The Distant Blue Sky aired today! Much to my surprise this was an Iwane Masa-aki solo key animation episode, making this the tenth solo key animation episode of his to air this year (I'm included the four Arceus specials released on January). The storyboard was done by Yuyama Kunihiko, who was credited as Kantoku (Series Director) for this episode, as opposed to his usual Sou-Kantoku (Chief Director) or Creative Supervisor. The episode director for the episode was Asada Yuuji, Iwane's usual episode director for his solo episodes. This is Asada's ninth episode director credit for this year, including the four Arceus specials which he was also the Kantoku (Series Director) for. The character designs for the episode were by Ishi-ichi Sayuri, who did the designs for the original 1997 series, Advanced Generation and Movie #20. Iwane Masa-aki and Shimura Izumi corrected Iwane's key animation for the episode and their corrections were then corrected by Chief Animation Supervisor Hiro-oka Toshihito (Pokemon XY character designer and chief animation supervisor). The script was provided by Yonemura Shouji (a writer since the 1997 series but most recently the writer in charge of the 2019 series' Series Construction) based on a draft by Yuyama Kunihiko (additionally credited for Series Gen'nan). Miyazaki Shinji's music was used for the episode.

I knew that Iwane was in the preview for this episode but I didn't expect him to solo key animate it after soloing Episodes #131 and #135. I am quite glad he did, though, considering how he has been with the series since Episode #3 of the 1997 series. This is the 113th episode that Iwane has solo key animated since he began doing so in 1998. https://pastebin.com/raw/S3V282yn

With eleven episodes of the Satoshi franchise left I suspect that we will get if not two then at least one more episode solo key animated by Iwane. It's only appropriate that Iwane solo key animate the last episode of the Satoshi series, so I'm pulling for him to solo that episode. With Tomioka Atsuhiro returning to the role of Series Composition for Pocket Monsters: Mezase Pokemon Master it's my hope that the last episode will also be written by Tomioka so that the legendary trio can all work together on the last episode. I imagine that Yuyama will probably want to storyboard that episode, too, so I imagine that Asada Yuuji would only direct it (like he did The Distant Blue Sky).

It would be nice if Iwane and Asada get to handle another episode before the last episode in March, though. Since Mezase Pokemon Master is only eleven episodes I'm hoping for Tomioka to write most if not all of them.

Gaaah, these next three months are going to be nerve-wrecking!

So with a new series on the horizon, will they make Pikachu one of the main Pokemon again? I mean he is basically the mascot of the series, but it would be cool to see a new Pokémon get some time to shine

We don't know yet but I would not be surprised at all if they did.

They may try to push new things a little harder this time around since they're doing a clean break. Pikachu and Meowth and Wobbafett don't need more promotion.

More than retiring Ash and Pikachu, I'm curious what happens to Team Rocket. Unless they beat Giovanni in the farewell tour I don't know how you get rid of those co-stars. But that's certainly well past the refresh date too.

Well if they don’t have Pikachu as the mascot then the question is now who do they replace him with? Any ideas?

There’s plenty of teams to replace team rocket with, but not any that are nearly as iconic

One of the current starters and then rotate it out every three years.

After all these years, that goddamn Pikachu never did evolve into Raichu.

He doesn't want to evolve and it's been repeated numerous times that he's happy the way he is.

It's something I can relate to. I was far more happy with my body before I was forced into physical changes I could not to consent to (first puberty).

Besides, he defeated the ace of the strongest trainer in the world, he clearly doesn't need to evolve to be a top contender.

Why would he? They established like 14 episodes in when he fought Lt. Surge that he was faster and with a more diverse moveset than a Raichu.

And all Ash's pokemon saw what happened to Charmader when he evolved and his personality changed completely, its why none of his original group evolved after that... until the episode Pidgeotto was leaving.

Guys I think it was a joke.

edit: now that i think about it, evolving Pikachu into Raichu at some point would have ruled. A much better and more interesting design.

