Chapter 850: Ray of Hope

Thanks a lot, Bellisario. :)
"That we don't need" ? Weren't they planning on killing them anyway?
It's like saying "I don't need to deal with your snotty attitude".
-
@uniaka:
She shot reiju in the leg?
Shooting someone in the leg hardly makes you a sniper. That makes her much a sniper as Arlong.
-
Thanks a lot, Bellisario. :)
"That we don't need" ? Weren't they planning on killing them anyway?
No problem! And yes, they are (she says on the last page that the Vinsmokes "will be put to death"). I interpreted this as maybe she plans to get information out of Reiju first, and/or threaten her into keeping quiet about the plans to murder them all.
@Lord:Just so it's not lost on the last page.
It's not explicit if she was talking about her mom, or about Sanji, when she was talking here about sucking up:@BellisarioFaith:
- Pudding states in VIZ that she's "Mama's 'favorite'", rather than "one of [her] 'favorites'". She also follows the part about her acting with, "Doing all those favors and bowing and scraping got so annoying!", making it ambiguous who she's talking about (whereas, in MS, she was talking about Big Mom's pampering of her being what she was getting sick of.)
-

Maybe Pudding is actually trying to convince Reiju to betrayed the Germa. Which would explain why she telling her Big mom's plans.

Er, why would Reiju betray Germa instead of help Germa out of this situation?
-

Thanks, still wonder whats the line in just the Japanese raw.
-
Er, why would Reiju betray Germa instead of help Germa out of this situation?
To save her own life.
-
A chapter on my birthday! (Speaking of the legal release, which is what I keep up with)
As much as I wanted Pudding to actually be good, this twist makes the upcoming story much more interesting. Neither Big Mom and her pirates or the Vinsmoke family can be seen as empathetic in the least. So when both the Straw Hats and Vinsmokes are going to have a common enemy how is it going to be handled? Will they actually be temporary "allies"? Or will it be something more interesting than that?
It's just fun because I know a lot of people thought that the Vinsmokes would be the true villains of the arc, and that some truce would be made with Big Mom. Now we see both sides are villains, and Oda has clearly depicted both as such.
-
But wait guys, wait till judge pulls out the convenient device that changes the brothers to be good, then Germa will be good.
I know people who want this to happen.
-
Anyone have access to the Japanese raw and can translate?
Does Pudding state she is starting too get sick of her mother?
Pudding is getting sick of being cared too much by big mom. I learnt a new saying from this 世話の焼き過ぎる which means to care for someone excessively.
I quickly translated that page
"Stop dreaming!
There’s no reason to get married to that punk.
I’m Mama’s favourite, especially for my acting skills. But recently Mama’s excessive care has been unpleasant~ Fooling the guy at mom’s request was easy and the Strawhats were also simple minded
Only my family knows my true character."Basically pudding is talking like: "I'm mums favourite, but omg she's annoying" and carries on.
I had trouble with 他愛なかった on that page but basically means that the straw hats were easy to fool because they care about others too much (I think) I originally put it as "easy to fool", but to not be repetitive I used mangastreams simple minded, which is also correct.

No raw, but I have Viz's version.
Something I honestly only just realized is that Reiju is still bleeding. So 1) we still don't know what attacked her, and 2) this makes me question my Pudding is running a bluff theory.

I still think Capone involved Nitro with that face and hat remind me a bit of him.
I can see how Viz got their translation thinking about it.
Instead of mom being really excessive in care, it's slightly different to what I thought, got this through the help of a friend;
"Recently mom's gotten really annoying it's so unpleasant but fooling this guy was easy at moms request! The Strawhats were also foolish~".
-
All right, VIZ is here! Last one of these for 2016, too.
- VIZ name for the chapter is "A Ray of Light".
- In the panel where Chopper and Carrot are being pulled by Diesel and looking around at the mirrors, they say, "Maybe it's farther ahead?" instead of "Where are they?", and Diesel's reply when asked if he knows is "You wish I did! Dammit!" (As I'm sure you'd expect, there's not actually nearly as much profanity in this chapter as VIZ threw in there.)
- When Sanji states he's going for a walk (and gives a title drop to the chapter name): "You bet. I'm going to bask in my only ray of light remaining."
- Interestingly, Big Mom's words to Pekoms after he states that Pedro is like a brother to him are less harsh in the official version. Instead of "Quit sobbing like a baby, Pekoms!", she says, "Aww, don't cry, Pekoms." Seems like she's scolding him in the MS version, but being more comforting in the VIZ version.
- Tamago's attack is called "Legs Benedict" (where it was "Legg Benedict" in MS).
- Reiju's words to Pudding: "What a sweetheart you turned out to be." And Pudding replies with something very different from the scanlations: "See, it's that sarcastic and uncooperative side of you that we don't need."
One other thing: in MS Sanji says "Ah, rats!! I've made a vulgar looking bento out of usual habit." and that he's "…pretty sure Pudding wouldn't typically eat something like this."
But in Viz those lines go "Oh shoot!! I got in the groove and cooked the usual way!!" and "Poor Pudding, she's not going to eat this much…"Viz's version is less about Sanji doubting the quality or appearance of his food and more about how much of it there is, like he can't break the habit of making food for a whole crew. It's a pretty sweet sentiment, and shows where his head's really at. (as does the choice of foods cooked)
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also in both versions, in the panel after that, when Sanji imagines Pudding sharing the food with him, she's talking about how she couldn't eat that much, which echoes Viz's version of the above dialogue much better than MS's.
-
Hmm seeing the Viz translation, more than being fed up with Mama, it seems she was getting tired of acting nice to Sanji, Starwhats, not of Mama's pampering. Which brings down a notch the notion of indpendent Pudding.

