Additionally, cinematographer Robert D. Yeoman offers us much more than static mid-shots and talking heads, with creative attempts to consistently one-up the amount of movement in each consecutive shot. The team in charge of delivering this, one of the year’s most anticipated films, ensure that the expertly written, visceral flashbacks that detail the struggles of one woman in pursuit of self-fulfillment and an escape from society’s expectations, parallel the journey taken by her own daughter many years after these initial events took place.
This sequel tackles the heavy themes of what it means to be independent woman (who, despite insistence otherwise, will always ultimately feel the need to rely on a man), the way in which we mourn, and the intense urge to fill the holes in one’s life with spontaneous bursts of song.
All this, accomplished with the use of ABBA’s greatest hits, inarguably the very essence of the 80s.
Good times abound in this feel-good, playful romp of a film – one cannot claim to have truly lived without having witnessed the honest, actual, life-changingly magnificent visage of a man “to whom age has been kind, like a fine wine or cheese”, the Firthster himself.