The thing with Matis' Raichu was that he evolved his Raichu before he taught them any speed-moves. With Satoshi's Hitokage the issue was that Satoshi wasn't experienced enough to handle training a powerful Pokemon that had been traded. It was an in-universe depiction of the sale rule from the games. It was only after Satoshi nursed Lizardon back to health that Satoshi earned his respect.

Speaking of which, here's Writer Tomioka Atsuhiro's comments on "Lizardon! I Choose You!" https://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/features/memorial_book_orange_islands_screenwriters_comments.html

"In every episode I write, having the main Pokémon use a special attack that hadn't appeared in the TV series before is a Tomioka Promise. This time, we get "Dragon Rage." Feel warm inside at the men's oath taken by Satoshi and Lizardon!"

In hindsight, I wonder if Pokemon would have benefited from a Jojo like storytelling where the protagonist travels for one storyline, then we change to another protagonist once that story has finished. But, that would require either a new mascot or each trainer would somehow have to also have a Pikachu every story. I guess it wouldn't work out.

That said, I think the chances of the next series also having a Pikachu are high. He's the face of the franchise, and I don't see him going away.

It could have—and did—benefit from any number of things over the years. I still think there was stuff that could be done with Satoshi specifically but I would imagine that the next series isn't going to different much in terms of formula from previous series or else they could have kept Satoshi and aged him up.

....they did exactly that. After the first couple years where they kept Misty and Brock for ages, they changed the companions and dynamics every 3 years and reset the teams. (And even with them they changed their mons out so there were different gags.) His new companions consistently had arcs and quests of their own, and everyone got refreshed critters.

Ash, Pikachu and Team Rocket were consistent, but changed their side gags pretty regularly.

Not really sure why Wobbafett became such a permanent fixture though. I know his name in japanese makes a better pun joke, while in english its just a jibberish word.

The Sun and Moon season was so radically different from everything that came before it might as well have been a different series.

Dunno about Pikachu. On one hand he's the face of the franchise, but on the other it would feel wrong to have a Pikachu who's not THE Pikachu.

I'm leaning towards there being no Pikachu, at least not immediately or not as the protag's Pokémon.

Team Rocket is a lot harder. They made the show and I can see them staying in some capacity to keep a sense of familarity. What I actually want though is a show specifically about them. That'd be the perfect sendoff.

Pocket Monsters: Mezase Pokemon Master has been so much fun. Each episode is a mostly aimless little tale of Satoshi and Pikachuu traveling with a random assortment of their previous Pokemon and meeting new and old friends. Kasumi and Takeshi have joined Satoshi on his journey as he searches for his answer to what a Pokemon Master is. In Episode #5 Satoshi met up with his old Zenigame, joined by Fushigidane and Lizardon. It was a laid back episode but not as fun as Episode #4, written his head writer Tomioka Atsuhiro. In Episode #4 Satoshi meets a Tunbear who is having trouble controling their ice powers. It's a charming tale of showing Satoshi do what he does best: befriend and help Pokemon. It was such a good episode, I wish Tunbear had joined Satoshi's team. As we approach the final episode of the Satoshi era at the end of March I become increasingly dreading of the end. These last five episodes have been so good and refreshing, seeing Satoshi interact with his old Pokemon again and old companions (Kasumi, Takeshi, Dent) that I just don't want it to end.

Episode #9's title is "The Rocket Gang's Counterattack" which insinuates an homage to Char's Counterattack. The episode is written by Tomioka Atsuhiro, which makes me think that the episode might very well be the beginning of a story arc dedicated to the downfall of the Rocket Gang. It could also be a low-key episode about Musashi, Kojirou and Nyarth but who knows? It would be amazing to see Satoshi have a rematch with Sakaki, for example.

God, I'm just not ready for this to end.

So I've been watching the farewell tour and they're really bringing their A game on these. They're taking time to just show off scenery and have calm quiet moments and just... breathe. Like the first episode of the new run spends the first two minutes just having Ash and Pikachu play around at a road crossing and knocking off Ash's hat and its just a naturalistic thing they never have time for in an normal episode. Like they're under no real obligation to showcase anything new for 13 episodes and aren't trudging to the next gym and there's no plot to get to, so they can just take their time. The entire second episode was Ash and Misty having a fishing contest.

