      @The:

Wait, so you mean to tell me Naruto's gonna turn into DBZ where most of the side characters end up as underutilized caricatures of themselves? Well, that fractured my heart a bit…

Once you get over the initial pain, you can enjoy the rest of the ride with a big bucket of popcorn, though. And sometimes you get ever so slight glimpses of what could've been.

Well, I've started my rewatch of Yu Yu Hakusho. Watched the first two episodes earlier this evening and, so far, it's as good as I remember; maybe even better.

Honestly, I was never that fond of the early slice-of-life (plus supernatural ghost story) episodes as a kid, but I think they actually set everything up pretty well and managed to get some really funny and emotional stuff in there (part of which is owed to the great performances of the Funi cast). Also, something I'm not sure I ever really appreciated was that this series does have a real heart to it. Right off the bat we get this story about a punk kid who figures everyone would be better off without him, but then realizes that his life has value (yeah, okay, it's a mini-It's a Wonderful Life story, but still).

Well, it's still a long road ahead and I'm looking forward to it.

Just finished watching Samurai Champloo with a few other AP people, and I really loved it! I was actually hooked on the show from the intro; "Battlecry" is just that good. I don't normally even like hip-hop music that much, but the soundtrack for the series was beyond excellent. Also appreciated how very well-done the choreography was, and the "anachronism" mashup theme was quite fun and refreshing. Any gripes with the series are overall pretty minor ones. I did find Fuu, the female lead, to be kind of annoying in the beginning of the series–it felt like she was overly bossy and whined/complained a lot, and she sometimes came across as ungrateful for her bodyguards--but at least, while that didn't totally disappear until the finale, it was lessened over time. Funny enough, in the beginning I complained a bit about Fuu getting kidnapped all the time (though, considering the time period, it does make sense), but looking back, I enjoyed seeing the guys go to save her when that happened, so in retrospect it doesn't bother me nearly so much. There were also some characters that I wish had shown up more, like the assassin guy (Inuyama?) from the second episode who was like "We will meet again" but they never did, and Manzo getting to do some actual secret police work instead of just being a narrator, though that may have been the point, lol.

I'll admit I did have some concerns going into the finale--since most of the series was pretty episodic and we still only had a limited knowledge of the background of two of our main characters, I was worried whether all that could be wrapped up well enough. Luckily, it definitely was; the questions I still had were tied up nicely, the finale felt genuinely high-stakes for all of the mains, and there was a lot of suspense there. Not to mention, we got to see the main trio forming a solid bond as the series continued, and the finale episodes did a great job of highlighting and emphasizing that character development they all had. And I very much liked the ending (which usually plays an important part in how much I like a series overall) and found it satisfying for the most part.

I liked all three mains a lot. Both samurai characters, Jin and Mugen, were incredibly badass and enjoyable. My personal favorite is probably Mugen, who has a "crazy-awesome" vibe to him that makes him super interesting to watch, and he also is definitely the most quotable, with the solid majority of the best lines in the series. Though that's not to take away from Jin, who gets quite a few hilarious "comically serious" moments throughout the series.

I won't go into much more detail in order to keep from spoiling the series for anybody who may watch in the future, but bottom line is, it was an excellent anime, would definitely recommend! Has 26 episodes, so not too long of a watch. We were watching in a group of six, with four of us who'd never seen it before, and all four newbies enjoyed it.😁 We did the English dubbed version, which is without a doubt one of the best dubs I've ever seen. Created by the same guy who did Cowboy Bebop, Watanabe, which apparently also has a great dub–heck, Steven Blum, the VA who voices Spike from that series, also voices Mugen. (Though if you do watch the subbed version, Mugen there is played by Kazuya Nakai--a.k.a. Zoro--and Fuu's VA is also Nodame from Nodame Cantabile, so there is that.)

This show had a really awesome game for the Sega Game Gear, so I started watching it:

It's like a better version of Inuyasha (made before Inuyasha), with a theme song by Hironobu Kageyama.

