My Hero Academia II - A true Hero

Looks like we'll meet Deku's father one day.
Really interested in seeing what kind of relationship he has with Deku, especially with Toshinori in the picture.
What's this fuss, we already know who is Deku's father. He is in jail. There is no way that Hori as a big fan of Star Wars will not use the Vader route with Deku.
-
Deku's dad can breathe fire, right? I'd rather have him as a sort of undercover hero, so that Deku's mom would never know as she'd flip her lid to know her husband was also a hero.
-
Horikoshi is the only mangaka I can trust to resist the urge of making the mc dad being a powerful cool guy and actually go for a short chubby salary-man with a receding hairline. Do it, Horikoshi! Go for it PLUS ULTRA style!
-
I want his dad to be super mundane and he occasionally gets a drink with Bakugo's dad lol.
-
Izuku's dad is on a business trip overseas, which is the Japanese version of "went out to buy cigarettes ten years ago and hasn't come back".
-
snort Well, there's always that too. Although if he did that he really is a villain.
-
Hisashi has the opportunity to come home to Inko every day but for some reason doesn't take it like a huge fucking idiot????? Dude is inherently sketchy.

How can he explain his injuries revived from All Might 5yrs ago? It would blow his cover up.

Izuku's dad is a shitty father.

He's providing, and not using him as a pokemon trainer/eugenics experiment.

Few more things from HoriFest 2018 I mean SDCC:
-The Viz booth almost got shut down multiple times by the fire marshals because the crowds were so big they blocked the aisles between booths. During the mad mob rush for Saturday signing tickets, the San Diego police came and said they would shut down all of Comic-Con if Viz couldn't get the crowd to disperse. They learned their lesson and made the Sunday signing tickets available through a lottery in the Sails Pavilion (far from the booth)
-MHA merch sold out by 10~11 am each day. I never made it to the merch counter except to chat once everything was completely gone
-He was initially going to wear a flu mask during the panels, but decided against it at the last minute. Still, there was strictly no photography/recording allowed at the panels/signing. At one point his interpreter interrupted herself to yell at a camera flash from the back. Turned out to be light reflecting off someone's cosplay, but!- that set a good precedent.
-Each of the two signings had about 90 (?) people. He took his time, allowing many to ask questions, even.
-Aizawa hair, very skinny, no facial hair, glasses, soft-spoken, shy. He habitually holds his hands like Tsuyu Asui! In front, dangling at the wrists.
-OFA/AFO was not inspired by the Three Musketeers.
-Shoto was NOT inspired by Zuko from Avatar: TLA. Horikoshi had never heard of Avatar!
-Toga would NOT turn invisible if she drank Hagakure's blood. He seemed to have to think about this answer.
-"What's up with Mineta's personality?" -> "Mm, yes. Well. He'll need a hard check soon, I think."
-"What was the inspiration for Mineta?" -> "Grapes. Just, grapes."
-"Do you ship any characters?" -> interpreter didn't understand the question at first, panel mod didn't allow it - waved the girl away, everyone in the audience went "awww" because it was kind of sad that she blew her shot for an actual question, but yeah…
-"Don't heroes like Cementoss destabilize the entire economy and cost people lots of jobs?" -> "Hey yeah that's a great point"
-"What western hero would make a good teacher at UA?" -> "Captain America, hands down"
-His fav western hero is Spiderman (looks cool, always a "fresh" look, relateable). He cosplayed as Spiderman for the premiere of Spiderman 2 and people took a lot of pictures and he was uncomfortable.
-Most expensive collectible he owns is a life-size bust of Carnage.
-He had the beginning and end of the story planned from the start; is filling in the middle as he goes
-Uraraka's costume motifs are "space," "future," "floatiness"
-Goku was a big inspiration for All Might (huh? makes no sense but okay)
-He smokes; his new editor (Yoritomi) does not smoke. Yori "absorbs" a lot of Hori's stress for him. Hori and Yori. Heheh.
-Yoritomi brings him his meals at the studio when Yori goes in for the daily (?) meeting.
-He loved the one Hawks cosplayer so much (mentioned her during the panel) that she got a ticket to the signing just because.
-Re: The Izuku's father question: "If you're looking forward to anything concerning him, you won't be disappointed"
-All Might is the hardest character to draw (presumably muscle form)
-This one fan came to me Saturday afternoon and asked if I could deliver a gift to Horikoshi. It was a homemade, reversible, screenprinted All Might hoodie (like Koichi's costume in Vigilantes). Very nicely made. I found myself into the hotel suite/greenroom Sunday morning and when there was a lull, I handed Hori the hoodie and explained. His vigilant posse wanted to check it (for anthrax/bombs/whatever) but I assured them I already had. He loved the hoodie and actually tried it on before the panel that morning.

There was a thread on Reddit about that.