I haven't watched the show really since May's era, but I put some of the more recents seasons on Netflix as background noise occasionally. Liked Sun and Moon okay, really did not like the Goh seasons. And its just... different. Like they're willing to relax and just indulge in letting the characters have moments. They're not forcing comedy or new side characters and just meeting critters in the wild and its nice. Lke they met up with a Beartic and gave it an actual plight and personality and bonding moments and before the end of the episode I wanted Ash to catch that thing and have it show up some more in the remaining stint. And they didn't.... but they actually got me invested in the random mon of the dayh.

Ash actually rotating his damn roster and getting some real variety after 25 years and like 50 critters is nice too.

Or maybe its just because I'm watching these in Japanese and the dub has always crippled them with bad acting but I dunno.

The original Japanese version is a well-oiled machine and not riddled with bad acting, replacement music and altered scripts. Sun & Moon is easily the best the franchise has ever been an a large part of that lies on the contributions you can only find in the original version (not to mention the gorgeous animation).

@Robby yeah, I've been watching and it felt like a weekend morning all over again. It's weird but not in a bad-weird but more good-weird. It felt like seeing someone you've been with (okay, I skipped like 5 seasons) enjoying his life in retirement. It's pretty heartwarming despite my age and I thought they nailed it with the writing because there's no real plot. The original trio really did have the best chemistry.

I can't comment on character chemistry for the later shows, Stopped watching during May, the last movie I distincltly remember was movie 9, ranger of the sea. (I really liked the LUcario movie previous to that tho) I maybe saw another one or two randomly on cartoon network. So that was probably around 06 or 07 but I'd definitely moved past the show at that point, but still played the games!.

Caught bits of Dawn and her girlfriend Zoey. Don't think I saw a single episode or movie during Black and White with Iris and Cilian, or any full episode of XY with Serena and the two blondes. So I can't make any judgements on those. Saw some Sun* Moon on netflix when lots of people said it was good for the first tiem in ages, and some of the stuff with Goh that I don't like at all., because his goal is really really dumb.

But I was pretty done with Cilian in the 10 or so minutes I had to put up with him in episode 3. If he was really doing that Pokémon Connoisseur shtick all the time for 200 episodes... yuck.

I mean, Brock hits on girls and Misty is afraid of bugs get old too... but they never made me annoyed within five minutes of meeting them.

I read somewhere that a part of the community actually dislike Max and I thought that Hoenn might be primarily saved by Brock being there. I thought the brother-sister dynamic was pretty cool and May was pretty memorable, and they did tone down Brock hitting on girls part quite a lot after Johto.

I do think the Sinnoh trio was pretty great and while Dawn was not a replaceable for Misty, Ash served as a Mentor role for her and it stood out because unlike the previous seasons, he wasn't the greenhorn the audience was used to. Dawn was a pretty great character too and Piplup + Pikachu combination stole a lot of screen time, and not in an annoying way from what I could tell. That was missing in Hoenn. Of course, the writers tried to repeat the Pikachu + (insert another starter/mascot) thing with Oshawott and some others, but I don't think any did have that much charm as the Piplup + Pikachu pairing. The mentor-thing also goes beyond the superficial, I remember some moments where Ash supported Dawn based on his own experience, the audience liked it enough for them to have 2 songs together. In Japan, Serena is the most popular, followed closely by Dawn. She's the only one that is written in to show up in the tournament, so that does speak of her popularity.

Of course, the OG trio still hits the sweet spot because of Brock's involvement. Brock-Misty-Ash trio works best together because Brock and Misty actually plays off each other pretty well. In later seasons, Brock presence could still be felt but you could never capture the same charm because he felt like he was just there and it was "Ash and this region's girl dynamic". Then came Cillain, and his absence can really be felt.
Black and White was such a huge mess that came after such a great Sinnoh season. Then again, in the games, BW is the series that had the company bordering on ending the franchise.

I can't speak for X&Y and Alola, but I do dislike Goh (Adventures). I do think the general reception was that the X&Y dynamics were pretty well received but then that might be a shipping thing since Serena has a huge crush on Ash.

