I have been wondering who is the main character of this manga, Gojo seems to have more charisma than the whole cast
Jujutsu Kaisen

I typically find main characters to be fairly bland so Yuuji fits pretty well

They actually changed it

@mrsword Wow, I’m surprised. There was a phase where I wanted the most pristine version of my beloved thing, but I realized that there were bigger things to fry… life was a bit easier to manage when these kinds of things stopped bugging me. Coming from stuff like accepting the name changes in the obvious One Piece, or Conan, seeing typos here and there, I didn’t think this one was the biggest deal for the mob to lose their head over. The early catch on Dynamight for MHA was a bit more important, in comparison.

Finally diving into this series by watching the anime. Five episodes in and it's pretty good so far, but feels a little unfocused. The whole school aspect really feels like an editor note to me. It just feels like it doesn't fit the rest of the story.
Also, having just recently watched Chainsaw Man, I can't help but notice a lot of similarities between the two series.
- Both are set in the modern world and have demons in them.
- The main character is kind of goofy and can change into a demonic form, plus they have similar names (Yuji and Denji)
- Super serious upperclassman side character who has a tragic romance.
- Main girl is a fellow newcomer who's also kind of abrasive.
BTW, does anyone else get the sense that Kugisaki is a lesbian? She met a woman in her hometown that she thought was "cute", the woman got driven out of town, and then Kugisaki left the town herself for fear that it would "kill" her. Or am I reading too much into it?

I do. And I thing a great deal of the fandom also does. -

Think of the school part as a small training arc so that our MC can gain the skills to take on the world's dangers.
It wasn't meant to be like MHA or something like that.
Plus as much as they call it a school, I would compare it more to the hunters association. Also yeah, Chainsaw man and JJK chair a bit of Dna like you mentioned. But both stories quickly set themselves apart from each other.
I would never compare Danji to Yuji. Denji is just waay too different to Yuki lol.
But I will grant you, the beginning of both stories are eerily similar to each other. Including the team dynamics and the fact that the MC is recruited by the most powerful person of their respective organizations.
Anyway, if you like HxH, then this will be a helluva of a ride for you.(The manga is also dope)

Meh. Close enough.
@kevo_koma I've heard comparisons to HxH before. Frankly, thus far, I'm not seeing it.
-
@Nobodyman If you are still 5 episodes in, its still early.
Once they start bringing out simple domains, cursed energy, domain expansions etc.
The whole series takes on a hxh hue. -
I guess either I know very little about HxH or that I haven't seen enough of this series, but I pegged it as more of being like Bleach, with all the bad spirits and stuff. Granted I've only seen a few episodes.
it's on the backlog list along with Demon Slayer and MHA lol
edit: hell the beginning reminds me of Naruto. Team with dumbass goofy mc, the girl, super serious black-haired rival guy, and cool-as-fuck teacher (gojo). sorry if that feels like a diss too lol
-
LOL. Yeah, Gojo definitely giving off Kakashi vibes with the white hair and blindfold.
-
It's the power system that's most like HXH. Jujutsu's and nen aren't exactly the same but they certainly can feel similar with all the rules and insanity that sometimes goes on with them.

you know I didn't think it was possible for a series to be at the top and then plummet straight down to oblivion in a chapter but the shounen genre has proved repeatedly that is a rule at this point. this is actually fascinating because the author is not in self-denial, it's as if he hates what he is doing and just wants to quit this year. I always thought that the genre is cursed and constantly question why I'm still so addicted to it but then the realization comes that the fall always comes after the pride. Almost 90% of successful series that blew up comes with a terrible ending, is it fame? is it the money to retire at 30 to not have to work anymore? is it apex legends? was making it more important than writing integrity? does he want to get revenge on jump and care little about implicating his audience as a result of that?
I guess if you did become so popular, you'll think everything you do is right and alas with Japanese worship culture I can see how that can get into anyone's head. This chapter is dogshit.

