Chapter 862: The Intelligent Ones

So how will Capone stop katakuri from interfering with the luffy breaking the photo and the poison missile? Will this coo master really get tricked by the clones? Shouldn't he also see big mom getting shot before it happens?
The clones will probably be perfect to confuse him. He probably needs to focus on one specific target to read that person's future, but with everyone looking the same it will be hard to keep track of who he already "read" and who he didn't.
Has that idiot of Judge already realized what's going on? If not, he's more naive than I thought. You tell them, Reiju.
The Vinsmoke just saw Katakuri taking down the priest before he could shoot Sanji/Pudding. There's no way he can read that as the BM Pirates trying to kill them.

Miss Valentines Day got oneshotted with zero aftermath, Miss Doublefinger and Kalifa fought Nami, who isn't a physical fighter (they get a little scuffed-up looking when she defeats them, they aren't outright beaten), and Monet was spared by Zoro for being a woman in one of the most infamously controversial fights of the series.
I think the expectation, upon seeing Luffy declare that he would kick Pudding's ass, was a punch to the face similar to what every other arc antagonist gets (or what Sir Charloss got for shooting Hachi). Oda seriously can't show women getting into a physical fight, the kind the guys get into constantly, where they end up looking really fucked up and unattractive by the end.
Is that still controversial or is it in Zoro's nature to go easy on weaklings that are far weaker than him?

Fishman Island is fuzzy to me since I wasn't that invested, but I remember Zoro calling the octopus guy a pathetic "frog in a well" and he still sliced him to hell.

I can totally understand why Pudding's three eyes are seen as discriminatory. Some kids will always be snot-nosed brats and find a way to make fun of or tease another child for their own enjoyment, it's a common thing to see. As for Big Mom, I could easily see that even though she preaches about her land being the most diverse place in the world, there would be a few select races that would rub her the wrong way, kinda like the U.S.:ninja:
Plus, didn't she later learn just how useful Pudding's eye is for Poneglyph whispering? Maybe this was a time before BM knew how important she was to her goal of Pirate King/Queen. I'm pretty sure that after all this, most of everybody will accept the final result of Pudding after this arc and move on.

When I don't like a certain can of worms being opened up in a thread I like to open up a different can of worms that I don't mind discussing:
Are Yonkou commanders stronger than the likes of top tier Shichibukai? :ninja:
If Sanji can suddenly hold his own against Dogtooth I would be very impressed but also baffled a wee bit.

He didn't kill him but needed to incapacitate someone who was potentially going to hurt his nakama. Strawhats never kill their opponents. With Monet and Tashigi I think it's implied that he would have finished the job if Tashigi didn't interfere, he even says so as he walks away.

I told ya'll Pudding was good deep down. She's just a victim of circumstances baby.
Incredible Chapter, Luffy needs to talk to C.C. and B.B. about taking that mirror mirror fruit and giving it to Nami. -

Incredible Chapter, Luffy needs to talk to C.C. and B.B. about taking that mirror mirror fruit and giving it to Nami.Nah no devil fruit for Nami, otherwise we won't get the bikini segments and her swimming about in them :)
I don't even know why people have such high hopes when it comes to Pudding it was so obvious from the get go she wasn't that bad, she's definitely loving the importance that is placed on her by BM and is milking it, she probably has her powers unlocked just doesn't want her use to be diminished by giving BM what she wants.
-
I really enjoyed the chapter. I very casually read OP and didn't expect Pudding to fall to her knees due to someone appreciating her third eye. I can definitely see how people would see it as forced, but yeah I do find it realistic like RomanceDawn. There may be all kinds of quirks in One Piece, but having three eyes stands out currently.
The main aspect I enjoyed in Pudding's admittedly convenient defeat is that, yeah, it's Sanji's weakness that was going to get him killed that got him out of this.
I found it to be a poetic touch on an outwardly-cheery-but-secretly-grim event. Other than that, the action in this chapter was really good! Classic "our hope rests with Luffy" stuff with Reiju, love it! I also enjoyed every panel with Katakuri, Oda is drawing the crap out of that guy.

Katakuri looks like Zoro in some panels with his mean looking face and I do miss Zoro. The poetic touch you refer to is rather nice didn't think of it like that. Everyone here last week were worried his inability to contain himself in front of a pretty girl will get him hurt or even spoil the plan somewhat but it did the opposite, love it.