Puddings race must be some secret or mystery cause Oda did state in that Guide to The Grand World that Pudding is part of a race yet her race isn't include on the Slave Auction Trade list or whatever it even lists races that were not yet introduced in any facet like the Minks:

I just noticed how it's interesting that female Giants are worth five times less than males. It makes sense with the notion that the males would be stronger than the females and probably doesn't have anything deep behind it. But considering Big Mom's tension with Giants (assuming she even is one lol), I don't know…

Probablly the whole man is stronger shit, but there could be some culture stuff that could be traced to Elbaf.
Maybe BM some giant or half giant that was rejected by Elbaf since there barbaric ways and culture, hell maybe I'm looking too deep but with this arc and BM in general being inpired by Fairy Tales and Alice maybe there is more links to Elbaf since its Fable spelledbackwards

The fact that Elbaf is spelled Fable backwards as well as how the Giants clearly have a viking (and potential Norse) theme going on and refer to their ruler as "The God of Elbaf" (who I wouldn't be surprised is some sort of Odin-inspired figure), the Elbaf arc might be inspired by loads of mythology similar to how Totland is inspired by fairly tales. I'm talking about Gorgons, Griffins, and probably even another tribe of Dwarves just to see how they could co-exist with their opposites in size. The fact that the Ancient Weapons, as well as Prometheus and Zeus, are all named after Greek/Roman entities assures me in Oda having interest in mythology.
-
We must seriously go to Elbaf alot of potential there.
-
-
Honestly I'd be happy with every animal on Elbaf having 8+ legs. I imagine that Elbaf being a giant tree with different realms for branches would be too much (but still, it would be really freaking awesome).
-
Id imagine the adams tree is from elbaf and that the island is on top of a giant one. Thats how i see it at least.

Seems unlikely since the only other race that has the two sexes/genders with different prices are mermaids/merman and the female is more valuable. If it was based on strength, its much more logical to differentiate human sexes/genders rather than giants(though they are pretty much human in terms of appearance) since scientifically, males are stronger than females on average.
-
i'm still wondering how Oda will manage the timeline. There is still some time till the wedding and from Luffy behaviour this chapter, I'm not sure his hands will wait that long unless something happens. Also we don't know what happened to Brook.

I thought about that too, but to be fair, Giants as a race are much more known for being combative and strength-oriented. And mermaids are different from their counterparts because of how fast they are renowned to be. If, say, a Celestial Dragon wants to have slave due to some major lifting work, I don't think they would be likely to say "Hey, let's get a Mink or Longarm to do this". They're probably going to say a Giant, or at least a hybrid. And with a choice as specific as that, it makes sense to go for the type that might be renowned to be the strongest. And Oda has acknowledged the superficial belief of men being stronger than women in his manga in instances such as Zoro's flashback with Kuina, Sanji's chivalry, and "beautiful" female often being the weakest members of major antagonist crews or acknowledging how weak they are.
-
I am sure the Celestial Dragons would pick something weaker than a giant for that. If they can't perform, they can beat them up more. They want their slaves to be barely able to perform the task really. They could easily buy a mink to carry them around, but we saw them using a human pirate.
-

It was just a random example in terms of efficiency lol. Of course they're morbid sadists as well, which is why some buy mermaids to put them in shark tanks to see how long they survive if I remember correctly. I'm just remarking that Giants may be valued solely due to strength most of the time. Especially since that's why the Marines are obsessed with recreating them.
And Minks are pretty varied in shapes and sizes overall, to be fair. They would probably want them solely as a pet because of how animal-like they are.
-
^I know, I was just remarking that the Dragons sadism overbears any form of practicality or efficiency. But I'll stop there, feels weird talking like this when discussing slaves.
-

I am not denying strength cant be used. Im sure strength has something to do with it since the races that are worth more than humans have been shown to be stronger than humans on average. Keyword here is average. Humans can be stronger but the price is set based on the average human rather than statistical outliers. To sum up my thoughts, the price of races involves strength but I dont think strength is used to determine the prices when the sexes are differentiated.
-
My only guess is that Pudding is playing both sides. What if her goal is her freedom, but just fleeing big mom isn't enough. Maybe she wants to escape through death, but can't under normal circumstances. She can't commit suicide because of a constant watchful eye, and she certainly couldn't get anyone to kill her. So what if her plan was to incite a civil war between the two families and amidst the chaos finally achieves it. The weird slime guy could be the ever present surveillance. He has been with her at all times.
Something else that bothers me are the homies. Primarily what affect they have on the original person the soul comes from. Perhaps big mom can exert some control over a person through their homie? If Pudding does desire freedom from big mom, then running away like Lola did wouldn't be enough. Perhaps big mom let Lola leave knowing she could just make her return if she wanted to.

