It's going to depress me that La La Land will win any of this.

Of the ones up for best, I've only seen that trash, Hell or High Water, and Moonlight. The latter two were pretty incredible at what they were doing, though they were doing two different things. Out of the three, I think Moonlight deserves the win, for both tackling an unpopular subject matter, and portraying it in a really compelling way.

Other categories I've got an opinion on:

The Lobster's up for original screenplay, I guess. I thought the movie was really disjointed and bad tbh, which sucks since I like the core idea. The movie just meanders a lot, and never ends up saying anything about it.

Visual effects should go to Dr. Strange. They did some really incredible and downright new things in action cinema. Rogue One was pretty standard, and Kubo, though masterful in its own way, doesn't go that much further than what the studio's done before with stop motion. Haven't seen the other two, but if the Jungle Book is as good as people said it was, then they must have done a stellar job on the animals.

If best animated movie doesn't go to Zootopia, I am going to eat the Oscar before anyone else can collect it.

Why isn't Moana up for best score? It was a way better musical than La La Land.

I kind of wish Moana's "Shiny" got up for best song, since it's so interesting and catchy, but I doubt the judges would recognize that in it, and they'll probably give it to some unmemorable dreck from La La Land.

Of the movies selected for best picture, I've only seen La La Land, so I guess I don't have much of a stake in who wins this year.

As for the animated movie, I'd like it if Kubo would win, but I know it's gonna go to Zootopia.

Also, this is one of the few times I've seen one of the nominated documentaries, OJ: Made in America. I haven't seen the others, mind you, but OJ definitely deserves a win (…uh, the documentary, I mean)

I think this is the first time EVER that I've not seen a single film nominated for best film. I voted for Hell or Highwater anyway based on trailers and plot only.

I've seen Hidden Figures; it was really good but I don't know how it compares to the rest of the field.

The only Best Pic nomination I've seen is Arrival, and even if it doesn't win I'm just happy to see it nominated. I'm always eager to see sci-fi movies get recognition, especially when said movies trust the audience to make the connections in the movie.

I haven't seen La La Land, but I agree that Moana has an impressive score and I'm surprised it's not nominated. I could listen to Jemaine Clement's voice (love child of Tim Curry and David Bowie) all day. And I was impressed with The Rock's singing in "You're Welcome".

The Red Turtle was the best animated of 2016. While the other movies may be stronger when it comes to the writing-department, Red Turtle was by far the strongest when it comes to visuals, and it's medium.

I need to get to watching all of these. I've been so caught up in catching up on older backlogs, that I haven't even had a chance to watch one of this year's Best Picture nominations (in the poll).

I Haven't seen Kubo or Deepwater, but the other 3 all had very impressive visual effects. Jungle Book is a huge step up though, in my opinion, because of the various animals.

I don't know how but I completely forgot about Zootopia and as much as I loved "Moana" I really enjoyed "Zootooia" a little bit more. So I actually believe Zootopia should win best animated pic.

Pretty much. It's a movie about white privileged people complaining that they don't have more privilege, then getting more privilege by chance, and then still complaining about it while mediocre music plays. We're supposed to cheer for these characters.

I like movies that are about the life of pursuing artsy stuff, but from what I hear how La La Land approaches it, I'm hesitant to put money forward for it (I know I'll see it eventually, I just don't think I will so soon).

Oh, I totally get that. If it helps, I can recommend you a couple non-spoilery songs to listen to from the movie on YouTube so you can gauge your interest.

The chance of Arrival winning anything is remarkably low given the fields its in and the competition it's up against, but like a lot of other people I also really enjoyed that movie. I love a good sci-fi but I don't think it's Oscar worthy. The nomination nod is good enough.
