This is the third sign, the switch version had extra content hinting into another instalment, and Kingdom hearts secret ending showed the 104 building in shibuya.
It is more likely that Chrono trigger or final fantasy xvi being a fantasy game.

I'm finally playing Final Fantasy VII: Remake and enjoying it, though it's pretty behind the times (like lots of SE games). The controls are great in combat, but don't work all that well in combat when compared to their contemporaries. I don't think every building needed to be explorable or it needed to be even to the Witcher's level of openness, but I think the cluttered nature of the city makes it feel more ripe for exploration and the proliferation of invisible walls ends up being more disappointing than in other games. Still, the city is beautiful and fun to explore, which is a testament to their skill, and I absolutely love the combat and think it's a fine successor to Final Fantasy VII's.
Also, I'm loving how much better of a job the game has done with emphasizing the effects, good and bad, of destroying the reactor on Midgard. The writing so far is something I can get behind.

Is this NiGHTS?
Wow, that is straight up NiGHTS. Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima are on it, and they were producer and director of Nights (and the early sonic games) so that makes a lot of sense.
Without the flying part that was the whole fun of it. But the music and art direction are definitely inspired.
But EIGHTY costume power ups? That actually kind of sucks. It means they'll all be lackluster and do exactly one thing to solve exactly one kind of puzzle or overlap a ton. A dozen powerups is about all most games can really tolerate while keeping them all unique and fresh without getting overwhelming, and maybe up to 30 or so in a Kirby-like game or a really long RPG.

Final Fantasy XIV's latest patch wrapped up the storyline for their last expansion, Shadowbringers, and it is pretty easily my favorite FF story. They've also expanded the free trial to take new players all the way through the first expansion, Heavensward, which is a great story in its own right.
Know it's a time commitment, but it's a good time to at least stick a toe in the water if you're an FF fan. The original content is admittedly slow–though sped up by the latest patch--but even that is kind of endearing. Main story is probably 90% soloable.

It's a big one. FFXIV is basically four full length games- A Realm Reborn, and the expansions Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers.
The first three have all been streamlined to get through faster (ARR in particular recently getting a great deal of pointless fetch quests chopped) so I can't say for certain how long it would take now compared to at launch, but I think it would still be ~60 hours each game. Obviously will be a lot faster if you ignore all the side quests and just charge through the story with one class. There'd be eleven, I think, fighting classes open to you (there's a crafting system but you don't even need to touch that if you don't want to) in the free trial initially, and it's entirely possible to level them all.
Like was said above though, this is a great time to at least try it, because the free trial goes all the way to end of Heavensward. A Realm Reborn doesn't have a brilliant story, but it's charming in its own right, sort of typical traditional FF way (crystals, evil empire, summons, evil wizard bent of world destruction). Heavensward is outstanding though, and from the admittedly brief look of FFXVI it looks quite Heavensward inspired.

Owain did a fine job summing it up, but here's my additional take:
I just took my brothers and my 64-year-old father (!) through the full game starting earlier this year. Playing twice a week and not doing any major dungeons or trials until the entire group was ready, took about six months. I'd think with a relatively consistent playing schedule without those kinds of restrictions and focusing on the main scenario, could get through in about three to four.
A lot of it depends on how you play. They've done a remarkably decent job of gearing the game towards the individual story, so if you stick with one class and focus only the main story quests, you'll rarely have to do much side-questing except for maybe bits and pieces at the end of each expansion. There are about 8-10 mandatory four-man dungeons and four or five eight-man trials in each big chunk of the game, but they won't take more than half an hour each to clear with a few exceptions. XIV has a very good community and self-polices pretty nicely, so generally speaking veterans don't get huffy about max-minning their runs for new players; in fact, I've seen a whole lot of vets pretty excited about helping new folk figure out the game with the expanded trial over the past month.
Probably the biggest problem is the first fifty levels are not especially dynamic in gameplay or story, except for some of the latter dungeons or trials. A Realm Reborn (aka XIV Vanilla) has some lovely areas, some great tunes, and starts to introduce some characters that become all-time favorites over the course of the rest of the game, but it's all a little generic and the main scenario gets a little fetch-questy. Heavensward is when it finally starts to embrace the over-the-top melodrama (in a good way!) and visual/audio insanity that used to be the hallmark of Final Fantasy. Stormblood is a step back, but Shadowbringers, as I've noted, is peak FF and just all-around peak video-game storytelling. If you can make it through the first areas of Heavensward and still lack a compelling interest in moving forward, though, it most likely will never be a game for you.
Admittedly, it's kind of a hard sell, but will finish by saying a lot of what has made it…thinks for sec...hell, let's just say it, my favorite game of all-time is that there's an optimism to it all that permeates the story, the characters, the folks developing it, and (most of) the community. It's remarkably lacking in cynicism or edginess for the sake of edginess. Not the worst place to spend time in...well...gestures around bleakly

As a small addendum, my Family Squad playthrough included both one person who has never played a JRPG (my father) and one who is generally antagonistic to them. My father was hooked by the end of Realm Reborn and kept texting me plot updates to the point of irritation. My brother, who has generally hated Final Fantasy, readily admitted that he loved the Shadowbringers story, though it took some convincing to get him through vanilla.

Damn. You guys are making me want to play, but I'm definitely not at the point where I can devote very much time to a game right now. I have a lot of different projects and some self-learning I need to do in the next half year or more (I have at least 4 IT certificates I'd like to get).

YS is a series I've been interested in for a long time, and I even got half of them on Steam ages ago and I just… haven't gotten around to playing them. One of those things.