It wouldn't difficult adding a few moments hinting at Pudding's eye discrimination.
Some examples:
While Pudidng is talking to Big Mom about her ability, she puts aside her bangs. This shocks Big Mom and she yells at her "How many times have I told you to keep that damned eye covered! It feels like it stares into my soul".
When Pudding talks with Reiju, Reiju mocks the eye and mentions how creepy it is.
While Pudding gets her gown made, she mentions that one of the maidens helping her saw her eye and was shocked so she had to alter all of their memories.
There's rumors on the island of an "Ogre with a diamond on their forehead". If you look at the diamond he'll suck your out your soul! Maybe it's told to the kids of the island as a "that's why don't go out after dark!" story.
The idea that Pudding was bullied because she's the only one with three eyes is logical, but for readers who are used to far more ridiculous designs it needs to be mentioned why it's seen as creepy.
Oh well. Still loved the chapter though.
-
EDIT: Regarding the 3rd eye. The main issue is that to us readers, she is one of the least freaky characters on the island, which is in extreme contrast to this flashback. Only reason I can see why he did this is to showcase how unreasonably absurd bullying can be but her strong reaction came out of nowhere. Maybe he wanted to say that even the most beautiful girls are usually insecure about certain parts of their body…I have no idea
Thats exactly it. Kids can be assholes to each other for the pettiest reasons, so that parts not unbelievable. Its just that to us readers, Pudding is so comparatiely "normal" within the OP world, which contains weirdos like Wanze (a normal human being), that her being insecure about a third eye seems overblown.

It's not that the SHs don't kill, it's moreso that they'll beat their opponents but the other guys will just be knocked out. It's actually Oda that doesn't make the SHs kill their enemies most likely to give them a new, reformed life or something like that but not exactly. Don't forget that once upon a time, Zoro was butchering people left and right in Whiskey Peak.
-
For people thinking the Pudding getting bullied for having 3 eyes, how about Robin? Yes, this is Totland but they're also kids.
-
@Shobu:
I'm not referring to that, he says that he can't move recklessly cause an unstoppable situation is about to happen, which is the wedding cake being destroyed. He's smart enough to protect her mother and can't do much than that… maybe the title goes for him. Still, he got what would happen to the cake.
The only grasp of Kenbunshoku aside of life beings is the Voice of all things. But Karakuri apparently catches the attempt within spacetime, nothing of the sort presented before, that's what i meant.
Because luffy was in it, he sensed someone was to ruin it
-
Fishman Island is fuzzy to me since I wasn't that invested, but I remember Zoro calling the octopus guy a pathetic "frog in a well" and he still sliced him to hell.
Zoro gave Hyozou a chance to walk away but when he tried his sneak attack Zoro took him out. Very much how Zoro dealt with monet.
I told ya'll Pudding was good deep down. She's just a victim of circumstances baby.
Incredible Chapter, Luffy needs to talk to C.C. and B.B. about taking that mirror mirror fruit and giving it to Nami.I wouldn't say good, she still has and still wants to pull of some bad things. We can sympathize a little as we've all been there before(not me however, I have always been known as Romance the Handsome) but I wouldn't say she's good. Of course this could be a road to redemption, but I don't see that in the cards. At least not yet and I sure hope not.

Half a day and there's already 11 pages? Normally that's end of week chapter thread length.