It's the insane Jump scheduling. This is not a new phenomenon at all. There is a reason that more and more authors are going to Jump+ because the scheduling is much more flexible and forgiving.
I would rather have authors publish less often but stay consistent than grinding them into a paste until they just can't take it and sabotage their own work to get out.
-
@kevo_koma I was referring to the latest leaked chapter instead of the official release. First of all , sorry if that screamed spoiler territory for you. But largely because how rushed, forced and complete lack of care towards characters the chapter was. It was such a huge 180 from how handled, or at least from my impression of his ability to, handle characters.
That and a bunch of other stuff that built up to me breaking whatever tolerance or cope I had this was still as good as Shibuya and Gege still intends to do good writing. Such as Maki's Sakurajima handling (the kappa and sumo guy isn't even relevant anymore), how Tsumiki was handled, how the past sorcerers were handled, how the military plotline was wholly unnecessary, how angel was handled, and also how Miwa did nothing. Characters don't react and interact with each other like they should and doesn't weight in on other character actions like most organic characters would. Characters becoming plot devices, Gege introducing a large cast for Culling games and doing jackshit with them, and worldbuilding has gone to shit where exposition matters more than show than tell.
-
@PatTraverse You see, I would agree with you and point the finger at Jump but then I realize that if the same organization can put something as new as Ruri Dragon on hold, ask Horikoshi to take breaks, give BC month or so break to plan, you can actually see that they are willing to compromise and don't mind changing things up if the delivery is still of quality.
JJK isn't just any series, it is one of this decade's top selling ones. The universal language is always money and I don't think JUMP wants it to end but they obviously don't want Gege to tire out. All this is to say that he does have a say and enough leverage to negotiate. CSM ran nudity and sex, Ruridragon is not dropped, and both have insanely high sales volume and popularity that even JUMP would think twice to screw the author over.
I don't work at JUMP but come on, anything is better than burning your story to the ground. But of course, I get the whole "your work is not your life" and "happiness for others might be retiring at 30 instead of risking health issues later at 40", so really, who am I to decide that maybe he should actually not burn it all down when he sleeps like 4-5 hours a day?
This then brings the discussion to whether it is an absolute must for him to have this work schedule and whether there is a gun to his head. I sincerely doubt it is the only option when you consider the multitudes of choices he can take if he does care about writing a good story and doing right by his fans.
And he's not entirely blameless either. Culling games introduced too large a cast that is way out of his ballpark to handle and it showed. I can go on another rant on how there are a number of glaring flaws in culling game too but this is too long a post already.
A pet peeve of mine and something that triggers me is this memory of an interview Gege gave that his greatest influences are Hunter X Hunter and Bleach and I never did get how can two series that are so glaringly different in writing quality can both be good in his mind.
Now I do.

It's basically this, the culling games were a bit more than he could manage, he kept throwing stuff into it and the moment he needed to exit became an absolute mess.
-
oh and for good measure, I forgot to mention how he handled Yuki.
Good job proving Kubo right Gege. I'm sure he is beaming in approval seeing how he handled his. -

The complex power system of one with the complete disregard of anything other than style over substance of the other.

I never got why Gege don't like his female characthers.

if I have to wager a guess it's because they aren't "traditionally/conventionally" feminine enough which is funny because he makes a conscious choice to do nothing with the stereotypically more feminine girls that the manga has. Think japanese fangirls going kyaah kawaii over anime girls and you'll get an idea or boys wanting an image of a cute girl to protect. A good reference to base this on is that I'm not kidding when characters like Orihime and Sakura consistently get top 10 in character polls.

The later I can "understand" despite being wildly misogyny plays upon power fantasies, the former I can't get...why would someone want to write a walking marketable plushie instead of a character?!
-
@pariston_hill I mean.. Chopper's development is a thing over the years and that sells well!

14 episodes into the anime and, Hey! We're finally getting to this school tournament thing.

I hope Gojo lives up to the hype. AND that Itadoki can keep his title of protagonist and do something worthy with it. This is a story about using your life well and helping people, right? It has to circle back to his grandpa's death...
-
What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object
-
gojo gonna lose because of some bs reason and yuji will finish sukuna but die and with jjk system in shambles jjk2 will be about gojo and new protagonist in jjk high school 2
-
The last few chapters, ever since Gojo came back, have read like something is missing. There was no climatic story progression till Gojo was freed, its just something that happened.
Sukuna being almost complete is good to see, but I do wonder what's going on with Megumi. Will he be able to fight back in a crucial moment or is he forced to watch what happens to his friends and teacher? The fight between Gojo and Sukuna is hopefully epic, but I am rooting for Sukuna, not sure if Gojo is gonna die, but who knows what will happen.

Finished up the first season of the anime.
I definitely preferred the second half with the school tournament thing. The first half felt a bit unfocused as the story was still trying to find its footing, but now I think the author has found a good steady pace.
In any case, I'm definitely on board now and may even watch season 2 concurrently when it comes out, which isn't something I usually do.

