Honestly, if hair and makeup dialed back the ridiculous colors/wigs, this would be more watchable. They’re trying to make it look like an anime, which is always the worst adaptation choice. The outfitting looks bizarre.

I mean, isn't One Piece ridiculous and bizarre to begin with

The Strawhats are wearing modern clothes for the most part. Luffy even looks to be switching things up.

1 to 1 faithfulness will actually kill this really fast. I actually won't mind luffy being flawed and the crew, as any sane and reasonable person does, have actual doubts on his ability as a captain and he'l prove it over time to them and the audience. It makes sense to use the other characters as the lens of the audience, who have never watched the series, to view him. Because if we are talking about the general public who is used to western TV, it makes zero to no sense to like a character that borderlines on annoying if here were to be act like that in real life. Once again, Luffy works in manga and anime because of the medium but by far the greatest challenge is translating him into live action. And if that fails because it is too faithful, then this show goes. The reason behind why social media is reacting on how Luffy felt off is precisely because if someone talks like an anime or manga character to you in real life, you would hate him pretty fast. And he is the most cartoon of them all.

I wonder who Fullbody is pointing that pistol at in the one shot. I really can't tell who it is (Django is the closest to the colour scheme). Also I am still very convinced that Smoker and Tashigi have been cut from this LA and Garp is taking their place. It may have just been from the trailer but it does look like Garp's ship fires on the Going Merry. The barrel scene also being in daylight kind of implies that Dragon also won't be appearing either.
-
I thought this looked better than I expected, but time will tell.
Will probably watch it with my wife when it comes out.
-
@black-leg-jex Dude, I didn't even notice Fullbody!
-
I liked the teaser, it's actually closer to the look and feel of the anime than I expected it to be. I kinda wish it would have actually focused more on the mystery and adventure aspect of the show. For some reason, I expected the classic Gold Roger intro for the trailer, but maybe they are saving that for the next trailer. It's hard to judge if this looks appealing for potential viewers who don't know the manga or anime. The Lord of the Coast looks pretty awesome btw.
-
Why they made her wear a wig ????????
Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ???
and the color is fucked everywhere which ironically supposed to be the easy part
also the move calling should've been removed entirely from the start
for this to work you don't need to copy the existing material, make your own unique style in every detail without straying too far from the source.
-
This somewhat surprises me. If nothing else it LOOKS lovely. Sets, designs, and costumes, I mean. Nami looks boring, but her first outfit was never striking past her giant boobs, which is not something to include in live-action. And please loose the wig and just dye it. Or get a better wig (someone call a drag queen!).
But will that extend to the story? The acting? It's hard to see with so little, other than I really like how Zoro and Sanji's actors are looking (Zoro is HOT). And so far I have nothing against Luffy's actor, it's just so hard to see anything Luffy and not hear Mayumi Tanaka's voice come. out. She's like, IS Luffy. All the VA are, but Luffy in particular.
Sadly, the one, really dumb thing I saw? GumGum Pistol.
-
@black-leg-jex For some reason I'm thinking it's either Patty or Carne
-
My expectations were pretty low but earlier today I got excited as the anticipation built up. Once I watched the trailer, I couldn't help but feel like something was off. I felt disappointed and was trying to figure out why. Is it that I'm just biased towards animation?
After a couple hours of rewatching the trailer, I think I know why. My main issue is with the costumes and colors. Sometimes it commits to translating the imagery over to live action to make it convincing and sometimes it doesn't, making it look awkward. Y'know when we talked about why they won't have 10 foot tall characters and why Merry's design was changed to be a bit more realistic? I get why they'd ultimately do that at the end of the day since the point of this show is to be a realistic take of the story and Merry can't look like a plastic toy... but why didn't they do that for some of the outfits? Sometimes it looks like people dressed up in cosplay or in Spirit Halloween costumes and wigs for a YouTube fan film... and at other points it looks completely fine, or amazing even. Despite the inconsistency with the costume designs, at least the surroundings look great.