Think this is honestly a big part of it. The last-ditch effort was replacing a bunch of people trying to make another financial success a la FFXI with a core who truly and passionately believed in the game. I doubt it would have been anywhere near as good as it is now without that initial massive failure.

Yeah, I like it way better than World of Warcraft to be honest. Mainly because the game has a story and it also feels like the community is much nicer, well with people being respectful of LGBT compared to WoW's community where it was more anti-LGBT, but it's probably more of my experiences in the past than anything, so I'm probably generalizing.

Just went to check that presentation video. Skipped most of the acting, got to the gameplay, looks cool, got to the fight segment, my jaw literally dropped. That thing is balls!

The game wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire when it was shown off for the first time last year (though I honestly think some of the criticism was overblown). Whereas the reaction to the demo was somewhat mixed.
All in all I think the biggest thing that hurt the game might be it’s Service Game Model Which the Covid Outbreak hasn’t helped.

I totally agree, there’s to many great games out there to spend money on something that’s mediocre
And shame on them to be honest, you have one of the biggest franchises of all time, with the backing of Disney and Square Enix and you come out with something that’s just Average or worse! You deserve what you get
They could have made a great game but instead, from what I hear, they basically made a tedious repeating gameplay, loot box heavy micro transaction mess

MvCInfinite had Disney's backing and that's one half of the reason the game turned out the way it did. Plus as the last Avengers game (and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2) showed it's not that easy.

I’ve accepted that the game would never recapture that magic of playing on the DS and utilizing the controls in a unique way that couldn’t be replicated anywhere else.
I was hoping if a sequel ever was made, the game would try to focus on the console and make the controls unique to the system again (and porting a mobile version of the game to the switch didn’t count IMO. Would’ve liked to make the game more unique to the Switch controls in a way the old game didn’t). The fact that it will show up on the PS4 and Switch though does kill my hope of that happening though.
Still, I loved the original game and am super excited for the sequel, even despite the lackluster DLC on the Switch. Just please keep the story/plot away from Tetsuya Nomura.
Read/watched the story/cut scenes from Melody of Memories. It’s like reading Bleach at this point. I can’t turn away but the plot has become so ridiculous and the main protagonist begins each new arc essentially from scratch learning new abilities specifically for the game. And the women are more or less useless (Kairi got shafted for a game where she was essentially the poster child)

Some thoughts of mine:
Since Square-Enix missed the boat on the 3DS it was inevitable that the battle system would have to be significantly revamped for a sequel (which is of course justified by the rules of the setting). It looks a little more typically action RPG-ish with a traditional four-man party on the screen all at once though there does still appear to be a partner-swapping mechanic (will we have full or limited control over the non-Rindo characters?) and a Light Puck-esque mechanic with the percentage and wheel gauges. It definitely looks how I'd expect a 3D The World Ends With You follow-up to look, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more light shed on the new battle system (and hope it doesn't end up being a tweaked Kingdom Hearts reskin as Final Fantasy XV and VII R are haha).
The original game was the first time I'd played a truly "Japanese" game in the sense of it featuring actual Japanese characters in a real-world Japanese location but since then I've played a lot of Shin Megami Tensei games so the novelty there is a bit lost. It's still cool that they've maintained the distorted, looming buildings aesthetic.
As far as aesthetic goes, while I know he wasn't the sole character designer of the first game I'm glad that so far it looks like Nomura continues to be be pretty well-behaved on that front as he was then.
And I'm also over here chuckling at the fact that of course they brought back the most meme-able character from the first game as a party member in the second! Minamimoto being back is definitely the most intriguing thing shown in the trailer, and I know that the new content in Final Remix set up both him coming back and a couple other potential sequel plot elements so I'm going to have to give it a watch on Youtube one of these days. Assuming this is the same Sho Minamimoto from the first game and not one from another world or whatever.
The original game was really smartly designed in how it used pretty much every last feature of the DS, right down to proto-StreetPass, and integrated them into the world and narrative in clever ways so I'm not fully convinced that Square-Enix (since it looks like it's been developed completely in-house this time around instead of SE being "just" the publisher) can capture that lightning in a bottle again after all this time. That said, even if NEO ends up falling short of its predecessor it's nice to finally have some closure after a solid decade+ of teases and mobile ports and blue-balling announcement countdowns.
Man, between this, the two Shin Megami Tensei games, the leaked Ace Attorney stuff, and the other miscellaneous games already scheduled 2021 is looking to be up there with 2016 in terms of being murder on my wallet

In the original game you heavily customized your moveset. (Some attacks ended up being best purely for how easy they were do the stylus motion for) while your teammate played semi on autopilot on the other screen.
Sicne they obviously won't have stylus controls this time, and they've gone full squad… it seems likely you'll be able to customize everyone as you see fit... so they could play identically or radically different, depending on how you set it up.

Sure they now have the heavy lifting of the combat engine and main character models done, and the rest of the game uses most of the same assetts throughout, but now they have to make the world and all that goes with it. I don't expect every city to get the Midgar treatment, they didn't in the original, but if its at all comprehensive they had a LOT to do.
I have to assume they're going to massively, MASSivELY scale down the overworld so that its just one continent instead of the whole planet… or else have massive chunks of untravelled area but there is still a ton of game to go.

Announcement was in 2015, but in 2017 Square moved the development of the game in-house after terminating their partnership with CyberConnect2 and started fresh. That means the game actually took only 3 years to finish.
Call me optimistic if you want, but I think by 2025-26 they'll be done.