That's awesome! Great choice.
-He had the beginning and end of the story planned from the start; is filling in the middle as he goes
Kinda like Oda then? That's very reassuring to know. :D
-Goku was a big inspiration for All Might (huh? makes no sense but okay)
Hmm…. I'm wondering if it's because Goku started out as a runt, an embarrassment in terms of a saiyan's power.
Then he got stronger and became the hero of earth, a symbol of peace.
Sounds kiiiinda similar to All Might if you put it that way.
He started quirkless and weak, then eventually raised his power and became a legend.-Re: The Izuku's father question: "If you're looking forward to anything concerning him, you won't be disappointed"
I never gave much thought about the Dad before, but this comment intrigues me. Hoping you're right, Hori!

OMFG that's really sweet. I hope the fan is aware or soon becomes aware of how much Hori liked it!

Awww. Why do so many manga-ka seem soft-spoken when I hear about them?
-Shoto was NOT inspired by Zuko from Avatar: TLA. Horikoshi had never heard of Avatar!
Shame. He would love Avatar. Probably won't have any time to watch it in the near future though.
-"What's up with Mineta's personality?" -> "Mm, yes. Well. He'll need a hard check soon, I think."
-"What was the inspiration for Mineta?" -> "Grapes. Just, grapes."
Good. If he is going to be anything more than just a joke he needs to mature. But a grape boy is kinda hilarious.
-"What western hero would make a good teacher at UA?" -> "Captain America, hands down"
Oh, naturally. Who wouldn't love to be taught by Captain America? A little surprised it wasn't Professor Xavier though.
Actually you can kinda think of All Might as a combo of Goku and Captain America, I think.
A good pick. Also understandable since Spidey is the teenage hero of the group. What does he mean by a "fresh" look though? Does Spidey change his outfit that often?
Also, a LIFE-SIZED bust of Carnage? Damn.
-He had the beginning and end of the story planned from the start; is filling in the middle as he goes
Same as Oda. The best authors should have the beginning and end planned from the start, it gives them a proper path to follow.
-He loved the one Hawks cosplayer so much (mentioned her during the panel) that she got a ticket to the signing just because.
See what hard work and dedication can get you? Now I want to see a picture of her.
-Re: The Izuku's father question: "If you're looking forward to anything concerning him, you won't be disappointed"
Woot! Our prayers are answered.

Awwwww! That's adorable on a stick. Actually reminds me of this:

I saw your tweet about the notebook, congrats!

Here!
…There was more cosplay representing MHA than any other property, honestly. At the whole con. Dekus, everywhere.
At anime expo in LA I saw a ton of Deku's and Bakugo'sand one very impressive Toga and Dabi. I like how popular it is in the west.
-

Thanks!
It felt too tacky to ask dumb fanboy questions at the exec dinner ("who's the traitor?" "is Shinso switching to hero course?" "are character birthdays meaningful?" "Did you get 'Deku' from the line in Miyazawa Kenji's poem Ame ni mo Makezu that goes 'minna ni deku no bou to yobare'?") so I didn't… but I knew I'd regret it forever if I didn't ask for an autograph. -
-"Don't heroes like Cementoss destabilize the entire economy and cost people lots of jobs?" -> "Hey yeah that's a great point"
I thought his powers were Concrete Manipulation instead of Creation, but I guess it would be the same thing.
-
-Shoto was NOT inspired by Zuko from Avatar: TLA. Horikoshi had never heard of Avatar!
This is by far my biggest surprise since they seem so similar that one had to be inspired by the other.
He sounds like a guy that likes the cool at most primal level to have a bust of Carnage. Probably would enjoy a Joker to. Spidey is a nice hero to be fan of.
I'm not surprise by his cosplaying story. He does sound like a strong but shy nerd. He most feel pretty great living in the MCU era.
Beginning to end doesn't mean much to me. It's about how you fill the middle and execute it.
I'm glad he got a warm welcome even if it was a bit overwhelming. He even got a handmade present and those always tell you the love for the work it's based on.
-

The other ones are somewhat.. intense.

That IS a nice cosplay. Kudos to you, girl.
And lol at all the Dekus. Well, it used to be Naruto or Bleach, but now MHA has taken their place.
-
All Might being inspired by Goku is encapsulated by his "Have no fear, for I have come" catchphrase. Goku's a bit of a dummy, but whenever he arrives (late) everyone else is instantly relieved and pins their hopes on him. All Might is a more matured Goku who understands his societal role and grapples with the concepts of legacy and losing power.
And now I don't know if All Might in a gi would look amazing or horrible.
-
Did you make a sculpture for the occasion?
Nahhh but I kind of wish I had.
I did bring him a copy of the MHA Free Comic Book Day sampler (in a plastic sleeve) which is in western comics format and therefore kind of unique. -
Oh, that's some very interesting stuff.
Horikoshi has mentioned DB is one of his inspirations before, but the series didn't seem to have any obvious send ups to it except maybe full cowl resembling SSJ2 a bit.
All Might resembles Goku in pretty indirect ways, but I can see it. The Deku and Bakugo rivalry also has similarities to Goku's and Vegeta's in principle. It's much less obvious influences than you usually see. Neat.
-
I could see BoomBoom or FlameBeard as Vegeta( I made the comparaison a couple of time) but Goku and All might I don't really see it.
-
Ya know what? I can believe that Zuko and Todoroki aren't related. Oozai and Endeavor's flavor of abuse are very distinct, todoroki was still the prized breed even after everything, while Zuko was completelly discarded, and fire powers leading to burn marks is a logic steep, plus the side being a 50/50.
But all for one and one for all not being based on the three musketeers? Bullshit.
If he's not lying, then whatever he based it on, was based on the three musketeers.
-
@CCC:
-His fav western hero is Spiderman (looks cool, always a "fresh" look, relateable).
-
It's been a while I've seen that. Spideman with mechs is still kinda amazing.
-

