I'm going to see the movie tonight but there is a Severe Wind Watch in my area so that may affect attendance.

Geez. My local theater doesn't even have one shred evidence that it's showing Film Gold. Not a poster, not a presence on the marquee… not even the movie times for it on the box office screen. I had to ask the box-office lady about it and even she was kinda confused for a second until she knew what I was talking about. >__>

When I went to see Battle of Gods and Ressurrction F, the theater was brimming with energy because of excited DBZ fans.

...I'm not.... I'm not gonna experience that here with Film Gold.... am I? 😞

I'm going to be seeing it in Toronto on Monday! I'm so excited - One Piece isn't all that well known in my area (one bookstore occasionally gets a volume), so it'll be interesting to be in a place that (hopefully) has a lot of fans of the series!

One Piece: Grand Line Bout - a fighting game made by fans, for fans!

In to see it now, I was wrong, tickers were for 7:30. I'm at Arizona Mills Harkins.

I doubt anyone here is too but just checking.

Welp. I expected as much. 😞

I honestly hope my local theater doesn't cancel future showings due to low attendance on opening day… because that'd suck for me (i'm gonna watch it on Thursday).

Just came back from the 7:30 showing. Theater was a little over half full. Some enthusiastic fans sat behind me getting hyped, and everyone laughed at all of the funny bits.

I really enjoyed this movie. The aesthetic of Gran Tesoro alone is breath-taking and the casino theme gels perfectly with the One Piece cast.
I made a mental list of the hidden cameos I spotted:

                            ! Heracles
                            Vice Admiral Chaton
                            Wanze
                            Absalom

I might have missed a few, but that's who I saw.

The theater was full aside from 10 or so seats and the movie was great! Definitely the best One Piece movie, everyone laughed at the comedic parts and references, enjoyed all the action parts and character moments and they all clapped at the end when I started clapping

Main things I wanna ask –

                                • Did they play any movie previews beforehand?

                                • Sabo. How was Sabo's voice?

                                • Koala. How was Koala's voice (I realize she has like one line, but still lol)

                                • Did Luffy deepen his voice any for Fourth Gear?

                                • Did they translate the credits, or just leave them in Japanese (hate when they leave 'em in Japanese, just seems lazy)

                                • And lastly, did they keep the ending song intact or replaced it ala Strong World's release.

the movie was really good and loved just about all of it. Overall though I think film z was a better film, but I think Gild Tesoro was probably a better villian though. I enjoyed his character and I really liked and understood his backstory, and the VA that played also did a fantastic job. It helped that I have been watching the english dub of hunter x hunter so I could hear the hisoka in him. I am most likely going to go see it again on monday.

                                    • Did they play any movie previews beforehand?

The weird local arthouse theater that I frequent did, but they only showed previews for movies that specific theater was going to be showing. No idea about others.

                                    • Sabo. How was Sabo's voice?

In order for something to be gained, something of equal value must be lost. This is the law of equivalent exchange.

                                    • Koala. How was Koala's voice (I realize she has like one line, but still lol)

Fine. A bit deeper than I expected, but it worked for her.

                                    • Did Luffy deepen his voice any for Fourth Gear?

Hard to tell. It sounded like it, but then again it also just kinda sounded like typical Angry Clinkenbeard Voice.

                                    • Did they translate the credits, or just leave them in Japanese (hate when they leave 'em in Japanese, just seems lazy)

Credits were in Japanese, with English-language credits scrolling at the end. Rather made sense this time though, with how the credits were animated.

                                    • And lastly, did they keep the ending song intact or replaced it ala Strong World's release.

Don't worry. That weird, screamy, beautiful song was kept perfectly intact.

Speaking of songs, Gold and Jive was, well, it was acceptable. The lyrics were well adapted, but the singers lacked the energy that's really needed for swing. Maybe it was a confidence thing, I don't know. It wasn't as well-done as the song from Film: Z, but at the same time, it was about as good as you can reasonably ask for a Japanese-to-English song translation.