I thought Dawn showed up again mostly because they did the Diamond/Pearl remakes recently? ANd Arceus?

Brock is a weird case because they replaced him with Tracey and there was huge backlash... so they brought him back and were terrified to take him out again.

I wonder if they hadn't done Orange Islands if Brock would have left a little sooner?

@Robby that was actually my go-to reply but it felt too easy because half of what I post about pokemon here is that it is a marketing machine now without soul and I really didn't want to go there again. But I'm sure your right and that's why she was brought back (they also did a Legends-inspired arc a few months back..i think).

But I'm also biased because I like Dawn and the DP trio next to the original one and am watching it (I watched like 10% of it when I was young) weekly to learn my Japanese.

Edit: No one asked but I'll plug it in anyway, rewatching the series is infinitely more enjoyable and rewarding knowing that Ash, did indeed, achieve his dreams in the end.

Best Wishes got hit with the Tsunami early on and that seemed to prevent the series from ever having a recurring story arc. Satoshi's march towards the Champion League (the tournament after the regional tournament) was halted for some reason but I still think Best Wishes is a fun series. There's extra rival characters so Satoshi has numerous rivals and Dent and Iris have rivals, too. There are also numerous tournament arcs with allow interactions with rivals as well as character growth and different types of battles. I do wish that Tomioka Atsuhiro had been more involved but he seemed to be taking a bit of a break during Best Wishes and letting other writers handle important episodes (after writing over 60 episodes of DP himself). Dent and Iris thrive on the performances of Miyano Mamoru and Yuuki Aoi.

Personally, I think XY was really bland. I didn't like Hiro-oka Toshihito's character designs (they had too many lines and awkward proportions) and the storylines weren't very exciting. The series series director at the time—Yajima Tetsuo—did push for more exciting battle animation, though, but I feel like that really only came about during the gym battles and later on during the third year of the series with the Flare Gang, Mega Evolution specials and Kalos League.

For some reason I never did account for the unfortunate 2011 tsunami being a huge part of why BW was bad. But I honestly did think that by dumbing down Ash by that extend they shot themselves in the foot too. A huge part of BW game's backlash back then was that they removed all other pokemon except the region (so that it did feel like a fresh start) and they likely tried that perspective with Ash. Not only did it not go well, they also did the N and Plasma storyline sloppily.
I vividly remember big names such as Miyano Mamoru and Yuuki Aoi signing on, which is a HUGE commitment. That and all the marketing attempts to try and re-brand it as a fresh start...to only have it turn out to be one of the weakest seasons.

I thought XY's 3rd year was pretty spectacular but never actually followed from the start. But I DO believe that the animation jumps in the final tournaments along with the internet backlash on his loss did led to the eventual decision to let him win today.

@JulieYBM out of curiousity, seeing as you follow the anime closely, which is your favourite season and which trio/quartet do you enjoy the most?

This is kind of a tough one to answer because there are so many good things that I like any about many of the series. I think that my overall favorite series is probably Sun & Moon, which I think really hits that emotional core in its scripts thanks to Matsui Aya's oversight as head writer (she took over for Tomioka Atsuhiro after he had held the role for DP, BW and XY). Sun & Moon has gorgeous animation and is a series wholly dedicated to heart and gags, which is a major breath of fresh air after XY was so dedicated to battles. The themes of family and exploring death (there's, like, three episodes where characters have to face the inevitability of death, which is nuts for this franchise) in so many episodes also sets it heavily apart from previous series, which were a lot more Star Trek: The Next Generation to Sun & Moon's Deep Space Nine. The 'stationary' aspect of the series and the large cast of characters always meant that there was a different type of story going on. Sun & Moon also has the best tournament in a lot of ways.

The whole cast gets to participate and end their storylines in a climatic final battle with their partner Pokemon and the strategies are really inventive. Even if some of the animation doesn't match the levels of Satoshi vs Shouta and Satoshi versus Alan from XY they're really fun climaxes to the series. Satoshi vs Kukui is also the first four episode-long battle in the franchise, usurping Satoshi vs Shinji (DP #186-188) as the first three episode-long battle of the franchise. Kukui being such a central, father figure across Sun & Moon really adds gravitas to his battle with Satoshi.

