Hmm, I was going to complain about the arm not being explained, but if Oda intends to reveal it later then I guess he didn't want to reveal it now. Must be related to the SMILE stuff.
Anyway, the first episode was really good, the second episode was alright, and this third episode was honestly pretty meh. Not nearly as bad as the likes of Little East Blue or Silver Mine, mind you, but still sad to see potential once again screwed up in fillers. I liked these three rookies and I don't think they should have punked Luffy by any means, but it would have been nice if they could have lasted more than a few seconds. That vice admiral was a joke as well.
They probably should have tried to expand this for another 3 episodes or so by expanding the fights a bit with Nami, Chopper, and Carrot. And maybe had Brook and Pedro get in on the action a bit. I doubt this will be much of a buffer to help the pacing in Whole Cake Island.
It does not matter how long filler is. eps keep covering only one chapter any ways.
I did not like how they made pedro help eat all the food at the end. HE IS A NICE GUY AND HE WOULD NOT DO THAT.
My best guess relating to the arm is something Vegapunk related. Given how early he has the arm, it seems like it was a mini-Punk Hazard incident and he was given some sort of prototype SMILE. Given that Grount apparently cannot turn his arm back into a normal arm even after becoming a prodigy marine. Momo can at least change back, though at random and the Gifters also seem to control their arm morphing.
Also a bit let down here in terms of the final fight. Toei still is stuck with the idea of "tug of war" climaxes and it still doesn't look quite right. At least to Toei Caesar grappling made some sense.
I did like the name moment where she says she can do more than just make lightning. She does tend to showcase that power too much, so it was nice to see her have to mix it up for a change, including possibly the first depiction of "gust sword" which may or may not be a filler attack.
To this day I still say Luffy struggling for a few seconds against Doflamingo was fine. I know super manga fanboys don't like it but given how powerful Doffy is it's something I can buy and believe. Now I understand the complaints when it came to Hordy Jones and Caesar much more.
Doffy wasn't bad, just wholly unnecessary and I agree, it at least makes sense. The same with Don Chinjoa. The final clash got dragged out in the anime, but it was Chinjao, so in made sense to struggle. Hardly the worst offenders in terms of padding.
Problem with this here is that I don't think Grount really should have been able to be that much of a match, even with the mystery monster arm. It's beneath even the likes of Caesar's ass-pull counterattack. Not sure about Hody. Been way too long since I last saw it.
That and it's just become too frequent lately as a means of artificially lenghtening a fight. In particular it was too similar to the Doffy KO
I was glad that Film Gold moved away from that element temporarily. Even Silver Mine had that going for it, though final clash aside this filler arc is still much better than that mess.
Until this episode I was mistakenly thinking that guy's name was Grout.
This episode was pretty boring. The arm thing was a bit wonky to me. I don't see the benefit in adding this arm on a filler character with no explanation behind it.
Grount's arm is from a Zoan Devil Fruit (if there isn't an English version out there, the text says that they consulted with Oda to give Grount an animal-based ability, with the kanji for that being the same kanji for Zoan (動物系))
Though I could definitely see this being some strange kind of Zoan.
Overall, a decent episode in the Marine Humiliation Conga Arc…er, Marine Rookie Arc. I enjoyed Grount's power and him being able to briefly overwhelm Luffy, even though I wish their battle was a lot longer. Bonham's talk with him in the beginning of the episode was a highlight. The stuff with the Straw Hats and Prodi's men felt rather dumb though, and ultimately the final battle didn't fully satisfy.