Yeah, that's so sexist. I want to see women beaten up to pulp. Go go go! Post me pictures of some fine violence towards women, thanks.
You can't be serious.Well I think violence against all genders ain't a good thing - not worse if it's a man or woman. But in a series all about super-powered insano-pirate warriors then yes it would be "equal" treatment to let them have the same dignity and respect on the battlefield. That being namely they're allowed to have these intense bloody "passionate" brawls full of cool powers & powerful emotions the same as the men constantly have to go through. In a world where women can be incredibly powerful physically it's just demeaning to consider them lesser combatants for no real reason.
Also to anyone talking about how women are weaker than men physically - sure in the real world on average that's true. But in One Piece the laws of biology are so irrelevant that it's laughable to bring them up. A regular human would've likely been killed if not seriously wounded by the punch Luffy used on the Sea King in chapter 1 - when you get to people with the power of the Yonko & their crews it's just silly to bring up "biological" reasons for why these characters should be weaker/stronger etc.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
The thing that bugs me is that there's no reason it couldn't be more common. It's not that the intended audience cares (and it's worth pointing out that OP, and Jump in general, has massive female readership in Japan), they just want to see cool fights. It's the authors and editors that seem to think it's their solemn duty to put women on a pedestal.
And again, if OP were like Toriko, where female characters are barely ever present, I'd have no complaints. My issue is that Oda consistently writes insultingly weak, overly emotional, trash-tier female characters that are worse than having no women at all.
I'd have liked Punk Hazard a lot more if it didn't include the belittling of Tashigi, Dressrosa would've been better without Rebecca, and now I'm being distracted from how cool this arc has been by Pudding's lovey-dovey meltdown.
Yeah I completely agree. I respect Oda's statement that he's writing for himself as a teenager as opposed to more generally "for boys." Still over half the Jump readership is girls & at this point One Piece is such a massive national & international sucess with such a broad audience that it does feel kinda shitty to keep shafting all these female characters. Dressrosa was particularly egregious with how it (At the time - this arc's surpassed it) introduced the most new female characters & then proceeded to find ways to ensure they all (minus Jora/Jolla - the "ugly" one) didn't have to fight. Robin didn't even get a battle.
But anyways I'm not too irked by the stuff this chapter - but I certainly will be if this "flashback" is used as a way to completely justify/redeem Pudding. I'm okay with her having mixed feelings - that's even cool - but this better not be the set-up to Pudding becoming a "good guy." She still wants to kill Sanji & clearly has killed many times in the past - even as a child. Sure this makes us feel some empathy for her (to be fair I felt bad for Doffy & Senor Pink in Dressrosa) but that doesn't mean she should get away scott-free for all this.

That reminds me of when Pokemon first season had non-Pokemon fishes that people used to catch and cook but they completely scrapped that in subsequent seasons. One Piece was sort of still finding it's feet back then.

So are we taking the multiple Luffy's as the rest of the gang being changed with Brulee's ability? Because there's at least 12-16 Luffy's jumping out of that cake. Going by Jimbei's inclusion of the two BM hostages they had 10, take away Sanji and you have 9. One of them is likely the real Luffy so that brings it to 8. If you count the other named characters who would be inside Capone, it only really leaves Chiffon, who could possibly be still inside Capone with Pez(Though the one Luffy has the same nose as her), and we saw Vito and Gotti with Capone doing their guard duty work, outside of Capone. Gastino is supposed to be outside entering from the ceiling(Though we just saw him in Capone, so he may leave during this chaos, fly up with the mirror and Brulee.
Of course we could have a bunch of Capon's grunts disguised as Luffy too, so I'm very interested in the inevitable flashback we get next chapter of Luffy telling Brulee his entrance plan.
-
Clearly many people had fallen in love with Pudding the despicable and do not like the fact that we now have reasons to sympathize with her, despite her evil actions.
But when you think of it, what has happened now is that Pudding was defeated by Sanji. The hard armour she had created around herself was shattered effortlessly by words of sincere appreciation for her beauty, which she had been waiting for her whole life.Oda here set Sanji up against an opponent who wanted to use his weak spot for women to fool him and possibly kill him. Surprisingly, Sanji's blatant weakness was actually the key to bringing Pudding's hidden weakness to the surface.
Of course this is exceedingly convenient, but One Piece is a manga in which fate plays a very important part: if that were not the case, Luffy would have been killed by Bagy back in Logtown. Regardless of whether you like it or not, this isn't going to change
(on a side note, I hate that Usop is always going to be Usop; but I have finally come to terms with that). This is also the most pleasant resolution to the Sanji assassination attempt that I could imagine. Sanji could have easily been shot or, after learning about the plan, he could have easily dodged Pudding's shot; instead, he broke her will and left her defenseless simply by saying his line. In addition to that, he avoided Potato Starch's bullet, which is one of the most badass things he could have done. Regardless of the small imperfections in the story that other people pointed out, this chapter made my day even before its ending with the dozen Luffys: 9/10.
hell yea
Its like people are so worried about whether pudding is still bad they completely ignore it from sanji's side, him breaking her defense not with a kiss or perving out or anything stupid but by kind words. She being so used to the normal reaction (she has three eyes, the only one apparently on the island ) that she's rendered defeated when she hears the exact opposite. I think sanji would have still dodged if she shot at him as he was in control but just a simple sentence causing these fractures was much better than I thought he would have went.
It's also a big parallel to Gin.
-
the two really interesting things for me from this chap are 1-how the cake emerged, is that chef a devil fruit user?? and 2, now the tamatebako seems more like a wild card than an instrument of obvious plot-purposes, I mean, that lil box's explosion aint gonna scratch BM, now I'm really, really, really thinkin that the Tamatebako will take down Pudding.