I'm finally jumping into the hole that is The Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Watched the first movie and the first three episodes, and I'm surprised at how quickly it gripped me. Being 110 eps, I thought it would be a slow start. Stuff like Hunter x Hunter doesn't even get good until you're at least a dozen episodes in, but I was in just from watching that first movie. The characters and animation are a little stiff, but the writing and themes are tight. Focusing separately on each side highlights both the complexity and pointlessness of war. I particularly liked that, in the movie (which is essentially the pilot), you don't even really hear what the sides are until the very end, like an afterthought. The soundtrack is another highlight. The classical music simultaneously evokes feelings of the classical wars such pieces were often made to embody and acts as a calm backdrop to the large-scale violence, putting you in the headspace of the commanders who must distance themselves from the horrors of war to guide the battles.

I have no clue what's in store for me throughout the journey. The movie and the first couple episodes were centered on galactic battles, but episode 3 started introducing the politics of the warring sides, so I'm looking forward to seeing what else the series has to show me.

Have fun with the series. For me it´s one of the best things in fiction period, so you have many things to look forward to.

Always nice to see people trying it out, 110 episodes is a big hurdle after all.

LotGH is a phenomenal series, some of the greatest epic story-telling ever written. The level of ambition and depth is of the likes that will probably be never seen again in anime.

Glad I stumbled upon this thread and saw people talking about Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Been wanting to watch it since two years ago but because of several postponement, I eventually forgot about it. Thanks to this thread I have been reminded again and now I will definitely be allocating time in my schedule to finally watch the series.

Is LotGH really that good or are people tend to give their favorite show a plus point?
Especially in the elitist community this series is put on number on spot and anything under it is nothing (cough Anime snob cough), but after seeing the Animation, voice acting and hearing some osts on YouTube I question myself if the production quality high is?
Yeah I know its older but their are other old series that didn't seem that bad in production and I also know that its about writing, but compared to something like HSH that has often horrible scribbles as actual panels I can not overlook average quality only with writing, I talk about editing, colouring, pacing etc.

The character are not the problem only the things above, so please give a proper reply.

Well being honest I have no problem watching movies from 70s( like Clockwork Orange) by Anime 80s and 90s are OK for me depending how good its adapted like Cowboy Bebop.
By manga I also wouldn't read 70s many a like lone wolf and cub thanks to the absolutley outdated artwork.

Watching it will take time, I really need first to finish up Haikyu what I watched few days ago and was amazed and also read some manga TV shows.

it's funny, it has a harry potter vibe to it too, and as always trigger has never failed to impress me with their fluid cartoony animation.

Watched an episode of the Japanese Cardcaptor Sakura on a whim (having watched that god awful American dub when I was a kid) and I'm bloody hooked. This show is just fucking fantastic.

Heh, I watched Cardcaptor Sakura all the time as TV as a kid. I remember it aired before school. And yeah, it was the dub.

LotGH is a phenomenal series, some of the greatest epic story-telling ever written. The level of ambition and depth is of the likes that will probably be never seen again in anime.

So is the level of ambition, and depth comparable to something like Nausicaa (manga) in terms of thematics, and relevance?

Or is it just a fluff piece that is grand in scale?

I'm only asking because 100 episodes seems like a really big commitment, and I would like to know if it's really worth it before I really jump into it.

I find it far deeper and richer with more relatable human characters. This is not a knock against Nausicaa, it's just how I genuinely feel that this anime is that good. The most prevalent quote in the series is how in all ages, in all times, the deeds of men remain the same. A message that resonates throughout the series and even to the current global political climate.

Just finished watching a late 80's anime called Sakigake!! Otokojuku. In terms of art and character design, it takes a lot of cues from Fist of the North Star (and JoJo Parts 1, 2, 3 if I'm not mistaken) and is one of the reasons why I was interested in checking it out in the first place. The other reason is because of J-Stars for the PS4.

Other than Tsurugi Momotaro (basically Kenshiro Jr.) kinda being boring, all the other supporting characters are pretty interesting. The humor is gut-busting, especially in the beginning of the anime. I'd say it even rivals One Piece in terms of comedy. For action, it's great for a 80's shounen anime, the animation was smooth and consistent (at least in my eyes).

Since I want more of this series, I'm gonna go read the manga.

The face of a Straw Hat.

If it's any indication, I was pretty gripped from the moment I started watching. I wasn't really expecting a whole lot to begin with, at the very least I was ready to spend like 10-20 episodes waiting for the narrative to set some things up before I really got hooked, but I was into it from the first half hour of viewing.

The animation is often stiff and definitely a product of its time, but there's some artistic value in being hand-drawn, and indicating action between writing and limited animation. The soundtrack is also really good, and contributes greatly to the artistic presentation of the show.

