Gillespie's gonna win.
Well that explains why Trump endorsed him at the last minute….didn't want to back a loser before getting all the facts.

Fearless Leader was kind enough to share his view about gun control during a news conference today.
During a news conference alongside South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Seoul on Tuesday, President Trump was asked if would consider subjecting prospective gun buyers to the sort of “extreme vetting” he wants for immigrants.
Trump was asked about gun control hours after the Air Force announced that Devin Kelley — the gunman who killed 26 people with a military-style firearm in a church in Texas on Sunday — should have been prohibited from purchasing guns, but wasn’t because officials failed to enter his domestic violence offense into the National Criminal Information Center.
Trump then praised the armed bystander who shot Kelley with a rifle as he exited the church, before he drove away from the scene. (Kelley was found dead in his car after he crashed following a chase. His body had three gunshot wounds, including a head wound the medical examiner determined to be consistent with a self-inflicted shot.)
“And you might not have had that very brave person who happened to have a gun or a rifle in his truck, go out and shoot him and hit him and neutralize him,” Trump said. “And I can only say this — if he didn’t have a gun, instead of having 26 dead, you would’ve had hundreds of more dead. So that’s the way I feel about it.”
So, to reiterate, because I can't resist. According to the President. If someone goes on a mass shooting spree, and they kill lots of people. If that shooter is shot down by another shooter. The two somehow cancel each other out.
-
The thing that makes his idiotic comments even more dumb is the las vegas shooter and the Orlando shooter came that close to killing a 100 people and yet even in spite of that high number of deaths…..we can talk gun control because it would mean less good guys with guns.
-
The plot thickens.

For those who will be following the Virginia vote count, remember that NoVa, where all the Democratic voters live, all come in last. So it's going to look dire for an hour before it starts evening out.
This is the map last year when Hillary won by 5%:

Fivethirtyeight's coverage just mentioned that the Republican incumbent of New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District, Frank LoBiondo, won't be running for re-election in 2018. That moves the seat from very likely Republican to a toss-up.

Neat!
Meanwhile, as I wait for the results of the NJ election, nj.com posted an interesting video on people and why they decided to vote how they did.
I post it just to point out how painful the videos who voted the GOP are "afraid of making us a Sanctuary State." They also don't mind Christie or Trump, and hate socialists. All the usual things.
-
Beside the governor races, I'm most curious about the ballot in Maine to expand Medicaid. It would be a good referendum on ACA among voters.
-
Early results seem to be tentatively positive for Northam so far. Haven't heard about any important state bills anywhere
-
Voted Dem all across in the Suffolk County elections. Parked behind a F-150 with belligerent NRA bumper stickers, fun.
The Greens only had candidates for judges, a position which shouldn't even be an elected office, upholding my conviction that the Greens are useless fucks.
-
All my elections were hyper local (Connecticut doesn't have county level government), but straight ticket dem is what was done.
-
This was also my first vote where I actually got a damn sticker afterward.
-
Northram is massively outperforming benchmarks according to Nate Silver.
-
Looks like Northam will win in a landslide.
Tomorrow's takes will still be about how the margins show Dems actually lost in the big picture.

Despite being appropriate, I don't think Suffolk will ever have "Fuck each and everyone I didn't vote for" stickers

Almost a 10 point lead with 90% in; Danica's opponent is a homophobic asshole so all the better.

Neat on both counts! Seems like there's been a pretty strong Democratic wave in this election, which is unsurprising but nice to finally see manifest in an impactful way. I think the spin in the following days will be whether Northam's push towards the center or the backlash against Trump was the primary factor in his solid win (it's definitely the latter, considering turnout).
Only local elections here in California- the only one in my county was a special election in a different city.

New Jersey is called for Murphy.

It's weird to think so much is going on elsewhere when my area just had a school district budget levy.
-
House of Delegates races are apparently looking ugly for the GOP in Virginia as well.
-
AP press has called Virginia for Northam. Now let's see how the state legislatures looks.
-
Democratic candidate Erika Connors won a special race to fill an empty seat in the NH House; that was +10 district for Trump.

To be fair, Northam's polling lead had dwindled dramatically in the past two or so weeks. Seems like a lot of undecided voters went for Northam at the last minute…thanks, Mueller?
Anyways, seems like Virginia's House of Delegates could be up for grabs. Dems just need to flip 6 more seats.

Dems need 4 more seats to flip the VA House. It was 66-34 and gerrymandered to hell before the election.

Looks like the Medicaid Expansion passes in Maine, which is a sharp rebuke to their orc governor.

The call for

The night’s first bad take:
I think he's trying to say the thing where gerrymandered districts are often built on fragile leads that can backfire for the sleazes who gerrymander it.
But uh, it sure doesn't read that way lol. And even if that is what he said, it's a dumb overall comment.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Virginia got blue enough just in time really, they're safely on the other side of the crazy fence that they can weather the reaction wave.
Alas, I think again to poor North Carolina who was nearing nirvana but was still too far. -
Looks to me like Virginia's House of Delegates has a very good chance of flipping- of the 9 districts still uncalled, the Democrats lead narrowly in most of them and only trail by more than 2% in one. They need five (going by the NYTimes' count).
-
That idiot Staten Island Greek woman who said Columbus was the founder of our nation was wiped out by De Blasio in the NYC mayor race lol.

Nice result in Philadelphia as Larry Krasner is cruising to an easy victory in the DA race despite heavy opposition from the Philadelphia police union because of his advocacy for criminal justice reform.

This has been a good night. I'm abusing quotes, I feel, but I love what I'm seeing. If anyone cares about the NJ race (and why would you?) my polling area was much busier than usual. Also, our incumbent GOP state senator lost her race to Dem. Vin Gopal. Most incumbents in the smaller races seem to have won, but that's an exception.
Perhaps more interesting, Hoboken, New Jersey elected their first Sikh mayor. That's kind of neat.

Bar Association dubs fourth Trump judicial nominee unqualified
Is this embarrassing for Trump too? It seems like a few of his judicial nominees arent getting through on the grounds of being massively unqualified.
-
Democrats look to have flipped HD-117 in Georgia; from what I understand, HD-117 and 119 were gerrymandered out of the Athens district to try and break up the liberal college voters. Instead they wound up making two Democratic districts.
-
For my part, I went out and voted today and, well, I'm just so proud of my home state right now
-
I really like the poetry of Gillespie being the carpetbagger, and Northam being the local good ol' boy.
Like I'm seeing the democrat victory speech and hearing a southern accent. This is good. -
When gerrymandering backfires, it backfires hard.
-
Hey, hope. I remember what this feels like.

Bob Marshall, leading crusader against the most insidious evil of our time (transgender people using bathrooms), just lost his race to a transgender woman.