My favorite episode of Sun & Moon isn't even a battle-centric episode! Episode #59: "Mao and Suiren: Bittersweet Memories!" is a genius episode with gorgeous animation overseen by two of the franchise's young ace animators at the time: Nishitani Yasushi and Akiyama Yasuhiko. Nishitani, Akiyama and Episode Director Kodaira Maki really bring themselves to adapting the script by Miyata Yuki. It's such a soft and Sapphic episode about how Suiren and Mao meet and there's a lot of attention paid to the character acting.

The battles of Sun & Moon are still pretty fun but you can tell the real thrust of the series is in the gag and character episodes.

When I think about what series really started the revolution of the steady powering up the Anipoke franchise underwent I think of Diamond & Pearl. The original 1997 series wasn't very concerned with its battles and while Advanced Generation started to shift those winds a little I feel like it was Diamond & Pearl that full-on saw the maturation of a Caterpie into a Butterfree, to use an analogy.

Starting with Diamond & Pearl Tomioka Atsuhiro took over the role of head writer (which had been officially vacant since Shudou Takeshi left the role with Episode #158 of the 1997-2002 series) and began to revolutionize the series. Throughout the original series Tomioka (despite being the youngest writer) had slowly built himself up as being the writer who tackled major battle episodes. For example, Tomioka wrote the franchise's first two-episode long battle (which was also the first Six vs Six Full Battle) in Episode #113: "Winners' Cup! Full Battle 6 VS 6!!" and Episode #114: "The Final Battle! Enter Kairyu!!" Tomioka continued this by handling further major battles, like Satoshi versus Shigeru and Satoshi versus Hazuki in the Jouto League. Advanced Generation saw Tomioka mostly focusing on the newly introduced Pokemon Contest concept and writing most of the episodes centered on Haruka and the Pokemon Contests she was entering. Those are were we could really see Tomioka's hallmark traits begin to grow: Tomioka wrote exciting character interactions between Haruka and the rivals she didn't get along with as well as battle strategies that both made use of game mechanics and then made use of real world physics not possible in the games.

I mentioned AG because I feel like it's a perfect preamble to setting up that DP continued this while also introducing an additional element. While Tomioka was off focusing on the Hou-en and Kantou Pokemon Contests in AG the battle-centric episodes for Satoshi were mostly being handled by other writers. While there were some occasionally exciting moments I never felt like those episodes really caught my attention as much as the Haruka episodes. This—combined with Pokemon's two ace animators (Iwane and Tamagawa) being busy with the Contest episodes—leads to the Satoshi-centric episodes of AG all being quite boring.

Fast-forward to DP and things have changed a bit. Iwane and Tamagawa are still focusing on the Contest episodes for Hikari but there's a lot more planning at the production level to schedule major episodes far enough apart that Iwane and Tamagawa don't have to miss out.

It's sort of hard to describe just how much DP feels like a passion project for Head Writer (Series Kousei/Composition) Tomioka Atsuhiro, Storyboard Artist & Episode Director Asada Yuuji (so much so that they just credited him as a series director for #171-193) and Animation Supervisor Iwane Masaaki. For AG Tomioka wrote 36/193 scripts but for DP he wrote 62/193 scripts, with a specific focus on the gym battles, the rival battles with Shinji, the battle tournaments, the Pokemon Contests, and the Ginga Gang episodes). Asada and Iwane specifically worked on as many Tomioka scripted episodes as possible, especially the further the series got to the end. Because of Iwane's speed and skill as an animator (many solo key animators exist, few can do it well and only Iwane does it constantly) he was not only able to oversee episodes of his own (sometimes working alone, sometimes helping to train a young animator from Studio Cockpit) but also provide action animation for another episode in the animation team rotation. This led to Iwane pumping out a lot of cool battle scenes for the Shin-nou League, because he work work on episodes he was in charge of and then work on other episodes handled by Natsume Kunihiko's team (or Tamagawa Akihiro's team).

