Actually the choppiness works perfectly imo. Looks like something out of a really old horror movie and that's not a bad thing. Kids today and their expensive CGI effects can't appreciate the simple effects that sometimes work far better. Not to mention the music.

Takara's part especially his background animation was neat, and Ichikawa's character corrections were great as always.

But I have to say that I really disliked the episode's direction and Endou's boring storyboard. Boring storyboard means bad pacing control to me. Music choice didn't help either.

Well… I think I felt better after watched it again, but I still cannot say that I'm satisfied.

Most of the content of the episode was from the manga panel for panel though other than a few scenes of Luffy running around.

The animation is still pretty bad, but each shot looks better as they're now using some sort of new filter to give everything more depth, the crude drawings don't stand out as much, almost like they are trying to give it that cel animation look.

Because it makes more money apparently because the world loves Dragon Ball.

That and there is a major shortage of animators going on in Japan as of late (the reason Attack on Titan was only 12 episodes instead of 24 episodes) due to poor working conditions and treatment in general, not to mention being massively underpaid. The few good animators around for Toei are likely being pushed for Super and the upcoming Episode of East Blue special, which also takes priority over these transitional episodes in the arc. I'm sure more attention will be given to later episodes where things get really moving.

User above me also points out something as well. Lately the characters really look really detailed compared to certain episodes we've had in past arcs and always look on model. Animation is one thing but for me artwork plays a bigger role in my enjoyment. How much the anime resembles Oda's artwork is key and more important than animation movement to me.

Just like what @dropper said above, DBS now is using a new post-progressing style from the new arc. Indeed this new style is very similar to Heart of Gold, which had the same director with DBS from #77.

The normal One Piece series doesn't use too many post-progressing filters. So the general looking is closer to the original materials. That is to say, the general looking of an episode mainly depends on the episode itself. For example, if the animation director of an episode messes the episode up, the episode director's direction decisions are too bland, or the background artwork is not good enough, the general looking of the episode will be affected.

The general looking of WCI arc is great for the most part. But I personally think there's an obvious drop in these two episodes, even though there're many key shots in this episode were corrected by Ichikawa. As a Yokoyama's episode, it could have looked much better, so maybe Yokoyama didn't put much effort into this epiaode. But I'm wondering what Yokoyama is busy on. Maybe we'll find out soon.

Zeff is known to punch Sanji whenever he's especially upset with him. The other Baratie chefs commented on it IIRC.

A slightly above average episode anination and pacing wise in my opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I belive that when you barely have a pre-production period, refuse to do longer filler arcs (Toei and their stakeholders think it will hurt the OP anime, but IMO they're just hurting themselves), rush the schedule for the episodes and don't let animators correct their drawings in time, it will affect the animation quality anyways, regardless of the budget.

The animation for the Sanji vs Judge fight is average at best. It's far from being pure garbage, but it definetly deserved some more impressive sakuga.

I mean, Kazuya Hisada is far from being a low tier animator, heck he's one of the top dogs in this animation studio, but he can do better than this.

The last 3 episodes were the work of IMO, a rushed schedule.

Anime only watchers spoiler alert!

! I hope that the Luffy vs Cracker fight won't be damaged too much due to the special episode. Let's just cross fingers.

I've been watching it, I might have been a little too harsh, there was one good fight scene near the beginning of the episode. I don't really expect much from the upcoming episodes of Super. Marineford vibes.

Dragon ball super fans suffered long enough while they were suffering one piece fans where trashing any form of sakuga by top animators.

One piece fan base Don't deserve anything nice, there going to trash any good animator that works on the series anyways.

Thanks to ichikawa one piece has reached a level it mostly has very strong art the designs hisada provided for germa really pop out , with some nice sanji close ups.

I enjoyed the direction of the fight it had some nice art but the animation was just decent nothing special, I suspect some of the key animators are busy working on the special.

Next week looks better.

By way tiger mask w ends next week or the week after, that's where a lot of toei top animation staff are at, production should have ended so I expect some talent trickle down to one piece and other toei shows.

Tiger mask w as been lit it's like one of the best original anime to air in a long time.

I was going to complain about them reusing character models for the Germa soldiers but then I realized why hehe.

Sanji vs. Judge was pretty good. Also I really like how they're showing the situation with the weird crewmates, which was rushed to the point of being nearly nonexistent in the manga.