Like TLC said, it really surpasses Nausicaa in that regard. Like i previously mentioned, i find it to be one of the best and ambitious piece of fiction period.

I watched Galactic Heroes a while back, got pretty far into the series, but ended up stopping. Not for dislike of the series, but rather I got caught up with other stuff. Sadly now I can't remember where I left off in the series.

Spoiler for trying to figure out where I left off, read at your own risk.

! I know for sure I am through the 1st season, as Kircheis has died. I think I am anywhere between episode 39-48, reading the episode synopsis they ring a bell, but I am not 100% certain and might need a refresher. That is a lot of episodes to go through again, but in the grand scheme it's not even halfway through the series.

                                                                          Let the beat build bitch

I've made two discoveries today while looking at Crunchyroll for something to watch while I put away laundry: The Irresponsible Galaxy Tylor, and a new version of Magical Circle Guru-Guru.

The former caught my interest immediately since The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is one of my favorite series. Galaxy is a series of 3-4 minute shorts featuring a descendant of the original Tylor, Banjo Ueki Tylor, his robot buddy Yamamoto 372, and Azalyn, Goza the 168th, of the now long-defuct Raalgon Empire. They have various random misadventures. It's kinda meh but I'll probably keep it up, anyway.

Magical Circle Guru-Guru, also known as Mahoujin Guru-Guru, features Nike, a young boy whose parents force him to become an RPG hero when the demon king re-awakens. Joining him on this quest is Kukuri, the last known practitioner of Guru Guru summoning magic, which would be great if she weren't mostly incompetent at it. Another reoccurring character is the Old Kita-Kita Man, the mayor of a village who has seen few to any female births since he exploited a holy dance the girls did for cash. Now the old man he tries to reinvigorate the dance the only way he can, by donning the grass skirt and headdress and spreading the Kita Kita Dance everywhere he goes. Whether people like it or not.

Waldorf: You know Statler, after watching the last one thousand episodes of One Piece, I think I've come to a conclusion.

                                                                              Statler: No you haven't.

                                                                              Both: DOHOHOHOHOHO!

There are still some nagging things making me think it could turn into some sort of sequel to EoE but most of the stuff I initially was thinking about are more or less explained. I'm enjoying the new continuity but I have no idea where it's going to go. Glad I watched it now instead of when it came out so that's a few years less that I'll be waiting for 4.0.

There are so many things I want to say that I really don't know where to begin. I could write pages on this, but I'll try to stay reserved.

I've never experienced a series with this level of scope, focus, and ambition, something truly fitting its characters. Legend of the Galactic Heroes truly built a vibrant history through the course of the series; one which unfolds throughout it. It's filled with plenty of vibrant characters, complex and entangled events, and a lot of interesting commentary on the nature of war, conflict, politics, and human society. The latter's left such a mark on me that I've brought it up in philosophical discussions with friends on the nature of government and the use of violence in rebellion.

The philosophy wasn't the only of those things to leave a huge mark. I grew so attached to each of the characters, that just about any of the deaths short of people who deserved it made me cry. I think that this is the most emotional I've ever been at a piece of media, surpassing things like Fullmetal Alchemist and Mother 3, both of which only peaked in terms of emotional impact for me when I've revisited them. If I'm ever able to watch through all of LotGH again, it'll likely surpass that impact even further.

                                                                                  On the story, itself:

! It's amazing how coherent and interesting everything stays throughout the whole series. Because the narration frames the series as a history, it's easy to follow the events that allowed Reinhard to succeed, caused the dissolution of the alliance, allowed democracy to preserve itself and the eventual reconciliation with the empire.
! If there's one misgiving I have, it's that both Rubinsky and the Terraists have anticlimactic endings, for all their posturing. I'm glad that they were both silenced by the end, and that it's clearly not the end of terrorism and rebellion through the course of history, but their ends make it seem like their machinations after the capture of Phezzan and the raiding of the Earth cult weren't building to any kind of goal. The entanglement between the two is another thing left unexplored. I was hoping to see them undermine each other, and their conflict to lead to their undoing, but instead it's all sound and fury. Still, though, it was satisfying to see Oberstein taking care of both eventually. His sacrifice was really interesting and I want to believe that it was something he planned (even if he didn't expect to die). I like his characterization as emotionally reserved and lacking self-esteen, but unendingly loyal to Reinhard. Using Reinhard on his deathbed as a way to root out the remaining Terraists seemed to me almost like a final gift of his, letting his kaiser be integral to one final victory and securing peace in the empire.
! As for my favorite moments, it's really hard to pick them out from so many. The end of season 3 with Yang Wenli's death and the battle for Iserlohn was incredible. That three episode battle in the corridor was tense and spectacular, and the fallout was emotional. I was in tears throughout the entirety of the episode mourning Yang, and still felt a little choked up whenever they brought him up again. Other standouts include the Battle of Amlitzer (it was a really cathartic strategic victory for Reinhard and the use of Dvorak's New World symphony was spectacular), the Eighth Battle of Iserlohn (even if it didn't result in much, the fact that they basically pit a death star against another death star was a huge OH SHIT moment for me), and, of course, just about every character death there was. In particular, Kircheis, Bucock, Yang Wenli, Reuenthal, Oberstein, and Reinhard left an impact on me. Reuenthal commanding his troops to retreat and taking care of business on Heinessen while suffering from a fatal wound stands out as an incredibly badass end to the character.
! As for the ending, I really loved the idea of Reinhard wanting Felix and Alex to share the same kind of relationship as him and Kircheis. The empire considering the adoption of constitutionalism was a nice way to let Yang's legacy live on without betraying Reinhard's wish to unite the universe with a just rule. I'm intrigued by everything that might happen next, but I also know that the story needed to end eventually, and Reinhard's death is a fitting place. The series could be said to be the history of Reinhard and the rise of the Lohengramm dynasty, and it makes it clear that this is neither the beginning nor end of circumstances in their universe. I was a little afraid about whether the series could stick an ending to such a complicated story, but I was left perfectly satisfied (ie an emotional wreck at Reinhard's death). This series is easily a 10/10 from me and about as close to perfect as I think I could ask for.

Rubinsky and the cult were the biggest anticlimactic letdown especially after all the posturing of the latter that they were going to make their faith, the central tenet of the galaxy. Otherwise, totally agree, the show felt less like a television series and more like a well done documentary.

Nicely summarized. Now we only have to hope that one day Tanaka Yoshiki´s other works might get such an adaptation, especially Arslan which has a similar scope to LotGH but, for me personally, has a far more interesting setting.

Also looked up some footage from the dub on Youtube and it's unbelievably awful. I didn't hear everyone but Sakura sounds like some burnout 20 year old. The fact that the acting is awful makes it even worse.

-Introductions of huge slews of named characters that would be pretty much impossible to give proper attention and development to.
-Bringing back old characters without any real plan for them and writing them out anticlimactically

Also, since this was my first time watching the Three Kings saga, I guess I'll comment on that. Obviously not a huge arc like the Dark Tournament or Chapter Black, but still an effective one that, at its core, I guess, is about growing up and how all the characters handle it. Plot-wise, there are a few things that irk me, like how they never really resolved the issue of demons needing to eat humans (did they need to eat humans?) and Yusuke's attitude towards it, and, as mentioned, there are some plot threads that don't really go anywhere or get expanded on. And, of course, it would've been great to see how the story would've played out how Togashi originally intended, but I guess some things just aren't meant to be.

But this really was a great journey, revisiting an old classic and finally getting the chance to watch all the episodes I missed. And that last episode was just a perfect, delightful, and heartfelt send off for the show. I guess at some point I'll go back read the manga and see what was different and how the Three Kings saga played out there.

[And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes

Maybe it was me watching too much Rurouni Kenshin, which did end with a bunch of filler rather than what happened in the manga and thinking Yu Yu was the same. Pretty sure I finished Chapter Black but never watched passed that and didn't get that far in the manga.

im rewatching yu yu hakusho and its very good. its a shame its not a popular series. if this had been broadcast as widely as dbz in the west it would've definitely beat it in terms of quality.
the fights are quick, they don't drag for the sake of extending the episode's length, they also generally don't last more than 2 or 3 episodes, and the animation is very serviceable and quite good at times.
each character in the team gets a chance to show their strengths, they get the time to explain their motivation and their backstory, and they're given distinctive personalities that you can connect with and understand. dragon ball failed miserably at developing most of the side characters.
im still in the dark tournament arc, so i don't know how much of will change in the future episodes.