But the more I watch it the more desensitized I get. I'm still looking forward to watching this and I want it to be good so I'll be sure to binge it when it releases. Here's hoping it'll be amazing.
-
I give the trailer a solid 7.
Totally down with Usopp and Buggy...Buggy is awesome actually.
Love Sanji too, but he falls a bit short because of the eyebrows, as I think it is something that could move into the adaptation.
Acting wise Luffy is OK-ish, I just feel that the actor has hard facial traits and he looks too older than he should be.
Nami's wig is horrendous and I totally do not feel Zoro's character.Regarding the adatation in itself...I would have heavily filtered the photography, in a 300-ish way, just to underline that it is something that comes from a comic/manga, as it would have helped a lot with the perception that this doesn't even tries to be life-alike
-
Had no expectations but it's funny seeing this actually existing. I don't like the guy playing Luffy's accent for the role and I echo some of the stuff about it looking like cosplay or "fake". Contrary to D.aelthasaar's post, I think it looks too filtered for some reason. I'm not big on things like color grading in general (at least to the extent it's done in a lot of movies) and despite a lot of this seeming to be actually built sets (they were touting that a lot before) everything still looks fake. Most of the characters from the trailer look off too. I don't know why this exists.
-
It looks pretty good.
Buggy feels a bit too creepy horror like, are they going for IT here? The animation for gomu no looks as ridiculous as you expect in live action, they may have to keep it as rare as they can. For sure all the crazy moves in his manga/anime fights are out of question here.
Now thing is in 80 hours 10 seasons they will have to do as much as the anime does in what, 10 times that???
All people familiar with one piece should like this. Now it may be hard to get anyone else on board.
-
Yeah alright, I'll move into the 'cautiously optimistic' camp. The amount of practical sets and props was really pleasing, and while it's definitely not (and was never going to be) the One Piece that plays out in my head when I read the manga, the actors and designers obviously have a strong vision for their version of this world and its characters.
I wish they could've given Usopp and Sanji at least one line each for the trailer though. I'd liked to have seen more of the action too. A lot of the snippets here were mostly low to no contact spinning around. If there's one thing One Piece as manga does well it's selling a moment of impact, so I want to see them making the big hits feel like they count.
This series was never going to be a replacement for or equivalent to the manga, but as a high budget homage it looks like it's got its heart in the right place and has enough real passion from the crew to be a fun watch.
We can only hope that Netflix gives it the chance it needs to take off. I dread to think that kind of viewer metrics they're holding a second season hostage to. And a series like this needs to be advertised just right for general audiences to get that the goofier, cheesier elements of its tone are part of the experience and there to be embraced, meanwhile Netflix seems to prefer barely advertising at all and hoping word of mouth happens on its own.
-
Still undecided whether to watch this. The series might not have the same place in my heart as it once had, but inviting a total cringefest to my Once Piece memories is probably not something I need right now.
Mind that this is the trailer, material they deem to be A++.Lord of the Coast does look pretty great, though. Also digging Buggy and Usopp.
-
ohh man that looked kinda cheap and bad. and the quips did not work. nor that weird-sincere-in-a-wrong-way speech from Luffy.
-
Where's Luffy's scar? Did i just missed it?
-
@FatDogForMidTerms It's there. In the first close-up shot of Luffy's face.

Mixed bag trailer.
The stretching effect looks very bad, but that was to be expected. If Marvel can't get it right, One Piece never stood a chance. Maybe if you speed it up, it will be less noticeable.
Some of the wigs and costumes look absolutely terrible.
There is a weird tint in most of the scenes. It's not really the "Breaking Bad Mexico Filter", but something is off. I'm not knowledgable enough to pinpoint it.
Luffy's line delivery sounds pretty bad. But that could be a trailer thing.
Buggy looks great.
The bit with Zoro's sword fight seems good.
Ships and sea king look decent.
-
Yup, that filter is just atrocious.
Some costumes look like mediocre cosplay. (there were some cool costumes also, to be fair.)
I still can't get over Luffy's horrible 2010 era Marvel quip. So baddddddddddddd
-
"i sense some tension in the crew" okay dreamworks guy
-
I get the feeling the MCU has really ruined what banter is for some people. That line from Luffy is not really a quip.

