      @Outerspec:

      People who are "mad" at this are actually just generally pointing out the injustice of a poorly reviewed and fundamentally flawed movie like Suicide Squad winning an Oscar when more deserving and beloved movies and directors have not.

      https://www.google.com/amp/www.polygon.com/platform/amp/2017/2/26/14747338/suicide-squad-oscars-la-la-land

      But I think most people understand that, yeah, for makeup and hairstyle, sure, Suicide Squad had a really good chance in that category. It doesn't actually speak for the quality of the movie itself though.

      While I understand and agree with everything you said, a part of me is still glad that the people who probably dedicated a lot of time and effort into a promising movie that flunked for dumb creative decisions script and editing-wise were able to get one bright spot in the aftermath of this experience. Which maybe even help them work on movies that, you know, are actually good and deserving of their talents.

        @Steven:

        Is there a consensus on what should have beat Suicide Squad in that category? Not exactly my forte.

        Not my forte either but it was in a category with only 2 other competitors.

        Achievement in makeup and hairstyling
        "A Man Called Ove"
        "Star Trek Beyond"
        "Suicide Squad"

        I've seen all 3 movies and without a doubt Suicide Squad's biggest competition was Star Trek. While Star Trek had a bigger variety and more diverse cast of characters when it came to makeup and hairstyling I'll give Suicide Squad the point for putting more emphasis on each of the character's different styles. To me Suicide Squad just did a better job of highlighting it while in Star Trek it was just a natural part of their world. That's a pretty unique achievement in of itself but less memorable.

        Oh, definitely. Anyone who actually put in the hard work and talent deserves the accolades if they did a good job regardless of the overall product which they had little to no control of.

          @Outerspec:

          To sum it all up it was just a simple case of Warren being handed the wrong envelope, seeing something was off about it, and reading it anyway. I really don't blame Warrren for the mistake. This is on the Academy but it seems like a small mistake with a large impact. Everything else went off without a hitch but, man, what a poor ending.

          The funny part is that Beatty didn't read it anyway, he thought 'Oh, this is weird. I'll just hand it off to Dunaway.'

          How original is it to still have this in my signature 6 years later?

            Giving Suicide Squad an Oscars for best makeup and costumes does make sense if you juxtapose it to other potential competition this year (and honestly there wasn't that many anyway). It is really difficult to actually try to come up with a movie with costumes and make up that generally stand out without being CG-ified too much.

            But at the same time, it would be like giving Jim Carrey's the Grinch an Oscar for best makeup and costume. You can KINDA see that it works, but at the same time do you really want to give such a movie an Oscar? shrug

              I didn't watch the Oscars, so correct me if I'm wrong, but this is basically what happened with Best Picture right?

                Lion won nothing, Moana won nothing, Hidden Figures won nothing, Hell or High Water won nothing, etc…

                All great movies up for numerous awards but falling short.

                Add Kubo on that list and it basically sums up my feelings as well.

                Man, I REALLY wanted Kubo to win…

                  It was funny and not the usual superhero kind of movie.

                  Then again has the Academy EVER given anything to a comedy?

                  There have been more lighthearted movies that won, but they were more "dramedy" than pure comedy. (see: Shakespeare in Love)

                  Although Kevin Kline did win an Oscar for Best Actor for A Fish Called Wanda.

                      I feel like Bestellen's post has a warmth to it that Satsuki's lacked. Well done.