Overall, a really fun, lively experience. The real joy of watching the movie in a theater came not from the dub (though it was very well done) but from the audience. Being around fans who could get hype at all the big hype moments was great, but what really made me smile was the reactions from the complete One Piece newbies around me, who made me remember why elements that have grown expected now were hype to begin with. If you've got a chance to watch it in theaters, I highly recommend it. This entertainment is best suited for a crowd.

The only trailers my theater played were for movies that are coming out within the next few months (Lego Batman, Spider-Man, Transformers and Power Rangers)

Vic was great as Sabo and you could hear and see the girls in front of me fangirling over Sabo and the fact that he was voiced by Vic. Let be frank though, this movie is probably the best time I've had at the movies since Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F. Seeing something I love on the big screen with others fans of it all around me enjoying as well as me was great. They understood the callbacks, references, cameos and clapped at the end when I started to clap. Had I just say, seen the speed sub, it wouldn't feel as complete to me. This movie was so entertaining that it deserves to be seen in theaters. I mean, at the end of the day, Spandam and Lucci and maybe even Sabo didn't need to be there, but I loved it! See this in theaters please! Support the official release because I want this to keep happening for One Piece and the genre in general.

Koala's voice was pretty good and I remember seeing her actress credited in the English credits after the Japanese ones but I don't exactly remember what her name was. Guess we'll have to wait for the Blu-ray if nobody else catches it.

Also, I can only guess that the theaters were more full than with Movie 8 nearly 10 years ago which is a great sign and as an added plus, there were no dub haters in attendance. There were even a few people from Asia in the audience and they didn't groan at it, they loved it just as much as the rest of the audience did.

–- Update From New Post Merge ---

Jeannie Tirado was Koala's voice actress

So here's something that's been bothering me since more glimpses of the film came out.

When Tesoro is in his big Gold Statue form…. how da hell is he able to shoot lasers? I thought his powers were derived from Gold, shooting lasers comes out of left-field. Lmao.... I know it's One Piece, but still... Just seems a bit too out-of-theme. Do they explain that?

For anyone curious about who played who, I took notes during the credits and added the full English cast and crew list up top.

I actually saw it in Las Vegas where I'm currently living, and the film's setting was pretty much the city dialed up to 11. The visuals were very impressive to watch on the big screen, and I was surprised how much I got drawn into the plot, especially as things seemed to get worse and worse for the Straw Hats.

Cast-wise, all the main VAs were at the top of their game, no question. Maybe Brook got too shrill at spots, such as the whole scene with the owls, but everything else was marvelous. Of the guest stars, Keith Silverstein was impeccable as Tesoro: not just his acting, the singing was fun to listen as well. I was also very surprised by how much I enjoyed Daman Mills as Mr. Tanaka; his character was beyond snivelly, but he made it sound perfectly natural (aside from the creepiest One Piece laugh I've ever heard). Sadly, in comparison Michele Knotz wasn't as enjoyable as Carina. I've known her since her first role as Hajime Yagi from World of Narue, and I've had a soft spot for her work, but I'll admit she's never been the epitome of fine acting. Plus, her singing leaves a lot to be desired. Everyone else sounded good to great, and the returning characters (and those 0set to appear) were all a joy to listen to.

Gonna chime in on some of these that either haven’t been answered yet or are kinda opinion-based:

                                                    @RomeIsHome25:

Main things I wanna ask –

                                                    • Did they play any movie previews beforehand?

This is interesting because from what others have said, this was different for everyone. My theater showed two trailers, one for Beauty and the Beast, and one for Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

                                                    @RomeIsHome25:

                                                    • Sabo. How was Sabo's voice?

Very Vic Mignognaish lol. It was good, it isn’t him just straight up doing his Ed voice or anything, it’s more low pitched with just a hint of gravel coming out every so often. Sounded good.

                                                    @RomeIsHome25:

                                                    • Koala. How was Koala's voice (I realize she has like one line, but still lol)

She had one line, so yeah, not sure on this one.

                                                    @RomeIsHome25:

                                                    • Did Luffy deepen his voice any for Fourth Gear?

It sounded deeper to me, but marginally so. Like, I was expecting him to deepen his voice and was actively looking out for it, so I caught it. I’m not sure someone watching it casually would pick up on it.

