What is the most overated and underated anime of all time?
Overated
Inuyasha
Underated
Kiddy Grade
Overrated: Love Hina
Underrated: Genshiken
The most overrated anime I have seen is definatly Inuyasha.
The most underrated anime? Man, that's tough. I would say something like The Big O or Robotech. (Basically any mecha anime that doesn't involve Gundams.)
Overrated: Any Gundam series. I simply cannot get into them at all. Giant Robots are fun, but dammit, I like interesting CHARACTERS (like in FMP)
Underrated: Outlaw Star. God I loved this show when it was on CN… I need to get the DVDs...
Overrated:
Inuyasha
Gundam Wing
Underrated:
I can't think of much right now, but I guess Big O is.
Overated: Love Hina - although someone already said this, I completely concur!
Underrated: Not to state the obvious..but..One Piece.
Most overrated? Hmmm…not sure, really. There are a lot I'd consider in this categorey, perhaps, but nothing that really comes to mind as definite.
Most underrated? Argent Soma. It gets no lovin'.
Overrated: I'm not sure….
Underrated: I think Giant Robo is underrated. Many people won't even give it a chance….
Most Overrated(In America): InuYasha, it's just not near as good as people think it is.
Most Underrated(In America): One Piece, it's WAY better than what 4K!ds air on 4K!ds TV.
Evangelion is pretty overrated as far as good anime shows go, but Inu Yasha takes the cake. Naruto anime ending in a close second place.
Of course One Piece is underrated, but I think Kimagure Orange Road definitely deserves more attention.
Over-rated-Cowboy Bebop
Underated- Outlaw Star
Overrated: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Underrated: Big O
It depends.
If you're saying by "mainstream" fans, then hands down it's DBZ and Yu-Gi-Oh!. I can't tell you how many times I've been out in public and hear people talk about those two shows as if it's the end-all, be-all of programming out there. These are fans that only check out the "mainstream" anime shown on television because all their friends know of it and wouldn't give other programs the time of day.
But for actual anime fans, I agree with The Dude. I think EVA is vastly over-rated, especially a few years ago when it just came out. It's a show that tried to get too "deep" and created numerous plot holes that turned it into a big mess at the end. Ending a series with no real "ending" is not a work of art- it's just stupid.
And yes, One Piece is vastly over-rated. I have nightmares about it being shown on CN this May. Even if they show the uncut version, we still have to deal with those horrible voices. shivers
I'm glad some of us are tackling the big boys (Eva, CB). To that, I'll add Trigun and Naruto.
I think all of my favorites are underrated. You never hear much about Rose of Versailles or Hajime no Ippo 'round these parts.
One Piece, I dunno about. Even though I probably give it more praise than it deserves, I feel it's just plain ignored by most SJ readers.
^
Best… sig... EVER! I LOVE it!!!   "Dumb Superman, um... Fag Jester."
Back on topic...
Trigun is great for a few episodes. Haha. That two-parter when the Gung Ho Guns show up for the first time is awesome. There's a really wicked Monev the Gale figure out there: Monev Action Figure
The sucker is HUGE. The pic doesn't do it justice. If the entire series was just as good as those few episodes, then I'd be disagreeing with you. But as it stands right now, you're right, it is an over-rated show.

You seem to agree with everyone else, but did you mean "Under-rated"?
Over: Eva, Naruto.
Under: One Piece, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure (Although Jojo isn't very well known).

but did you mean "Under-rated"?
Whoops, typo. Yeah.
I love JoJo. But I think it's an acquired taste. I think it's under-rated for good reason. It's an insane, chaotic manga that switches its tone with each new story arc. First it was horror, then it was adventure, then it was fighting….
I view it as crazy campiness, with character names like "REO Speedwagon" and "Oingo Boingo" (70s and 80s rock bands). And from series 4 - on, the characters are all designed like androgynous boy bands. It's pure fun, but it's not exactly Shakespeare material. :P
Jojo just has really bad luck. It's incredibly long , and Araki doesn't want the names changed. Those that get into a series through its anime would be shit out of luck because it only has 14 condensed episodes, and Super Techno Arts sucks ass.
Oh, and there's that whole weird thing. The people who think "Jack Bladekill" is a good name would probably find "Hol Horse" lame.
I agree that Bebop is pretty overrated, but it's still a good series.
Eva is pretty overrated too.
I think that G Gundam is underrated…

I think that G Gundam is underrated…
I agree. G Gundam is my favorite of the Gundam series…and it doesn't get enough respect. (By the way, Yasuhiro Imagawa -who also did the underrated series I posted earlier, Giant Robo- was the director).
G Gundam is my favorite as well, and I always hear people talking crap about it. Sure, I admit that it's pretty cheesy and campy at time, but that's part of the lovable charm.