DP definitely saw Tomioka up his game as a writer, introducing Satoshi's best rival: Shinji. Shinji clashed with Satoshi because he didn't believe in being friends with Pokemon and essentially trained and acted like a real life competitive player. What Shinji would do wasn't necessarily illegal in-universe but his treatment of his Pokemon and attitude towards Satoshi certainly would make him a 'antagonist' that viewers would love to hate. After the lackluster rivalry with Shigeru in the original series and the lack of a recurring rival in AG Shinji was truly something new and fearsome. He was acknowledged as having traveled to all of the same regions as Satoshi and his battles involved strategies that both made use of the game's mechanics but also things that could be done in real life if Pokemon were real. Furthermore, Shinji didn't just show up to battle Satoshi. The first gym for DP is a four episode arc (Episodes #15-18) and in the very first episode we see Shinji get to have a full episode dedicated to his battle with Gym Leader Hyouta, proving that DP was truly going to be different. While the animation in DP isn't necessarily as high-quality as Sun & Moon's animation the general level of writing, directing and animation is very calculated to "roll with the punches" of the production's limited resources. In this way, with reused animation very much so often coming into play, there's a sort of rhythmic flow to battles, especially when they're handled by Storyboard Artist & Episode Director Asada Yuuji and Iwane Masaaki as animation supervisor and key animator. DP's use of BANK animation (reusable animation, like Pokemon attacks or trainers ordering commands) is next-level, often being employed by Asada and Iwane in such a way that it then gives Iwane extra time and drawings to create original animation for a battle that is more complicated. In this way, battles can become more involved and longer, with Pokemon lasting longer before being defeated. It was a new way to spice up battles after so many of them had been one-shot defeats in the previous two series and I think adds a lot of excitement to those episodes.

Like I said at the beginning of this behemoth post, it's so hard to chose a 'favorite' series because in a lot of ways a lot of the series have their own exciting charm and historical importance to the Anipoke franchise. Sun & Moon has a charming, large cast that all get their own fun focus episodes. Diamond & Pearl is the beginning of the franchise's growth into truly becoming a passion project for the staff and breaking out of the monotany of the first series' dreaded Jouto episodes and boring battles. Hikari is a charming co-protagonist to Satoshi with a fiery drive to become a top Coordinator just like Satoshi wants to win his battles. Shinji becomes the franchise's best rival character by virtue of being an asshole you really love to hate and even gets a character arc that develops him over the series into someone to love to love. DP also made Champion Shirona a recurring character and integral part of Shinji and Satoshi's development, as well as introducing the concept of the Champion League: a League you can only enter after winning the regional League. The number of multi-part story arcs handled by a single writer (Tomioka, mostly) expanded and grew with greater cohesion in trying to increase the general quality of the battles and strategies.

I really wish more episodes of DP were subbed. A lot of the major episodes are subbed but some of the early episodes are still left unsubbed, which is a shame. I suggest checking out what has been subbed, especially if they're written by Tomioka or has Asada and Iwane as episode director and animation director/supervisor.

EDIT: With regards to Best Wishes: while I wish that the staff had been allowed to continue on from DP and have Satoshi enter the Champion League I honestly don't hold it against them that he wasn't able to. They had to roll with the punches and I personally found the battles to be a lot of fun. Even Satoshi acting like an idiot was funny.

XY is pretty bland, IMO. I think Alan deserved to win the Kalos League, so I never really understood the backlash against Satoshi losing since Alan had such a strong build up to his victory. DP and BW have Satoshi lose the League in very clear "We're being handcuffed here, don't kill us" ways. With Alan Satoshi just straight up lost to a trainer with a better reason to win.

                                                              She/Her

I think much of the backlash to XY was because of the typing disadvantage and how the episode came after the amazing Sceptile vs Greninja. Alain might have his own story but Greninja and Ash was very much akin to Ash's relationship with Charizard back in the day. He even got his own form in game. Overall, I look back and I'm glad he did lose because otherwise we wouldn't have his Alola championship and him defeating Cynthia in Masters.