It does seem crazy, but I spoke to a friend (same one who asked about Zuko) who's lived in Japan for years, and she said that people are generally aware of the phrase (AFO/OFA) but rarely know where it comes from.
I was pretty disappointed, though, since I had a little theory that Izuku's B-day is 7/14 because Bastille Day -> France -> Alexandre Dumas -> Three Musketeers -> OFA
-

Now I would like to know more about the birthdays or if they were just random. Bakugo is supposedly the oldest in class since his is 4/20. But I assume 4/20 does not have the same meaning in Japan lol. I'm kinda surprised Tokoyami isnt the 31st of October.

The "are birthdays meaningful" would've been my one question if they hadn't ended the Q&A session before I reached the front of the line!
Since it wouldn't really involve mega spoilers, and it would've set off an army's worth of fans doing research and coming up with ridiculous theories (if he'd said "yes"). -
So OFA/AFO is based on The Three Musketeers, Horikoshi just doesn't realize it.
-

Well if you don't have the characters in mind and the meaning of it is it really still based on the three musketeers?
-
If you base something from the kame hame ha, is still based on the hawaiian king?

Sounds like Viz underestimated Horikoshi's power level. I'm happy he got a good experience with his western fans.
On a scale of Bob Saget to Madonna, how big was Horikoshi's entourage? -
From what I understood by eavesdropping on people who know what they're talking about, SDCC still doesn't take manga seriously, even when MHA is now the bestselling hero comic worldwide.
Viz should've had a bigger booth, we should've gotten Hall H for the panels (instead of 6 D-E), there should've been some sort of guest of honor status for him, etc.The entourage was…
-new editor Yoritomi
-old editor Monji
-deputy general manager for Shueisha's digital business divison
-Sasaki (model for the editor-in-chief in Bakuman manga, currently a VP for Global Shonen Jump)
-three other Shueisha men I wasn't quite sure about because I didn't get their business cards
-the official interpreter
-two ladies doing schedule coordination, I think
-Viz's public marketing guy (bilingual dude who interpreted fan questions during the second signing)
-Viz's editor-in-chief
-the two Viz editors of MHA
-Urian, Viz's marketing guy who always mods panels
-at one point, Justin Briner and Chris Sabat (voices of Deku/AM in dub) and a posse of like 10 Funimation people
-me, wherever I could butt in like the asshole I am and/or attempt to be useful somehow ("Y-yes I'd be thrilled to carry boxes and hand out posters. J-j-just happy to be here") -
Well I would hope SDCC would take manga more seriously after having the fucking fire marshal called in b/c of all the people there for one artist.
If this had been Anime Expo he would have gotten the complete royal treatment.
-
I'm slightly surprised they haven't had this before. Kishi or Kubo never got to go? I mean they were super popular at their peak. Kids still Naruto run in public…
Did Horikoshi get the chance to go since his story about heroes overlaps with western comics?
-
I heard that he wanted to go (and it was perfect storm timing with the anime getting huge and boosting manga sales)! Like, he chose SDCC over AX, because he's such a fan of Western heroes, Star Wars, etc.
Oh. His favorite Star Wars characters are Han Solo and Vader.
-
I see. Well that's pretty cool. What kind of swag did he bring along? MHA stuff at AX kept selling out. There was very little Bakugo stuff. And the nendoroid I wanted was 400 dollars lol. I wish they'd make another batch…
-
Here's the merch they had at the booth (everything sold out very very quickly - which is pretty nice for Vigilantes, actually!):

What an ugly scar. -
Ooh those final pages.
This was so good character writing-wise. Horikoshi is being extremely careful with Endevour. Even like the scar and how he looks now is a really effective kind of "stripping down" of his character.
You could keep him this awful father across the whole story, but it's much tougher to write how he would become a better father. He can't be forgiven just for doing a good thing once. Natsuo was the highlight next to the final pages with Deku to me.
-
Birdboy is an Endy fan. What happened to big brother Touya aka Dabi?! Aizawa chasing a cat and Fuyumi being a moeblob.
What a nice chapter. And Deku dreaming with his dad. -
The slurp panels were amazing, looking forward to seeing more Todoroki and Endeavour.
I hope the All for one/ One for all flashback is good because at the moment I do not care in the slightest about them, I'm much more interested in seeing Shigaraki's development then anything his master did in the past.