What other amazing dodges have we had in One Piece?
My new favorite is this one from Sanji but my other favorite is when Shanks dodged a projectile from Whitebeard while cross-legged.

I think it's in zoro's character to slice her if tashigi hadnt gotten in the way
But I have other issues with tashigi in that nvm them

awesome chapter i would love to see a suprising charecter that was invited to the ceremony and to see how they manage to get out alive

I also wouldnt expect a total redemption from pudding but maybe a half one. Viola was evil for less than a few chapters, baby 5 was following around anyone so her turning wasnt a big shock. Pudding has had a buildup as a damaged person and she said she still wamted to kill him so we may still get a pudding vs nami fight
-
I don't quite remember from which brand/bank, but there's a credit card with a slogan that says 'Always present at your main events' Lmao, that fits so much to Luffy now.

Also I don't see how it is "showing respect", can you explain that part to me? -
Also quick googling: there's 39 daughters, but Pudding is only #35. So she has four younger sisters.

Getting bullied in Totland for having three eyes? That's like getting fired from Apple for being gay.
i guess you dont know kids much. all it takes is one difference, especially if you're the only one.

Judging by their faces, at least some of the clones are jungle animals, just like the first time. They don't stand a chance in combat and will be picked off one by one as Big Mom's crew attempts to identify the real Luffy, so they're serving as a distraction while the rest of the team does their work. Disguising everyone as the highest priority target would endanger them and defeat the purpose.