I freaking LOVED this movie BTW, I’ll type up full thoughts later when I’ve got time (I’m at work)

That's a shame that Carina's voice actress couldn't sing all that well. I really wanted the English version of Gold and Jive to be good, but I'm guessing with her lack-luster singing it's not all that great.

It's not terrible or anything, it's on key at least. It's just not a performance I'd expect tens of thousands of people in the stands to be cheering for like they expect us to believe. It struck me as more like a decent karaoke booth performance, whereas Silverstein actually sounded like he was putting himself out there. Then their duet results in some weird disconnect. I'm not even sure it was Knotz singing or someone else, but they could have picked someone better for the opening number. Nothing horrible, just not spectacular, which considering the visuals during the song, I was sort of hoping for.

Thanks, I'll add that in. Cool to see Clyde Mandelin also back on translation duties! The sub should be fun to read once it hits Blu-Ray.

I know the movie was just released yesterday but from what I've seen with past FUNimation Films, we will probably see Film Gold released on home video in March or April

One Piece: Film Gold made $164,409 yesterday which is much more than the Alabasta movie made in its limited release: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/

It's ranked higher than any of the limited release Naruto movies did in their opening weekends, it's done better than Rurouni Kenshin: Origins' entire run, earned more in it's first day than The Boy and The Beast did on it's first day and has performed MUCH better than Movie 8 did in it's entire run as well as grossing more and ranking higher than Attack on Titan Part 2 did on it's first day and performing much better than FUNi's more niche titles did in their entire runs and first day. So yeah, it's a success and stands as FUNi's 6th highest grossing release

that is pretty good, and hopefully it can make a good amount as well during it's whole run. I know that I am going to try and see it again with a friend on the 16th.

Anyhoo, loved the casting and translation. Did not expect them to dub the songs, so that was a treat to hear.

It had a lot of highlights, but it felt like a lot of time could be spent between those moments just to allow for some room to breathe. Nitpick aside however, as far as One Piece movies go, I say ace high!

It, however, only had showings in 110 theaters last night, opposed to 372 on Tuesday. I know it will be in more theatres tonight. That still roughs out to $229 per theater, which is still not terribly shabby for a movie like this.

Tonight, the movie should be playing in additional theaters.

That movie grossed $132,640 on it's first day with $12,483 the next day but bounced back on it's third day with $98,233 so it's final gross will likely be higher than AoT Part 2's final gross of $305,934

OK, so I saw Film Gold opening day. The movie was a lot of fun. I liked the casino setting, the heist element was a lot of fun, and I think I got into the comedy here more than I have most of the previous movies. It seemed like a movie that felt most like a condensed arc of the series, so in that sense it was relatively predictable, but I felt like it made good use out of a predictable setup. And of course it had great animation and a really cool soundtrack. Though I do feel like the Tesoro flashbacks could have been handled better (they should have had most references to his past made throughout the film to give it more impact). Also , while background cameos weren’t a big deal, characters like Sabo, Koala, and Lucci felt really forced (strangely enough I thought Spandam had the best handled of these type of cameos). As a whole, like the other “Film” movies I would rank it higher than most of the other movies. I don’t think it had quite enough going for it to it to consider it better than Baron Omatsuri or Film Z for me, but I think it didn’t have the notable problems I felt Strong World had, so I guess I would call it my #3 One Piece movie.

The dub was great, but at this point that’s no surprise. The Tesoro gang and Carina were all great, especially Keith Silverstein as Tesoro was the best, which makes me appreciate Funimation bringing in actors outside of the usual talent pool for these movies. As for Sabo and Koala, I honestly don’t have particularly strong opinions because of how small their roles were. Vic sounded good as Sabo, and he’ll probably be great when we get to Dressrosa, but there’s not much to latch onto here. I did find it interesting that Koala was quite a bit deeper than I was expecting; whether or not it works for her character I’ll have to wait and see. All the side characters were serviceable too.

As far as the audience goes, I just recently moved a couple months ago, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect in terms of attendance for a release like this, so I was pleasantly surprised the theater was about 80% full.

