Is there a national campaign against quirk discrimination? The only thing we know about the hero curriculum is that they learn to use their quirks better, to "fight" and to rescue.
All those points above are great debate material that should be passed to heroes in training. If not the hero-villain dynamic is just a revolving door that can cost lives. -

But it's already sending the opposite message. A trans woman was depicted as a villain, a murder, unable to afford to transition and then she was killed off without having her story expanded upon and a message made of it.
If Horikoshi is going to involve people like me and so many of the children who will wind up reading the series in his story he needs to be held to account.