Mistakes were made
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1016996 -
I expected that gojo would lose a domain considering that Sukana can do it without a barrier which to me means higher skills.
The question is Gojo instantly fucked or can he adapt. For now Im hoping a Gojo that uses the 6 eyes to read the trajectory of the slices and keep putting Sukana in its trajectory. And maybe forcing Sukana to keep it open long enough that by the time the kids get their turn Sukana either cant use it anymore or has to use a more limited version.
-
I don't know why he decided to show us the other cast, I think it might have been more interesting to see an inner monologue by Gojo while he fights Sukuna.
I do believe that Gojo will lose, otherwise what else is there for Itadori to do?
Its gonna be interesting to see how the fight evolves from here. I'd say Gojo isn't dead, but he should be able to use reversed cursed technique to heal himself. I mean that's what he did in his fight against Toji.
Hope to see more action in the next chapter, but it's not out of question that the next chapter is a reaction to what happened, or a troll that its just an illusion or something like that. -
I find the debate at the beginning quite cool, even though I wasn't really following it. It's really cool that characters get to debate like internet forums in the main series and it makes sense in context, I liked to see it. Togashi would be proud. The cliffhanger has been done to death, so I'm not holding my breath but I want to see how Gojo goes down.
-
I find the debate dumb since they barely started to fight and no one use their domain expansion until they think they are in trouble. Its made more pointless by them just doing it in the chapter so Im even more confused by the "its weird they arent using domain expansion in a fight that just started"
At least the talk about how impossible it should be to make a barrierless domain made sense since it was just a debate on if that technique is even possible.
-
-
The commentary helps Gege not draw as much, lol. I'm sure it's not the main purpose but I'm sure it helps him and it is intentional. I mean, we are way too late into the series for him to pull this commentary/debate element as if this was always part of the series.
That's like my opinion but it's perfectly clear to anyone who has dabbled enough into drawing that drawing action sequences is significantly more time consuming than faces. This also reminds me that he doesn't want the anime to narration but constantly does narration in the series. Like dude, come on.
Otherwise great chapter.
@The-Light-of-Shandora i think this is the first time in shounen when the series is self aware that yeah, you know what fuck it, just let them netflix and chill because no matter what they do if Gojo loses its over anyway. None of that everyone has to run around trying to do something or fight enemies that don't matter because even if they win against Kenjaku if gojo loses its over.
I don't like it because it's so so lazy and this series has been taking so many shortcuts but I kind of get the logic in it. Not a very shounen thing to do either. I don't like it but it's...there and reasonable, I guess.
-
@zeltrax225
Maybe this commentary on a fight is something he experienced once himself.
Not sure how old he is, but like in every WSJ series when a big fight happens you talk about it with your friend.
What if he does that and the bad guy does that? - Sort of a commentary on fighting sequences itself, like theorizing and power scaling his own series.Of course it makes sense that he might not want to draw that much. But I think it works well in this chapter.
The chapter itself is well done, like that Gojo needs to put in work. Enjoyable chapter, not sure how long this will drag on. Another 3? Or is it gonna be even longer with intermissions between them, of just talking or Geto doing stuff.
-
@The-Light-of-Shandora oh yeah I totally get the approach and what you meant, this is pretty much r/Jujutsushi in a nutshell. What I'm trying to say is that other manga does do this to a certain degree: e.g: Naruto's final war where NPC ninjas or side character number 39 fill up panels with commentary (and reaction shots), One Piece does this to a smaller degree, Dragon Ball did this (Z especially). So this usually all happens as the character is "in the fighting zone and participating" but ultimately "does nothing of significant" yet we are eluded to them actually contributing but they don't. It's done to portray as a "all out war, everyone is involved" scenario but ultimately boils down to whether X or Y wins. So with Gege, I felt like he just cut all of that false pretense scenario and straight out puts them in an audience seating instead of pretending it to otherwise (None of you matters if Gojo loses, flat out). I don't think there's anything unreasonable about that, just not a very shounen portrayal because the magazine theme is always about the collective at the very least being there and trying.
It's one of the many aspects I enjoy about this series and how it approaches tropes (cue Gojo's speech to Megumi about how you die alone) but in this case, I'm also quite certain that he has been taking shortcuts and he DOES want to end this as soon as he can.
-
Gege's lost me with this fight so far. I don't care for how much yuji and co.'s sports play by play has consumed a majority of the fight. I want gojo vs sukumegs, not the good guys watching the telly explaining techniques and what will and won't work. Like I'm fine with some but it's too much. It just feels like gege's shortchanging this fight :/
-
The tension is kinda gone when your friends sit together to talk about it like they were arguing about a soccer match for me.
You are supposed to marvel that Gojo is running 3 things simultaneously but since it's not visually impactfull enought you have to create a crowd to explain this to the public and it was not very well done here, imo.
-
I think this is just a strategy to have narration without including a narrator whenever the anime reaches this point.

I think an internal narration from Gojo would have been better.
But then, Gege wouldn't have had his big cliff hanger last week. -
Time to read back on this series from the start.
-
So Gojo will die!, even though I know they trap him until Sukona gain power, I wish they had just killed him off. The Manga is just not the same as when it started, something is missing the whole thing just feels like a bunch of random thought went into it. It is as if you have some food in your home that you can't use to cook a specific meal and you just throw everything in the pot to try and create something.
-
@Richel
Hope this is not a spoiler for the new chapter. -
I still don't understand why the lightning guy is sitting this fight out.
His whole deal was fighting Sukuna. If Gojo wins, he can't achieve his goal. If Sukuna wins, he will be weakened and tired,so it will also be a lose for him since he wants a fair fight.