The movie was awesome but AMC ruined my experience by completely screwing up the colors, seemingly turning the tint all the way down to the point where it might as well have been called Film PINK & GREEN. Seriously, all of the gold was legitimately pink instead. I'll just wait for the Blu-Ray for a proper English viewing experience.

Funimation went all out with the dub. The sound track was also phenomenal. I had some friends who went with me that aren't too familiar with One Piece besides Strong World and Film Z and they really enjoyed it. It was great to experience One Piece on the big screen and with other people. The comedic bits went over really well with the audience. It was a really good time and I hope this film does good enough to bring future One Piece films to US theaters.

Box Office Mojo updated it's Thursday reports and One Piece Film: Gold came in at #41 just below Bad Santa 2 which grossed $1,867 but the movie's Thursday earnings weren't reported which I think means that FUNi didn't report them but seeing as how the movie was likely playing in a few less theaters than Bad Santa 2, we can gauge that it probably grossed under $1,867 and FUNi didn't feel like reporting it but considering how the movie has grossed $190,859 so far, the movie has done way better than FUNi and others have likely expected it to do and it's next biggest group of showings is today so we'll see how yesterday's box office and this weekend's box office go before heading into it's final two days on Monday and Tuesday which should likely have the film's final gross be a little over $200,000 at the lowest and anywhere from $250,000 to $300,000 at the highest

Don't panic though, the movie is still doing very well and will likely do better than it's Thursday showings this weekend and next week. So far, it's performed better in it's first two days than Attack on Titan Part 2 did in it's first two days but it didn't do as well on it's third day as AoT Part 2 did on it's third day and that's the FUNi film that it's peforming the most similar to. The movie is still FUNi's #6 highest grossing release and I will update it's full achievements after Tuesday

                                                                                    Gross To Date:

                                                                                    | $190,859 |

The movie will release on Blu-ray in April in Germany so the US release shouldn't be too far off, likely in either March or April

Not to mention the theater count for Thursday is defintely higher than 110.

A particular days earnings are sometimes not updated until several days later (whereas it would usually be the next day for most other movies). This is especially true on weekends, when most studios only put out “estimates” of boxoffice earnings; it often makes more sense to just wait until Monday to put out “actuals” when your movie isn’t drawing in big bucks like the more mainstream movies. So the fact that no information has been posted for Thursday yet doesn’t automatically mean it made very little.

I'm just putting it out there that releases like this aren't always treated as “high-priority”, so updates aren't always going to be at the same rate as the more mainstream movies. I would just suggest we wait and see over the next couple days before assuming too much

At least it's doing very well which is a great sign as it shows that One Piece is about #3 in terms of FUNi's biggest properties. The brand managers did call it a staple for them recently as well

That's a shame that Carina's voice actress couldn't sing all that well. I really wanted the English version of Gold and Jive to be good, but I'm guessing with her lack-luster singing it's not all that great.

I actually felt that she was fine when she was singing on her own. As someone else implied, the song only becomes a little shrill when they're both singing together towards the end of it.

Don't even get me started on the countless amounts of plot holes in this movie. Watching this film with an even slightly critical eye takes all the fun out of it. I was able to enjoy it way more the second time around.

Speaking of, I saw it on the 12th for a second time in a more typical movie theater. Whereas the premiere night had a full Alamo theater (100-150 seats), the showing on the 12th for me only had about twenty people in it.

I saw it in Brooklyn Monday evening. The theater was maybe 70% full. A lot of adult fans brought their young children to see it.

The movie was very enjoyable, and the dub was fantastic. Keith Silverstein was fantastic casting. So great to hear Christopher Smith and Jason Liebrecht again.

Also VERY odd to hear very current story events being referenced in the dub. Dressrosa being name-dropped (pronounced with a soft 's'), CP-0, hearing Sabo and Koala. Hard to judge Vic Mignogna's performance here, as I could hardly remember what adult Sabo sounded like in Japanese. But there was certainly nothing wrong with his performance.

I hope the movie does well enough in theaters to warrant future One Piece movies the same treatment.

I wonder if FUNi added it in to get current fans hyped and let them know they are aware of what events are coming.