But anyway, thank you for the informative post. Although I have never looked into the credits and the staff (which I will try to moving forward), DP really felt like a lot of love was put into it. It's like there's a clear sense of direction on what to do with the characters and they also introduced Shinji, whose rivalry I daresay was a more enjoyable one than the one with Gary. That and besides Haruka, Hikari felt more of a character of her own as compared to Misty. They really went full in on Dawn. I really have a soft spot for the Sinnoh region and how it really does feel like a world on its own, separating itself from the rest of the region. Much like how there's this magic in Hokkaido and Sapporo in the winter.

Regarding Sun Moon, I do intend to get to it eventually after I finish watching DP in Japanese. I don't have any issues with the lack of subs because it is elementary Japanese that is being thrown around(and that I'm learning, I fully KNOW that I need to step out of my comfort zone and start watching something else but its too fun). I was originally one of the ones that was turned away by Sun Moon's new animation style but quickly accepted how much more, for a better lack of word, soul, it gave to the characters. And I'm glad that Journeys continued parts of it. Coincidentally or not, if Sun and Moon does have some darker stories as you have said, then it does line up with the games own plot. I do like the different approach of Ash technically not having any set companions in Alola and I really appreciate that they try to change up the dynamics (with siblings, with just one person(goh), trios). Although because it is still a kids show, there's a lot of emphasis on dynamics which just screams your typical Japanese youth group.

You nailed the part on Hoenn and Haruka's contest, something that was new and stood side by side with Ash's own journey back in the Advanced generation of games. I really enjoyed her rivalry with Drew and the contests were one of my favourite when I was a kid. There's some love shown there because the mechanics was actually fun in the games. This, I assume, helped in the writing for Haruka. I like the eventual shift to an equally important storyline for the companion in later seasons that Haruka kickstarted. That's not to say Misty's role isn't all that great, she's still strong in her own way (with Togepi's side plot).

To explain XY popularity, I would say its just whimsical shipping and a bunch of younger people excited over a potential love interest for our main character of 15(at that point) over years. I don't think Serena is a bad character either, so that helps.

Sun & Moon has so much life and character bursting from it and it really gives Satoshi a sense of fun and personality he didn't have in XY. The most fun thing about Sun & Moon is how you can feel just how much fun the animators are having both in how much movement they were allowed to do and the amount of funny faces they were allowed to draw. The series has a huge number of very densely animated scenes that really shouldn't have been possible and it breaks my heart that Pocket Monsters (2019) fell apart like it did. I don't know what exactly happened but it felt like the production team got hit hard both by OLM producing more series but also by COVID fucking up the production pipeline more. I miss the days of the series' production being five months ahead of broadcast.

I wasn't expecting Tomioka to write these last three episodes as an arc instead of just episodic plots but it would appear we are in fact going to be getting one last Tomioka story arc!

God, I can't believe it. The final Tomioka/Asada/Iwane episode. We've been building up to this since 1998. I honestly don't know what to say. It was nice little drama episode with a lot of action. Iwane got to do some nice mecha animation and effects animation. I'm just...so stunned. This is it. Unless these three are all on Pocket Monsters (2023) there will be no more Golden Trio.

A certain girl from Movie #5 also had a quick cameo in the episode.

Next week is Episode #11. The final episode of Pocket Monsters: Mezase Pokemon Master and the final episode of the Satoshi era of Pokemon, which lasted from 1997-2023. I'm in mourning. I started following Pokemon in Japanese weekly with XY in 2013. Now it's all coming to an end.

Interestingly enough, I think all of the background music for this episode was by Miyazaki Shinji. Miyazaki's music truly adds layers that Hayashi Yuuki's music simply cannot and I truly wish Miyazaki had not be replaced.

Yusa Kouji voiced the Pokemon Hunter in this episode. Yusa voiced Orange League Head Leader Yuuji (1997 Series: Episodes #113-114), the first trainer Satoshi ever had a Full Battle with! What a twist!

@Shiebs said in Pokemon Anime (Sun & Moon + Generations):

Hats off, the series will never be the same without Ash and his voice.