I… don't know what to think about another heel turn by Pudding. Deciding whether it's a great thing or just annoying.
-
It makes no sense for her to be disgusted by it considering that she would have to willingly get laid by a three eyed man to have Pudding, and just a few chapters before this she was shown creaming her pants with joy at the prospect of Pudding's 3rd eye awakening a remarkable power that can help her achieve one of her dreams. To which Pudding said that Big Mom asks about her awakening her power like that all the time. I'd even be willing to accept Pudding being singled out in a country where every species in the world coexists since she'd be the only one with 3 eyes, if Oda was at least consistent with how Big Mom thought of her.
But now the woman who had sex with Pound is going "Ew that's gross" to the trait of a child she presumably had for the express purpose of utilizing that trait to achieve an extraordinary feat that almost no one else in the world can achieve.
Big mom is a selfish self serving person. She "loves" pudding for what pudding can do for her. However big mom doesn't really care about her kids. She tortured her own daughter bc she LOOKED like someone (another daughter) who betrayed her. Also, in the beginning you'll see that the kids fear big mom and it's also why opera lied.
It's a childish sentiment to believe you have to like something to sleep with them. Slave masters use to rape their slaves and still thought of them as disgusting and still hated their seed.
-
The usual chapter notes: *I should get to doing the volume 1 I missed last week.
That cover page is very endearing. I would like to know how the hat exchange went about between Roger and Shanks. I wonder if Shanks is actually a D. Although I would prefer if he weren't. I love when ~normal~ people achieve great things without genetic/inherited attributes.
Like I already said, FISHMAN SLAP and Jimbe banging Luffy against the floor was such a great scene. It is everything I would imagine and better. Chopper running to ask for meat. I bet Jimbe will start making plans solely to wake Luffy up from now on.
That wedding cake entrance was expectacular, and to think that it would get obliterated in the same chapter. I like that they held the ceremony on top of it. The fact that Luffy is eating only means that meat was the only way to get him up. This chapter builds up nicely, in term of comedy and impact until I get to the unveiling part. Sigh…
Besides the very similar build up like Viola's. It is not that I wouldn't believe that Pudding was bullied and she became jaded as she grew up. However, the resolution of this problem is so weak.
I call it weak because having dealt with loved ones with significant trauma, it is NEVER ever that easy to crack their shell. It takes months and years of constant support, and encouragement, not a one liner. Especially such a superficial one. Some other people have commented on it but this yells: "All that you need to fix stuff, is to tell people they are beautiful." I just don't like this development, especially when we have had such powerful messages believing in yourself and disregarding what other people say: Chopper.
That's my main problem with Sanji's chivalry and pervy attitude. The way it is portrayed is not something to admire. Sanji's character would be much more powerful if it was to everyone, because it seems like his "kinder than anyone" is very selective and always to gain approval and compliments from women.
I think it is valid that people are curious on why would anyone bully Big Mom's kids. Pudding was being built to be an interesting character, but now...well, let's see what happens.
But after all that bla bla. Seeing Sanji evade jellybeans was really cool. And I do hope he has some sort of confrontation with Katakuri, I imagine him next chapter flying down with Pudding in his arms.
The fact the Katakuri cannot even move, just proves that Luffy is a genius of chaos. Not even predicting the future will help him. Luffy does indeed know how to make an entrance.
Great chapter, I just wish Puddings was emotionally stronger.
-
I wouldnt jump off a cliff either way over pudding's disarming…oda wont likely go with a Viola or baby 5 retread and probably go for more of a gin thing maybe nami gets a fight or reiju, who knows. They arent leaving WCI next chapter, oda hasnt had her cry while telling sanji to save her, the behavior of big mom isnt that nonunderstandable since she said it while passing and didnt mean to be offensive, it's honestly a lot like luffy's off the cuff moments where he tells people things, like when igaram where's his disguise for instance. Just blurting out his thoughts, no filter.
While some may say they live on whole cake island where trees are alive, what's the deal with having a third eye, I would say 1. This treatment is from big mom's children, so if he is the only one with a third eye she could very well be singled out, maybe the set up isnt as clear or set up as it seems but I would need to reread to be sure it wasnt subtly teased. 2. It's more proof of big mom's controlling nature and lax parenting biting her in the ass. 3. It's a similiar whim by sanji, which is from his heart as he just says it, that freezes her up, her anger and sadness from the past cause her to tear up even though she still wants to kill him, a part of her cant believe she is hearing the words and the emotional gut punch really gets her. And its not perverted or him stealing a kiss or anything just a kind statement spurred from an innocent attraction, sanji's chivalry at it's best here.
I do hope oda doesnt fully redeem her and think he'll hold bac a little cmpared to viola who was never really bad and quickly turned or baby 5 who wasnt that major of a deal and had a quirk that allowed her to betray easily. Im seeing a gin where she doesn flip good but questions herself and al that because of sanji.
-
Huh.
-
I asked this in Totalnd thread: but does anyone think that Big Mom just grabs the soul of her husbands, and then mixes it up with her own to form her babies?
-
@.access:
As much as this arc doesn't seem to deserve it, I am going to give Oda the benefit of the doubt here.
Maybe Pudding memory powers are at play here? She was bullied because she was different, so she used her powers to make BM think she was her daughter. When she found out that wasn't enough for BM to like her, she used the powers again to make BM think the third eye was useful having the power to read poneglyphs.
I too think Pudding's memory powers are important on this issue. There are too many incoherences for her powers to not be the cause of a few of them. I specially like your theory about her ability to read poneglyphs being made up. Do the three-eye tribe actually exists?
-
Is the third eye, like the third nipple in Mallrats?
-
I don't think I have a choice but to clock this chapter as my favorite.
-
Yeah, to me injuries are just neccesary evil for characters to prove and showcase their strength.

Also I don't see how it is "showing respect", can you explain that part to me?I get that I'm being a little exaggerated - but when I say characters receive "dignity and respect" on the battlefield, I'm referring to how the narrative treats them, not how other characters necessarily respond to them. What I mean is that One Piece is a "battle shounen," where creative and exciting fight scenes are a cornerstone of the series. In a series like this, characters showing their conviction/personality/drive etc through battles is an important part of the story. Oda plays with this concept and sets these violent confrontations in a whole number of ways, but nevertheless characters battling each other is a staple. In a world with characters of this power & a series where fights are so central, it just seems like the female characters are placed on a lesser pedestal when they aren't allowed to be a part of that. Obviously there are other hugely important parts of the series & characters - such as character design, personality interactions & developments, plot threads, etc but its inarguable that these marquee end-of-arc battles are a very important part of the series' structure & appeal

As in the whole soul?
Well no, part of it also works, 4.5 months each. Pound might be the exception but I doubt he was the only one left alive.