Yep, G is the best Gundam series. No war, it's actually DIFFERENT from other Gundam Shows. WOW! What a concept! Giant mobile suits for something OTHER than war.
I wouldn't say it's Under-rated though. It seems REALLY popular online…
Overtated:
Wolf's Rain
Underated:
One Piece
Overrated:
Inuyasha - Just so damn repetitive I feel like I've seen every episode. (I've only seen it on CN though so maybe it's better in its original form, hell, it does have Usopp's VA as Inuyasha in Japanese so that's already a plus)
Naruto - I do actually enjoy Naruto, but it is very much overrated
Underrated:
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Really one of my favorite animes. Amusing stories and characters. The dub is pretty damn good too. Watch it!
Hmm, this is a toughie, there are so many I can think of in either category.
Overrated– Love Hina and its ilk. So many things have already been done in that exact same vein and really, unless the characters are really interesting and someting else is going on for a main plot, I don't find even the originals interesting. In fact, I find them irritating to the extreme. The fact that they're popular on top of it bugs me. Inuyasha, Weiss Kreuz, and Fushigi Yuugi get votes from me, too.
Underrated-- Puppet Princess, Phantom Quest Corps, and Blue Seed, because I couldn't chose between them. They're not perfect but they're defenetely worth a watch and for some reason people don't see them as much. I'm vastly more entertained by those there than I am by a lot of the more popular fair. Utena is a bit underrated, too, I think. It tends to get written off as either standard shoujo (which it's not) or pretentious (which it probably is, but it's genuinely deep at the same time). I could go on, but I won't. ;)

overrated : Naruto
underrated : Dragon Ball
I'm really  when I read Narutards claim how Naruto is billion times better than Dragon Ball. Especially when the argument is that it has more story. That's a good one. Just take the Trunks background and time-travel theory and you'll have more plot than the whole Naruto series.
I love both series, but still believe DB is superior in many ways.
Other underrated series : One Piece of course, Juuni Kokuki, Fruits Basket…
Overatted: Naruto (though I do like it), Dragon Ball Z, Inuyasha
Underated: Jojo's Bizzare Adventure, Boogiepop Phantom, One Piece, Shadow Skill, Get Backers
Overrated- Inuyasha. Despitet eh fact I watch it..it is overated….
Underrated- Cooking Master Boy. It's pretty old, used to show on TV here in Malaysia bakc when I was 8. Stopped showing when I was 9.....And not to forget to mention One Piece.....

Pokemon, AKA "The never ending commercial for a dead video game franchise", has been dead since after Johto.
Overrated: Definitely Naruto.
Underrated: Urusei Yatsura and Berserk.
Overrated: Wolf Rain and Witch Hunter Robin, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Underrated: The Irresponsible Captain Tyler
Most Unintentionally Humorous Series that I like in spite of itself: Fist of the North Star.
C'mon, how can you not laugh at the scene where Ken punches the tank and the dialogue is something like:
YATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATA (voice actor pauses to take a breath) TATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATA
TATATATATATATATA YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
I glad somebody else has actually seen Tyler. A lot of people seem to prefer Nadesico and I can't understand for the life of me why.
The Big O was seriously underrated in Japan, but was thankfully rescued by Cartoon Network, who sponsored the second season. The second season was pretty good up until the awful, AWFUL, AWFUL final episode with it's "Hahaha, you expected a real ending? Sucker!" non-ending.
I really don't know of a series that pissed me off more with the way it ended as the Big O was such a great series until that point.
Well, I really wasn't expecting to know EVERYTHING with the last episode of season 2, since everything had been incredibly ambiguous before then. Hell, season 2's ending was better than the ending season 1 had. Plus, I kind of enjoy endings where you have to decide for yourself, even though sometimes it's just lazy story-telling.
And yes, Wolf's Rain and Witch Hunter Robin are pretty overrated. Wolf's Rain started up good, but each episode became more and more incoherent gibberish, until the finale when everyone dies for no reason. And I always found Witch Hunter Robin to be unforgivably BORING.
Overrated: CBB and NGE. CBB is a good show, but is so overrated as the "best thing ever omg!1111" it's ridiculous. NGE was just bad, in my opinion, of course…
/ducks the rocks thrown
Underrated: That's a tough one... someone mentioned Jojo's Bizzare Adventure and I agree with that. Maybe it's the shear size of the montrous manga that scares people off though  Others I would probably add are Berserk, and maybe Beck. Although Beck has grown some more fans due to the anime. It was way under the radar as just the manga.
what's CBB? Unless you're abbreviating "Cowboy BeBop"
Edit: also, Ghost in the Shell seems prett unextraordinary to me, except for the artwork/animation.
i like G gundam too…G gundam is not bored,it's fun to watch it...
This is probably English Speaking Net Fandom wise.
Overrated -
Naruto (I love it to pieces and it's one of my favourites, but I don't agree when some fans of it who are my friends act like other manga are bad in its comparison)
Underrated -
One Piece (Obviously)
Kino's Journey (I adore Kino's Journey to tiny little itty bitty pieces, and I can barely find any other fans online)
Any manga by Kaori Yuki (because I am a shameless fan who adores her and thinks her fanbase should be bigger)
Overated: InuYasha is such a painfully mediocre show with the fandom of the Beatles.
Naruto: This wouldn't be overated if it were ALL like the Chunnin exam.
Sadly….once you get past that story arc....its either very dull....or downright terrible.
Underated:
Big O: its incredibly easy to pass this one without really taking it all in, but once you actually get what the hells going on, its a very decent show thats worth your time.
Gundam G: a cheesy series, yet a very fun one. And one that goes nuts with plot twists near the end. And hey, I like that kind of ending(which I bet OP will have)
Shaman King: Also easy to pass up, since it DOES start out boring. But youv'e just got to soldier it, and before you know it, your enjoying reading this thing.
Dragonball manga(yes this includes Z): OK OK! We've established that this series is fairly shallow and has assloads of fights.....
Now..... in all honesty.....whats the harm in that? This series is flailed around by otakus as a step on the online social ladder, if you make fun of DB and DBZ your cool.
Well fuck otakus, this series may have the IQ of an ox, but its an ox wearing a sombrero and farting out streamers and confetti. In short, A VERY FUN OX.
I think Yu-Gi-Oh's Overrated..oO;; It's about a Freakin' Card Game, it has like the dumbest plot ever.. I swear.. if I hear someone Say "It's Time to Duel!" again, I'm gonna kill someone..xx
..and um.. fer Underrated.. um.. Shaman King&G Gundam.. but I think that was already said..oo