Exactly, Bebop looked very well, perhaps better than the One Piece trailer, but ignoring the story the final product just didn't look as great.
Luffy has some weird vibes going on with his clothing. The leather strap for the straw hat is a bit much, looks like he's wearing a helmet in some scenes. Paired with the shoes and the different t-shirts seen in the trailer, he loses the care-free bohemian feel of the original character.
In general all the clothing looks too clean-cut without any signs of wear or texture, which in-turn makes much of it looks quite cheap (similar thing with Bebop), but Nami gets it right with the skirt.
-
I feel like "all the best material is in the trailer" is a weird myth the '10s came up with that simply won't die, along with "review embargoes means product is bad".
-
well at least you can binge it so the verdict will come sooner than later and people won't be coping each week if its somewhere in between.
-
For what it's worth, almost everyone in Reddit's OP community is decimating the trailer right now. They are not happy with it.
...admittedly those guys suck but it's fascinating to see such a huge volume dismissal.
-
have we ever heard luffy narrating something about himself ?
there should be a dedicated narrator not fucking luffy.
-
Putting dialogue over a trailer does not mean that's in-episode narration. It could very much just be a scene he has with Koby or Zoro.
Also a dedicated narrator in a live episode tv series would be fucking awful.
-
They certainly took some liberties with the script. You can see Luffy is a bit more mature, while still being a goof. Crew dynamic seems a bit worse (though it wasn't exactly great back in EB, with Zoro telling Luffy he'd kill him if he got in the way of his dream, and Nami not getting along with anyone). I suspect some choices are deliberate to appeal more to a general audience, while some are to make the plot work sine they are adapting 100 chapters in 10 hours. I. e., since they don't have multi episode arcs for each character, they will wait until Arlong Park to make them really solve their interpersonal issues and become a real crew. This is completely different than the manga, but is normal writing for a TV show season.
Honestly I'm very open minded. I don't need a panel to panel adaptation of OP. Heck, I don't even think it has to capture every major plot point and theme. If they use OP to make something that is different but is still good on its own, I'm down. The trailer looks like it could pull that off.
-
I feel almost privileged to be a dub-and sub-lover. Mayumi Tanaka is a perfect Luffy in my opinion, but I can enjoy Colleen's interpretation and other ones as well. (It doesn't hurt that there are some voices I think are slightly better in the dub) I'm pretty excited to really get a chance to see Inaki's interpretation in full.

That is not the impression I get from going on r/onepiece. All positive posts are upvoted and you have to sort by controversial to get the negative ones. They are there, but they aren't getting upvoted to the same degree and many have negative karma. The top 8 posts are positive about the live action and there isn't a negative one until the 9th.

Italian dub, which I usually find very cringe, so that I watch series in original language, is incredibly better than the original, especially for Luffy and Zoro.
Zoro has a deeper voice and Luffy has a more carefree vibe -
The trailer looked... fine?
The sets are very good, the characters are mostly on point, Lord of the Coast looked great, and I really don't mind them changing Luffy or Zoro's characterization a little bit to make them more grounded, or changing the humor to be a bit more mainstream. But this mostly felt like One Piece to me.
The two things I didn't like are:
-the lighting, it's way too yellow/brown, the One Piece world should be colorful and vibrant, and it's even more of a weird decision because the characters fully embrace the goofy vibes instead,
-and the Gum Gum Pistol, the effect looks fine but the composition of the shot is weird. Alvida (?) looks like she's just standing there waiting to get punched in the face.
But overall this looked pretty good, even fresh actually, I'm definitely going to watch it.
I'd also be more interested in the reactions of people who weren't already familiar with One Piece. -
I have a standing agreement with some old anime-watching friends that we'd get together and check this out when it drops, and I absolutely dread the amount of pseudo and full on racist criticisms that are sure to be deployed when that happens. Maybe I'll just hold off on showing them the trailer.