Of course. But to be fair, even though humans can definitely be stronger than every other race, the series still loves to hype up the power of other species and whatnot. Even Sea Kings to this day when the first chapter had them one-shotted lol (not that there aren't different types like in the Calm Belts and Fishman Island).
It's rather unclear as of now. But given how the story is becoming more focused on Giants with Big Mom, Kaido, and Elbaf on the horizon, these bounties can certainly become more relevant and elaborated on.

Sorry he probably meant Dive to The Grand World, it was a book Jump and Oda published for the 15th anniversary of the series back in 2012.
On this page he lists all the races known in the OP world at this point and has a small burp about snakenecks and longarm, but in the header with Pudding, Pekoms and Bepo it says these three characters are members of races yet to be revealed.

The little words below said race characters describe something about them, like Pudding is just called three eyed girl that works for BM and Bepo says he is a bear that likes female bears.
-
Is the panel on the lower right supposed to be about Montblanc Noland and how he told kids about how he met Dwarves?
-
@Count:

Think so, thats probably a reason snakeneck and long arm are alco just small blurbs since they didn't have a character to represent them at the time.
-
So three eyed is a race. O.o I honestly think BM never actually did the deed with these men to create her kids, it could be just tied to her DF ability or even Smoothie who can squeeze certain "juices" out of people. I don't care who you are I think you'd prefer to die than to sleep with that monstrosity!

Artificial insemination? (Shrugs). Well big mom did want a world where everyone can live free from discrimination. So maybe they're only her children in name and not biologically? A show of how she accepts everyone regardless of race. Then again, BM does act a lot like a child, so maybe this is just a large scale version of house and she's the mother of course.

If that were the case then Pekoms would be Charlotte Pekoms? Lol
-
You guys are overthinking this. Royals have had loads of children in real life all of the time. And ESPECIALLY in fiction. Something as wacky as having as many kids as Big Mom perfectly suits a series as cartoony and quirky as One Piece. Especially when Otohime gave birth to Shirahoshi…

Not every Big Mom Pirate is connected by blood. Such as Homies like Randolph or Aristocroc (although you COULD argue that due to Big Mom giving them human consciousness, she is technically their mother anyways). And Baron Tamago is pretty much confirmed to not be Linlin's kid after seeing his title card, although maybe he's one of the ex-husbands she decided to not kick off to the curb lol.

He's just a puppet figure to deceive the public from being suspicious about the Charlotte conspiracy.

Oh I know they're not all connected by blood but the poster I replied to suggested that some of her kids that bears her name might not be blood related either and they simply adopted it when joining her crew and her grand plan of having every possible race to be part of Totland. But then why would some of her crew have the name and not all?
Pound does exists you know.
Pound is the only plausible husband I can think of that actually might have hit that. But over thinking is definitely what I'm doing here so ignore me, like Count said One Piece is quite wacky, best not to question every little thing lol.

And that's also what I was trying to say. The ones that DO have her name are indeed blood-related. Sorry for the confusion. Because she wants racial harmony, that would mean it make sense for her to want a family where all of these different races become one in blood. And she also cares for power a LOT, hence her political marriages to make alliances and presumably why Tamago and Pekoms are in the crew despite not being blood-related.
It's a balance between valuing diversity and power. Hence why Bege became an ally and why Judge is becoming one (and also giving his clone tech). And while Pekoms and Tamago are not blood-related, they are still at least members of other races (Minks and Longlegs). I think the confusion is due to believing it has to absolutely be one or the other when it's really a mix, and they don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Yeah, she isn't necessarily wanting to procreate with anything and everything that walks and, where possible, she will recruit members of other races that are strong/unique to be part of her dream. I don't get why she doesn't offer to let her mythical creatures just be inhabitants instead of subduing them to a picture book that she flicks through for her own amusement, they can serve that very purpose by roaming around being helpful in her island. Unless, it's because she wants to preserve them?
-

We will probably get an explanation. But to be fair, they aren't "mythical" creatures. They are RARE creatures. Practically one of a kind in terms of being hybrids or only being a few/one of them in existence. There's a distinction between them and major races with huge communities in the One Piece world. I don't see why she would make an exception to be so morbid with the exceedingly rare ones, but we'll see. It fits in with her character of how much she seems to value races from a superficial perspective and that alone about these individuals. She could care less about their individual say (which fits in line with the children she selects for political marriages and making everybody give away bits of their lifespan as a tax to stay in Totland) UNLESS they have something of "equal" value they're willing to bargain with.
And then there's her dream of wanting to make her family gigantic like her, hinting at some sort of insecurity towards size as seen with her phobia of Giants. She is a very interesting character. These traits seem like they might clash, but I think it's possible to balance them the more we learn about her.