Well, I really wasn't expecting to know EVERYTHING with the last episode of season 2, since everything had been incredibly ambiguous before then.
Neither was I as I was really expecting there to be a season 3 at that point; I didn't imagine that they'd just kill the series dead like that.
Hell, season 2's ending was better than the ending season 1 had. Plus, I kind of enjoy endings where you have to decide for yourself, even though sometimes it's just lazy story-telling.

I'm not really fond of them myself; episodes that imply that the entire series was a dream or something similar pretty much means that any emotional investment made in the characters was for nothing.
In this case, it came across as more of a situation where they really didn't know how to end the series so they just chose not to, but simply ended it by implying that nothing ever really existed.
I really hated the first episode of season 2 as well; if I had actually seen that one before some of the other episodes, I probably wouldn't have watched that season despite my love for the first.
G Gundam is friggin awesome XD Just for the sheer cheezyness of it.
But my votes go to:
Overrated: Naruto
Underrated: One Piece
Who didn't see that coming. XD
I don't know if it's the most underrated, but one very underrated anime is Android Kikaider: The Animation. It's an adaption from good ol' Shotarou Ishinomori's early 70's manga (and later a 70's Sentai show). I remember when it aired on Adult Swim, and it took a lot of flack from people because the drawing style was very retro. I guess that's what sort of drew me into it a first. It does seem strange, but I thought the story was really touching and compelling. I own the whole series on DVD. I only wish it was more than 13 episodes + 4 episodes of OVA. The OVA really suffered because it was cut down from what should have been the second half of the series into 4 episodes, which tended to focus more on action and less on the actual story.
Overrated: Love Hina. BARF.
Underrated: Kodomo no Omocha, Serial Experiments Lain (or anything by Yoshitoshi aBe), anything by Anno Moyoko, anything by Yazawa Ai. And of course, One Piece, which for some reason is one of the least popular Shounen Jump manga over here. The judges at the con I recently went to DIDN'T KNOW WHO I WAS. (I was Movie 3 Nami). The five people at the whole con who watched One Piece said, "We haven't seen that far into the series. Who are you?" (Insert me pointing to my BIG OL NAMI TATTOO.) A couple people recignized Robin and not me. T_T

You should look at the Japanese version…not the 4kids version. It has a very complex plot involving the past, dark magic, and monsters. That's what the card game is actually about
Overrated: Naruto
The very fact that someone could possibly afford to host quality anime episodes of a series over a hundred episodes on a single website is frightening.
Underrated: Sonic X
It's not in my top ten, but if you've ever spent hours racing through Sonic Adventure, you should check out the fansubs. There's an entire story-arc based on the Sonic Adventure games later in the series.
Also, do yourself a favor and never watch the dub. The opening is horrendous and Knuckles' voice sounds like a prison rape.
Overrated: Pokemon/Digimon, Inuyasha, Naruto
Naruto would have been one of my favourite anime if most of the episodes were like ep 124…
Underrated: One Piece, Lupin the 3rd, City Hunter
Overrated:
Inuyasha - Because the plots REPEATS every few episodes
Naruto - I actually like the series, if only people are mature enough to handle cricitism.
Underrated:
One Piece - This is the BEST story ever!! But people got scared because of the HUGE amount of Chapters and Episodes. No one reconise my Nami (the first costume that we see of her when Luffy meets her)
Cooking Master Boy - Most people don't know about this series!!! But it's like Iron Chef but the battles are done longer than 60 mins and it's fun too. I love the 3rd opening song!!! Has so much meaning to it!!!
Shaman King - Seriously I love this Anime/Manga!!! But people usually don't give it a chance since the first few episodes/chapters are boring. But everying is GREAT when Anna is there!! XD
My thoughts exactly, Mei. I remember drawing Zoro in one of my notebooks, and of course, the biggest Evangelion geek had to ask who it was, three swords to the side.

Oddly enough, I took caffeine pills yesterday and the dub theme was the only thing I could hear, which…..kinda made me like it. I completely agree with the rest of the stuff you said, though.