Luffy's hat does have a strap too though. How do you think he keeps it hanging on his back?
But for artistic convenience, Oda doesn't draw it often. -
Sanji's eyebrows are too much but zoro can keep grass on his head...

Could be! I'm going by the comments and not by the upvotes. Most comments trash the show but yeah, the top ones to be upvoted are positive!

The CGI isn't a problem for me, but I do think the attack against Alvida isn't working visually imo. It needs to be a bit more animated, or better yet, he needs to put a lot more into it to really sell that he's a rubber man, punching it back so far that when it snaps back to hit her she'll be sent flying. It is just a clip, so it may look better later, but I don't think it's on this level:
On the other hand, the Luffy action at the 59 second mark looks great. Knowing who's involved, I'm confident that it'll be good as a whole.
To give credit where credit is due, the fist clench is on point.
-
I think I'm still in shocked seeing One Piece in live action. But I do like Zoro in this. Luffy is... Not manga Luffy but it can still work. I'll accept this as a separate universe (like Marvel's 616 and the MCU) and give it a chance.
-
@hideoushorrendous I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just for the trailer.
-
Found the German version of the trailer, they decided to go with the anime voice actors, works better for me than the English trailer.
Might even watch the German dub. Gosh maybe we get the iconic first opening again. That would be fantastic.
I wonder if every Dub will try to recruit their anime voice actors or go with new ones. -
I like some of the lines better in german "Ever since I was a kid. the sea's been calling -> Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to go out to sea" sounds more like something Luffy would say.
"All I need is a loyal crew -> All I need is a brave crew" Not super in love with either, but I think Luffy saying he wants a loyal crew feels more off, cause Luffy isn't looking for people who are loyal to him, people are just naturally loyal to him. Think I would've just kept it as "All I need is a crew", but I'll admit it's a bit nitpicky. Right now the dialogue is my main concern but overall I'm more positive than I thought I'd be. -

Typical german dub lifting everything to another level. It really cannot be understated how hard a professional voice actor can salvage mediocre or downright poor acting, and this adaptation needs all the help it can get.
Huge news for me, will definitely watch it now. -
That actually looked pretty decent!
Was really unsure about this adaptation, I felt One Piece was just too cartoony to translate into live action, but now I'm cautiously optimistic.
Now they just need to avoid pulling a Bebop and nail the storytelling as well as the visuals. -
@andre the juiciest parts actually goes further down the thread. The top upvoted posts does make the community look optimistic but the numerous comment chain and engagement below becomes actually painful to read. This is coupled with new threads being started and people chiming into said threads with a negative outlook. And if we look at twitter, it can actually give you cancer if you try hard enough.
The top posts aren't exactly full-on hyped either, it's a mix of slight optimism, cautiousness and neutrality. Or the post will be discussing about "funny element from anime/manga" with no concrete thoughts on what was shown. Standard Reddit flair. That is not exactly a bad sign but it shows you where the community is at: "I'm ready to scream I told you so if this flops" and a refusal to take a side or place their bets. There's an air of distrust and that is reasonable given what we know of Netflix, Bepop, the Producer, etc.
This series will not be judged as a standalone no matter how good it might be, and that will be sad. People are actually more excited to see this flop, to make memes out of this, to ride whatever TikTok video that is going to laugh at it, and to be the first ones that call out for "inaccurate portrayal this or that" for internet points rather than take it as a separate entity or to be objective enough to judge it fairly. I don't want to say that it is because a lot of One Piece fans are now much younger than we were 10 years ago or they have migrated to the community just because it is the trending thing to do (skipping arcs just to join a community to be "In" the next big thing) , but it certainly is. And unfortunately, they make up a significant part of the audience to be impressed upon.
I don't even know what the point of this post is and the circles I'm going but if this fails even if people genuinely can see the good in it, it is because the series has become way too big and the internet culture today of being cynical and bandwagoning, without even caring to form your own thoughts, will be insufferable to experience if and when it does come.
